As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies dráw fláme; As tumbled over rim in roundy wells Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell’s Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name; Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: Deals out that being indoors each one dwells; Selves—goes itself; myself it speaks and spells, Crying Whát I do is me: for that I came. Í say móre: the just man justices; Kéeps gráce: thát keeps all his goings graces; Acts in God’s eye what in God’s eye he is— Chríst—for Christ plays in ten thousand places, Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his To the Father through the features of men’s faces. I really like that track too, in fact, if someone asked me in a nutshell what Higgs' work is about I would point them to that track specifically. I've heard everything he has released as a solo artist. I see him as a guy on a very personal trip, but his music interests me less and less, the new album is well produced and not as scratchy or grating as his past output and for me he is at his best within a group but that is purely from a musical POV. It's good that you can be upfront about wanting a musical guru as I think this is where the real interest is for a lot of folks, I mean, check out the quasi-religious write-up over on the Thrill Jockey site, less about the music and more about the persona of Daniel Higgs. I see what you are saying about gnosticism but lyrically I see much more of a hindu element (and the Krishna movement, which is all about "saying God"), although he uses a lot of free play with various religious traditions substituting a word or phrase here and there.

you obviously have more insight about this than I had first guessed, I in a sense am looking for a musical guru, but I see where you have a point. I find points of "say god" (especially "Hoofprints..." and "A Message From The Beautiful") are indeed out of control, with far less restraint than on "Devotional Songs." yet I do see it all as part of the journey. kind of like coil. I also am versed in/interested in the same sort of mysticism and semi-Christian gnosticism that he is, so I might find it easier to relate to than you. but the track "Say God" floored me, I didn't see it as new age relaxation tape territory at all, which is why I had such an initially negative reaction.
