No, they aren't. They don't even seem to be a 'serious' band lately, musicwise. But Herr Morbid is either a very talented guy or a very lucky one, since he wrote and recorded all by himself one of the best records ever in Songs to Leave. Never came close to doing anything remotely as good after that, though... I mean, sure Springtime Depression is a kinda ok record, but we are talking about a complete masterpiece in every sense of the word in Songs to Leave. One album wonder band? Maybe. A helluva album, though, so that's fine with me.

Hellyeah they own! FT is one of my most favourite bands atm. Springtime Depression and Songs to Leave. Astonishing atmosphere and vocals.

I wasn't meaning to specifically compare Herr Morbid's clean vocals to Kvaforth's particular style. As silly as I find Shining to be (though I'll still enjoy III or IV here and there), especially now, Kvarforth's vocals are probably the most entertaining thing about that band. Here, "clean vocals" just feel out of place.

i don't have shining releases anymore and i don't listen to it for a good time, but as far as i remember, kvarforth did clean vocals with a frequent basis just in V and VI (fix me if i'm wrong). negative megalomania was released before shining's V. forgotten tomb had it's solos too, or at least a more complex guitar work, but i must agree that the cockrock solos had begun in NM (and that LBG is far more superior than NM), although they aren't there just to fill a hole like in shining.

On the other hand, I'll admit that Negative Megalomania is an unfortunate misstep -- or not even really a misstep, but a sadly deliberate step toward the wank of Shining, awful clean vocals and cockrock guitar solos and all. Everything else they've done is great, but that album comes as a slap in the face after a record as excellent as Love's Burial Ground. They seem to have succumbed to the demands of the distastefully glamorous side of the "depressive" black metal scene. A shame.

I don't hear Shining at all. The vocals remind me of Ihsahn on In the Nightside Eclipse, but it's wretched, doom-laden black metal.
