This is likely to be amongst our last journals for this year, but rest assured, despite the all-pervading gloom elsewhere, 2009 is set to be a vintage year for Freshly Squeezed. As well as the long-awaited new album from The Voodoo Trombone Quartet we have the most incredible line-up of music both new and old. Look out for Eclectrik 2 – our award-winning sampler becomes a series – quality albums from Dodo and Stereo De Luxe. The discovery of previously unreleased ‘Lost Tapes’ by Don Air and some very, very exciting new projects including a return to our club-land roots...

  • Dodo - The Anroid's Dream EP

    Nov 19 2007, 14h56 por JustJuice

The Android’s Dream EP is a re-mastered, re-packaged and re-issued collection of 3 of the best tunes from Dodo’s debut album, The Android’s Dream. Released in 1999 on cult German label Crippled Dick Hot Wax (more usually home to vinyl soundtrack re-issues like the infamous Vampiros Lesbos!) this is the first time the music has been made available for download.

DODO’s original album proved to be way ahead of its time and in many ways sounds better, and more relevant today than it ever did. TocarSunlight On Mars marries a sophisticated homage to 50’s sci-fi (think FORBIDDEN PLANET) with elements of experimental analogue electronica (Dodo also collects old keyboards) while TocarCleopatra's Needle melds haunting classical samples with exotica and TocarIridium completes the package. This is hand crafted electronica and as such really needs to be heard several times to fully reveal its ambient magic.

The Electric Love EP has more recently given a glimpse of what's in store on her forthcoming new album from Freshly Squeezed Music. Title track TocarElectric Love itself is perhaps more immediate than her earlier work and is also the lead track from the new Freshly Squeezed compilation Eclectrik. It’s a left-field electro-pop gem with a hooky chorus and a retro vibe, great lyrics and an almost blues-like sample. It was described by properlychilled.com as “amazing… a minimal 80s aesthetic in an old school Human League style… [with] vocals that just make this soar in an altogether disarmingly alluring way.”

The b-side weights in with a tripped-out dubby instrumental – TocarNuclear Mustard - imagine John Barry’s Persuaders Theme remixed by King Tubby! While the download EP also includes an extra taster of what to expect on the new album in the shape of TocarBig Eyebrow – a cinematic downtempo waltz reminiscent of cold-war spy films with fur-hatted heroines!

The new album will be available in 2008.

  • ECLECTRIK

    Set 11 2007, 11h17 por JustJuice

The Eclectrik compilation has been described as the soundtrack to a dirty weekend in a decadent boutique hotel by the sea!

It offers a taste of the Brighton label's genre-busting mix of “future cult classics” (The Independent). From the The LoversJarvis Cocker penned TocarLa Degustation, through the late-night electro of Product.01 (whose TocarHot Trap – included here - went Top Ten on MTV Dance) to the organic ska meets breakbeat of The Voodoo Trombone Quartet (whose previous single almost blew their cult credentials by skimming the edges of the official UK download charts) - the compilation aims to define the sound and ethos of the label by bringing together releases both past, present and future. It even includes a few that ‘got away’.

Although many of these records willfully slipped beneath the mainstream radar, there are songs here like, for instance, Sonido Total from Barcelona’s acclaimed The Pinker Tones that may be more familiar as one of at least six tracks in the TV series Ugly Betty. This sits alongside exclusive new material such as Lodekka’s TocarYes Mr. B and TocarElectric Love by Dodo (which will also be available as a 7” single to tie in with the album.)

A seamlessly smooth, slinky, sexy and seductive selection of downtempo electronica, contemporary exotica and eccentric pop.

Full of lounging dance-floor killers that ad-men will weep to hear... Enough effortless cool to grace a TV-ad soundtrack very, very soon. http://ldn.flavorpill.net/current/

12 very fine compositions that have, in their own separate ways,
booked into the anti mainstream hotel... Get this or get thinking

Eclectrik is cheeky and its sexy. There is such a variety of styles at play it seems impossible that they all blend as nicely as they do. Eclectrik calls for nothing but respect for what everyone at Freshly Squeezed is up to right now.

Its easy to see why big corporations and the movie and TV industry love them so... this is most certainly one to pick up, and if you work in the AD business then it wouldnt hurt to get a copy on expenses now would it?
