There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed
With a word, she can get what she came for

wow. that was a trip. I will say though all you people whining that she "ruined" it wouldn't be saying that if you'd never heard the original. very much Dolly!

    1. Dolly slays this tune. If she wants to play with ending that's up to her. Wonderful bluegrass-cum-gospel re-envisioning of a song that everyone could hum in their REM cycle. She makes it sound authentic and searching. 2. Robert PLant signed off on this- lauding her cover. And I don't hear Mr's Page or JP Jones bitching either. 3... people are giving Dolly shit for covering a Zeppelin tune? Zeppelin? The same bunch of guys whose first two albums are (from Babe I;m gonna leave you to massive portions of Lemon Song and damn near everything between) replete with "covers," read: more recycled blues licks and lyrics- most torn bloodily from their context- than most could shake a leg at. Seriously. These guy get carte blanche to regurgitate every Johnson lick from Lonnie to Robert to Tommy to Blind Willie, every James riff from Elmore to Skip- and no one batts an eye. Dolly Parton tweaks one tune and every stoner-fuckwad-limpdick-Zeppelin-puritan wants to shred her. Figures.

I like it. But when I was 16, I'd have reacted like Oppressotron. Do you know the Frank Zappa version? http://www.last.fm/music/Frank+Zappa/_/Stairway+to+Heaven or http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=2qs-MJMZ-G4&feature=related

She gives it an interesting new shading with her melancholy bluegrass interpretation

Oh the mean reception makes me sad:( I think it's wonderfully done and judging by what Robert Plant has been doing lately, I'm pretty sure he'd love it too.

Actually this seems to be par for the course. Really, I type in “Bluegrass” for the tags, play the song selection and get a bluegrass cover of “War Pigs” and “Whole Lotta Rosie” so why not “Stairway”. Then again, having one of the greatest songs penned in the last century with its end butchered gives me shivers. If I had heard this when I was 16-17 I would have been tossing Molotov Cocktails at my PC and dousing my self in petrol though.

No, I love it. It's just...really interesting to have a satanic song being covered and changed from this hard rock pioneer to a bluegrass/country thing.

Am I alone in really liking this? Two good things, country music and Led Zeppelin, coming together... what could be better?!
