  • Weekly top artists, Aug. 12-19...

    Ago 24 2007, 14h57 por senorwoohoo

I'll be completely honest, I've stolen this idea from fellow Last.fm'er MrModernRock. Basically, when I have the time, I'll do a run-down of my Top 10 with some comments on the artists. Nothing too fancy or mind-blowing, but hey, maybe it can help you procrastinate for a few more minutes. I can't guarantee that this will be weekly either. Sometimes, I just don't feel like writing after a week of work that never seemed to end. Not only that, but sometimes I get sick of typing since I do that for a living.

    Anyway, here we go:

    1. Uppanotch at 65 plays
These guys are New York rappers to a 'T.' The beats, the lyrics, the flow, it all reminds me of Nas, Wu-Tang and others. I listened to them so much because I had to review their debut LP, No Greater Love, for [url=http://www.okayplayer.com/reviews/index.php/weblog/more/no_greater_love/OkayPlayer. Yes, that was a shameless plug, but check it out either way. I wasn't the biggest fan of the album, but it's pretty solid and shows potential.

    2. Sean Price at 39 plays
Like Uppanotch, Sean Price's high number of listens comes from doing a review of his latest mixtape, Master P. I had always wanted to listen to Price, but I found myself putting it off. I guess I'm lucky that I got this mixtape for free. The funny part of it is that his type of rap isn't what I'm usually into, but I just really enjoyed his flow and clever lyrics. Expect to see him in my Top 10 again in the upcoming weeks.

    3. Kanye West at 38 plays
This unlikely appearance by 'Ye comes from the fact that I went through his two albums back to back last week at my girlfriend's apartment. She, her friend and I were just hanging out, listening to music and I thought I'd play through The College Dropout and Late Registration since I hadn't listened to them in a while. It's hard for me to enjoying them as much considering how much I dislike his latest stuff. "Stronger" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing'" do nothing for me, even though I've tried countless times to have them grow on me. Kanye is just becoming what I always feared he would: This decade's version of Diddy. The last thing I need to say is that Kanye's only good beat as of late, "In the Mood" off of Talib Kweli's Eardrum, is ruined by 'Ye's verse. I don't know who decided to throw that on there instead of having Talib drop another verse, but it was a huge mistake.

    4. Acid House Kings at 26 plays
All I can say about this group is "wow." If you can tell by my charts, I can dig some of the softer indie-rock fare usually labeled as "twee." I downloaded their album, Sing Along with Acid House Kings, after someone recommended it on OiNK and I was instantly impressed. It's great relaxation music whether I'm intently listening or using it to wind-down. I need to check out another one of their albums because I'm starting to play out this one.

    5. Viktor Vaughn at 25 plays
Ah yes, the darker side of everyone's favorite metal-faced villain. I never truly appreciated DOOM's two albums as VV, but that's all changed. Sitting through Vaudeville Villain and most of Venomous Villain has made me a believer. They're not my favorites in DOOM's growing catalog, but they've worked their way up the list.

    6. Various (Mixed by DJ Mekalek, Hosted by Jahpan) at 24 plays
I got this mixtape through a link provided by prog-hip-hoppers Panacea. It showed off some other artists who are affiliated with Panacea like The Project and Time Machine. I wasn't overly impressed, but I'm thinking I need to listen to this one again. If you want to hear it, just go to Panacea's MySpace page and I'm pretty sure it's all explained there.

    7. Felt (Murs And Slug) at 23 plays
How could these guys not be on my Top 10? After seeing them at rock the Paid Dues stage at Rock the Bells, I became an even bigger fan, if that was possible. I've grown to like their first effort, A Tribute to Christina Ricci, but it still can't touch the second album. I just think that Ant's beats match Murs and Slug's personality much more than the Grouch. From start to finish, A Tribute to Lisa Bonet is one of my favorite feel-good hip-hop albums. If you haven't listened yet, please do it now.

    8. Danny! at 21 plays
While I'm not his biggest fan, one listen to Charm puts him up here by default. If you don't know anything about Danny!, he was recently signed to Definitive Jux, home of El-P, Aesop Rock and Mr. Lif. Danny!'s flow and style has drawn comparisons to Kanye, but I think Danny!'s got the edge when it comes to rapping. He'll probably end up on my Top 10 again sometime soon as he deserves another listen.

    9. Ghostface at 20 plays
This stems from me playing through Fishscale, which I do every few weeks. It's without a doubt one of the best albums not just from Ghost, but in the past few years. It shows that some rappers do get better with age and that Ghost isn't going anywhere. The only possible way to put-down Fishscale is to say it's too long, but I think that might be a stretch. I don't think you could take any tracks off, except for "Three Bricks," because everything fits in perfectly. Also, "The Champ" is easily one of my favorite tracks ever.

    9. Zero 7
I put The Garden on my Relaxation playlist and what do you know, Zero 7's in my Top 10. While I prefer Simple Things, I have played that one out way too much. I need a change-of-pace at night and The Garden was a welcome break from the norm. If you're into downtempo and soothing music, you'll love Zero 7.

  • New Finds This Year (Part I)

    Dez 23 2006, 20h34 por senorwoohoo

To make this easier to read, I'll do a bullet-list format with explanations of why I like the artist and how I found them.

Ghostland Observatory - Fellow CAG, LiquidNight aka Sol here at Last.FM, made a few posts talking about these guys. Since he had shown that his music taste was similar to mine, I had to check them out. I found both of their albums over on Oink and instantly became a fan. Their combination of dance-rock and crazy vocals makes them one of my favorite new artists. I want to check them out in concert but since they are local to Texas, I doubt they will be making the trek to Rhode Island.

Ghostface Killah - Being a total Last.FM whore, I spent much of the first part of the year browsing journals for recommendations. A lot people, who had the same taste as me, were talking about Fishscale and I immediately became interested. I always had a soft-spot for the Wu-Tang Clan, but never to the point that I would actively pursue anything other than their hit singles. Well, all I can say is that upon purchasing Fishscale and playing the hell out of it, I understood the hype for the album. From "Kilo" to "The Champ" to "Momma," I can't get enough it. I have only listened to More Fish a couple of times so I have no real opinion on it yet.

Murs - Ah, Murs, the other half of Felt (Murs And Slug) that I wasn't very well acquainted with. After sending my X-Box back to Best Buy to receive credit for it, I went on a CD shopping spree. I bought I think around 13 or 14 albums that day, one of which was Murray's Revenge. Similar to Ghostface, I had heard many good things about Murs, but since I was using Limewire at the time, I didn't have many options outside of blindly picking up one of his albums. I think it's safe to say that I am glad that I did because Murs, and Murray's Revenge, has become a mainstay in my listening habits. I recently picked up Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, but I need to listen to it a few more times.

Okay, that's all for now. My mac is acting pretty strangely so I might just restart it and then write another one of these later, tomorrow, and maybe on Christmas.

    Peace

I know there's tons more but his is waht I have listened to. Before this, I had only listened to Run-D.M.C. and Public Enemy who are classic rap groups.

  • [Review] Atmosphere - You Can't Imagine How Much Fun Were Having

    Nov 14 2005, 0h59 por eGrim

Atmosphere - You Can't Imagine How Much Fun Were Having

Atmosphere's release of their new album has been a long awaited one, not having a new release since the 2003 release of Seven's Travels with a bonus album Headshots: Se7en, a remastered album, in January to hold us off 'till October. As usual Slug and Ant continue to astound and impress with thought provoked lyrics and well laid out beats.

Having only been turned on to the Rhymesayers Label a little over a year ago I'm glad I jumped on board before the arrival of this album. The musical genius possessed by Ant, shown through the beats created for this album continues to inspire me in my own work in the studio. The beats never cease to impress as they have their own individual flavor from track to track, playing on past strong points in Ant's arsenal.

Slug's vocal delivery is quick and to the point, always crisp and always clear. He's one of the few emcee's I have heard who can paint a clear picture without slowing to a snail's pace. He continues to prove that emcee's from the mid-west can make a splash in the hip-hop scene.

I look forward to future releases from Atmosphere and continue to enjoy the side projects all the artists are involved in through the Rhymesayers Entertainment label. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys the likes of an underground hip-hop album's flavor.
