  • Favorite Albums of the 2000-2009 Decade

    Dez 5 2009, 4h15 por viveleroi

I would consider myself an audiophile. I love listening to music and due to my current profession I spend almost eight hours a day doing just that. I've always enjoyed a wide range of genres and I enjoy sharing music with friends, especially when I can introduce someone to something they really enjoy.

I've picked out my top five albums from 2000 - 2009. These albums were selected because many, if not all of the songs are favorites of mine. I've also chosen them because they work well as complete albums and because they're easy to listen to more than once. They each support a wide variety of moods and are very unique from other music that's come out in the past decade.

First, I'll share what I consider my absolute favorite track from the entire decade:

Emilíana Torrini – Me and Armini
    "Birds" - http://lala.com/zmwo
Last.fm does not list this album, so may listen to this song on Lala.com.

    The Top Five Albums:

    1. Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree

    2. Röyksopp – Junior

    3. Rob Dougan – Furious Angels

    4. Radiohead – In Rainbows

    5. Supreme Beings of Leisure – 11i

    Best Concert Album/DVD:

David Gilmour – Live In Gdansk

    Honorable Mention:
    Helicopter Girl – Voodoo Chic
OceanLab – Sirens of the Sea
Leigh Nash – Blue On Blue
    Charlotte Gainsbourg – 5.55
    Lunascape – Innerside
Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Knives Don't Have Your Back
    Robert Miles – Organik

    PORCA PUTTANA!
    Buon ascolto.

  • My Record Collection (With Pictures!) - UPDATED 11/30/09

    Nov 12 2009, 22h57 por laurienicole

I've been collecting records for the past eight years - since I was fifteen. I don't have a huge collection or anything but it's still fun to collect and play them. I mainly buy them at record stores in the New England area and online through Amazon and eBay.

    Pink Floyd - The Wall
I won this one on eBay. It's a Columbia Records promotional copy, and has a gold stamp on the back that says: "For Promotion Only. Ownership Reserved By CBS. Sale Is Unlawful."

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
Another recent eBay purchase! I know this isn't one of their most well-liked albums but I really enjoy it. I'm actually listening to it right now!) To be honest, I really don't understand why more people aren't into this album. Yeah, it's basically a Roger Waters solo album but I guess that doesn't bother me because I really like Roger Waters haha.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
This is the 30th anniversary reissue on 180-gram virgin vinyl, complete with posters and stickers! I currently have all three posters hanging in my room. :)

    Radiohead - The Bends
This one's also on 180-gram vinyl. And it just so happens to be my favorite Radiohead album!

TV on the Radio - Young Liars
I hate to say it but I don't think I've ever listened to this. I got it ages ago and I just never got around to hearing it. I'm sure I had a reason for buying it but the reason's evading me at the moment.

    Mice Parade - Obrigado Saudade
This is another one I haven't listened to a whole lot, but I remember really liking it when I did.

    The Clash - Combat Rock
    Reissue.

    The Clash - The Clash
    Another reissue.

The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope
    This one's an original.

Saves the Day - Stay What You Are
Like I said, I started collecting records when I was fifteen years old. Not that there's anything wrong with Saves The Day, but it's definitely more indicative of my musical taste several years ago.

Preston School of Industry - All This Sounds Gas
I bought this album because I liked the song "Whalebones" but I don't think I ever listened to the entire album. I swear, I do listen to some of these records!

    David Bowie - Stage
Like this one, for example! I love the version of "Station To Station" on this album.

    David Bowie - Young Americans
This may be the first David Bowie album I ever bought.

    David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Apparently this one used to be owned by someone named Sarah. I like how the way she wrote her name kind of matches with the look of the album cover.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
This one is a reissue on 180-gram virgin vinyl. It was bit pricey, but worth it!

    The Rolling Stones - AFTERMATH
One of the first albums I ever bought. There's some guy's address on the front and another guy's name written on the back. So this album has basically had at least three owners, I guess. That's why I love getting used records. I like owning something that has a little bit of history to it.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls
My favorite Stones album! I got this one used on Amazon.

The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue
I actually think this one might have belonged to my mom.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
    On 180-gram yellow vinyl.

    The Velvet Underground - Loaded
    On 180-gram red vinyl.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
    On 180-gram blue vinyl.

Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
I got this one used on Amazon.

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
I went through absolute hell to get this album. I bought it used on Amazon and I accidentally had it shipped to my college address (where I don't live anymore) instead of my home address. The college post office mistakenly returned it to the sender instead of forwarding it to me, so it went all the way back to Georgia and spent some time in a dead letter office before it finally got to me haha.

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
I bought this one used. The cover and the sleeve are a bit water-damaged but the record still plays wonderfully.

The Doors - The Doors Greatest Hits
I know, I know..."greatest hits albums are for housewives and little girls" lol. I got this one for my birthday this year.

The Get Up Kids - On A Wire
Great album art! And I still like the songs "Grunge Pig" and "All That I Know".

Hot Hot Heat - Knock Knock Knock
I got this one for my 17th birthday. I played the hell out of "5 Times Out Of 100". What a great song.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
The second album I ever owned.

    Ramones - Pleasant Dreams
I got this one for my birthday this year also.

    Ramones - Leave Home
The first album I ever owned. September 9th, 2001: the day I started collecting records!

Bright Eyes - Vinyl Box Set
The envy of Bright Eyes fans everywhere...the elusive vinyl box set. I got this back in the day when it cost next to nothing and now it sells for hundreds of dollars apparently. Think I'll hang on to this one...

    The Hollies - The Hollies
This one belonged to my mom. (I know it's wrong to keep the cellophane on the outside of the cover, but it's already been there for decades so I assume the damage is already done heh.)

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
I just got this one today! I tried to get this album for a couple of weeks but sadly I kept getting outbid. I guess it all worked out because if I'd won those auctions, I never would have gotten this album! What's so special about it? This is a Japanese pressing and it includes "See Emily Play", which is one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd songs. :)

    David Gilmour - Arnold Layne
I got this one at Newbury Comics this weekend...well, more accurately, my boyfriend got it for me because he is awesome. :) On the back it says "Dedicated to the memory of Syd Barrett." <3

Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
Okay, story time. I tried for so long to find this album on both eBay and Amazon, and through wax.fm as well. Each time, I'd end up dismayed as it was extremely hard to find exactly what I was looking for, which was an original copy of the album (meaning, not the Madcap/Barrett double release) in reasonable condition at an equally reasonable price. I can't even remember how many auctions I bid on, only to find myself outbid in the final hours.
Well, imagine my surprise when I went on Amazon to do my daily "try to find my favorite Syd Barrett album" search and there it was. For less than half of what I was willing to pay for it on eBay. Without a second thought, I purchased it. It's probably going to get here broken and covered in anthrax, I thought. But it didn't matter.
That was exactly one week ago. For some reason, I had a feeling that the album was going to get here today. At about ten of three, I started peeking out my front door, checking to see if the mail truck was there. At about five after, I watched the mail lady as she walked down the street. I saw a square-shaped package, but I tried not to get too excited.
Well, it's here. In perfect condition. Exactly what I wanted. It was definitely worth the wait, I have to say. <3

    ---

These are some random 45s I've picked up over the years. To be honest, with the exception of two of them I've never played them. I really should!

Ego - The Question Mark EP
Apparently this is "melodic French jangle-pop" of some sort. It came with an insert that's all in French, and it's limited to 750 copies.

    Backwater - Memory/Silver Surfer
No clue about this one. It was limited to 700 copies and is on red vinyl.

    The Technical Jed - Liquid/Cottage 13
Again, absolutely no clue. Apparently they're Richmond, VA indie pop.

    Marilyn Manson - mOBSCENE
Well, we've all heard of him, obviously. This one's on blue vinyl and came with a poster which currently hangs in my room. :)

This one's a total mystery to me, but it looks like there's a tiny picture of Edie Sedgwick on the front?

Stereophonics - Have a Nice Day
I remember I really liked this song a lot at one point. Enough to buy the single, I suppose.

Marilyn Manson - I Don't Like The Drugs 10" Picture Disk
I don't know about this one. I got it for relatively cheap but various websites have it listen at a wide variety of prices. Who knows haha.

    ---

Just for good measure, here's a picture of my turntable. I got it for my seventeenth birthday, so it's about six years old:

The records on the shelf below are actually not "mine" - they're records that my mom and grandparents gave me years ago because, among all of us, I'm the only one that actually has and uses a turntable anymore. Maybe I'll post pictures of them at some point as well - there's some pretty interesting old stuff in there!

And this is what it looks like when I'm playing a record...a Syd Barrett record, to be precise. :)

  • [10.09.09] The Australian Pink Floyd Show Review [Finished!]

    Out 10 2009, 18h07 por Torenkownage

So this makes my third year in a row seeing The Australian Pink Floyd Show. They were amazing in 2007, fell off a bit in 2008 (the setlist wasn't worth writing home about), but now they're back on top and in perfect form! The Aussies have topped themselves yet again! It's a greatest hits setlist with a few surprises thrown in. The lasers and lights were flashing, the inflatables were jumpin' and the band did not disappoint!

Firm in my seat, the lights were low. A blank Mr. Screen. A drum set to the back-left, the keyboards in the front-right, and various guitar rigs set up inbetween. It felt like a Floyd concert before it even started. The lights dimmed all the way, Mr. Screen showed signs of life, and the iconic heartbeats slowly faded in. "...I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks...", "...I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like most of us have...". The thumping and maniacal laughter reached a breaking point, to where it could get no louder, and Speak to Me was segued via the beautiful opening chords of Breathe. The lap steel sounded perfect, like David himself were there playing it for the very first time. After Breathe came On the Run in which the usual visuals and accompanying sounds were there, and it was all spot on. The alarms began ringing violently after the crash, and Time was in full swing. The roto-toms were right on the mark and took us into the vocals. "Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day-yy,". The guitar solo was fabulous and the keyboardist made sure Richard was given justice. The Great Gig in the Sky followed the reprise of Breathe, while pictures of the late Mr. Wright appearing on Mr. Screen. The two ladies filling the role of Clare Torre did a fantastic job as always, standing ovations (well deserved) for both. Those girls really give it their all and have amazing voices.

We look up to Mr. Screen to see an animated kangaroo hopping out of bed and putting the Wish You Were Here vinyl on. And so starts the haunting sounds of Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V). A flawless, note-for-note rendition of the song is played, with Dick Parry being done more than enough justice by their saxophonist. After a picture of the late-Syd Barrett becomes visible during the fade-out, we hear the familiar droning sounds of Welcome to the Machine. This was one of the highlights of the show for me. They really got the song rockin', the crowd got into it and the ladies on back-up did a terrific job bringing the lyrics to life. Stellar job.

The kangaroo then got back up (looking a bit stoned at this point) and put on Animals. "If you didn't care...", "...and watching for pigs on the wing". And then came that familiar fade-in of acoustic guitar that is Dogs. A beautiful, spot-on rendition of the 17 minute classic. The guitar solos were there, the sound was tight and the tone was perfect. Another highlight for me. After we were done getting "dragged down by the stone!", it was time for intermission...

We find our seats to the sounds of Peter Jenner sounding off many different moons. The guitar comes in and following Nick's replicated drum fill, we're all lime and limpid-green with Astronomy Domine. This was another highlight for me. The tone was nailed to a T, the vocals were great; it just very tight and had a great groove to it. Up next was Learning to Fly, which of course had everyone air-drumming along. This is where I start to forget which order they played what songs. The iron bell was tolled, and Pink Floyd's swan song, High hopes pleasured our ears. Featuring the Floyd's very own video used during their 1994 tour, which added to the experience and authenticity even more. The lap steel was killer and the acoustic outro was as beautiful as on David Gilmour's 2006 tour. Take It Back was well-received by the crowd and had a couple of people just laying back, closing their eyes and letting the music hit them.

To my surprise, they played Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun for the second time in three years, and it was even better than when I saw them do it in 2007. The added saxophone is a treat, but the guitar solo afterwards is what makes the song for me! The guitarist really gets into it and goes nuts, and sends the crowd into a frenzy, before it returns to its slow and steady pace. They really make a good song great. The wind begins swirling and howling, and we hear the bass flicker twice. Boom boom. Bwaang bwaang. Then again. Boom boom. Bwaang bwaang. The band jumps into a hoppin' rendition of One of These Days, which features a bouncing inflated kangaroo on stage jumping in time to the song! The lap steel was killer and the drums were thumping like they were on a mission. No wonder the inflated-kangaroo was bouncing so high!

After that, what easily became my highlight of the night, by far the most under-known song they performed, but my second favorite Floyd song of all time: The Gunner's Dream. I recall screaming at the top of my lungs, once I realized, "YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". Nobody else seemed to recognize what song it was from the opening piano, but I knew. I've never heard this song live before, and I was NOT disappointed. This made my night and then some. The unbelievable vocals were absolutely nailed by their Roger, and the "DREAAAAAAAAAAAM" blended perfectly into the saxophone, almost better than on the album itself. Absolutely beautiful and I loved every second of it.

Then we faintly hear a helicopter buzzing in. Spotlights begin searching through the crowd. Any true Floyd fan knows what's on the way, and the casuals soon find out. The spotlight stops suddenly on someone. "YOU! YES, YOU! STAND STILL LADDIE!", and in comes the thumping bass of The Happiest Days of Our Lives, followed by Another Brick In The Wall (Part II), in which it seemed like everyone got a solo or a moment to shine! The keyboard solo was really amazing and he made his presence felt up there. I was blown away. And then we hear a radio... random stations, switched every two or three seconds, until the radio we all know and love is heard. Then the two acoustics do their work: Ba dana ba bann (that's the intro if you don't know).Wish You Were Here begins, and suddenly it goes from one man singing, to 2,501 singers all in tune, singing their hearts out. Pictures of the Floyd, past and present are shown. As early as the Arnold Layne promo, to as recent as Live 8. The last image of the four embracing at Live 8 almost brought tears to my eyes. A beautiful performance with a beautiful video to go with it. Not one chair had a butt in it; everyone was on their feet applauding. Then came the band introductions...

The kangaroo then got out of bed one more time. He carefully-selected a sleeve from the shelf. All white with black lines plaguing it. The Wall was going to get it's turn, and boy did it get it proper. Beginning with Hey You, followed by Is There Anybody Out There featuring stunning hand-picked acoustics, stellar vocals on Nobody Home, bringing it home with Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home and ending with Comfortably Numb. The bassist dressed up as a doctor, held a clipboard and talked to his patient in his chair. One thing you just have to hear for yourself, is how much the bassist sounds like Roger Waters. He is dead-on, no two ways about it. He gave the patient a "pin-prick" with a syringe, and it was all very cleverly done. Both solos were nailed and the band got into it like it was the last song they would ever play, and when the disco ball dropped during the second solo, the whole place lit up. Not one person wasn't in awe of the music and the accompanying visuals.

They then said their goodbyes, and walked off stage.

But we stayed. We stood on our tippy-toes screaming, yelling, cheering, whistling, clapping, et cetera. And out they came for one more song. Dressed in all black, including aviators and a trench coat, was the faux-Roger asking "Are there any paranoids in the audience?", a la the live renditions of Run Like Hell from the early '80's. He invited everyone to "have a clap", and the whole place was on it's feet for the last song of the night, Run Like Hell. The power of the lasers are really showcased here, and the Aussie's show their dedication to authenticism by bringing out a warthog from Pink Floyd's 1994 tours. This thing is huge, and the eyes still light up beat-red! It was amazing, and left everyone with sore hands and a hoarse throat from all the clapping and screaming, respectively.

All in all, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I'd put it ahead of my first two times seeing them (my 2007 review is here, I also saw them in 2008), they just keep getting better and I'm very pleasantly surprised. I'm not gonna lie, I was very surprised Money, Us and Them and Brain Damage/Eclipse didn't get played. But it did not detract from the concert one bit. If these guys come to your area, reward yourself for being a Pink Floyd fan: SEE THESE GUYS!.

  • Why God exists, and why this entity is David Gilmour!

    Out 5 2009, 8h14 por moggles

I've never experienced any great spiritual revelations in my life! I had my childhood belief in some sort of superstitious being controlling all and everything, knowing what I'm saying and thinking (a bit 1984/Brave New Worldish, heh heh), and that kind of scared/forced me into behaving like a proper and kind child who didn't cause a lot of commotion anywhere.

Of course, growing up and growing familiar with this concept of individualism and free thought (not that I knew anything closely related to those issues at the age of 12-13), it dawned upon me that every time I had done something bad, and lied about not lying to my parents, things started to shift around! Slowly over the years I grew out of any religious concept and found myself to be a non-active atheist! I've never bothered much about religion versus atheism discussions, because I believe it's each to his/her own!

Then, not too many years ago I was properly introduced to Pink Floyd and the P.U.L.S.E. DVD! It was November 6th in the year 2007, and I experienced one of those moments where you know your life will take a major turn into a new direction! It's not like completing a bachelor's or master's degree, nothing like that, altho for us music addicts, it's such a powerful experience to find something that fills a huge hole in the soul that you never knew you had! I was fairly drunk (which only enhanced the experience, being all emotional with my good friend (bromance, heh heh!)) and first heard Another Brick in the Wall, part II, which of course didn't do all that for me, because it was one of those legendary all known tracks, but then fast forwarding to Comfortably Numb and the following guitar solo (my friend's a guitar geek, I myself is more of a happy amateur multi instrumentalist) just took me off of this planet! Magic happened, and I experienced what must be the closest thing to a spiritual revelation!

Everything was so painfully obvious now! It all made sense! Screw me ten times over, this was the best thing to happen me, ever! It's right up there with me being born, because obviously I would've had to be born to appreciate that song and moment! Everything in my life had lead me to that moment, the house where my parents chose to live, and thus leading me to the same schools my good friend went to, the choosing of (the Norwegian equivalent of) high school, where I first started somewhere else, before transferring to this other school where I once again met this said friend of mine and reestablished our childhood friendship, which lead me years later to his loft apartment and this one moment with us and David Gilmour on screen playing guitar like an angel choir's multi orgasm song! It's a bit of a dirty comparison, that one, but in my mind it'd be about the best sound ever made!

It furthermore lead me into David Gilmour's solo stuff and, of course my favourite of all performances, his Echoes from the Remember That Night DVD.

I still religiously worship that song, and can conclude this with saying God exists, his name is David Gilmour!

    October 5th, 2009, mog out!
