Fields of the Nephilim surgiu em 1984, com os membros ,Tony Pettitt (baixo), Paul Wright (guitarra), Carl McCoy (vocalista), Nod Wright (bateria) e Gary Wisker (sax). O nome foi inspirado nas lendas bíblicas of the Nephilim, que eram anjos caídos, expulsos do céu para a divulgação do conhecimento oculto (incluindo magia e medicina) para a humanidade. Tal reflectiu interesse permanente em “McCoy” nos assuntos ocultos e misteriosos. A banda começou a trabalhar em abundância e produziu o seu primeiro EP ‘Burning The Fields “, sobre a sua própria etiqueta Tower, Wisker se separou a banda.
Inicialmente, apenas 500 cópias deste E.P. foram processados, mas na força do seu conteúdo, e concertos ao vivo da banda, Fields of the Nephilim logo assinaram pela Beggars Banquet, um rótulo que prometia com várias bandas alternativas dos anos oitenta, tais como The Cult e Bauhaus.
The Nephilim lança o primeiro single, “Power” em 1986. A banda foi continuando a actuação regular e tinham estabelecido a sua própria imagem individual, chapéus, casacos longos e uma pátina farinhenta, mas a essência por trás da imagem da poeira e da morte foi mais duradoura, e deu as primeiras indicações sobre o fascínio The Nephilim com o lado mais obscuro da vida - o desconhecido, o sedutor e mistificadora - que foi permear todas as suas músicas. Nas letras, visual e artística, o conceito de Nephilim bíblico, interpretado por McCoy, foi o impulso por trás de Fields of the Nephilim do começo ao fim.
