David Sylvian é um músico e compositor de origem britânica, conhecido maioritariamente por ter sido vocalista da banda Japan. No período áureo dos anos 80, surgia então um banda com uma sonoridade completamente diferente a par de Bauhaus de Peter Murphy. A música e sonoridade de Japan evolui bastante ao longo da década de 80 e finais de 70, inspirando-se em artistas glam rock como David Bowie, T. Rex e New York Dolls, ou mesmo punk, como Patti Smith.
David Sylvian é conhecido por criar a sua música a partir dos mais variados estilos musicais, desde jazz, classic rock, música ambiente, e música electrónica.
Já trabalhou com 坂本龍一, Jon Hassell, Holger Czukay, Robert Fripp e Bill Nelson.
Em 1991, Robert Fripp pergunta a Sylvian se gostaria de ser o novo vocalista de King Crimson. Sylvian recusa, e aproveita a ocasião para propor um projecto entre os dois: The First Day.

I've yet to hear a song of his, either solo or with Japan, that I didn't like. He's truly amazing.

I hadn't heard anything new by him since "Secrets of the Beehive" (one of my all-time favorite albums). Now I'm listening to some tracks from "Dead Bees on a Cake", and to me it sounds much more like "Gone to Earth" than anything else he did. Beautiful though.

I love David Sylvian's old stuff and that sensual song he did with his wife Ingrid. He's one of the few real artists from the 80's., and his albums are not embarrassing to own or collect to this day. Apart from Darkest Dreaming and World Citizen, I haven't heard anything mainstream from David lately.

Patman, I'm with you. He's one of my favorite pop artists but he really does sometimes veer into "cheese" territory. I love that the other Japan guys were pissed that he wanted to use the name "Rain Tree Crow", it really is a terrible band name (reeks of people wearing t-shirts with wolves and fake native american jewelry).

I'm kind of on the fence about this man. On one hand, I think it's pretty great. On the other, it has this sort of new-agey feel to it that's grating.

actually every album of Sylvian have something. Look on the " Dead Bees on a cake" and the track called " Alphabet Angel " - pure genius. " Before the Bullfight" from GONE to EARTH or SECRETS of the BEEHIVE. And we can't forgot works with Fripp. So...as I said before, it's extremely hard to choose the best one from his career.
