    Ago 30 2008, 17h53 por Piro24

Well, there's not much to say this week :), everything has been going the way it normally does, except for new members, which we seem to not be getting as many of. I guess I'll add a few new connections :) So, let's get on to the top 3.
    ----------------------------------------------
1: ColdWorld is a melodic black metal band. Even though they are melodic black metal, the music is very depressing, down beaten and original. There are also many ambient and classical influences that are very prominent in the music, creating an excellent atmosphere, full of energy and sadness.
2: Forest Silence is an ambient black metal band from Hungary. Though it certainly IS ambient black metal, it is also quite aggressive at times, which should please fans of both ambient and fans of aggressive black metal. Certainly something to check out.
3: Finally we have Primitive Graven Image another black metal band. (I think it was all black metal that was posted this week) This band, however, is different from the other two, mostly because of how old school it is, sounding extremely similar to bands like Darkthrone, though I would say the production is actually a bit better than some of Darkthrone's stuff.
  • Top ten black metal vocal performances or a journal entry called 'Escape Into The…

    Jun 9 2008, 13h35 por concretedonkey

This post offers what I consider the ten best vocal performances in black metal.

Whether it's just screaming their lungs off or supporting the melody, these guys know their stuff. Of course this is my humble opinion only and some may argue that I don't know jack shit about BM, because I haven't listened enough Venom or wasn't 'kvlt' enough to restart my charts after getting into metal. I haven’t taken the actual lyrics into account; rather how they sound within a song (it’s somewhat hard to understand BM lyrics anyway) and whether they are capable of destroying your anus or not.

Artist connections (on the right side) are bands that were under consideration for this chart (I’ve had this idea for over 6 months, so they should be pretty well-picked by now). You can download the full version here (mp3 192br) or here (FLAC, 74Mb) or alternatively, click on the link followed by each song to get the samples (mp3 128br). Total length of this project is 10min30sec.

The list from best to… best: (after the grim kvlt image)

    10. Dub Buk - Ljut Naszoj Witczyzny sample

The vocalist repeats whatever he just sang with an unearthly growl which fits the song damn well, but overall they tend to get a bit boring with their 12-minute songs.

Can it destroy your anus: Yes

    09. Naglfar – Odium Generis Humani sample

Naglfar, a very mallcore-ish BM band stands out with this song and the chorus within.

Can it destroy your anus: No

    08. Ulver – Capitel III: Graablick Blev Hun Vaer sample

Garm’s vocals during Ulver’s black metal era weren’t that impressive, but I have to give this song some credit- the gunshot scares me every time I don’t pay attention.

Can it destroy your anus: Yes, the gunshot will.

    07. Akercocke – Skin for Dancing In sample

Not really a ‘tr00’ black metal band, but they’ve done some incredible work with the use of their vocals and unusual instruments. The alternative title of this journal is inspired by this song and those words have become an inside joke among me and my friend.

Can it destroy your anus: Yes

    06. Lunar Aurora – Glück sample

The absolute atmosphere masters of Black Metal use two different background vocals here, some sort of monks chanting and element of female chorus as well, not to mention the main vocalist’s shrieks.

Can it destroy your anus: Hell yes.

    05. Myrkgrav – Om Å Danse Bekhette sample

I don’t classify Myrkgrav as a pure Black Metal band, but here it is anyway (because it is damn good not to list here). Lars Jensen has created an excellent chorus using only his voice and he handles the shrieky vocals as well, providing us with one of the best one-man bands out there.

Can it destroy your anus: No

    04. Silencer – Sterile Nails and Thunderbowels sample

Nattramn provides us with an unearthly rap segment (is it just me or do I hear him mentioning someone named Jennifer at some point?), followed by insane coughs and by even more insane shrieks. Somehow I find his performance genuine, whether his ‘escaped from mental institute’ image is correct or not.

Can it destroy your anus: It will make you want to destroy it.

(top three is sponsored by Kvlt Fucking Chicken)

    03. Rotting Christ – Enuma Elish sample

The chorus uses some middle-eastern or asian style singing and it totally demolished my anus. I imagined a couple of blood-covered hindu girls opening their mouth and bloody vomit would escape from their internal organs while they hover inches above ground and captivate your soul with their singing.

Can it destroy your anus: It can become your new anus.

    02. Loits – Soomepoiss sample

Not scary, but just good. One of the best intros I’ve ever heard.

Can it destroy your anus: No

    01. Nocte Obducta – Im Bizarren Theatre sample

Numero uno is a little-known German BM band with some pretty mainstream, nearly Rammstein-ish melodies on their latter albums, but this one scream from the 1999’s otherwise boring album caught my ears. Pure emotion.

Can it destroy your anus: No.

    Thanks for listening.
I noticed majority of these bands lack the anti-christian beliefs so common to Black Metal today, so it can be concluded that true emotion comes from talent within and what you really believe in (making good music). People who know me might ask why I haven’t included Agalloch or Drudkh, two of my favourite bands at the moment. I can say they were just nearly outside top10 along with Sigh, Bergraven and Kekal.

Agalloch Drudkh Kroda Bergraven Forest Silence Kekal
    Venom Dimmu Burger King Diamond
    Woods of Ypres Uhrilehto Mirrorthrone
    Cruachan
  • New Shit: TWO THOUSAND EIGHT!!!!!!

    Mai 27 2008, 0h11 por tcallahan

IT'S BEEN MAD LONG! I'VE BEEN WORKING A SHIT TON AND HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO GET A LOT OF NEW MUSIC, BECAUSE I'M NOT A BOURGEOIS FUCK WITH A TON OF FREE TIME! THAT MEANS I HAVEN'T HAD A LOT OF TIME TO GO ON THE INTERNET EITHER!

WHEN I'M A GRAD STUDENT IN THE FALL IF I'M NOT EDITING SOME FUCKER'S BOOK AS A PART TIME JOB THEN MAYBE I'LL DO THIS SHIT MORE OFTEN! OTHERWISE HERE ARE THE NEW RECORDS I'VE GOTTEN SO FAR THIS YEAR AND WHAT I THINK!!!!

    Agoraphobic Nosebleed- A CLOCKWORK SODOM!
This is all right, I mean I like it, it's just not really a grind record! I think inevitably ANbX were going to go into Man Is the Bastard territory anyway, SO HERE IT IS! IT'S A NOISECORE RECORD!

Atari Teenage Riot - DELETE YOURSELF!
I've been meaning to get into this band for about ten years now. I REALLY LIKE THIS. I haven't gotten a record I was PSYCHED about for a while. This has a ton of energy, but isn't for everyone. It's like that Venetian Snares and Speedranch record, with hardcore vocals, sampling Slayer!

    Boris - SMILE!
This album blows. Everyone already knew that. MOVING ON

The Dillinger Escape Plan -IRE WORKS!!!
I listened to this record pretty much non stop from the month before it came out for like two months. I really like it. I know this band doesn't have much cred anymore, and I think they might have just recorded this to fulfill a contractual agreement with RELAPSE, but THIS IS SICK! Energetic, technical, mad short songs to start, then more melodic shit at the end. I like the way it's put together. GREG PUCIATO is also one of my personal heroes.

Dizzee Rascal - Maths + English
I guess I thought I was going to like this genre of music, and maybe I still do, but it just seems like a hipstered-up version of southern rap where they yell the same shit over and over. I found this to be pretty boring.

Forest Silence - The ETERNAL WINTER
Let's face it - there's a ton of really shitty black metal! This isn't that bad. I actually kind of like it because I tend to move towards the more ambient shit in the genre, not the blast-beat ridden stuff. This has like just the right amount of both, and I was starting to get into more hardcore influenced black metal (Tangorodrim, Glorior Belli) so this is cool. I felt like I wasn't actually finding anything I liked that was "real" black metal, so here it is I guess. I don't know where I heard about it.

First Floor Power - NEW RECORD
DIDN'T EVEN GET IT, BECAUSE Jenny Wilson IS NO LONGER IN THE BAND. The only songs worth listening to on their other albums were written by Jenny - and those songs are AWESOME. Any that Per whatever the fuck his name is wrote, were all the same meter and time signature and verse structure NO MATTER WHAT ALBUM. I couldn't handle a whole record of that. Not to mention HIS VOICE SUCKS.

    Kingdom of Sorrow
Tough guys will love this - basically anyone who already likes Hatebreed. I like the first track, the rest is kind of stupid... I don't like shit that is at the same time heavy only for the same of being heavy, while walking the line of keeping it not that heavy, so kids who think they like metal but are huge pussies (people who listen to Hatebreed) will still like it.

    Miles Davis - BITCHES BREW
I was on a quest to find something I had never heard the likes of before, SO HERE IT IS! I like this, but not for any reason really. There is no song structure. It's good background music I guess. I really got it because I like the cover artist.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let LOVE In
I like this, I don't know what to say really, it's dark and different from anything else I listen to. Everyone's heard this at some point so I don't really need to comment.

Os Mutantes - ANDO MEIO DESLIGADO
THIS IS FUCKING SWEET! I was planning a trip to Brazil earlier this year and figured I may as well check some culture out, and I guess this is like their most successful artist from the 'psychedelic' era? It's totally psychedelic I guess. I love shit that's recorded analog and has a ton of empty space in it. Add female vocalist and it's a winning combination. I got some of their other records but this was the only one I think that was kind of dark enough for me to enjoy.

    Portishead - Third
Listened once and didn't like it, I was probably expecting too much. I'll revisit again when I'm in the mood to listen to them, which is rare.

    Q-Unique - Vengeance is Mine
I always wondered who the dude with the SICK voice was in all those obscure Company Flow tracks, and with some research I found that it was this dude and sometimes Godfather Don. Q-UNIQUE IS AN ANIMAL! I almost got back into underground hip hop based off this record, then realized that the majority of it sucks. But this is a great album. If someone sick (El-P?) produced his next record, it would be huge.

    Santana - ABRAXAS
This album KILLS! Before SANTANA connotated gay songs with guest vocalists from pop acts, it was a sick jam band with some hard shit! I got the album III also, which is just as awesome.

Sly & The Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
ANother attempt to try something way outside my usual spectrum. I like it, I guess I just don't know what genre of music this is. I can feel how pissed off black people were in NYC and LA in the 1960's in this. It's kind of awesome especially because it's not hard so like it's a different way of getting aggression out.

Soilent Green- INEVITABLE COLLAPSE IN THE PRESENCE OF CONVICTION
I didn't like this at first - CONFRONTATION was basically a beatdown and I was expecting another one. BUT after a few listens I do enjoy it, every SG record is different. While this one is more sludgy than the last, it's also more technical and just as hard/heavy.

    Pentemple - O))) PRESENTS
I'm gonna have to listen to this a few more times, any Sunn O))) record is like that though. I'm starting to like it I think.

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - DANZA II: THE ELCTRIC BOOGALOO
Their first album was poorly produced metalcore... I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THIS IS BUT IT'S SICK. Like... I never expected anything this technical out of this band. Their first album was a joke. I can't explain this. I've never heard anything like it. Check it out please if you want something retardedly technical but catchy at the same time.

    Torche - MEANDERTHAL
LET'S FACE IT: IN RETURN WAS BORING! This album is awesome. It has all the sludginess and pop of Floor, but, dare I say, IT'S BETTER! I'm miffed that the NYC show sold out before I knew they had anything interesting to offer. I'll have to get them next time around.

I THINK THAT'S EVERYTHING... TIL NEXT TIME

    Set 24 2007, 22h20 por UnaGoblin

Well, today im just ranting and raving about the few tracks I currently have on my playlis, first up is Dark Muse, lovely dark ambient with extremly moody atmosphere, exellent for those moments when you just feel like a raging animal that needs its chains replaced.. Secondly its Forest Silence, same good old album Winter Circle is still my most played cd, no wonder since its among the most beautiful you get to listen to in this world.. Thirdly ive gotten real tag up about Type O Negative and the new cd, at first I dint find it that special but it grows on you, and now ive been pumping it alot while studying and ranting.. If youve missed it you should check out the video that Dark Muse uploaded on her last.fm, endless and moody is the least I can say, almost as good as the mindbreaking Clean Cathedral by In Slaughter Natives!

  • 2006: The Best 25, The Worst 10, and a Little More.

    ALBUMS:

    1. Tool - 10,000 Days [Progresive Rock]
I’m a Tool fanboy, and this album did not disappoint. Not much new to be honest, but still fantastic.

    2. Mirrorthrone - Carriers of Dust [Black Metal]
Wow, this came out of nowhere. The work of one 20 year old guy, this band is amazingly intricate, epic, and thrilling.

    3. !T.O.O.H.! - Rad a Trest [Death/Grind]
The last album by the Czech Republic’s (and possibly the world’s) strangest death metal band closes their career on a happy note.

    4. The Mars Volta - Amputechture [Progressive Rock]
After Frances the Mute, opinions on TMV were split, but in my eyes they have fully redeemed themselves with a 3rd fantastic album. Not to say Frances wasn’t great too.

    5. Forest Silence - Philosophy of Winter [Black Metal]
Winter eschews the ambience that filled the earlier 3 Forest Silence demos for full on black metal, and it is beautiful.

    6. Gory Blister - Skymorphosis [Death Metal]
2006 was a great year for death metal (just look below!) and Gory Blister released the best.

    7. Benighted - Identisick [Death Metal]
And Benighted followed very closely. French. Brutal. Death Metal. Hell yes.

    8. Drawn and Quartered - Hail Infernal Darkness [Death Metal]
D&Q finishes the ‘death metal trilogy’ of 2006 if you will with a very solid release with great riffs and vocals and (especially) solos.

    9. Canvas Solaris - Penumbra Diffuse [Progressive Metal]
This band did a 180. Their first release was just…meh, but this is a wonderfully happy instrumental prog journey.

    10. Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
Yes, Mr. Fenriz, the cult IS alive and you have shown us along with Nocturno.

    11. Toby Driver - In The L..L..Library Loft [Avant-Garde/Drone/Godknowswhat]
Toby Driver may be a pretentious ass, but…when he makes pretentious music, it turns out wonderfully (most of the time). This album is challenging in more ways than one.

    12. Wolves in the Throne RoomDiadem of 12 Stars [Black Metal]
Truth: US black metal is a fairly boring style. But WitTR take it and make something great. Go figure.

    13. Cardinale31:13 [Sludge Metal]
Or is it post-metal? No, if you think that go shoot yourself now. Tried and tested SLUDGE formula music, and it’s all good.

    14. The Lawrence ArmsOh! Calcutta! [Pop-Punk]
Catchy, uplifting songs and vocal harmonies make this the most fun album of the year.

    15. ProfaneThe Day We Scorched The Sky [Sludge Metal]
I’m running out of things to say. This album rules, period.

    16. Six Degrees Of AdmittanceThe Sun Awakens [Folk or something]
Sprawling and massive. Ben Chasney is crazy, but in a good way.

    17. OMConference of the Birds [Stoner Metal]
Taking influence perhaps from bands like Hawkwind, Om’s sophomore effort innovates the stoner genre while staying true to it.

    18. Kayo DotDowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue [Avant-Garde]
At first, I didn’t know what to think of this album. Then I hated it. Then I loved it. Then I hated it again. Then I was impartial. Now, I think I’ve finally finalized my opinion on it, and it is good.

    19. Gregor Samsa55:12 [Post-Rock]
Not much to say here. It’s not very different from their earlier stuff, but that’s not a bad thing. Even better live. What’s with the trend of naming your album after the length anyway?

    20. AmorphisEclipse [Rock]
Fantastic vocals carry this album out of mediocrity and into awesomeness.

Honorable Mentio: Nuit Noire - Infantile Espieglery [Faerical Blasting Punk]
This album came out too late for me to properly rank it, but Tenebras certainly delivers again.

    EPS & DEMOS:

    1. AmesoeursRuines Humaines [Black Metal/Post-Rock?]
Holy crap holy crap holy crap. This release is AMAZING. Were it a full length album, it would easily be in the top 3. Moving between pure black metal and soft rock moments, this masterpiece is, well, moving.

    2. BalisetBlack Light Moon [Progressive Rock/Metal]
Greg Massi busts out the guitars and vocals for this laid back, relaxing demo that shows tons of potential. I’m excited.

    3. JesuSilver [Post-Rock/Sludgeish Metal]
Jesu takes a more upbeat tone here, and it works beautifully.

    4. Nuit NoireFuribond Elegance [Faerical Blasting Punk]
May the faeries be with you.

    5. Brain DrillThe Parasites [Death Metal]
    Woahmg riffs and woahmg drums.

    WORST:

    1. Lamb of GodSacrament [Metalcore]
Awful. Boring riffs, lame drumming, terrible vocals, laughable lyrics. An insult to metal.

    2. TriviumThe Crusade [Metallicore]
Hey guys we stopped playing generic metalcore and instead copied Metallica are we cool yet?

    3. Cradle of FilthThornography [Gothic rock]
    Lol.

    4. GodsmackIV [Generic Hard Rock]
    No.

    5. XeperDiscourses on Anything so Absolute [Sludge]
    Boring.

    6. SikThDeath of a Dead Day [Metalcore]
    Yuck.

    7. My Chemical RomanceThe Black Parade [Pop Rock]
I tried to like this album, but it sucked too much for that.

    8. Angels & AirwavesWe Don’t Need to Whisper [Pop Rock]
    See: MCR

    9. Stone SourCome (Whatever May) [Rock]
Featuring one of the worst singles of all time (“Through the Glass”).

    10. AFIDecemberunderground [Pop Rock]
This band used to be catchy. Now they are just annoying.

    BEST SONG OF THE YEAR:

TV on the Radio – “Playhouses”

    Tied with

Mirrorthrone – “A Scream To Express the Hate of a Race”

    The worst?

Stone Sour – “Through the Glass”

    Tied with

    Lamb of God – “Redneck”

    And to conclude…

2006 was a very great year for music. I found tons of new artists I greatly enjoy, some of which have extensive back catalogues I haven’t even looked at. Opposite of that, I found a few that should be avoided at all costs and some that should not be give a third chance. 2007 is almost here, and already some albums of that year have leaked...How fast time goes in the music world.

Well after listening to the new cd by Forest Silence I gotta admit im kinda dissapointed.. Out of five songs on his new album only two was outstanding. But then again, what can I complain about, artists change, I myself have changed alot since my old days of making music four years ago. Now im doing EBM and electronica instead of endlessly trying to grind my fingers to the bone with guitars.. The new cd "Philosophy of Winter" feels overdone, sure now he got a recordlable, hurray for that, sure now he will be ale to spread to those who havent been lucky enough to find his old recordings, but still it leaves a damp aftershock.. Its not Forest Silence anymore, its more of his old Sear Bliss minus a few newer members, and not that its anything wrong with that, hell I love Sear Bliss.. One day he might get back to his roots and do a more synthesiser based cd, but in the meantime, hope he keep up the good work, a good cd, but I'll stick to Oath Bound by Summoning, best release so far this damned year...
