Well it took quit a while to listen to some of those few artist, many songs and so on...

A nice suprise was the great progressive Metal band Fates Warning. Even tho they aren't as skilled as Dream Theater, they are a nice band, kinda sad almost nobody knows about them (exept for people that are kinda into Progressive music...)

Flower Travellin' Band is a japanese 70's group that sounds like a fusion between Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd, hard rock and psycadelic at the same time... and it sounds really cool! Kinda sad i only have one record on the computer, it's hard to find those kinda bands on the net...

Last a little bit of... disappointment... yep Foo Fighters. I have heard from a friend how great they are... but for me, they are just to... mainstream radiofriendly rock, even tho some songs are good.

The Blind Boys of Alabamaなんてぶっ飛びませんでしたか? Go Tell It on the Mountain。 There Will Be a Lightも買っているし、その前後に行われたときのライヴDVD、Live at the Apolloも手に入れました。

  • A Brief History Of...Progressive Rock

    Jan 30 2008, 23h33 por BadgerJohn31

The description and playlist below are from the weekly radio show (A Brief History Of…) that my friend and I host on WSUM 91.7fm Madison (the University of Wisconsin's radio station). We selected songs we felt were either historically important or just representative of each specific topic. Please comment if you feel we missed something or just to give your opinion. Remember, however, that we do this show in an hour (about 50 minutes of music). Track length is a major factor in our decisions (shorter is usually better). Thanks! (Thanks to Winter break open scheduling, we were able to make this a three-hour Brief History of Progressive Rock. A one-hour History of Prog show would have been nearly impossible, since many of the most important songs run 8 minutes if not 20. Even so, the show remains far from comprehensive.)

A Brief History of...Progressive Rock is an oxymoron. This show takes a not so brief look at the results of musicians' realizations that rock could be more than just a form of pop music; it could be art. The first hour describes Progressive Rock's origins from a specific subsection of psychedelic music and attempts to delineate when Prog as we know it actually began. The remainder of that hour illustrates the varied sounds of the first wave of popular Progressive Rock bands that exploded onto FM radio in the early 70s.

The second hour asks the question, "how much is too much?" regarding both track length and lyrical content. The final song of the second hour segues into the theme of the final hour in that it is the first track in the playlist not to originate in England. The final segment shows that during Progressive Rock's heyday, similar and often immitation musical forms were common from Japan to America and Germany.

Here's the playlist from this show (notice that in terms of number of songs, this playlist is on par with many of our other one-hour shows!):

    Hour 1: The Beginning

Rock and Roll as Art? / Classical + Rock = ???:
TocarNights in White Satin by The Moody Blues (1967). I wished this linked to the full 7-minute version including Graeme Edge's poem (which we used for the radio show), but alas last.fm only has the single in a full-track playable version. The Moody Blues had been a mediocre R&B-styled band in 1965 and '66, but they didn’t produce consistent hits. In response to their failure, their record company (Decca Records) wanted them to make a rock version of Dvorak's "New World Symphony." Producer Tony Clarke and engineer Derek Varnals, however, reworked the project into Days of Future Passed (without Decca’s permission). Clarke enlisted the London Festival Orchestra conducted by Peter Knight to fill the orchestral portions of the songs. To everyone's surprise, the album was a success that spawned two huge singles (including this song). This surprise psychedelic hit in addition to the revelation caused by The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band that rock & roll could be art led to a creative explosion that we call Progressive Rock. Prog's earliest incarnation, based on Days of Future Passed, was what we now call a separate genre: Symphonic Rock. The following tracks are from this earliest period of Progressive Rock, while it still fit under the term Pyschedelic Rock.
TocarA Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum (1967). Procol Harum derived much of their sound from Classical music. "A Whiter Shade of Pale," the band's first and biggest hit, has a sound styled on some of Johann Sebastian Bach's keyboard compositions.
TocarBouree by Jethro Tull (1969). Ian Anderson, the most famous flutist in Rock history, rearranged Bach's "Bourrée in E minor" into this bluesy rock instrumental. Symphonic Rock did survive as a genre unto itself in the work of bands like Caravan and Electric Light Orchestra.

    The First "Real" Prog:
21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson (1969). Progressive Rock is notable for the professional-level of musicianship of many of the bands. Listen four-and-a-half minutes into this song for an amazing example of group timing. "21st Century Schizoid Man" is the opening track off In The Court Of The Crimson King, the album that started what we now call Progressive Rock in the narrower sense. The music is still somewhat Class
