• It's All A Bunch of Devil Shit: Jason's Take On Music

    Nov 24 2009, 20h23 por discobeef

I work at a comic book shop. My boss, Jason is a borderline conspiracy theorist who refuses to reveal his last name or age, but likes to tell me about how back in the day he was hip and saw bands like Black Flag and The Plasmatics. He'll also regrettably admit to at one point being into Gary Numan, Kraftwerk and other "simp shit" that he's supposedly forgotten after years and years of substance abuse.
When I work in the back storeroom I listen to music, and Jason usually has something odd to say about whatever's on. Despite not knowing his age, it's obvious he's grown a little crotchety over the years and the music I listen to "doesn't make any fucking sense" to him.

Here's a working list of some of the comments Jason's made about stuff I listen to. The last addition was on 11/28/09. New entries are in red.
    • Alela Diane - "The world's going to end soon. You know that, right? This woman's music is proof of it. It doesn't make any sense that someone of this day and age would make music that sounds like that. She's playing some Civil War shit or something. The world moves in circles, and when civilizations start going backwards and retreating to the past, it's a sure sign that we're almost done for."
    • Danzig - TocarInvocation - "Are they just going to play that one chord the whole damn song? This sounds like the soundtrack to someone dying of starvation. You'd hear this if you saw some evil monks wondering around a dark wood on their way to some sort of bullshit devil ritual. Yeah...this one's a real upbeat number..."
    • Descendents - TocarParents - "Are you listening to a recording of a cow groaning out in the wilderness?"
    • Hellnation - TocarRide With Me - Mocking indiscernible rabid gibberish
    • Joanna Newsom - "This sounds like Shirley Temple crossed with Gummo".
    • Korova - TocarMy Vietnam - "What the hell is he so angry about?"
    • Municipal Waste - TocarSet to Destruct - "They can't really play that fast. That's not real."
    • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - TocarThe Weeping Song - "This song would be good if it wasn't so depressing that it made me want to kill myself."
    • PJ Harvey - TocarDown By The Water - "I'd like this song if it didn't make me feel like I was going to Hell."
    • Rabies - TocarDisease Core - "That sounds like a crazy man is getting beat with a blunt object."
    • Reversal of Man - "That sounds like a woman screaming bloody murder running from an ax wielding maniac."
    • Sleep - TocarDragonaut - "This is one of the best songs ever written. It makes me want to cruise around on my bike and pick off stray cats."

  • The Misfits, The Jolts, Haddonfield

    Nov 14 2009, 20h44 por createaworld

Last Wednesday night I went down to Element, which is a local night club here in Victoria, to see The Misfits , The Jolts , and Haddonfield play. I'm a huge fan of Danzig era Misfits, and not so much the new "Jerry Only Experience" Misfits and my friend aptly named them, but I was looking forward to this show regardless.
First on were Haddonfield who are a local Victoria, BC phsycobilly band, and were a good fit as an opener for the Misfits. They all painted their faces to look like Zombies in the spirit of things, and all in all put on a good show. I couldn't tell you anything about any particular songs of their own that they played, but they did play extremely fast covers of Sweet Dreams and i shot the sherriff . I've seen them play a couple of times around town, and they always put on a good show.
The Jolts, a punk band from Vancouver, BC were on next. From beginning to end they played with Ramones-esq intensity. I had never heard them or of them before this show and I have to say that they definately made a good impression. Highlights of their set were the songs TocarDrop Dead Girl and TocarDXM. Also, near the end of their set they pulled out a good cover of Commando by the Ramones. Even though I love the Misfits, in my opinion The Jolts were the best band of the evening.
Misfits came on the stage after about a half hour wait, and as to be expected, they were extremely loud. They pulled out lots of Danzig era songs such as Attitude, Skulls, TocarDie, Die My Darling, We Are 138... etc. Also they played a few newer Jerry Only Misfits songs such as On a Saturday Night...ect. The Guitarist and the Drummer are also former members of Black Flag and they played a few Black Flag songs such as TocarRise Above which was cool. Anyway, Jerry put on a great show for a 50 year old man, I hope that I'm rocking half that hard when I'm his age. Overall, seeing the Misfits was a great experience. Was good to see all of those songs played live even if Danzig wasn't there.
At the end of the night I was drunk and my ears were ringing, Jerry Only came off the stage to meet the fans and I took off home to get at least 4 hours of sleep before work in the morning. Good show.

Fri 6 Nov – Night Eternal Above America tour

Secrets of the Moon - The reason I was willing to drive to San Antonio - did not disappoint, with their weird discordant atmosphere, and unrelenting, shapeshifting metal.

Divine Heresy - Dino Cezares does not disappoint, those nimble fingers are amazing. It's a shame I hate their songs/singer so much, and that their emotion is such bland testosterone rage.

Moonspell - I wasn't really sure whether I liked moonspell or not. There seem to be wildly varied opinions about them in the metal world at large. I dunno, I guess I have a soft spot for gothy doomy metal that doesn't overdo it. I liked the show a lot.

Sat 7 Nov – Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009

Young Widows - I missed Coliseum, but for as much as I like Coliseum's nuanced songwriting, Young Widows are much more varied, and had really memorable songs. I need to pay them more attention.

Foot Patrol - Silly songs about foot fetishism. You kinda wonder why the singer doesn't sing in a more well known band, though. His range is pretty solid.

Russian Circles - 3rd time's a charm. Finally got to see them, and they didn't disappoint. They led with Harper Lewis and Station, which already made my show.

After that, we skipped to Frank for some dogs and cocktails.

Ssion - for stumbling randomly onto a blue stage show of a band we'd never heard of, they were pretty damn fun. dancy and silly.

Death - Reunion shows of bands that you've never been into are hard to appreciate.

Yeasayer - Really excellent show. I've only flirted with listening to them, mostly on the back of Bat For Lashes' new album. They were definitely one of the better shows of the day, though.

Fucked Up - I ran over for a brief bit, and their show was absolutely as crazy as I'd heard their shows are. Their frontman cracked jokes about anti-anxiety meds and Eyehategod, and there was a ton of crowd surfing and general shirtless chaos.

Shearwater - I love Shearwater, so it was easy to choose to skip the end of Yeasayer to see them(him), but it was kinda the wrong choice. Very odd set, much more noisy than the other 1.2 times I've seen him this year.

Face to Face - lots of crowd heckling, as usual, but they put on a fun show, of what I heard.

Ratatat - long sound check, but sounded good after they got started. Opted to head to Mohawk for the option of sitting down/air conditioning/cheap beer.

Sat 7 Nov – Fun Fun Fun Afterparty

Twin Tigers - Fast and punky, definitely enjoyed their set. Will have to check them out.

The Octopus Project - Oh my god. I'd listened to them a little, but on record they come across much more chilled. The show was really energetic and electro, vs. the weird organic sounds on their albums.

    Voxtrot - lovely as always.

Sat 7 Nov – Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 2

WHY? - The show was good, they played well, and it was a setlist full of songs I like. The rain definitely dampened it, though.

Coalesce - It's hard to say whether the sound peaking and distorting helped or hurt their set. After seeing so many metal shows, I'm used to being blown away by precision, rather than blasted with noise and emotion. With the downpour, though, it was hard to really get into the mood for that sort of chaos.

We took a quick run to Target for ponchos and dry/warm clothes at this point.

HEALTH - Fortunately, the blue stage was running behind, so we walked in just as they were soundchecking. It amazes me that they would use guitars to control the sounds that they produce. I don't know if that's something they do live, or if they actually make the albums that way. Definitely left them room to spazz out and be awesome, though.

Lucero - we found our way to the front-ish during lucero's set, so we could be close for the following shows on the orange stage. I dunno, lucero is ok in small doses - their songs kinda run together even during a short 40 minute set.

Crystal Castles - The shoving and umbrella waving was too much to deal with, so we backed out of the crowd after lucero, and watched CC from farther up the hill. That was definitely the way to do it, their light show is more than their stage presence, they played mostly in darkness, occassionally silhouetted against their lights.

of Montreal - Oh my god, the costumes, the weird videos, the awesome lyrics, the ninja dancers. So much awesome.

Danzig - I had to, just because I probably wouldn't see him any other way, now that his band isn't really a band any more, it's just whoever can put up with him. I caught Twist of Cain, and some glimpses of his skin tight shirt, and called it good.
