Back in 2002 Volvoc (aka Isoul8) put togehter one of my all-time favourite compilations for Irma Records: Soul in Motion. The artists featured are associated with the two cities Detroit and London, and the sound is a melange of the two, combining soulful techno with broken beat. It got a lots of soul indeed, and buzzwords like high tech jazz or future soul come to mind.

The Past is All I See

Ah yes, the inevitable "best of" list. Now, in some ways this one differs in the regard that it is not all about stuff that came out in '08. Not sure if that's a critique on this year's releases or simply a matter of changing tastes on my part. I'd say it's a combination of the latter as well as my propensity to gravitate toward quality releases from years past.

As such, the 2008 list is a bit slim:

Deepblak has been stirring up the scene recently with its though soulful and deep, also dark, futuristic, even industrial sound. Playing a healthy mixture of jazz, techno and hip hop, Aybee gathered his label-mates Erik Rico, AFRIKAN SCIENCES, Black Jazz Consortium, O1O, Trinidadian Deep, Blaktroniks, Xaphryn Follicle, Dozie and Mattski to put out the labels first compilation. The first impression? It’s an fantastic compilation, has a very black feeling to it, and it keeps reminding me a lot of Volcov’s Soul in Motion from 2002. It fuses the sounds of Detroit (think Drexciya, Titonton Duvanté or Waajeed) with the darker parts West London (think Nu Era, Domu or Nubian Mindz). Did I mention it’s an fantastic compilation?
