  • Another "How Varied Is Your Music Taste?"

    Dez 6 2009, 19h08 por energeticlove

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • Eclectic Score

    Mar 10 2008, 1h40 por adirgeforher

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

    My eclectic score is currently

    100/100

  • Cocteau Twins. . .and other bands I liked for years but just didn't realize it. .

    Ago 12 2007, 7h49 por KMFCM

It always makes me laugh, that I didn't get into the Cocteau Twins until around 2002 when a buddy of mine made a mix CD of them for me.
It's hilarious, because I was already listening to several bands who were influenced by them quite a bit.
It's also hilarious, because I'd had the song "mizake the mizan" on a tape since high school. I had recorded it off the local college radio station, but they'd never said who it was. Discovering this mystery years later was something.

This happened with a lot of bands.
I used to record a lot of things I heard on the local college station (in peekskill, we can get the Vassar college station on the radio. I discovered it at around age 14-15 and listened to it religiously), and a lot of times they either had no DJ on air, or the kid would play such a long block that by the time it ended, I'd run out of tape. . .or they just wouldn't say what they played.

Before I actually knew who the Pixies were, I had a random live version of "debaser", half of "vamos"(before the record skipped) and "the sad punk" (which, at the time, I REALLY thought was the Melvins or someone like that. . . . ) on a tape. I didn't find out about the last one until I finally checked out the 3rd and 4th albums (I bought Doolittle and Surfer Rosa on cassette. . .I never heard the other two albums til I got a CD player).
I had "taste" and "drive blind" on a tape before ever knowing who Ride were.
Before I knew who Swervedriver were, I had already heard most of the songs on Ejector Seat Reservation. The guy just left the album playing when I finished his show.
the song "corners" by Assuck, I'd had that on a tape for at least 5 years before I ever knew about them.
Other bands I eventually found out about this way:
All Out War, Big Black, Unwound

Another thing that would happen a lot was, I'd have more than one song by a band and not realize it.
For example, when I found out that "debaser" was from Doolittle, I bought that. I loved it, so I bought Surfer Rosa and it turned out to have at least 2 "mystery" songs on it. This happened a lot with Sleater-Kinney, Excuse 17 and Heavens to Betsy. . . .hear a song, think one band sings it, turns out to be one of the other two.

Those were weird days, but also a lot of fun.

  • List of Queer Artists and Band Members

    Jan 30 2007, 3h31 por bunkadoo

This is a list of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender artists and bands with LGBT members that I've been compiling for the last few years as part of the Queer Artists and Band Members group.

If you know of more that I've missed, send me a message and I'll add them. Also, if there are ones that you think shouldn't be on this list, let me know so I can add links to more info.

For living people, this list is based on how they identify. If they've had same-sex experiences but say they're heterosexual, they won't be listed here. That also means that if they say they're bisexual but have never had a same-sex experience, they will be listed.

It's alphabetized by first letter, so if you can't find a band that should be here, try looking under "The."

  • because god likes big, round numbers

    Ago 29 2006, 21h06 por furburger

well, i've hit one thousand tracks. this seems rather UNimpressive compared to those who have over ten thousand, but i don't care. a small victory, but a victory nonetheless, etc.

and in honor of the fact that i have far too much time on my hands and can sit around listening to music all day if i wish, here are my top albums of the 90s. in alphabetical order, no less. because god likes alphabetization, too.

(i don't actually own any bands whose names start with numbers, so shut up. they mostly stink, anyway.)

    The Amps : Pacer
    Angelfish : Angelfish
    Babes in Toyland : Fontanelle
    Belly : King
    Bikini Kill : Pussy Whipped
    Blur : Blur
The Boo Radleys : C'mon Kids
Boredoms : Onanie Bomb Meets Sex Pistols
    The Breeders : Last Splash
    Bush Tetras : Beauty Lies

  • wow.. . .I can't listen to Atari Teenage Riot anymore. . .

    Jun 24 2006, 3h21 por KMFCM

. .seriously, I just dragged my Atari Teenage Riot stuff out of . .wherever I had it hidden.

I can't bloody listen to them anymore. Hanin is so annoying!!!!
I mean yeah, as I've gotten older, my pechant for female vocals has all but completely died, but I still dig Dahlia Seed and Team Dresch and Excuse 17(which is about as close to riot grrl as I will allow myself to go anymore. . .I mean shit. . I feel like one of those white kids who listens to dead prez and thinks "why these people wanna kill me?") every once in a while. . . but shit. The only ATR song I can listen to now is "destroy 2000 years of culture". . .just cuz she's not in it. Don't they hate each other now? Gee, I wonder why.

I knew there was another reason why I like Alec Empire's solo shit.
