  • How mainstream Am I?

    Jun 19 2009, 6h32 por provlear

Step One: List your top twenty five most scrobbled artists and the total number of listeners for each.

    9. Linkin Park (1,412,388)
    25. The Smashing Pumpkins (1,329,678)
    7. Fall Out Boy (1,064,738)
    21. The Chemical Brothers (1,061,558)
    3. Queens of the Stone Age (1,027,727)
    4. Incubus (1,252,850)
    8. The Prodigy (967,268)
    18. Fiona Apple (669,819)
    22. Yann Tiersen (548,355)
    2. Smash Mouth (427,428)
    15. Eve 6 (327,934)
    16. Saliva (327,243)
    14. Filter (258,886)
    13. Matchbook Romance (257,586)
    5. Michael Andrews (212,307)
    11. David Holmes (153,681)
    19. Olive (141,388)
    6. A Guy Called Gerald (81,747)
    10. The Blanks (8,371)
    12. Skybox (4,044)
    23. Little Compass (255)
    1. Andrew Pants (108)
    20. Ember Coast (91)
    17. Runaway Diamonds (90)
    24. Supafloss (80)

Step Two: Calculate the average (Total divided by 25).

    Average: 461,425

Step Three: Divide this figure by the total number of listeners for the top scrobbled artist on Last.fm.

    Top artist: Coldplay (2,325,449)
    Mainstream Percentage: 19.84%

This is obviously due to the pathetically small listener numbers for those no-name bands I love so much. Again, this would be more accurate using my Last Week top bands, as that's more reflective of my actual listening habits.

  • Musical Variety

    Jun 19 2009, 6h03 por provlear

First, make a list of your overall top 25 artists. Then, for each of these artists, add the 3 most similar artists to your list. Delete all instances of bands that come up more than once, add up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A low score represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a max 100 represents an extremely varied one.

  • Arbitrary 40 Questions

    Jun 19 2009, 5h11 por provlear

    01. How did you get into #31?
Batter the Drag - This is one of many Flying Blanket Studios artists Kate and I adore. This one she had to convince me of, though. It wasn't instant love.

    02. What was the first song you ever heard by #22?
Yann Tiersen Whatever is the first song in Amelie, such a beautiful movie, and what amazing music. The whole CD makes you feel warm and fuzzy while driving.

    03. What's your favorite lyric by #41?
The Minibosses Not only do they not sing, but they're really not a great love of mine. They're just one of the first CDs I added, so their longevity helps their numbers.

    04. What is your favorite album by #49?
The Huskies only have the one album, The Good Fight

    05. How many albums by #13 do you own?
Matchbook Romance - Voices is the only one that I own. I haven't heard any of their other stuff, but I should, since I love Voices so much.

    06. What is your favorite song by #50?
MC Frontalot has so many good ones... TocarBraggadocio, Floating Bridge, Yellow Lasers... but my favorite will always be TocarCrime Spree, the original version with the unauthorized samples.

    07. Is there a song by #4 that makes you sad?
Incubus (my favorite band, despite their ranking) has a couple of mournful songs, but the ones that get me most are TocarPardon Me (they mention being 23, so now that I'm older it stings), TocarWish You Were Here (any time Kate's out of town), and TocarNowhere Fast (reminds me of missed opportunities from my college days)

    08. What is your least favorite song by #15?
Eve 6 Actually, most of their stuff is kinda mediocre. Jesus Nitelite is particularly lame, as you can tell by the title.

    09. What is your favorite song by #5?
Michael Andrews - TocarSlipping Away incorporates both the beauty and the creepy parts from Donnie Darko in one track.

    10. Is there a song by #6 that makes you happy?
A Guy Called Gerald is kinda downtempo... not really cheery, not really sad either.

    11. What is your favorite album by #40?
Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots is the only one of theirs I've heard. I don't have multiple albums from a lot of people.

    12. What is your favorite song by #10?
The Blanks Again, longevity helps their numbers, but they have some pretty good songs. It's a close race between Happy Halloween and Commandos (Attack!), both of which use the same clever gimmick.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving #33?
My Chemical Romance When I wasn't ostracized by as many people as I thought I would be for liking them.

    14. What is your favorite song by #37?
Staind Both TocarIt's Been Awhile and TocarOutside are high school radio classics.

    15. Is there a song by #19 that makes you happy?
Olive is again downtempo, though to a lesser extent. Do a lot of people get happy from their music?

    16. How many times have you seen #24 live?
Supafloss I don't like live music, though on rare occasions I can be dragged to little shows. I dunno if I could handle a whole evening of Supafloss, though.

    17. What is the first song you heard by #23?
Little Compass is a Flying Blanket Studios artist that Kate has always loved, and through constant repetition of TocarRisky Business she got me to love that one song. Having the whole album for a while now, I've slowly warmed up to the rest of their stuff too.

    18. What is your favorite album by #11?
David Holmes - Ocean's Thirteen Again, the only album I've heard, and I wouldn't call it a favorite.

    19. Who is your favorite member of #1?
Andrew Pants is a one man genius all on his own. So Andrew Pants is my favorite member of Andrew Pants.

    20. How many times have you seen #14 live?
Filter I can't picture a scenario that would get me to a Filter concert.

    21. What is a good memory you have involving #45?
Blaqk Audio I recently made a friend who is a fan, but she ended up not being my roommate. So it's not a happy memory after all.

    22. What is your favorite song by #16?
Saliva The one song they're most famous for: Alive

    23. What is the first song you heard by #47?
t.A.T.u. Who knows? Whichever of their massively overplayed radio hits I heard first.

    24. What is your favorite album by #3?
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf See? Even my #3 I only have one album of.

    25. What is your favorite song by #18?
Fiona Apple Oh man. Her whole When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King... album is near perfection. TocarOn the Bound, TocarLimp, TocarPaper Bag, TocarA Mistake, TocarFast as You Can, TocarGet Gone...

    26. What is the first song you heard by #38?
Clearlake I had and loved Widescreen for about a year before I bothered to look up the rest of their music, and the way I'm addicted to it, Clearlake will be a lot higher than #38 soon.

    27. What is your favourite lyric that #21 has sung?
The Chemical Brothers This quiz keeps choosing particularly wordless artists. I think my favorite vocal sample of theirs is on TocarUnder the Influence

    28. What is your favourite song by #2?
Smash Mouth Who owes a LOT of listens to their longevity in my library, has a beautiful rarely heard song: TocarWaste.

    29. What is the first song you heard by #32?
Shirley Walker Of course, the amazingly perfect Batman: The Animated Series Theme

    30. What is your favorite song by #8?
The Prodigy Probably Smack My Bitch Up thanks to it's awesome use in Charlie's Angels.

    31. How many times have you seen #17 live?
Runaway Diamonds Never, but I would actually go to see them live. Not that I'd be able to stop Kate from taking me even if I didn't want to.

    32. Is there a song by #44 that makes you happy?
ohGr Just about the angriest music in my library, so no.

    33. What is your favorite album by #12?
Skybox - Arco Iris Again, their only album that I know of. It is pretty great, though.

    34. What is the worst song by #29?
Apartment 26 Wow, they're pretty much a two hit wonder for me. They've got a particularly crap song, Evils, meant to be an interlude I think.

    35. What was the first song you heard by #34?
Dear and the Headlights Something Kate played for me over and over, probably. That girl has a good ear, though. I love these guys now.

    36. What is your favorite album by #42?
AFI Finaly someone I can actually answer thsi question for. DECEMBERUNDERGROUND

    37. How many times have you seen #39 live?
Tinfed I'd be surprised if they ever did a show within 500 miles of me during the short time they played music.

    38. What is your favorite album by #36?
Grant Kirkhope does video game music, so he doesn't get albums.

    39. What is the first song you heard by #28?
Bôa - Duvet The theme for Lain caught my attention far more than the anime ever did.

    40. What is your favorite album by #7?
Fall Out Boy None in particular. Each has a few good songs, each has a few disappointments.

  • [My Gang] Jon Hopkins - Cold Out There : Reco of the Week 02 Jun 09

    Jun 2 2009, 20h42 por Babs_05

Track: TocarCold Out There (full track)
    Artist: Jon Hopkins
    Album: Opalescent (2005)
Tags: genius, ambient, electronic, instrumental, chiller cabinet, the arctic circle, my gang rotw
    Video: Click the pic...

    YouTube

I have heard two outstanding new innovative electronic albums in the last few days - Thom Yorke's friends Moderat - Moderat and Jon Hopkins - Insides, both released in May and both equally as ingenious. The only reason I've chosen Jon Hopkins is because I also want to tell you about the latest news from The Arctic Circle and the Chiller Cabinet.

The track I recommend this week is one I have heard many times on The Chiller Cabinet, a late night radio show of "ambience, movies, & minimalism", currently on ChillDAB. The track is available here in Last.fm and I have it tagged for the group radio, which is based entirely on official tracklists I have managed to get hold of. To date, it has been my favourite Jon Hopkins track, although having heard the new album, I have some thinking to do. Also, we are enjoying a mini-heatwave here in London which apparently ends overnight tonight. So this is our weather forecast for the coming week! (Well maybe not quite...).

Ben Eshmade, producer of the Chiller Cabinet, has been very busy working on related projects, from free lunchtime concerts - Daylight Music - to free to download weekly podcasts - Arctic Circle Radio. Daylight Music also gets its own podcast called The Hut, which you can see in the same link. Week 2 was announced earlier today, so you haven't missed too much yet. See this journal from Chill DAB who introduce the shows. There are tracklists available for both podcasts and I plan to tag them all up for new tag radios, coming soon.

Insides, might just trounce Moderat's eponymous 'debut' (which was delayed by about seven years) by the tiniest smidge for its depth, variety, range and vision. Encompassing every sound between rural folkiness and breakbeat/jazz percussion, stopping for the tenderest of whispers along the way, the music is as beautiful as it is clever. From Hopkins' MySpace:
At long last, a mere 5 years since Contact Note, my new album Insides is out. It was recorded at Cafe Music Studios in London, by me, on the piano, and the laptop. It also features the following amazing guest instumentalists: Leo Abrahams on the guitar and hurdy-gurdy, Emma Smith on the violin, Davide Rossi on the electric violin, Vince Sipprell on the viola, Lee Muddy Baker on the drums, King Creosote on the humming, and Lisa Lindley-Jones on the additional vocals. Remixes of Light Through the Veins were provided by David Holmes and Ewan Pearson. Mastering was performed by Guy Davie at Electric Mastering. The record has been released by Double Six / domino records and the awesome artwork has been designed by Man Vs Magnet.

The bulk of the recording was done in the first half of 2008, and was finally completed last August. However, some tracks were conceived as early as 2005, with a few more being written in 2006. Then 2007 was too busy and only left me time to write Vessel in the September. Finally I managed to set aside a concentrated bit of time between February and June 2008 and turned it into what it is now.

Small Memory was the last to be completed, taking less than one day. In contrast, Light Through the Veins, from its origin as a simple nine-note idea in late 2006, eventually took over three weeks to finish, and ended up containing about 800 sounds, layered over 128 tracks.

Of course, as any Coldplay fan will know, Light Through the Veins was sampled in Viva la Vida.

The video was very welcome today as temperatures reached 28C in my living room. Not sure I'll feel the same once the north winds start blowing again. It features penguins, which will no doubt please Ben Eshmade immensely.

  • Skins Season 3 Music

    Mar 5 2009, 19h08 por jonathanlovatt

Well Skins is back on our screens and as ever, the music is really good with a fantastic mix of new, old, obscure, prominent and generally eclectic.

Only 6 episodes out of the 10 have been broadcast so far, but here's some of my favourite music from what's been shown. I'll update this as new episodes are available.

    Episode 1

An introduction to the new cast and some great music to fit with their personalities.

Son Of The Father by Fucked Up welcomes up to the first episode and Freddie causing general mayhem in Bristol on his skateboard.

Monsters Under The Bed by Eugene McGuinness welcomes up to the first assembly in the fictional Roundview College, pop-py, eclectic and very original!

I'm the Man Who Loves You by Wilco. As Cook introduces a slightly confused JJ to the wonders of the girls in the college, this plays in the background - a perfect fit and incredibly catchy pop tune!

Nefi and Girly by Asobi Sesku serenades us with pop/rock perfection as the producers tease us with what's coming up in the next 9 weeks! Gorgeous!

    Episode 2

Probably my least favourite music, dominated by heavy rock as the... vivacious Cook enjoys his 17th birthday doing all the things he probably shouldn't.

TocarDon't Stop Me Now by Queen is probably my favourite Queen song and epitomises everything that Cook holds true...!

TocarEye Of The Tiger by Survivor - another one that I can't stop listening to - a definite classic!

TocarKayleigh by Marillion. As the episode takes on a more poignant tone, another fabulous 80s song plays.

Ace Of Spaces by Motorhead. At the end of the episode, this song pipes up again as Cook dismisses all he has learned from the heart-to-heart with Freddie and perks up again walking down the street.

    Episode 3

Focusing on Thomas this week, a newly arrived illegal immigrant from the Congo who has to quickly learn to adapt to survive. As you might imagine, dominated by music from Africa.

I don't know the song that plays as Thomas is introduced right at the beginning of the episode and can't find it anywhere - so if anyone knows it please let me know!

TocarEye Adaba by Asa plays as a heartbroken Pandora is comforted by her aunt, I have no idea what the words mean but it sounds so beautiful and I love it!

Bi Lambam by Ballake Sissko & Toumani Dibante - a rather obscure one this but iTunes carries it, lovely string music that Thomas plays in the gym of Roundview College when he thinks nobody is listening.

    Episode 4

Pandora is portrayed as something of a girly girl, so it's perhaps no surprise that her episode's music is dominated by mainstream stuff. Doesn't mean it's not good, though!

TocarLivin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi. All it took was some drug-laced brownies for Pandora's straight laced mum to be dancing around to this one! Great rock-out song.

Red Dress by Sugababes - a song I love but don't often admit it - foot tapping and fabulous!

Jump by Girls Aloud. See last entry - makes me want to jump! Love it!

Breaker by Low. Taking on a more sedate tone as the following episode is introduced - this song is downbeat and simply gorgeous.

    Episode 5

Skater Freddie's episode is characterised by a mix of very eclectic tunes from a wide range of artists.

Now That I Know by Devendra Banhart. I had this album for ages but never gave it much of a listen until I heard this track playing as Freddie, struggling with his problems seems to have lost his skating edge. Amazing song, great album too.

TocarLove Reign Over Me by David Holmes plays in the background as the following week's episode is introduced. Never heard this song before but think it's fab - love the words!

    Episode 6

It's a three horse race as Naomi tries to win the election at Roundview College. Another mix of eclectic tunes for an eclectic personality.

TocarDiamond Day by Vashti Bunyan. Since this song came out, it seems like everyone and their dog has been using it in their TV show / movie / advert - and Skins is no exception. Not that it's a bad thing, it's tuneful and sweet.

TocarGood Weekend by Art Brut is a great rock-out, cheerful song that plays near the beginning of this episode as they file into the college.

TocarWhite Film by Tujiko Noriko is an interesting choice and certainly one I'd never heard of before but another fab song - downbeat but pretty and the artist has a great voice!

TocarJump In by High Places - As Naomi and one of the twins cycles happily, this equally cheery song plays in the background. Especially like the "Hey! Hey!" shouts!

    Episode 7

JJs trials and tribulations in an eventful 24 hours are characterised by a variety of classical music by Debussy.

The calm after the storm - we see the after effects of JJ getting locked on and wrecking his room with the fairly well known Clare De Lune. A very relaxing piano piece which I think was also featured on the Oceans 11 series of films.

Golliwog's Cakewalk plays in the background as JJ trashed the psychiatric clinic, which curiously everyone else seems oblivious too! Perhaps they are over-medicated...?

As JJ goes off to visit Effy, she's listening to the always reliable Little Richard and the foot tapping TocarLucille.

Back to Debussy, as the episode finishes we are again treated to Clare de Lune and the rather fine Arabesque No. 1, and that rounds off my favourites in a rather excellent episode - music wise.

    Episode 8

Party in the woods? You can probably guess what's coming! Music-wise, this episode was back to traditional Skins territory. My favourites:

Ashley Chambliss - Tocara little more of you plays at the start of the episode, wistful and soulful, as a numb-looking Effy tries to get in touch with Freddie.

As Cook walks to Effy's with a "fuckin' black forest gateaux" and various other groceries, TocarNice And Easy by Susan Cadogan is playing in the background, very mellow-pop and fun, pity we don't get to hear more of it.

The "shrooms" are kicking in in a fantastically done scene with great music - Gang Gang Dance feat. Tinchy stryder - princes is a perfect tune to be playing here with all the guys and girls (except Katie) totally out of it and having a great time!
