    continuing this series. the top 93 | part 1 | part 2

    2003
Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn

More avant-garde post rock from Canada, and plenty more to come. The sonic soundscapes of this album wash over you like rain and leave you feeling at peace. What more can you ask for?

The Postal Service - Give Up

The album that launched a thousand Livejournals. Cross Death Cab with Dntel for an electronica cross-over hit with irascibly cute songs with detached introverted lyrics to fit the lo-fi sounds.

The Cooper Temple Clause - Kick Up the Fire, and Let the Flames Break Loose

Exquisitely crafted snarling rasping indie rock. Takes you on a fast and furious journey but lets up in all the right places, and great use of electronics as well.

    2004
    Clogs - Stick Music

Band of The National's violinist Padma Newsome, Clogs released 4 eclectic and acclaimed albums this decade with another to follow in 2010. This almost certainly isn't their "best", but as their albums are pretty fucking hard to track down it's the best one I've heard. Put this minimalist stringed epic on in the dark, turn it up, and close your eyes.

Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill

Sadly, the 00s saw Elliott Smith leave this world. This is the album he spent three years making, completed posthumously and missing some of its best tracks. There's a hint that the best songs he had to write never got the chance to be heard amongst these dark and hopeful paeons.

    Emiliana Torrini - Fisherman's Woman

Singer-songwriteress album to end all of them. A crystalline voice like a siren, Emiliana weaves an album of stripped-back acoustic numbers that make you wish you were older.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Claustrophobic and grandiose American Civil War nostalgia from seven lads from Chichester. Party like its 1776.

    Saul Williams - Saul Williams

A stream of powerful, angry, self-actualizing, intelligent, danceable, vivid, story-weaving, eclectic, seguetastic, guitar heavy and bombastic hiphop anthems. Saul Williams is one of the finest poets of our generation and it was on this album and not the later collaboration with Trent Reznor that he really hit the sublime. An unbelievable live show as well, but he's not over here very often.
