Os Department of Eagles começaram em 2000, com o feliz acaso de Fred Nicolaus e Daniel Rossen terem de partilhar um quarto na New York University. Como forma de entretenimento, juntavam samples e tornavam-nos em canções novas, com a ajuda de software pirata e um microfone emprestado. Por esta altura, ainda respondiam por Whitey on the Moon UK, que depois mudariam, ao descobrir uma banda californiana com igual nome. Acidentalmente descobertos por uma editora californiana, editaram “The Cold Nose” em 2003. Rossen integraria, logo depois, os Grizzly Bear (junto com o dono do microfone emprestado, Chris Taylor) e só em 2007 se voltaria a reunir com Nicolaus para trabalhar no material que vinham reunindo - recrutaram dois membros dos Grizzly, Taylor e Chris Bear e ainda Nat Baldwin: “In Ear Park” sairia em 2008. Dele, o New York Times diria: “pop graciosa, surreal e introspectiva que junta uma tristeza crua a um encantamento elaborado e circense”.

well it would sound like Grizzly Bear because Daniel Rossen is in it. and considering he's a major song writer and part of Grizzly Bear. there are very strong differences between the two after a lot of listens.
