Fri 13 Jun – Oerol. Terschelling.
For many years now the Oerol festival is famous for its artistic nature. Art, performances and art-performances combined with great locations on the island and that special island feeling. Time for Bertels to check it out, before the magic disappears. The festival gets bigger every year and perhaps it will very hard to live up to the ever growing expectation? So Bertels drove the limo to Central Station where Willemijn, Ruth, Franka and Kronos were already waiting to be picked up by Bertels Transit. An hour and a half drive to Harlingen with
Faithless and
K’s Choice. Bertels arranged a nice parking for the limo and from there the gang was transported by shuttle bus to the passenger terminal where the ferry was ready to steam up to the island. During the two hour boat trip everybody enjoyed the views, the winds and the freshness of wide open water. As a bunch of new individuals, rinsed by the sea, the island was entered and conquered. Luggage was being transported from harbour to camp site by minivan. Bertels and crew rented bikes and peddled very relaxed to the place were tents had to be set up for two nights. Here Peter joined the group. That afternoon everybody was ready to go explore the island by bike, the ideal transportation in a place where there’s a whole lot more bike trails than roads for cars. In fact, there is only one main road from west to east over fourteen kilometres. In Midsland a beverage with a nice grilled ham cheese sandwich (tosti) was delightfully eaten. New energy for the bike ride, through damn nice dunes and woods, to the North Sea where the beach was inspected. Some loose kid was writing a letter, on the almost deserted beach, to be put in a bottle and thrown into the sea with high hopes. But as Bertels approached her and asked what kind of secrets the letter contained, she sprung up and fled like an alarmed deer. Hours go by like minutes when you’re having fun outdoors, in no time at all it was eight o’clock in the evening. A local pizzeria was chosen to have a feast banquet. The pizza’s were huge and delicious. Around eleven The Six went to the festival location Groene strand, where everything was shut down already. It was a reminder to the young folks; this is a cultural festival, not a party zone! So all youngsters went to the local bars and had fun their own way. It was probably two in the morning when Coach Bertels slipped in his sleeping bag. The next day Kronos and Bertels set out as early birds to peddle to the eastern edge of the island, Boschplaat. A long journey over curving bike trails shelf paths and even heavy off road tracks. It took them four hours to round the cape and return. Exhausted but satisfied they joined the rest of the group at festival location Westerkeyn to relax a bit and to enjoy the
Nits concert that was scheduled. Bertels was happy to introduce this great Dutch band to the rest of the group, they were surprised to find out that a band like this existed without their notion. But from now on they know! They loved the concert as much as Bertels did, in fact the atmosphere was so gemutlich that this Nits concert was the best for the Coach. Just half an hour prior to the show Bertels wished Rob success and asked him about the Henk-elephant-foot-situation. He replied that thing were much better and indeed, the front man no longer needed a chair anymore. The show was not slick but very natural and pure, the crowd loved it!
After the great concert The Six Oerol Rookies went to the sunken city, a small township that was covered in sand to prevent a catastrophe since one of the inhabitants made a whole lot of birdhouses who attracted far too many birds resulting in extreme bird poo all over the place that could easily explode when hit by lightning. Great story, great route through the woods, great structure tops sticking out of the sand. Bertels experienced it as he was walking the only street of Dogville, without a doubt the inspiration for this sunken township. After this bird poo and snowball experience the seven set of to a barn were a documentary about yet another small township was shown, Bonanza somewhere in the USA. Only five people live there and they tell us what occupies them, how they spent their days and what makes them want to stay in such a desolate place. Of course there was a touch of conflict and redneck philosophies. It became very hot inside the barn and several people left earlier. Moderate documentary with one interesting really development, after that the story just bled death. In the village Midsland a quick snack was eaten because of the Oranje fever and the pressure for the quarter final against Russia. At Westerkeyn a big screen was installed and thousands Oranje fans came to support the Dutch team. Naturally the Oerol organisation had to give the event a special twist and arranged live music instead of the commentators voices. The crowd went mad as they wanted to hear what was going on at the soccer field, but got ice hockey tunes from the Nits. Luckily the organisation allowed the audio but the Nits played on, now better in style with the crowd. This was a funny experiment, back to the old days when a film had a live soundtrack from an orchestra. Eventually Oranje lost and everybody was very disappointed. The evening however was great and the weather extremely nice. Unfortunately Coach could not stay longer, due to a lack of free days, otherwise he would have stayed to see

The next day Bertels got the kids fresh croissants and bunnies, which they loved. The tents were packed again and The Six set course for the ferry. Again the boat trip was very nice and at the mainland the limo was ready. During the ride home Bertels made sure it was all Nits coming from the speakers and the kids loved it. Coach dropped them of at Central Station and went to Bertels Cube were he will sit back and enjoy every phase of this great Oerol weekend over and over again.
