  • Official ANUS.com communique to all scenesters, hipsters and fakes

    Ago 4 2009, 20h40 por asgardsrei666

You came into this genre, which had an idea of its own.

Because you are weak, and you can't tell the difference between appearance and reality, you started using it for your own ends. To make yourself seem cool, either blockheaded kvlt or obliviously "open-minded."

You thought things like Dethklok and brainless faux prog bands were really cool, in that ironic kind of hip way you like.

Everything you have done has not been about the music. It has not been about art or culture. It has been about you and your failing egos.

You want to make it a joke so you feel better about being the hopelessly normal and boring people you are. You want to hide how ordinary you are. We are not fooled.

We are taking this genre back. You, scenesters and hipsters and other people who do not understand the message behind this music and the spirit of its culture, are blight on a good thing. We are not interested in you or your failings.

Here is our official communication to you:

  • A thousand days with last.fm - the flashback

    Mar 3 2009, 16h31 por orangebleu

Well, it looks I spent last thousand days attached and addicted to our beloved community. The truth is, it's one out of three community accounts I keep over the internet and my favourite as well. It has a perfect purpose for me - I deleted both myspace and facebook profiles I had; they seemed pointless beyond imagination. So now I revel in the awesomeness that last.fm offers me :D
Although there are many users determined to find new music here, apparently I'm not one of them. I took a look into my charts and realized there are only 8 of them I did not know before and were not reccomended by anyone, just found on my own in here. The lucky numbers are:

Biosphere (with whom I shared with my friend, and he got into that music insanely deep)
    Hammock (the best of all)
    God Is an Astronaut
    Nest
    Shizzlegizzengarr (freaky...)
Flowers From the Man Who Shot Your Cousin
    This Will Destroy You
    Deepspace

Them two first and the last one had a remarkable impact on me. Deepspace's TocarAnother Empty Galaxy was too impressive. I listened to it only once just because soon after that I fell into my usual "there-is-only-one-music-god" phase. When that happens, I listen to a single, only one artist. ONLY ONE for weeks, or months, non stop. First it was Nik Kershaw (oh heavens please forgive me that moment of weakness), and due to lack of his albums to listen more to, I was (again) easily seduced by irresistible charms of new romantic-new wave era's noble steeds - Depeche Mode, whom I neglected for quite some time. I still haven't shaken the disease (heh), so this is why I can't dig deeper into Deepspace. But I promise this Australian lad I'll return to his creations as soon as I can. It's something in tune with me, somehow.

And now for something completely different - quick calculations. At the moment I've got ~41.500 tracks listened. If I add those listened before the reset, it will give us ~52.650, and if I add all of these songs I had to delete for various reasons, it will equal ~55.700. Without the reset, I would still have Mike Oldfield as my top artist (with over 6k plays), chased by Depeche Mode as a second (over 5k) and Sigur Rós as a third (over 4k). Three different kinds of music, yet so similar. I'm wondering who will become the new sun of my little world after Depeche Mode. The answer is out there : )

    In a nutshell - I <3 last.fm!

  • Album Recommendations

    Jan 4 2009, 11h42 por danielj666

    Description
I love listening to new music and usually listen to several albums I haven't heard before each day. These are the albums I've fallen in love with over the years, the ones I keep coming back to, the cream of the pie, call it what you will.

    Criteria
    * Must be moderately unknown, everyone knows (if) they love The Beatles, Dire Straits etc.
    * Must be albums I keep coming back to, not just the ones I really like the first time around and then get tired of.
    * Some of these might not fit everyone's definition of an album.
    * Limited to one album per artist.

Noe Venable - The Summer Storm Journals

Tags: , 2007, indie folk, singer-songwriter, female vocalists

Description: Noe Venable have grown to be one of my favorite songwriters. Her voice is softer and more mature than ever in this album. (Meaning you might want to listen to all her albums chronologically to build up for this)

Track picks: TocarPrayer for Beauty, TocarIce Dragons, TocarArmy of Nows

Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre Monde

    Tags: , 2007, metal, shoegaze

Description: This album defies the usual restrictions of the Metal genre and blends it with Shoegaze (eventhough Neige claims never to have heard any Shoegaze prior to this) . The result is the maybe most melancholic Metal recording ever.

Track picks: Doesn't matter, just listen to any random track if you don't have the time to listen to all the 6 tracks

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

    Tags: , 2007, indie folk

Description: From Wikipedia Beirut is the band of Zach Condon who dropped out of school at the age of 16 and travelled Europe where he was first exposed to Balkan gypsy music. That reshaped his musical vision and this is the result.

Track picks: Nantes, A Sunday Smile

Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians

    Tags: , 1978, minimalism

Description: I get lost in the complex Rhythms every time I listen to this. Production quality is sublime. You could say the music is alive (listen to it and you'll know what I mean).

Track picks: It's too continuous to pick out tracks

    Boris - Pink

    Tags: , 2005, shoegaze, doom-metal, heavy-metal, stoner-rock

Description: Don't be fooled by the shoegaze opener, this will soon turn into the awesomest and heaviest metal you have heard.

Track picks: TocarPink, TocarWoman on the Screen, Just Abandoned My-Self

    Mono - You Are There

    Tags: , 2006, post-rock

Description: While including all the standards of post-rock; long build-ups and staggering heights, this band also has influences of Classical music (There's string and piano arrangements). This album will blow you away with it's fragile quiet parts and overwhelming loud parts. Being produced by Steve Albini as well this should be irresistible.

    Track picks: Yearning, TocarMoonlight

World's End Girlfriend - dream's end come true

    Tags: , 2002, experimental, electronic

Description: Katsuhiko Maeda's music blends Jazz, post-rock, Electronic, Classical and any other genre you can think of and creates a truly abstract world. This might not be very accessible, I for one thought this was very weird the first time around. I blame that mainly to the music changing so often that you can't really keep up with it and start to like it if you haven't heard it before. Once you're used to it though, the raw emotions will get to you.

Track picks: The 25minute epic that is TocarAll Imperfect Love Song should be a good introduction to the artist.

Mono & World's End Girlfriend - Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain

    Tags: , 2006, classical

Description: I think of listening to this album as taking a long dive in the deepest ocean.

Track picks: (Not needed, it's all one composition)

    Deaf Center - Pale Ravine

Tags: , 2005, dark ambient, electronic

Description: This was the album that introduced me to Ambient (and possibly Electronic) music some years ago. It has a very dark winter mood while not being depressing.

Track picks: White Lake, Stone Beacon

Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks

    Tags: , 2004, classical, electronic

Description: Often repetitive fusion of Classical and Electronic music, carrying a very blue sound as indicated by the title. The simple Violins of TocarOn the Nature of Daylight, heavily supported by dynamics, the bassline of TocarShadow Journal and the splendid piano arrangement that is TocarOn the Nature of Daylight is so eminently composed that I would find it hard to believe if someone told me they didn't like this album.

    Track picks: (Mentioned in description)

    Eluvium - Copia

    Tags: , 2007, ambient

Description: Kind of like an ambient Max Richter. No need to make a lengthy description here, just listen.

Track picks: TocarIndoor Swimming at the Space Station, Prelude For Time Feelers

    Ryuichi Sakamoto - 1996

    Tags: , 1996, classical

Description: This is a compilation from Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1996 tour. Since his world famous soundtrack for the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, he has been widely regarded among the world's best producers and composers.

Track picks: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, 1919, Rain

    Joe Hisaishi - Spirited Away

    Tags: , 2001, classical, soundtrack

Description: I had trouble deciding which Joe Hisaishi album to include here, having explored a big amount of Hisaishi's work. Every melody this man/god has composed since he got his breakthrough with Hayao Miyazaki's second feature film has been like heaven to my ears. While this perfectly conveys the passages of the movie, it's also highly listenable without watching the movie. Track picks consists of melancholic piano melodies of the style I love Hisaishi so much for.

Track picks: One Summer's Day, The Dragon Boy, Day of the River, The Sixth Station

Almost made it A.K.A. notable mentions:
    Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Facing Future
Jeff Wayne - The War of the Worlds
    Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Flowers From the Man Who Shot Your Cousin - Hapless
    Philip Glass - The Photographer

  • Music phases

    Ago 13 2008, 23h50 por jellyfrog23

I listened to a lot of music in high school in the 80's -- R.E.M., They Might Be Giants, The Icicle Works, Prefab Sprout, XTC, The Pogues, The Housemartins, The Colourfield, The Smiths, Men Without Hats, Ultravox... There was a guy in my crowd who would spend all his time at record stores picking out albums based on the track names and then he'd make cassettes for the rest of us (the early days of music sharing!). He found a lot of great stuff that way. And he probably listened to a lot of crap that the rest of us never heard.

Once I graduated and lost my source I wasn't really into music for about, oh, 20 years (rock music, that is -- I did develop an undying love of Broadway musicals during my 20's :D). And then, of course, I stumbled across Last.fm and could discover music for myself with no financial risk. Nice, that.

Over the last year at Last.fm I've noticed a few distinct phases I've gone through.

There was my starting-out phase, where I listened to all the big-name bands I'd heard of out in the world, like Muse, Linkin Park, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, and Travis.

Then I guess maybe I went through a little *ahem* emo phase, the less said about that the better.

And there was my British-bands-whose-names-start-with-"the" phase. The Coral, The Rifles, Maxïmo Park, The Courteneers, The Rakes, The Cribs, The Zutons, Dirty Pretty Things, The Kooks, Little Man Tate, Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, The Sunshine Underground... (okay, not all of them start with "the")

I also had an indie/folk-rock-bands-with-watery-names phase, which included Okkervil River, Shearwater, Great Lake Swimmers, and Midlake. Some bands in this phase with drier names were Crooked Fingers, Fleet Foxes, Flowers From the Man Who Shot Your Cousin, and Band of Horses.

Right now I seem to be in a guys-who-use-their-own-names phase. Um, also known as singer-songwriters. Josh Rouse, Denison Witmer, Ali Whitton, Terry Springford, Fionn Regan, Patrick Park, and Josh Ritter are current favorites.

There's been a bit of Scandinavian music (The Perishers, Kings of Convenience, The Whitest Boy Alive, Seabear), and after listening to bisa's library for a bit, I think I may have a Dutch phase next, starting with Johan and Solo. :)

Of course these phases are not consecutive and discrete; most of them are still going on, I just focus more on one thing than another at any given time. Further recommendations in any of these areas would be most welcome. What am I missing out on?

    Jun 16 2008, 21h19 por izaakalexander

A problem with lastfm is that you discover more artists than you have the time to listen to appropriately. I need to keep track of a few for future listening:

    Among the Oak & Ash
    Patrick Wolf
    Bert Jansch
    Noe Venable

    Thom Piddock
    The Weeping Willards

    May:

    April:

    March:
    The Deep Vibration
    Uncle Earl
    Crooked Still
    Brad Senne
    Barbez

    February:
    Christopher Plunder
CP isn't actually a new discovery, but when I listen to his similar artists:

    http://www.last.fm/listen/artist/Christopher%2BPlunder/similarartists

    it is all remarkable.

    January:

    Joshua Radin

hinahgift025 - Flowers From the Man Who Shot Your Cousin hinah session
Those who visit our website regularly are bound to have come across the name Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin once in a while in the news section. Indeed, we have been following closely Morgan Caris’s project in the last five years and we would very much like to release something with his name on it... But Morgan is a perfectionist and this something is yet to come. Therefore a hinah session had clearly become necessary and the opportunity of an acoustic evening with Shelley Short and Brittain Ashford to inaugurate our Parisian hinah hq was just the perfect excuse!
