    Dez 9 2009, 14h11 por mrshake

It takes a special breed of person to make end-of-year top ten lists of a given category. I don't mean "special" as in exemplary, or somehow a cut above. Interestingly, though, that demographic dovetails nicely with the type of person who might think that their ranting and hyperbole might be interesting to the whole wide internet. So here's a list of Mike's Choices for the top ten records of the year. The year might not be over, but unless the Young Jeezy record or Rod Stewart albums is going to BLOW MY MIND, I'm going to call it. These are ranked, largely, by how much enjoyment I got out of them, how much I liked them. Not terribly empirical, but it seems to work for me.

    1. The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love
Huge without being silly, atmospheric without being limpid, it's just booming, thundering neo-shoegazer of the finest variety. Maybe not the best record of the year on a technical scale, but I've listened to and enjoyed this album more than any other this year, and it only came out in September. Bits of everything from My Bloody Valentine to The Jesus and Mary Chain are folded into the mix, but without ever really sounding specifically derivative. I heard the "Velvet" single and had to go out that day to get the single, just to have a real physical copy of it. It's that good, and there is no hesitation in me naming this my favorite album of the year.

    2. The Vandelles - Del Black Aloha
Coming from out of a buzz-less nowhere with their debut EP, they followed up with a full-length that did everything you would want a first album to do after a killer EP... more of the same, but deeper. Sonically, it's halfway between some wicked surf band we've never heard of and a blast of feedback like a bucket of cold water in the face. Once again, Jesus And Mary Chain comparisons aren't inaccurate, but it's more than just sounding like a good band that makes this a great record. Thrilling sonics, oceanic reverbs, swaggering hooks... it's got what a good rock record needs to have.

    3. Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
With some of the more jagged edges sanded down from the unexpectedly amazing Beyond, what we have here is an imminently satisfying collection of wistful melodies and extended soloing. If you like Dinosaur Jr., you'll love this record... but if you don't like the band, this album might just win you over anyway. Barlow's rumbling bass guitar and Murph's furious tom rolls build a structure to hold up swirling, winding, neo-psychedelic explorations wrung from Mascis' Jazzmaster. It's impressive that any band could make a record this good, much less one that broke up less-than-amicably 20 years ago.

    4. Early Day Miners - The Treatment
Not so much the sound of a band changing... more like snapping into focus. After several albums of hovering, beautifully longing soundscapes, tunes that felt like memories, a sharpening of hooks and shortening of tunes makes this feel like a new band. Post-punk seems like a touchstone, but it's hard to put my finger on just what this sounds like. Danceable rhythms, mercurical guitar lines, and hooks. Lots of hooks. A surprise? Maybe. A delight? For sure.

    5. A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head
Having been angry that I slept on their self-titled first album, I was thrilled to hear about this follow up. Where the first album was a collection of recordings cobbled into an album release, this is the first one recorded as an album. What does this mean? Sonic cohesion. Every one of these static and reverb epics flows into each other, sounding like a monolithic call to feedback arms. Again, it's a good year to be a shoegazer.

    6. The Dead Weather - Horehound
I'm no great champion of The Kills, singer Alison Mosshart's main gig, but I've got no beef with them. I'm on record as being a Jack White fan. So what's the deal with this ill-recieved project? Voodoo blues. Dark, oozing, psychedelic evil grooves. And it's fantastic. I do like the White-sung tracks a little better, but there's not a truly weak track on this. People didn't like it because it didn't sound like The White Stripes. So what? This is way more Captain Beefheart's The Mirror Man Sessions than B.B. King. If you wrote it off, try it again. If you haven't heard it, now's the time.

    7. Sune Rose Wagner - Sune Rose Wagner
It doesn't sound like a Raveonettes album, but it couldn't have been made by anyone who wasn't in The Raveonettes. Gossamer, drifting, dreamy - I hate to fly, and this record put me at ease from Cleveland to Boston. All the Spector-esque arrangements you've come to love, but like Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind is sounds like it's being recorded by ghosts. It's beautiful, and the fact that it's all sung in Danish makes it even more ethereal. Forget the Cocteau Twins, this is what dream-pop should sound like.

    8. Varsity Drag - Rock'n'Roll Is Such A Hassle : Live In Europe
Ben Deily left the Lemonheads in '89, put out a record with his new band, Pods, in 1994, then disappeared to have a real life until '06, when Varsity Drag debuted on record. This career-overview live disc shows that while he hasn't been prolific, Deily has certainly been consistently excellent. Everything from early L-heads songs up through 2009 material, it's a fantastic collection for anyone who likes good punky rock songs. Considering how good these songs are, I don't think I need to sell it any further.

    9. The Raveonettes - In And Out Of Control
I've never considered them one of my favorite bands, but it seems like every year The Raveonettes release a record, it makes my top ten list. This year's is no different, in that it's completely satisfying, sounds wonderful, and has good songs. I just can't get enough of their surf/spy guitars and cooing backup vocals. Last year's Lust, Lust, Lust was a comeback of sorts for a band that never went away - it was just a lean, dark rock record. If you have liked almost anything on this list, you'll like this record. I guarantee it* (*this is in no way a guarantee).

    10. The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
This is the later edit that I knew would be inevitable. I had left this one off the big list of candidates. I didn't know they still had it in them. The trippiest, freakiest, most acid-drenched head record of the year. Totally deserving of the list

    --------------------------------------
    psst... is everyone gone?

Also-Rans: This was too good a year for music to constrain it to the top 10. There were several excellent records this year that just barely didn't make the cut, but deserve one more largely-unread blog to sing their praises.

of the metro - "April Is The Cruelest Month/Roboboogie": honestly, there would have been a place for this at the grown-up table if it had been more than 2 tracks. It was a best albums list, but this is only down here because of a technicality. What does it sound like? Electronic music that sounds HUMAN. That should be all you need to know. www.myspace.com/inastationofthemetro

Asobi Seksu - Hush: More dream-pop than shoegazer, it shows that you can strip huge things down, and if they're really good, they'll stand up. This does, and it's beautiful.

Death - ...For the Whole World To See: pre-punk, Motor City Dirtbombs-esque garage'n'roll that proves that obsessive record collectors deserve to be listened to from time to time.

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown:
Far better than I expected. It's nice to hear a band that I know are honest about doing what's good about big, huge, old-fashioned rock music. It doesn't feel ironic, it doesn't feel put-on, and it's not smarmy like some of the other epically huge bands of the day.

Madlib - Beat Konducta, Vol. 5-6: Hazy hip hop fragments from the underground's best (I said it) producer.

Sonic Youth - The Eternal: solid, tight experiments from the kings and queen of avant-alterna-rock. Fantastic.

Metric - Fantasies: Haunted, danceable modern pop. It SOUNDS perfect, and probably would if it sounded different, too.

Mos Def - The Ecstatic: Not enough hip-hop on my proper list, but not for want of trying. After being written off for a couple of albums, Mos Def comes roaring back with his best since his debut.

Spinnerette - Spinnerette: Hard-edged Rock that shows that Brody Dalle is a lot more than a punk screamer. Almost made number 10 up there.

  • 40 Questions About Your Top 50

    Dez 3 2009, 0h01 por NH3Maser

Disclaimer: my top 50 don't really reflect my current taste in music all that well. I'm working on changing that.

    1. How did you get into 31?
In Flames. I was looking for a good metal instrumental, and someone recommended TocarMan Made God.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Ah, Cynic's Veil of Maya. This may be my favorite album opener of all time.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29?
"Bow to the savior of the fearful and desperate / Shepherd of deception / Prophet of infection / Behold the Xenochrist!". Awesome outro. The Faceless were the ones who convinced me that Deathcore wasn't all shit.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
No contest, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The first hip-hop album I ever liked.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Mastodon. All five of their full-lengths. I also bough the ATHF movie soundtrack just for Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Demons and Wizards. Probably Fiddler On The Green.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
I'm pretty sure that there's a Beatles song for every emotion. I'll go with Julia.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?
Tough one, because The Doors have a lot of amazing tracks, but I'll say TocarThe Unknown Soldier.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Kalmah is another tough one. Doubtful About It All, maybe?

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, of course. Off the top of my head, TocarAngel.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Definitely Caught Somewhere in Time. Where Iron Maiden peaked in my opinion.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Ensiferum. Has to be TocarInto Battle. The guitar solo... rock.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
Explosions in the Sky. Too many to count, mostly involving psychedelics.

    14. What is your favorite song by 37?
Radiohead. Surprisingly, I guess it's TocarMeeting In The Aisle, a random instrumental B-side off of some EP.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Fuck yeah Necrophagist. TocarTo Breathe in a Casket always makes me glad that I'm not currently buried alive, I guess.

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live?
Lamb of God - just once, in LA. Not that great a show.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Nirvana. Almost certainly TocarSmells Like Teen Spirit.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Death? The obvious answer, Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.).

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Nope, never seen Joe Satriani.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45?
Sir Mix-A-Lot? Well, this is embarrassing. The time the Pitt band played TocarJump on It at halftime at some football game, maybe? (This is one of the artists covered in the above disclaimer, by the way.)

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Metallica. Easily The Call of Ktulu.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
Black Sabbath. Dunno, likely TocarIron Man.

    24. What is your favorite album by 21?
Not much of a selection as far as Dethklok albums go. I liked Dethalbum II better than the first one.

    25. What is your favorite song by 18?
    Pixies. Hmm... I Bleed.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
Guns N' Roses. First I can remember is TocarWelcome To The Jungle.

    27. What is your favorite lyric by 3?

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
Sublime. A lot of great songs, but I'll go with TocarBoss D.J..

Slayer. I think it was TocarAngel of Death, which I still regard as their best song.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
Wow, this is a tough choice for Led Zeppelin. I have to say Nobody's Fault But Mine, but this is very very close.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
I have no idea what OutKast is doing in this position. Never.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Yep, nearly all of Tenacious D's songs will do the trick. TocarDouble Team always cracks me up.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
    God Dethroned. Easily Bloody Blasphemy.

    34. What is the worst song by 46?
Where to start with Styx? I used to like TocarMr. Roboto, but all it does now is raise my urge to kill.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    Elvis. Hound Dog, I guess?

    36. What is your favorite album by 42?
Immortal Technique. Revolutionary Vol. 2 is amazing.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
    Jay-Z, never.

    38. What is your favorite album by 36?
Also a pretty sparse selection for Gorillaz. Between the two, I'll say Demon Days.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
The Who. This is unusual, but the first one I can remember is TocarChristmas.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
Queen, A Night At The Opera.

  • Lifetime of albums

    Dez 2 2009, 1h54 por NH3Maser

What I consider to be the best album released each year, starting from 1987 (my birth year). I forgot where I got this idea from.

1987: Scream Bloody Gore by Death
    1988: Leprosy by Death
    1989: Doolittle by Pixies
1990: Rust in Peace by Megadeth
    1991: Human by Death
1992: The IVth Crusade by Bolt Thrower
    1993: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu-Tang Clan
    1994: Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone
    1995: Symbolic by Death
    1996: Sublime by Sublime
1997: Something Wild by Children of Bodom
1998: The Sound of Perseverance by Death
1999: Bloody Blasphemy by God Dethroned
    2000: Elvenfris by Lykathea Aflame
    2001: Ensiferum by Ensiferum
2002: They Will Return by Kalmah
2003: Revolutionary Vol. 2 by Immortal Technique
    2004: Wintersun by Wintersun
    2005: Řád a trest by !T.O.O.H.!
    2006: Leading Vision by Gorod
2007: Colors by Between the Buried and Me
2008: In Hatred's Flame by Exmortus
2009: ...A Splendid Chaos by Coram Lethe

So what does this say about my taste in music? My favorite artist Death got top billing for four of their six releases, which is no real surprise (although they just narrowly edged out Gorguts in '98). Besides the past couple of years, for which my opinions are still solidifying, the hardest choices were in 1993 (the other contenders were Atheist, Death, and Pestilence) and 2004 (which had releases by Deathspell Omega, Disillusion, Ensiferum, The Fiery Furnaces, Mastodon, and Necrophagist. Whew!).

So I decided to reset my charts... again (after about 23,000 scrobbles). Here are my top artists and albums from early January up until late November. It seems I can't go more than 25k scrobbles without resetting... I would probably have over 100,000 scrobbles if I never reset my charts (combined with my scrobbles from my old account).
