  • Jhelli Beam & Mirman

    Jun 9 2009, 23h36 por ShShawShShane

first things first, man, you're messing with the worst.
I'll be sticking pins in your head, like a fucking curse.

    oh, wait. I mean...

first things first: I finally got my hands on the new Busdriver
album. it's called Jhelli Beam. it was released today. it is,
without a doubt, one of the best albums of the year. that's right,
    it's fanfuckingtastic.

featuring production by the likes of Daedelus, Nobody, Omid, and
Nosaj Thing, the beats are top notch. there are guest emcee spots
by Mykah 9 & Nocando, and appearances from Nick T. (of The Unicorns/Islands) and John Dietrich (of Deerhoof). if you are a fan of underground hip hop or are looking for a reason to not dislike "rap", you need this album. opening track 'Split Seconds (Between Nannies And Swamis)' could very well be my nomination for song of the year.

I would also like to share, with my usual fawning admiration, some new
Eugene Mirman material. this time, it's a youtube clip of the beloved
mir-man giving a commencement speech for the 2009 class of his former
high school. hold on, did I say "a commencement speech"? I meant, the
    best commencement speech EVER.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZlQd2Eg-9w

    enjoy!

Thirty Questions 'Bout Ma 30 Top Bands!!!

    1. How did you get into 29?
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti: Well hey, I actually remember this pretty well! It was back at the beginning of last november, and I was looking at Eric Fensler's website to the video for Politely Declined that he made. I immediately fell in love with the video and the song. It's still definitely my fave Ariel Pink song.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Krisiun: Wow, I totally know this too! It was TocarOminous cuz it was on a Century Media Sample I got with Napalm Death's Code is Red. Though it honestly wasn't until I heard them play it live that I really fuckin loved em.

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Kraftwerk Shit, I don't really know. A lotta their stuff my friends ripped for me and stuff, but I did by a few live shows and early stuff from Malcolm, the vendor who comes to Bard every so often. I dunno how many really, maybe ten... maybe less.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
Fine Young Cannibals Oh my, lemme think... I really love Hard As It Is, Don't Look Back, and others, but I think I love their first album the most, and it's tough but I think I'd say Don't Ask Me To Choose. Which is fitting as a kind of shitty pun, too.

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
Erasure Hell, I dunno. I'm currently having trouble deciding whether I like their early, classic stuff or their newer, more mature stuff more. But I've always loved Witch In The Ditch. So there.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
John Cale Oh, soo many! Child's Christmas In Wales, for one. That beautiful version of Style It Takes from Circus Live. Barracuda. Pretty much most of his stuff.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?
A Tribe Called Quest Midnight. Buggin' Out. Scenario. Hell, pretty much all of Low End Theory (excluding a few) and many on Midnight Marauders. It's alll good.

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Cannibal Corpse Haha, actually when I was sick and kinda having a terrible little panic attack freshman year, watching the Make Them Suffer music video made me feel a lot better. Comfort music, yessirree. That and the time my dad got me a ive set of theirs and I asked him to name the songs and he was like "Well, I'm kinda not sure I want to say this out loud... Meat Hook... Sodomy?" That story will never get old.

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Wire Oh, many, depending on my mood. Really love The 15th. More kinda rockin songs like Mannequin and stuff are great too. Really all of their first 3 or so albums make me happy most of the time.

    10. How many times have you seen 26 live?
Maria Bamford Curses, I almost got to see her in the city with Andy Kindler last April or so, but I couldn't get down. But SOMEDAY!

    11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Pet Shop Boys Hmm, possibly Go West on DDR Extreme for PS2, haha. Or maybe West End Girls somewhere.

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?
a-ha Oh, certainly Scoundrel Days. Though Hunting High And Low will of course always be a fave.

    13. Who is your favorite member of 1?
Depeche Mode Haha, I dunno. Dave.

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Television Nah. I honestly dunno how they'd be now (whoever "they" would be, is anyone outside of Verlaine still in the group) but I'm sure there's a chance they would still be rockin.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Joy Division Heh, I think that's a rather tough thing to have. I remember listening to She's Lost Control and Isolation while I was alone housesitting and I felt like such a dour little badass. I remember first hearing them and realizing it was like the perfect kind of music for me at that point in my life (not so much emotionally as just in terms of the kind of music I was searching for at the time) and how, no matter how popular or whatever they are with everyone they still feel very personal to me, it's still "ma shit".

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?
Kreator Hell, I'm not sure. I think the default answer here would be Pleasure To Kill, which sounds about right, but I also love the entire Extreme Aggression album, and I even still hold a spot in ma heart for the stuff I originally got into, like Impossible Brutality, as kinda not so great the new stuff is (comparatively, of course)

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Destruction Damnit, all I really have is the deuxe greatest hits albums and that Thrash Anthems one. Whichever one rocks, I guess. Write me down as a buffoon here, folks.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?
Eugene Mirman Oh, definitely his remix/dub thing at the end of his first album. Orrr the other song at the end of En Garde. Both are great songs of his.

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 25?
Talk Talk No doubt It's My Life, though I think Talk Talk was the first song I got really nuts about.

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?
New Order Goood question! I've been pondering this a lot lately. I'd say Brotherhood, though Low Life is very close there too.

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?
The English Beat Probably Save It For Later. Like everyone else. Or I Confess or Whine And Grine/Stand Down Margaret

    22. What is you favorite song by 8?
Wild Man Fischer Wow, there's a lotta em I can think of, maybe his cover of Yesterday or Go To Rhino Records. Or Pronounced Normal.

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
[artist}Sodom[/artist} None! I almost got to see them with Immolation. Damnit. Hopefully, if they ever come back to the US I'll catch em this time!

    24. What is the worst song by 12?
[artist}Napalm Death[/artist} I haven't really delved into their apparently no good mid 90s stuff, but I guess in retrospect doing those songs with Jamie Jasta was kinda a crappy idea. That's no fun.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
[artist}Daniel Johnston[/artist} Walking The Cow. Hell yeah.

    26. What is your favorite album by 7?
    [artist}Wesley Willis[/artist} Definitely Rush Hour.

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?
    [artist}Yazoo[/artist} Too Pieces. Awesome song.

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
[artist}Darkane[/artist} Several. Fatal Impact, all those songs, all happy.

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?
[artist}Todd Barry[/artist} Love em all (maybe too much... I can't believe he's already my 4th highest artist) but I think From Heaven really is his best so far.

    30. How many albums do you own by 20?
[artist}Big Country[/artist} At east 6 or 7, at least I used to before I gave Why The Long Face and Without A Safety Net to a friend and never got em back and lost the mp3s... fuck.

    WOW WHAT FUN!!!

  • Summer Concerts

    Abr 29 2008, 23h51 por Jelone

With graduation pending and finals looming, I find myself looking towards a bright future in homelessness. Provided I can scrape together enough chump change, though, I'd like to see a few concerts this summer. After scopin' out those Internets, I've found myself quite a few. Below's my wish list; each show comes with pros and cons.

4/28 Secret Machines @ North Star bar
Pros: Secret Machines are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. I haven't seen them since before they put out Ten Silver Drops, which happens to be my favorite SM album. Plus, word on the street is they're playing new material from an alleged third album. Also, I already bought a ticket to this, so I'm kind of locked in at this point.

Cons: Why bring opening acts when you could just play for 3 hours?

    5/3 The Kills @ Johnny Brenda's
Pros: I've been digging their new record Midnight Boom quite a bit. Alison Mosshart was awesome in Discount, and I'd like to see her in a live setting, even if it's just via Kills. Plus, it's something to do while the Misses is in Canada.

Cons: I really don't see myself finding the money for a concert ticket this week. Plus, looking back at their catalogue, I find really only like the new album plus a handful of older tracks.

5/5 Flight of the Conchords and Eugene Mirman @ Tower Theater
Pros: Two of my favorite comedy acts on Cinco de Mustache.

Cons: It's sold out and I don't have a ticket.

5/8 Japanther @ Circle of Hope
Pros: Not only do I get see a band I've been curious about, but I get to support the easily frighted, never slighted Erin Szran, who booked the show.

Cons: There's like 27 other bands on the bill, and I've never heard of any of them. Also, Japanther seems to have a record of attracting dillweeds who get their shows shut down...

    5/10 The Cure@ Wachovia Spectrum
Pros: I get to see one of my favorite bands of all time. This was originally supposed to go down in the fall, so by the time I actually see them, I'll have been waiting for this specific show for almost about a year.

Cons: They canceled the fall tour to work on new material. Also, the Spectrum sounds like ass.

5/17 Tiger Army @ the Troc
Pros: Finally get to see the best psychobilly band get all spooky. A publicist for opening act War Tapes might be getting my heterolifemate Eric and me in for free.

Cons: Free punk rock? Poss. dinner at Rangoon beforehand? C'mon. Unless they exclusively play the one TA record I don't have (the 3rd one), there's no way I won't love this.

    5/22 X @ the TLA
Pros: I'm seeing one of the best original left coast punk bands for free with my best friend, Michelle K. Byrne.

Cons: What're the odds they'll play Ain't Love Grand? from start to finish?

    5/24 Flaming Lips & RJD2 @ the Festival Pier
Pros: I want Wayne Coyne to roll all over me and then dress me up like a furry. Drew Lazor introduced me to RJD2 via Bruce Lee movies, and I maintain that is the best way to listen to Dead Ringer

Cons: Eh, it's a festival, which means a shit ton of drunk and/or high people. And haven't been that wild about the Lips or RJD2's last few albums.

5/30 Jeremy Enigk @ North Star Bar
Pros: The former Sunny Day Real Estate frontman has put out 2.5 awesome acoustic-y solo joints, and it'd be neat to experience such intimate tunes in an intimate setting. Plus, he's a friggin' legend.

Cons: Not sure if this show is gonna stir my feet, ya know? Plus, as much as I love Return of the Frog Queen, I'd still rather hear Diary.

5/31 H2O, Crime in Stereo, and more @ the Troc
Pros: Bridge Nine is getting me in for free. CiS had one of the best records of 2007 and I can already vouch for their solid live show. H2O played the first show I ever went to; I feel like I owe it to 'em to welcome them back to the music life.

Cons: Eric and I might eat at Rangoon before this one too. OH NOOOOOOOS.

...or H2O could play that "I Want I Want" song.

6/12 Death Cab for Cutie @ The Mann Center
Pros: It's been about 4 years since I last saw DCFC. I imagine they still know how to juice my jahones.

Cons: Rogue Wave is opening which sucks, and I've already seen DCFC live before. And there's plenty of people on this list that I haven't seen.

    6/18 R.E.M. w/ Modest Mouse @ the Mann Center
Pros: Two alternative bands with truly, truly impeccable studio outputs.

Cons: I've seen/heard enough bootlegs to know R.E.M. is boring as fuck live, and Modest Mouse has let me down live before. Unless they play The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica , I imagine I'll still be disappointed, even though I did love their last record. Maybe if MM were in a headlining slot, I'd feel a lil more inclined towards this...

    6/26 Ladytron @ TLA
Pros: One of my biggest concert regrets is not going to the Ladytron/CSS show from fall 2006. Would've been sweet, but this summer offers me a chance to catch both acts. Ladytron is up first and, given that their albums are so synthy/electronic, I don't see how this couldn't be a cool lil dance party.

    Cons: I can't dance.

6/28 Devo and The Hold Steady @ the Festival Pier
Pros: I love Devo's early material. "Gates of Steel" is my jam! Plus, I can finally figure out my feelings about the Hold Steady once and for all.

Cons: Devo is pretty fucking old. THS could very easily suck.

7/30 Rx Bandits and Portugal. The Man @ TLA
Pros: Portugal is super hot live. I haven't seen the Bandits in a while.

Cons: I just saw Portugal earlier this month. Live footage indicates that the Bandits are significantly more into jamming endlessly than they used to be, which means I prolly won't hear much Progress or Resignation material.

    8/5 Bloc Party @ TLA
Pros: Bloc Party gives it their all live. Last time I saw them I got 2 encores, a good amount of rarities, the works.

Cons: Already seen 'em on a better bill with front row seats. Plus, that second album was really lame. Plus plus, a lot of BP fans are self-involved cunts. Not all of 'em, but enough to make me question this show.

8/7 Cansei de Ser Sexyand The Go! Team @ TLA
Pros: Dancepocalypse. Plus, I'm fairly certain Nate, Erin Szran, and Mandy will be there, which would rule.

Cons: CSS's record craps out half way through and the Go! Team's 2nd album was ho-hum. Not sure if all that instrumentation will shine through live too.

8/10 Rancid w/ Big D and the Kids Table@ the Electric Factory
Pros: It's motherfucking Rancid with the D. If I go, I'll get a chance to meet Michelle's other lover, Irma.

Cons: Between Big D personally attacking me over dumping on their remix album on punknews.org (Seriously? The one time I don't like a D record...!) and Springman Records' no-showing on that D vinyl I ordered back in January (expect pain), I suspect I may need to break up with one of my favorite bands.

Oh, and Lars could always have a seizure, or something. Or they could play "Vampire Girl" for 2 hours, which actually sounds more like a pro.

8/29 Nine Inch Nails @ the Wachovia Center
Pros: I finally get to see NIN with Michelle. So romantic! Year Zero was so fucking awesome too...

Cons: Large venue = not as cool as being upfront at the Factory for the With Teeth tour. What if he plays a bunch of songs from Ghosts?

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. oh what a hilarious show tonight. kinda odd seeing a comdey show at a rock venue, but it was cool being able to be in the front row and not have sweaty bodies plummeting into your back.

well it was patton oswalt, brian posehn, eugene mirman and morgan murphy tonight. i came mostly for brian and a little lesser for patton, but suprisingly found that i enjoyed eugene mirman the most. i hadn't heard of him before the show but as i type this through the wonder of torrent i'm downloading two of his albums. well after the show i went up to them all and talked for a bit, telling them i enjoyed it a lot, shaking hands and etc. i bought some show exclusive album there and got patton to sign it. additionally i went up to brian and asked for a picture. i kinda wanted him to sign something, but as the picture took a little bit to take as it was (the helpful volunteer who offered to take it needed two take 2 shots as the flash didn't go the first time. i'd hate to be 'that guy' who holds things up for everyone else waiting around. thinking about it now i kinda wish i bought a poster from the merch stand and got them all to sign it. whatever though...i met them all and that's way cooler than any signature. it's the memories, those are what it's about. plus i have some good icebreakers now if i ever meet any fans of secondary characters of the king of queens or just shoot me.
