    Dez 21 2009, 19h37 por yusakuasano

Fri 18 Dec – Red Snapper, Broken Tempo

Να λοιπόν και η τελευταία συναυλία της χρονιάς! Μιας χρονιάς που προσωπικά πέρασα πραγματικά μαγικές συναυλιακές στιγμές. Τι να πρωτοπιάσω; 2L8, Dirty Granny Tales, Firewater,Loreena McKennitt, The Tiger Lillies, Faith No More την άνοιξη και το καλοκαίρι; Murder by Death, Levellers, Yann Tiersen, Woven Hand, Kultur Shock, Madeleine Peyroux και Gogol Bordello φέτος το φθινόπωρο; Αξέχαστη συναυλιακή χρονιά και μακράν η καλύτερη μου.

    Και μετά… οι Red Snapper. Που σημαίνει 4 άτομα. Ντραμς, ηλεκτρική κιθάρα, (όρθιο) μπάσο, και σαξόφωνο/κλαρίνο (;). Έχει νόημα που τα αναφέρω αυτά. Γιατί για πρώτη φορά σε live ένοιωσα τα όργανα σαν ολότητες και αυτόνομες προσωπικότητες μέσα σε μια σύνθεση. Και ναι! Είδα να εκτελούνται πραγματικά φανταστικές συνθέσεις. Οι Red Snapper είναι προφανώς τέλειοι γνώστες και βιρτουόζοι των οργάνων τους. Καταπληκτικός ήχος, περίτεχνο παίξιμο χωρίς να γίνεται κουραστικό και …όγκος!! 4 άτομα βρε παιδί μου να παίζουν και να γεμίζει το principal σα να παίζανε 14! Και όχι μόνο το γεμίζανε με νότες, αλλά μεταδίδανε και τη μεγάλη ενέργεια που είχε η μουσική τους αλλά και αυτοί οι ίδιοι! Η ενέργεια με τη σειρά της μετατρεπόταν σε κέφι , το κέφι σε χορό και στο τέλος είχε καμιά 400αρια άτομα θέλοντας και μη να κουνιούνται στους groovy ρυθμούς τους. Αυτοί και οι Death in Vegas μου το κατάφεραν αυτό: να μου επιβάλουν με τη μουσική τους να χορεύω με το ζόρι. Τι άλλο θέλει δηλαδή κάποιος από μια συναυλία;

    Βαθμολογία:
    8,5/10

  • Jakeone - Stingrays EP - Now Available For Download!

    About

Jakeone, half of Process's first album act Toob, first discovered a love of electronic dance music as a young teenager stumbling around the early 90s free rave scene. Captivated by the energy of Detroit's deep bleeps meeting raucous London breaks and balls-out hardcore techno, he soon started playing the odd record at dirty basement parties and piecing beats together on a cranky old Emu Emax sampler.

The first proper break came landing a job at London's Orinoco Studios working with likes of The Chemical Brothers, Death in Vegas and more importantly the seminal, Warp-signed "fuck-off jazz" band Red Snapper. Jakeone's flair for improvising with machines found a musical ally in Snapper drummer Rich Thair, who asked him to come on board and provide a harder, more electronic edge to the band's already formidable set-up.

At the same time he was cutting his teeth as a solo performer - DJing and playing live techno and electro at London's now infamous Wang parties alongside a lot of electronic music's heavy-hitters including Radioactive Man, Plaid, Mark Broom and Andrew Weatherall. He remains a regular and crowd favourite at their nights, and many key techno acts like Dave Clarke, Laurent Garnier, Billy Nasty and Will Saul are fans of Jake's now defunct label Flameboy - an output for "off-kilter, bastardized club music" by himself as well as like-minded individuals such as Shirker, Radioactive Man, Si Begg and Vicious Pink Goo.

Meanwhile, Jakeone and Rich formed Toob, whose last album, Push Me, Pull You was arguably one of 2008's most criminally over-looked releases. Except by the critics, with Bleep.com calling it the "best leftfield pop album of 2008" and DJ mag called it "one of the best electronic dance albums of the year". Even rocker bible Q named it as 2008's "most ambitious dance album". Now also part of what Process calls its "house band" of weirdy remixers, Jake has a set of new remixes and tracks coming in 2009/2010 - alongside this, his first solo EP on the label.

    100
    Girls Against Boys
    Kill the Sexplayer
    Cruise Yourself
    1994

Remarkably one of two bands in todays forty that have two bassists, never a common setup in alternative rock, never mind any other genre. GVSB are one of my favourite bands and have been for many years, despite a now long period of inactivity other than occasional gigs. This single - their commercial breakthrough, really - was featured on the Clerks soundtrack, and it's deep-down-and-dirty grooves are a good representation of where GVSB were at the time. They flirted with electronics and major labels subsequently, but this track comes from the middle of a golden period where the band frankly didn't put a note wrong for three albums.

    99
    Nine Inch Nails
    TocarSomewhat Damaged
    The Fragile
    1999

The awesome opening track from one of the most self-indulgent, overblown albums I've ever heard (really, this album would have benefitted from being cut down to a single CD - although it would have been some of the vocal tracks I'd cut), this is cleverly built to add one layer at a time before exploding into a trademark freakout for the close. An impressive track live nowadays, too...

    98
    Pearl Jam
    TocarJeremy
    Ten
    1992

Still a shocking, powerful song even now, this is a rare example of a video adding to an already astonishing track. Everything about this track has a sense of foreboding, right from the bassline that opens the track, and the lyrics do a great job of giving you an idea of what is going on, but not the whole story, wrapping parts of it in metaphors ("Jeremy spoke in class today") which the video makes explicit at the very end. By a long chalk (in my view) PJ's finest moment, and making an eloquent statement on an issue that was to become rather too common in the media in the following decade or two.

    97
    Spahn Ranch
    TocarLocusts
    The Coiled One
    1995

Let's be honest - in industrial circles, it seems you either love Spahn Ranch or you really, really don't. I can see how their later stuff, featuring much more in the way of dub and house influences, not to mention some other unexpected directions, could be divisive, but I always thought that The Coiled One was an album that had a slightly wider appeal. Even so, it was chock full of sampled, cyclic guitar riffs, strange-sounding beats that were almost-live-drums-but-not-quite, and then Athan Maroulis' warm but detached vocals. All of these come together to amazing effect for this track (side note: I'd never even known of the existence of this video until writing this...)

    96
    Rob Zombie
    TocarLiving Dead Girl
    Hellbilly Deluxe
    1998

Now an astonishing eleven years old, this track - like all of Zombie's best - hasn't dated a minute. With it's old horror B-movie samples, slinky, bass-heavy prowl, anthemic chorus - not to mention the bonkers video based on The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari - how was this ever going to fail?

    95
    The Levellers
    Liberty Song
    Levelling the Land
    1991

I was a big Levellers fan in the 90s. No, I didn't have dreadlocks, or a dog on a string, but I did have an appreciation of a nakedly political band who had a good line in folkish-rock. I've seen them live a few times - they have always been an awesome live band - and this rabble-rousing call-to-arms is one of their greatest live tracks and a big fan favourite, even after all these years. Another that I didn't know had a video, too…

    94
    The Prodigy
    Their Law
    Music for the Jilted Generation
    1994

Talking of protest, this album was a huge statement against the Criminal Justice Act of 1994, and it's most obvious statement was this rocking collaboration with Pop Will Eat Itself: "Fuck 'em and their law". Hulking great beats Prodigy-style, and vocals and guitars PWEI-style. A meeting of minds that worked so well it's amazing it wasn't done again...

    93
    Radiator
    Who Is Your God
    Radiator
    1998

Another of those bands who had a fleeting glimpse of "fame" and vanished, Radiator were an intriguing electronic/industrial-rock band who only ever made one album (I understand they were another band to suffer from the rash of major label rationalisation at the end of the decade). The album was good, but it was the final, climactic track that was the pick - a steadily build-up, exploding into a techno-metal dancefloor monster, before reaching even greater heights as the song stampedes through just four frantic minutes.

    92
    Tindersticks
    Can We Start Again?
    Simple Pleasure
    1999

Tindersticks' jazzy, bluesy music is meant for the darkness, for smoky rooms where people go to escape from life…and as such, are perhaps not quite loved as much as they should be. For this album, they introduced a soulful influence that produced this extraordinarily tender single, with Stuart Staples' baritone vocals the utterly perfect match.

    91
    Will Haven
    I've Seen My Fate
    El Diablo
    1997

An absolutely fearsome live band back when they first appeared on various support bills in the UK (they nearly cleared half the Astoria when supporting Pitchshifter once, they were that loud - a rumbling juggernaut of fury), it was brutal tracks like this sludgy, hardcore monster that sealed our approval. Judging on the oppressiveness and heaviness of this track, the fate forseen was not good, and this was an attempt to simply scare the fates away. Judging on the fact that Grady Avenell has recently rejoined the reformed band, it could be said to have worked well.

    90
    Kenickie
    TocarPunka
    At The Club
    1994

A bunch of Sunderland teenagers form a band, and write, in the main, songs about going out on the lash. Which made this album marvellous fun - and, it should be added, is one of my girlfriend's favourite albums ever - however this track is where it deviated slightly from the core subject. This track - a three-minute powerpop masterpiece - is a viciously sneering put-down of the mid-90s lo-fi scene and those who were, umm, "more indie than thou". It's not hard to side with Kenickie when they produce a song with this much wit...

    89
    Ned's Atomic Dustbin
    TocarKill Your Television
    God Fodder
    1990

Long maligned in the press, this band were always rather better than the music press would have you believe. Their finest moment is still the opening track on their debut, though, a rampaging, two-bass attack seemingly about a somewhat testy relationship that has happily endured twenty years and still sounds great.

    88
    Björk
    TocarOne Day
    Debut
    1993

Björk's first solo album-proper is a wonderfully diverse collection of songs, that gave a good idea of just how broad-minded a musician she was. From frankly odd musings on human nature, to sexuality, to simply losing it in a club, lyrically things were just as strange. At the heart of the album, though, was this gorgeous, tender declaration of love and hope that was a lot less complex than the rest of the album, and in this case all the better for it.

    87
    Jane's Addiction
    Three Days
    Ritual de lo Habitual
    1990

Jane's most majestic moment, this epic, eleven minute masterpiece is a track worth persevering with. Apparently telling the tale of a lover's tryst involving Perry Farrell and two others, it's lyrics are never exactly candid, but really, this is all about the music. It's vast length allows it to unfold gradually, and is evidence of just how talented a band of musicians JA were. You get guitar solos, bass solos, drum solos, and the most awe-inspiring climax to the song, that was even more extraordinary live when i saw it earlier this year.

    86
    Pitchshifter
    TocarW.Y.S.I.W.Y.G.
    www.pitchshifter.com" href="http://www.lastfm.com.br/music/Pitchshifter/www.pitchshifter.com" class="bbcode_album">http://www.pitchshifter.com nofollow=yes
    1998

This album was Pitchshifter's big breakthrough to the metal mainstream, moving from their heavier, Godflesh-influenced sound of before into a drum'n'bass-punk-metal hybrid that came along at just the right time. I'm hardly short of highlights to pick from this album, either, such was the strength of it, but I've plumped for the big live favourite that is always welcome to hear. As usual it has a subtle political theme, but for once it's all about the music, the punk charge and then electronic breakdowns with the stomping 'pit finale...

    85
    Portishead
    TocarStrangers
    Dummy
    1994

One of a number of tracks on this album that sound like they had been beamed in from another planet, so different did they sound at the time - Beth Gibbons' scratchy, distant vocal in the verses, the heavy, lumbering beats for other parts, the exquisite melancholy of it all. What's all the more remarkable is that over fifteen years and three albums, they have never been short of enthralling and unique (try as they might, no band has ever even come close to sounding like Portishead).

    84
    Tricky
    Suffocated Love
    Maxinquaye
    1995

I'll say more about the wonder that is this album at a later point, so for now I'll concentrate on just the one song. And that one song is this glorious, after-dark lament of two lovers giving their views on a relationship that may or may not be falling apart. Either way, it's a song utterly dripping with lust and eroticism, but never becoming seedy as some songs that try this do.

    83
    Skinny Puppy
    WARLOCKed
    Warlock EP
    1990

The mighty Puppy's finest five or six minutes (someone is going to slay me for this, I'm sure), I've never had any clue as to what nivek ogre was on about, but no matter - this is an awesome track that is unusually simple in structure for SP. Little more than the thumping beat, the odd synth line and sample, and Ogre's vocals, it's far less dense, and in this case all the better for it - also one of SP's more melodic moments, it's been a staple of the live set for years, and with good reason...

    82
    Brainiac
    Sexual Frustration
    Bonsai Superstar
    1996

The track that frankly, should have made Brainiac stars. It never quite worked out like that, although by the time Tim Taylor died in a car crash a few years later, they were recording their major-label debut. When the track first starts on record, it's a storm of distortion and Taylor's voice is buried within, but all it takes is one guitar chord for things to snap into focus, and it all kicks off from there. Basically Taylor detailing how he isn't getting any, the music is as chaotic as his mind, going on the lyrics, and in a parallel universe this would have been the all-conquering hit it deserved to be.

    81
    Death in Vegas
    Aisha
    The Contino Sessions
    1999

This album had an extraordinary amount of praise lavished on it, and that was partly down to the exquisite sound and mood, and also down to the amazing vocal performances gained from the guests that joined in. The pick of them, though, was this utterly demented appearance from Iggy Pop, ranting and raving about a serial killer who may or may not be confined to his head. The low-end rumble of the music matches Iggy's crazy delivery perfectly, and the video is just as fucked up.

  • 40 About My Top 50

    Out 22 2009, 3h01 por floor_

    1. How did you get into 31? Green Day
I begun listening to them at the beginning of Year 9 I think, my best friend at the time liked them, so I bought American Idiot to check them out, then got all the other albums for Christmas.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? Jentina
TocarBad Ass Strippa Oh dear haha. She's 22 because I've overplayed this song way too much, I can remember buying it from Asda when I was a young un :') The music just gave me a feeling about the excitement to come from growing up, so this reminds me of my youth and memories of going out, hence why I play it a lot.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29? Joy Division
Oh gosh, depends on my mindset. Ian Curtis has some beautiful lyrics.
    But at the moment because of my solitary attitude I'll opt for some Isolation lyrics;
But if you could just see the beauty
These things I could never describe
    These pleasures a wayward distraction
    This is my wonderful prize
Highlights for me how trapped I am within myself but in an optimistic sense. Reminds me of the quirks that I never show anybody and the daily rituals that only I get to see and it makes me feel content with who I am.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49? Peaches
    The Teaches of Peaches
Probably followed by Impeach My Bush

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? Violent Femmes
Two, I really should own more though...
Only started listening to these a lot recently, probably due to Jeffrey Blitz whoring them in Rocket Science. Don't worry, I'm not just a TocarBlister in the Sun lover ;-)

    6. Favorite song by 50? Studio B
Haha oh god, I think they only have one? Well one 'hit'. Again, another song I overplay way too much. I See Girls again, is one of those songs that I loved when I was younger and reminds me of my youth and the excitement of going out etcc.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad? Radiohead
You're asking me if Radiohead have any sad songs? Aha.
TocarExit Music (For A Film) stands out here as it's my second favourite Radiohead song and I'd like this played at my funeral.

    8. Favorite song by 15? Death in Vegas
Dirge hands down. One of the most beautiful, indescribable songs I have ever heard. It's one of those songs that are so dark yet so innocent at the same time. If anything it reminds me of my state of mind. Projects wonderful images and sequences into my mind.

    9. Favorite song by 5? IAMX
Christopher Corner, nom nom nom. He has so many tbh.
President, Song Of Imaginary Beings, You Stick It In Me or The Negative Sex if just for the line; "We all want to fuck ourselves and rape the world." (L)

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? Klaxons
Atlantis to Interzone (Demo) will never fail to remind me of my youth and always conjures up memories of K-Fo, meeting them, and general memories from being 14-15.

    11. Favorite album by 40? Michael Andrews
Aha obviously has to be; Donnie Darko: Music From The Original Motion Picture Score
One of my favourite scores ever. TocarManipulated Living is just absolute love. I cannot stop playing it at the moment when I go for my solitary walks. I feel powerful just listening to it.

    12. Favorite song by 12? Late of the Pier
Perhaps a bit clichéd but TocarSpace and the Woods
I can just completely let go to this song, and it brings out the slimy indie kid in me aha.

    13. What's a good memory involving 33? The Smiths
Oh Mr Morrissey...a good memory would probably be the first time I ever heard The Smiths. Which was yearrrs ago. VH1 was on and How Soon Is Now? came on and I remember staring at the screen with such intrigue and curiosity. I then went on to hunt out some Smiths albums and have made many memories since. Dancing to This Charming Man on nights out and being in isolation silently crying to There Is a Light That Never Goes Out are in the memory fileee.

    14. Favorite song by 37? Crystal Castles
TocarAirWar I love Airwar. It's so simple, yet so easy to lose yourself in. You can dance or relax to it too which I really like. Very calming. I actually remember how I discovered Crystal Castles too. An online friend sent me a link to their Myspace and then sent me their remix of Atlantis To Interzone and said I would probably like them because of my liking for Klaxons and because I liked more hardcore stufff.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? The Avalanches
Frontier Psychiatrist (L)! Just 4 minutes of absolute brilliance. I always play this when I'm getting ready or if I have control of the music at a party. To hear this on a night out would be truly amazing.

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live? Nirvana
Haha none I'm afraid. To have seen them would have been quite the experience though.

    17. What was the first song you heard by 23? The Gossip
TocarListen Up Courtesy of Miss Nicole Walker. I remember loving Beth, the video and the bassline ever so much. Before Standing in the Way of Control was completely whored I can remember me and Nicole sending each other songs of us singing to different songs and she did TocarListen Up and it was so good! I got hooked on Standing in the Way of Control from this and played it quite a bit a couple of years back.

    18. Favorite album by 11? Nellee Hooper
Haha, unfortunately I don’t think that there is a link to his only ‘album’ (U)
He did the Romeo & Juliet score. And this is my favourite score. Ever.
Introduction To Romeo will always be in my top five favourite songs ever. It is one of the most gorgeous, beautiful pieces of music that I have ever heard. Sampling Radiohead, adding violins and Shakespearan quotes, phenomenal.

    19. Favorite member of 1? Bright Eyes
    Conor Oberst
    My idol, my inspiration etccc.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? Lady GaGa
Haha, now isn’t this the guilty pleasure…None, but tbh I think she would be great live. She’s an amazing performer and two of my most favourite of her performances are from The Ellen Degeneres show and The Rove show. Her lyrics are absolutely fucking dire though, but that just makes me like her just that little bit more. Annoyingly catchy as fuck songs, i.e. I can’t stand TocarPoker Face yet I want to listen to it.

    21. What's a good memory involving 45? Timbaland
Haha, oh dear. Another overplayed song I’m guessing…but the good memory has to be that every time I’m in Basement with Nicole they always play TocarThe Way I Are and it’s just a great song to dance to and start the night with I guess, well it’s a great song if you’re in Basement…everything else they play is fucking dire :-)

    22. What's your favourite song by 16? Madonna
TocarHung Up stands out by a mile. Although Frozen, Music and Beautiful Stranger are great too. This song just gives me indescribable feelings and takes me off to another world, just with the intro and the climax towards the end (L)

    23. First song you ever heard by 47? The Cardigans
Probably TocarLovefool Brilliant pop song. I love Nina Persson’s voice, it just seems to reflect her beauty on the outside so well.

    24. Favorite album by 21? Justin Timberlake
    Justified
Just because of the youth factor. I don’t care what anybody says, JT is a great pop artist. I actually bought this album when I was younger (L) aha.

    25. Favorite song by 18? Daft Punk
Oh so many choices! Probably TocarHarder, Better, Faster, Stronger though. Just because of how it never fails to remind me perfectly of an arcade and then this triggers memories of the amusements and Spanish City in Whitley Bay aha and I just remember really good times and then I think to myself how I want to dance in an arcade and this song is just a great song tbh. Kanye picked this sample well.

    26. First song by 38? Regina Spektor
That I heard or that she released? Well the first song by Regina that really caught my attention was TocarAprès Moi when the lovely Selim put it on the mix CD he made me. I then started to listen to some of her stuff, particularly Begin to Hope and I instantly liked her.

    27. Favorite lyric by 3? Test Icicles
Lmao, because this is a band that I clearly loved for their masterpiece lyrics :’)
Oh I do miss them though. Such memories they bring. Nothing special, but I love how the lyrics in Circle. Square. Triangle and the song as a whole manage to highlight the change from the 90’s to the 00’s era. Along with the video, I think it’s the first piece of music that makes that transition and reaches out to that particular audience and gives you feeeeeling.

    28. Favorite song by 2? Patrick Wolf
TocarThe Libertine The first ever band or artist that made me appreciate the beauty and importance of lyrics. I will always love Patrick Wolf just based on the reason alone that he helped get me through the hardest time of my life, particularly this song. Achieving freedom is worth more than anything else and this highlights this perfectly. The violin, the lyrics, the darkness ahhh (L)

    29. First song you heard of 10? Laura Marling
I’m guessing it would be TocarGhosts as I heard good things about her and downloaded Alas I Cannot Swim and this is the opener! Beautiful voice and such beautiful lyrics for a 19 year old.

    30. Favorite song by 8? Fluke
TocarAbsurd Nothing could ever beat it. Possibly my most favourite dance song, ever. I remember asking a DJ to play this and he had never heard of Fluke (U) I then called him shit.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? Metronomy
Even though I bought a ticket to go see them at the academy I didn’t end up going because of my shit ex at the time. So none. I should of seen them though. I like Metronomy, nothing special but nothing bad either.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? The Hives
TocarHate To Say I Told You So An absolute classic of an Indie song. I like listening to this on a sunny walk when I’m not overly thinking and surrounded by people, it makes me smile.

    33. Favorite album by 12? Late of the Pier
Considering that there is only one…Fantasy Black Channel It is a very good album though. Hence why LOTP are number 12.

    34. Worst song by 9? Arctic Monkeys
A few from Favourite Worst Nightmare were extremely disappointing, but Fluorescent Adolescent really fucking annoys me though and I hate it.

    35. What's the first song you heard by 34? MGMT
Something from Climbing to New Lows, I can’t recall what though. I don’t find MGMT to be amazing or anything. Quite bored of them at the moment.

    36. Favorite album by 42? Faithless
Reverence Faithless were the first ever ‘real’ band that I classified as my favourite, i.e. after the Steps and Spice Girls era…I absolutely adored them and I remember buying this album in Windows years ago. This reminds me when I had my tape player and I used to make a hell of a lot of tapes and when I bought this I was so excited to be able to put the likes of TocarSalva Mea and TocarInsomnia on my mixes. Oh, good times.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live? No Doubt
None, not too fussed though aha. I’m surprised these are so high. But saying that though the multiple plays of TocarHey Baby, Don’t Speak and TocarJust A Girl must have gotten them there. Good band.

    38. What's your favorite album by 35? Kasabian
I actually think their newest album West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum would have to be my favourite. If it’s one thing I like about Kasabian it’s their consistency. They don’t try to better themselves or head in a new direction, yet all of their material still manages to be fresh and maintains the element of just good sound indie.

    39. What's the first song you heard by 28? Gary Numan
Probably TocarCars. One of the best songs of the 80’s, electro at it’s best.

    40. What's your favorite album by 7? Muse
Jesussss, probably Origin Of Symmetry Features some of their best, although it’s closely followed by Black Holes and Revelations, but I can’t stand TocarStarlight

Well this didn’t take long at all…
