It was a long time ago when I first started listening to "extreme metal". I think a friend recommended them.

I think it was a song off The Black Waltz, but I didn't like it. I didn't start liking them until I heard Swamplord way later.

Hard one, but I'm probably going to have to go with Av Norrøn Ætt, but the two previous ones are excellent as well

Well I have to say Heathen Foray but there are alot of underrated Falkenbach songs as well.

Hardly. Gorgoroth aren't known for having sappy songs, I'll tell you that.

Now this is a hard one. I'm torn between Like An Everflowing Stream, Indecent And Obscene and Dismember.

I think that Victorious March is their best, but really anything off Once Sent From the Golden Hall could qualify.

That would be Ring of Gold, because it is quite beautiful. R.I.P Quorthon

By the Sword of My Father, no contest.

There are some really good ones from the early days. I'm thinking either Starforsaken, Behind Space or Biosphere.

13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? At the Gates

The first time I heard them and specifically the compilation Suicidal Final Art when I was just getting into melodeath, I sat spellbound throughout the first part (songs from the first two full lengths).

March of the Fire Ants. The only song I know about an invasive species hah!

Well there are a few songs that have funny lyrics. That's When I Became a Satanist always brings a smile to my face. And while we're on the environmental topic, When it Hits Home is fucking righteous!

I wish I could have.

I youtube'd them and found the official video for Regin Smiður and I was hooked.

There are two albums I would rate 100%, The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane R.I.P Jon.

Well it would have to be Mikael Stanne now, wouldn't it? It was awesome hanging with him at the Dismember show i Gothenburg. \m/

Have they ever even played live? I think they might have a few times in their early career, when I was like 4, so no.

21. What is a good memory involving 21? Soilwork

That would be when I met them after the concert in Florida and hung out with them for two hours in their tour bus. Björn kan make one hell of a Margherita! Although truth be told I don't listen to them very much any more, only their old stuff is worthwile imo.

Hard choise here, but Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet is certainly a good candidate. R.I.P Valfar!

March of the Grey Company wins this one, although Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame is prob my favorite Summoning album as a whole.

Behold Judas no doubt, I really liked Hate Eternal intensively a while and then I had enough.

Ahh, jeez. There's hardly one song that overtakes all the others. But I guess the longer their songs are the more greatness they contain. Therefore this one is a tie between Større Enn Tid - Tyngre Enn Natt and 793 (Slaget om Lindisfarne)

Skogens hämnd probably, but I haven't listened to them in a while. Runners up are Slaget vid blodsälv, Grottans Barn, Asfågelns Död... solid band overall.

Never unfortunately, although their songs are so long it might be kind of odd in concert like when I saw Opeth, pretty short list of songs they have time to play.

Haha yes there is! Happy Little Boozer probably most so, but any of their drinking song are fun.

This is a hard one. All the full lengths are awesome, maybe Hordalands doedskvad has the edge over the others though.

I don't care much for either City or Alien albumwize so probably a song off of one of them.

Unknown, first time I heard them I didn't like them and thus didn't remember what song I heard. But when I heard their newer stuff I started to like them alot. Vargstenen!

The Frail absolutely. They're all very good though, just that every song on The Frail is incredible.

Again, another artist I've never even heard of touring. Probably hasn't and as such, no. Besides, I really only like Ravendusk in My Heart...

Black Earth, which coincidentally is the best album even though that song is not on it.

Ouch, this is hard. I've got five favorites! Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life and Black Water Park. I guess I have to go with the first one.

First time I listened through Leben heisst Sterben, quite a headbanger of an album imo.

I really like the new one (A Taste Of Extreme Divinity) alot, and also Virus. But I think The Final Chapter might still take the prize here.

Don't really have a favorite member, actually I don't even know what they're doing in my top 50. For all tid and Stormblåst are good albums though.

49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? Hatesphere

Murderous Intent. The Killing EP is my first and favorite release of them.

50. How many albums do you have by 20? Scar Symmetry

All of them, but I have yet to listen to the new one.

10. Megadeth's Endgame
While not my favorite Megadeth album, Endgame is miles better than I thought they (Dave) could achieve at this point. The riffs are original and the solos are pretty nice, surprisingly.

9. Diabolical Masquerade's Nightwork
This band kind of started me on metal, oddly, and this album remains to be one of my favorite black metal releases. It's eerie with wonderful keys. I especially recommend this to fans of avant garde bm bands like Sigh.

8. Diablo Swing Orchestra's The Butcher's Ballroom
Most fans of experimental metal are probably familiar with DSO and their operatic swing metal or whatever, but if you're not, definitely check them out.

7. Mirrorthrone's Carriers of Dust
Another stunning extreme avant-garde release from my favorite Cochet project.

6. Almora's Kalihora's Song
Almora is one of the best known Turkish symphonic metal bands who sound similar to Haggard but with clean vocals and more metal and folk influences. I have been a fan of Haggard for a while, but Almora is starting to surpass them for me especially with this album. It's awesome.


5. Disillusion's Back To Times of Splendor
This is possibly my favorite progressive album ever. Seriously, it's just perfect, and I don't know what else to say. Dream Theater wishes they sounded like this.

4. Tiamat's Wildhoney
I am pretty convinced that this is one of the best albums of all time. It's atmospheric doom metal, a complete work of art.

3. Dark Moor's The Gates of Oblivion
This is my favorite power metal album ever.. the orchestral and metal and vocal quality is all stunning and work extremely well together. Elisa Martin is fucking bad ass, and I don't know why she had to leave because Dark Moor sucks without her :( Anyway, ballsy power metal, yesh.

2. Tristania's Beyond the Veil
One of the better female-fronted gothic doom bands out there for me. This album is also lovely in every way, my favorite of Tristania by far.

1. Xystus's Equilibrio
You want a perfect metal opera? Yea, most people haven't heard of Xystus, but this album is just so good and pretty it's ridiculous. The orchestra...oh shit. For fans of Epica, Simone does a part excellently. The whole thing was actually performed sort of like a musical and recorded. It took a year of work but became a far better opera than anything I have ever heard from Rhapsody or Avantasia. I even prefer this to Ayreon. Insane.

Każdy, komu ekstremalne brzmienia są obce już na wstępie może skończyć czytanie tej recenzji. Tak samo ktoś kto nie trawi black czy thrash metalu - już może sobie odpuścić i dalej nie czytać. Bo jeśli denerwuje was walenie w bębny z prędkością światła i rozgrzewanie strun od gitary do czerwoności to Absu na pewno wam się nie spodoba.

No dobra, każdemu, kto miał jakąś styczność z ostrym nawalaniem zespół ten gdzieś mógł się obić o uszy, bo rzeczywiście - jest chyba jednym z bardziej znanych amerykańskich tworów, które opierają swoją muzykę na tempie pędzącego geparda. I nie przypadkowo używam takiego określenia, bo jak dla mnie muzyka Absu to jedna z najbardziej drapieżnych i krwiożerczych odmian black metalu. Niektórzy mówią death metalu, inni thrash metalu, ale jak dla mnie Absu najbliżej jednak do grania czarnego jak smoła metalu.

Album "Tara" wydany został w 2001 roku nakładem niezależnej francuskiej wytwórni Osmose Productions. Niewielu osobom nazwa ta cokolwiek mówi, a szkoda, bo poszukałem troszkę w sieci na temat tej wytwórni i ku memu zaskoczeniu okazała się ona wylęgarnią wielu znanych zespołów. Choćby taki Samael czy Marduk, nie mówiąc już o kilku mniej znanych: Enslaved, Immortal czy Diabolical Masquerade. Istna fabryka black metalowych gwiazd, no cóż, z Osmose wiele zespołów przejmuje Nuclear Blast, Century Media czy Metal Blade - a to już poważne metalowe firmy.

Ale nie będziemy rozważać na temat metalowych wytwórni płytowych tylko o albumie "Tara". Wyobraźcie sobie, że wrzucacie do miksera kamienie, zamykacie go i włączacie na przeszło 50 minut. Wyobraźcie sobie jak brzmieć musi to mielenie kamieni. I co teraz myślicie? Owszem, wiele płyt z ekstremalną muzyką może tak brzmieć, ale nie ten album. Jak więc on brzmi?

Absu serwuje nam prawie godzinną podróż po świecie mitologicznych tekstów z przygrywającą z prędkością światła sekcją instrumentalną. Ale niech mnie piorun strzeli jeśli gdzieś już słyszałem tak świetnie pracujące gitary i perkusję. Instrumentalne fragmenty naprawdę robią na mnie wrażenie. Wiertarka na spółkę z wirującą pralką to nic - mówię wam. Prawdziwy hałas znajdziecie tutaj. Mimo wszystko jest w tym coś intrygującego, prawdziwego, zadziornego i złowieszczego. Na pierwszy rzut ucha można odnieść wrażenie, że to nic poza bezsensownym ładowaniem niespożytych sił w instrumenty. Ale tak nie jest, radzę się wsłuchać w poszczególne partie, i wyłapać wszelkie te przejścia, zagrywki, ozdobniki. Black metalowa poezja jak dla mnie - a nigdy nie byłem fanem takiego grania. Aha, i zapomniałbym: jeśli dobrze widziałem na teledysku to za wokale odpowiada... perkusista! No cóż, jeśli to faktycznie wszystko zostało nagrane równocześnie (myślę o tym, że śpiewał i grał na bębnach) to naprawdę wielkie ukłony dla tego pana.

Kilka słów na temat utworów. Wszystko opatrzone jest klamrą pod tytułem "Tara". Pierwszy utwór tak się właśnie nazywa i jest to instrumentalne jakieś tam szumienie, takie intro - jakich wiele. Nic szczególnego. Ale następny kawałek "Pillars of Mercy" to prawdziwe wiercenie w głowie. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje powtarzający się motyw w drugiej części utworu - nie przypominam sobie tak fajnego momentu na perkusji. Kolejne utwory to już czysta nawalanka, z lekkim zwolnieniem na początku "Manannan", które rozpoczyna znów jakieś złowieszcze szumienie. A dalej już standardowo. Swoją drogą wspomniany "Manannan" ma bardzo ciekawy teledysk, który mnie nieco bawi, ale oczywiście jest to tru-metalowa, mroczna kapela (szkoda tylko, że koleś ma srebrną twarz...?). Ale to możemy panom z Dallas wybaczyć. Trudno oprócz tego wybrać dobry utwór, bo reszta kawałków prezentuje dokładnie ten sam - bardzo dobry poziom. Żaden utwór nie wychodzi na czoło, co wg mnie jest ogromnym plusem dla całego albumu, bo zachęca to do posłuchania go w całości. No, na szczególną uwagę zasługuje jednak "Stone of Destiny (....for Magh Slecht and Ard Righ)". Utwór jest stonowany, nie tak szalony i drapieżny jak poprzednie, za wokale odpowiada ktoś inny - co słychać (niestety nie znalazłem owej osoby personaliów). Dodatkowo jest tutaj naprawdę pełna garść muzycznych pomysłów na zmiany tempa, melodie, pojawiają się nawet klawisze! Ale szczególnych instrumentów na albumie jest więcej, posłuchajcie, to znajdziecie nawet szkockie dudy.

No więc czas skończyć to lanie wody. Cóż, bardzo trudno było mi napisać recenzję do takiego albumu (co pewnie po niej widać - zero profesjonalizmu), a to dlatego, że nie słucham takiej muzyki wiele i brak mi porównań, doświadczenia, nie znam się. Zwał jak zwał, ale naprawdę uwielbiam "Tara". Album świetnie brzmi, jest bardzo fajnie ułożony i nagrany, a do tego strasznie podoba mi się na nim perkusja.
