Plenty of bands give out free Merch and are still around. Just look at Reuben! free posters, stickers, badges and bars of fudge and they are going stronger than ever. Shame these spilt such a small time after their album.

engerica rocked... And dave mike and neil were so cool and friendly. i met them when they played at my local venue, i was street teaming for them (as an unknown band), and i was trapped by the music! it was really before anyone had heard of them what so ever... there were about 30 people at the gig... of which about half were from their crew and the venue staff!
