Jan 12 2011, 15h36 por dandyboy73The Dandy awards ceremony kicks of with album of the year:
Penny Sparkle by Blonde Redhead
An enthralling album from start to finish. Reminded me a lot of old-school 4AD (think Cocteau Twins or This Mortal Coil; yes it's that good), with a beautiful melancholy that seemed to suit just as well in late summer as it did in midwinter. My Plants Are Dead is my personal favourite, but it really feels like a proper 'mood' album, in the vein of, say Disintegration, ( ) or Victorialand.
Honourable mentions go to:
High Violet by The National
In any other year would have been a dead cert. I only have the last three albums, but tracks like the steely Little Faith, the jolly and downbeat at the same time Anyone's Ghost and the towering Afraid of Everyone must rank amongst the bands finest, even taking into account previous wonders such as Mistaken for Strangers or Squalor Victoria.

Jan 4 2011, 14h25 por dandyboy73I started my November blog bemoaning the lack of new stuff I'd come accross: definitely can't say the same for December. Where to start?!
I think I Heart California by Admiral Radley was the first one. When talking about the Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse album earlier in the year I mentioned how much of a shame it was that Grandaddy were no longer with us, not knowing about this. Now, I realise that Radley is a band in its own right, but with Jason Lytle taking the driving seat on most of the songs it's hard not to make the comparisons. And fucking great comparisons they are too! Both in the wordplay (I Left U Cuz I Luft U, I'm All Fucked on Beer) and the sweetly understated happysad melancholy that Grandaddy were so good at (Red Curbs, Ghosts of Syllables). Would be my find of the year if it weren't for this next lot:
My god, how did I get this far without getting into Husky Rescue?! I discovered the sublime Ship of Light earlier in the year…

~ Once I heard about a supergroup containing elements from Between the Buried and Me, Fear Before and Abigail Williams I almost couldn't believe it would happen. But hell, here it is. If you love Between the Buried and Me and Fear Before's Adam Fisher's vocals you're sold here. This is an amazing album filled with great atmospheres and walls of sound that will make you believe you're in a fantasy world. Amazing progressive metal.

1. The National – High Violet
2. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
3. Wolf Parade – Expo ‘86
4. The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang

Dez 13 2010, 17h58 por warrenwheel2010 was a year in music that many claim to be a poor year for releases, but I happen to think these individuals didn’t try hard enough. Sure, there were the big releases by Kanye, The National, and Arcade Fire that many are drooling over, but there was also a whole slew of releases less publicized or, perhaps simply, less heard that deserved recognition.
For me, 2010 was a year of music mostly focused on finding new electronic-based pop, chillwave, lo-fi, glo-fi, and witch house artists. There was a touch of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and post-rock thrown in throughout the year. You can see the most common tags of my top 50 artists from the last year below.
Let’s get to the good stuff…
