Mar 20 2009, 0h42 por miketaoI caught up with the homies Tanya Morgan at Ironworks BBQ and after a full stomach of some delicious brisket, ribs, links and banana pudding, they put the smash down on an exclusive interview for us. Their sophomore album, Brooklynatti, is set for a May release date.
Production duo Keelay & Zaire got some camera time too as their album, Ridin' High recently dropped on March 10th. Be on the lookout for interviews from both of these artists soon!
The next stop of the day was the the 3rd Annual Urban Meet n Greet. Anybody and everybody involved with hip-hop on some way were at this venue at one point or another. Like the old days of the Gavin Convention, emcees Mykah Nine from Freestyle Fellowship/Project Blowed, Balance, and Zumbi fromZion I, with DJ Rhettmatic from the World Famous Beat Junkies on the beatbox.
Mar 19 2009, 9h28 por miketaoThis year's SXSW experience got off to a great start with a packed, and I do mean packed, house of sweaty hip-hop heads supporting some of today's brightest acts in the hip-hop realm.
The line to get in was beyond ridiculous, which resulted to listening to Blu & Exile outside, which actually wasn't a bad thing since the door is right next to the stage. I was just upset I couldn't get inside in time to snap a few pics. I did however get to talk to both of them individually briefly before their set and plan on checking them out again later this week at the Okayplayer/Frank 151 showcase on Saturday.
While it was initially frustrating trying to find my way in, I managed to run into some folks who were experiencing the same problem. Bay Area homies Foreign Legion, Bambu, DJ Phatrick…
Mar 12 2009, 22h55 por miketaoThere's going to be some difficult decisions to make this year, with the plethora of hip-hop showcases happenin' every night. This is, by far, the biggest hip-hop presence I've seen at SXSW in the past three years.
One show I've already penciled is the Thursday night Back Alley Social showcase featuring my homies Foreign Legion, Tanya Morgan and another group everyone's been talkin' about, Pac Div. If you've never seen FL live before, or aren't even familiar with them, these solo interviews won't help much, but at least you'll get a sense of their type of humor:
Tanya Morgan will be heavily active in Austin, promoting their upcoming album, Brooklynati on Interdependent Media. I'm expecting nothing less than a classic album from these guys.
Dez 14 2006, 22h25 por plank201BEST ARTIST I SAW THIS YEAR: Broken Social Scene
An extra-long set. The band that gives and gives some more. After playing what was meant to be the closer, It's All Gonna Break, the crowd demanded more. They were blissfully obliging.
5) Iron Maiden
BEST SUPPORT ACT: The Young Knives
Supported The Rakes and won me over with their light-hearted approach. Have seen them again since and am plnning to see them AGAIN in 2007.
2) Foxface (supporting Roddy Woomble)
3) Los Campesinos! (supporting Broken Social Scene)
4) The Dykeenies (supporting The Fratellis)
5) The Maccabees (supporting The Fratellis)
BEST SONG I HEARD LIVE THIS YEAR: Sao Paulo
An 11-minute epic, one part moody piano, one part chant-along anthem, one part bin-lid-bashing, samba-esque grande finale. All parts classic.
2) Mogwai Fear Satan
3) It's All Gonna Break
4) Here I Go Again
5) Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
BEST CROWD REACTION: Chelsea Dagger
