  • Favorite Albums Project (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

    Nov 23 2009, 12h42 por Funkafonik

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the incredible Albums that have been released up to now.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

Seeing the amount of albums I listen(ed) to, I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year. An ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually already been released before.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
    DIVIDED BY
    Album's Total Running Time

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

    (**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
    (*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.

  • Sounds To Consume

    Out 3 2009, 13h45 por monas

After some sucessful Pre-ordering & CD shopping I've come into the acquisition of 30 new CDs. I don't know if I'll like some of them and with others there's a strong indication that I probably will. Update: While I listen to these I'm putting them all in nice neat little boxes.

    Awesome:
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delerious: Awesome album; stylistically varied all on a metal base. My favourite track keeps shifting... the Russain stomp of 'Vodka Inferno', the retirggered vocals floating around in 'Bedlam Sticks' the flat-out greatness of 'A Tapdancer's Dilema'. It's all good.
Skeletonbreath - Eagle's Nest, Devil's Cave: Awesome album; I think they sound a bit like Estradasphere crossed with Deadweight in an instrumental stripped-down kind of sense. Violin + Bass + Drums instrumentalising all over the shop.

    Good:
Skindred - Roots Rock Riot: This album's good. At first I thought it was a bit dull as nothing immeadiately grabbed me, but after a few listens it's greatness began to shine through.
Mariachi El Bronx - El Bronx: The mariachi shaped void in my music collection has been filled. I'd like to listen to this album with a healthy dose of sunshine beaming on me... October is not providing this to me. Good stuff.
The Fall of Troy - The Fall of Troy: Half of these got reworked for the follow up Doppelganger, and as I'm used to those version these feel slightly off - But interesting none-the-less. I also find myself wanting them to be faster (Especially the earlier version of F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.)

    Indifferent:
Jaguar Love - Jaguar Love EP: I love the first 2 tracks as I've been listening to the album proper for ages; but the b-side I estentially bought this for is a bit so-so.
The Dandy Warhols - Odditorium: The songs are rather unmemorable... Then again I don't like all Dandy Warhol songs.

    Confused:
Family Force 5 - Dance Or Die
Gil Mantera's Party Dream - Bloodsongs: These 2 CDs confuse me.

    A Mistake:

    Unclassified:
Skindred - Shark Bites & Dog Fights
Made Out of Babies - Coward
    The Fucking Champs - VI
Les Savy Fav - Go Forth
    N.I.L.8 - Doug
Harvey Danger - Where Have All the Merry Makers Gone?
Giant Squid - Metridium Field: Erm on closer inspection it would appear someone has put an Enslaved album in the Giant Squid case. That's odd. So I now own Below the Lights.
    The Crystal Method - Vegas
Professional Murder Music - Professional Murder Music
    Psychostick - Sandwich
Mustard Plug - In Black & White
Dub Trio - Another Sound is Dying
The Epoxies - Stop the Future
Liars - They Were Wrong, So We Drowned
    United Nations - United Nations
    Hot Hot Heat - Elevator

  • Recommend Some Guy Music Part 2: The Sequel That Will Be More Successful Than The…

    Jul 14 2009, 3h56 por Someguy1332

Alright, so once again I find myself at a musical stand still. My recommendations aren't really helping me with much aside from getting into power violence. The previous recommend me music journal worked so damned well and introduced me to some of my new favorite bands including WHY? and Kylesa.

But now I've got a broadband connection and some hard drive space that needs to filled up with excellent music.

That's where you come in last.fm community. Recommend me anything and I'll listen to it, unless it's Brokencyde or something that's terrible beyond words.

AND NOW FOR SOME ARTIST SPAM SO PEOPLE WILL ACTUALLY READ THIS:

Lifelover, The World/Inferno Friendship Society,Murder by Death, Irepress, Aesop Rock, The Flaming Tsunamis,Carla Kihlstedt,Mischief Brew, Yyrkoon, Those Poor Bastards,Defiance, Ohio, Audrey, Big D and the Kids Table, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Estradasphere, Morphine, By the End of Tonight Ayreon, Akphaezya,El Ten Eleven, Maybeshewill,Deadboy & the Elephantmen, P.O.S., Baroness, Atmosphere, Acid Bath, Amesoeurs, Katatonia, 2 Foot Yard, Streetlight Manifesto, Opeth, Anathema, Eyedea, Agalloch, This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb, Saxon Shore, Fantômas, maudlin of the Well, dälek, Agents of Oblivion, The Gathering, Stars, Death, Idiot Flesh, Russian Circles, Dog Fashion Disco, Sonic Boom Six, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

I knew I'd find a use for that paste your taste feature!

Those 50 bands aren't going to give me enough traffic!

Porcupine Tree, Unexpect, Giant Squid, Demons & Wizards, Gamma Ray, Mad Caddies, Blind Guardian, God Is an Astronaut, Crippled Black Phoenix, Symphony X, Miasma & The Carousel of Headless Horses, Hammers of Misfortune, Iron Maiden, Mogwai, Municipal Waste, Nevermore, Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia..., Evergrey, Stolen Babies, Tortoise,Bloodbath, Kiuas, Stream of Passion, Judas Priest, Epica, Explosions in the Sky, Angra

    OK that should be enough.

I'll comment on your recommendations when I get bored.

Make the magic happen, last.fm community!

  • The last.fm experience - hopefully to be continued for every user soon...

    Jun 26 2009, 17h06 por groemupaz

Last.fm is – or has been probably… regarding the current situation of just being completely free in three remaining countries (UK, USA and Germany), we should going to think about any fitting and comfortable solution for this pretty unpleasant problem – a really great opportunity for all the music lovers worldwide to celebrate the already known favourites as well as to (re)discover plenty of old and new, promising, incredible and truly important artists! Despite the further development of this site, I’d like to express my gratitude for experiencing more than a couple of artists I wouldn’t even recognize otherwise, at least perhaps… So this is a random list (very incomplete indeed) in no particular order of absolutely remarkable stuff found here including short descriptions – if possible…

    Geezers of Nazareth
    got summer?

    Ultimate Spinach
if you like 60s/70s psychedelia, you’ll adore this

    Туризм
among The Gathering the best in trip rock

    !Mounted Insanity Cannon!
    stereo brainshaker

    Yael Naïm
chanson pop, a voice to discover and catchy but sophisticated tunes

    Opera Dog
    noisy mind bending trip hop

    Sicknote
    take-no-prisoners-ultra-move-groove-music

Jaked off shorts and loaded heads
very promising next generation crossover, more than an eye to keep on

    Kim & Buran
    easy listening-lounge-dance-coffee-cocktail-sounds

    Monsieur Cheu
never heard about instrumental hip hop before, supposedly just to listen to as well as thinking your own lyrics or simply use it to perform to; ask him…

    Wibutee
nuelectrojazz: we are in space, space you!

    Anaal Nathrakh
the most fuuukin’ brutal extreme metal experience since City blew my mind back in 1998

    Aaron Spectre
music for the dawn; calm warmth and big waves

    Tyskarna Från Lund
    internet Aquarius

    Jerzy Milian
funky jazz featuring Zappa-esque humour, seriously

    Ska-P
we need more ska like this

    Stereo_DNA
political electronically flavoured indusTrial hop containing heavy beats

    Tarantella
the masters of death country, very cool, very dry, very good

    Musica Per Bambini
totally weird mixture, if you praise bands such as Carnival in Coal, Estradasphere or Waltari, Mouse on Mars, Mr. Bungle you definitely should give them a try

    Amorf Ördögök
unique trippy deep-yet-easy listening, and bbq-dance

    Cold Coda
future industrial crossover, it definitely rocks funny

    Eyedea & Abilities
    try to say “rhyme flow“

    Diablo Swing Orchestra
this is the symphonic swing metal attack

    Malente
    dance to the music

    Chris Mancini & Lennart
    groovy fun and funny groove

    Sad Forever
usually, music with demonstrative attitude quickly decreases… not these guys and their we-don’t-care-deportment, on the contrary: this is growing crossover-rock that sometimes reminds me (not: does sound like!) on early Kyyria and VAST

    Lizzy Ling
neo-chanson with a significant note of Serge Gainsbourg

    The Fugs
proto punk is one of the correct tags to use… essentially topical actually

    Alienaqtor
unique electronica, demanding as well as strictly enjoyable

    Stolen Babies
the birth of circus metal, genuine funny yet intense and skilled

    Pete Philly & Perquisite
old and new school hip hop / rap in perfect synthesis

    Laboratorium
kings of jazz fusion, no comment

    Flowjob
if 4/4 base drum, then this one… either dance or chill – and everything in between: move your noodle, man

    Jonas Ruchenhever
soundscapes to be experienced loudly, dark and bright – ambient, drone-maniacs and doom-enthusiasts ought to risk a listen as well as connoisseurs of Jean-Michel Jarre and Giacinto Scelsi

    White Noise
over the top strangely psychedelic weirdness, pure art

Keep on discovering! Try tag-stations, neighbour’s and friend’s libraries, check your recommendations, finally, least possible thing to happen is getting surprised – and, surely, maintain your personal treasures! Thus pathetic, I’ll go for a drink now – cheers and good luck, b.

  • Eclectic Electric

    Mai 17 2009, 4h54 por vmgg

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • Retrospekcja: Podsumowanie roku 2001

    Mai 15 2009, 8h26 por Ithil_pl

Z ostrym poślizgiem podsumowanie pierwszego roku XXI wieku.

    1. Converge - Jane Doe (metalcore, mathcore)
    2. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part (singer/songwriter)
    3. The Dismemberment Plan - Change (indie rock)
    4. Kylie Minogue - Fever (dance pop)
    5. Techno Animal - The Brotherhood of the Bomb (experimental hip-hop)
    6. Ścianka - Dni Wiatru (experimental)
    7. Fennesz - Endless Summer (glitch, experimental)
    8. Opeth - Blackwater Park (progressive metal)
    9. William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops (ambient, minimalism)
    10. Howard Shore - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (film score)
    11. Tim Hecker - Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again (ambient)
    12. Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible (psytrance, psybient)
    13. Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds Of (ambient, drone)
    14. Jan Jelinek - Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records (ambient techno, minimal techno)
    15. Lenny Valentino - Uwaga! Jedzie tramwaj (dream pop, slowcore)
    16. cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD (abstract hip-hop)
    17. Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives (glitch hop)
    18. Björk - Vespertine (progressive pop)
    19. Richie Hawtin - DE9: Closer to the Edit (minimal techno)
    20. Radiohead - Amnesiac (experimental rock)
    21. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Grand Opening And Closing! (avant-prog, avantgarde metal)
    22. Akira Yamaoka - Silent Hill 2: Original Soundtrack (mostly dark ambient)
    23. The Angels of Light - How I Loved You (folk rock, experimental)
    24. Steven R. Smith - Tableland (experimental, post-rock)
    25. Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World (neo-psychedelia, progressive pop)
    26. Colour Haze - CO2 (stoner rock)
    27. Hood - Cold House (indie rock)
    28. World's End Girlfriend - farewell kingdom (post-rock, electronic)
    29. Joe Henry - Scar (adult alternative)
    30. Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein (abstract hip-hop)

Warte wspomnienia są także płyty takich artystów jak:

Buddy Guy, Clark, Daft Punk, Estradasphere, Herbert, Jay-Z, Lali Puna, Low, Lovage, Mercury Rev, Plaid, Rhythm & Sound, Telefon Tel Aviv, The Microphones, The Shins, Tool, Venetian Snares

Do 14 maja przesłuchałem 128 płyt przeróżnych gatunków. Średnia trochę niższa niż w tamtym roku (6,33), ale zauważcie że płyt w 2000 przesłuchałem sporo mniej. Na podsumowanie 2002 nieco poczekacie, teraz czas nadrobić tegoroczne zaległości.
