2000s
Out 20 2009, 4h51 por SpoonRiver
So I've been thinking a lot about my music listening habits in the 2000s and what albums really remind me of each year. Nothing profound here, folks... this is what I came up with...
2000
Radiohead-Kid A
This is already topping the best of the 2000s lists already. And what has been said about it for everyone else is what I have to say about it too. I knew Radiohead for The Bends and OK Computer, so this album came as a complete shock. I remember first listening to it and being completely confused. At first I tossed it aside and dismissed it. But later a good friend convinced me to give it another listen. I did. And do.
2001
David Gray-White Ladder
While it was released in the UK in 1998, It didn't hit U.S. shelves until 2001. And the album still puts me smack dab in my last year in high school.
2002
Beck-Sea Change
This album came out at a perfect time in my life as far as encompassing my current feelings on relationships. Especially
Lost Cause and
Round The Bend. It still transports me back to a time when I was really unsure about my future.
2003
My Morning Jacket-It Still Moves
Talk about being completely blown away by a performance. I saw Jacket play at a bowling alley in Omaha on the first of October that year. This album is the soundtrack to the beginning of my relationship with my now wife. This disc puts me in the happiest of happy moods and is why I still hold a special place in my heart for their tunes.
2004
Tom Waits-Real Gone
Just when I thought Waits couldn't get any more insane Real Gone is released. I was slowly going through buying all his albums at this point in time and had no idea the man was capable of such an insane sound. I still remember when I bought it. A local record store was still doing midnight sales. I remember sitting in the driveway when I got home and finishing the album. The Day After Tomorrow was such a powerful song and still is but especially at the time of its release.
2005
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals-Jacksonville City Nights
At the time I don't think I would have called this my favorite album of the year, but it's the most representative of that year of my life. I was coming to terms with what I wanted to study in college, and damnit
The End is an insanely well-written country tune. This was the year Adams was releasing 3 albums, who would have thought in that massive amount of creativity he would release his best album.
2006
Damien Jurado-And Now I'm In Your Shadow
I was working at the college radio station as a music director when this album came out and it really touched a nerve in my system. The writing was so sparse yet so powerful. I still findI Had No Intentions and Shannon Rhodes two of the greatest songs dealing with tragedy ever written.
2007
Do Make Say Think-You, You're A History In Rust
This was a powerful release from this Canadian band. I was finishing college at the time and getting married. While I probably listened to the Grinderman album more that year, this is album puts back in 2007 more.
2008
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds-DIG, LAZARUS, DIG!!!
A good friend and I drove to Denver to see Cave on the Lazarus tour, and I can honestly say it was the best show I've ever seen. Yes, better than the two Waits shows I've seen. The power in which that band creates live is the most intense thing I've ever witnessed. It's cliche to say, but I still find something new to love every time I hear this album.
2009
David Bazan-Curse Your Branches
In the fall of 2007 a solo show of Bazan's was floating around the internet and in the performance he played a lot of new songs that he said was coming out in the spring. It didn't come out until 2009, and the songs about falling out of religion are so captivating and well put. I got to see him play them live in 2008 and am going to see the final versions performed later this year. I've never been so interested in and able to see an album take shape than this disc. -
Bands I've Seen Live
Set 29 2009, 6h10 por mrstuprigge
A list of every band (that i can remember) that I have seen live. A lot of these I saw at festivals (warped, ozzfest, lollapalooza) and I don't even like the band, but whatever. I'm still surprised I haven't seen any bands 4 times.

Best 10 albums of 2008 according to Zebratan. Oh Yeah!
Jul 2 2009, 13h55 por Zebratan
I finally got around to do this list well in to 2009, but hey, better late than never.
A little note: The list is compiled only from artists/albums I listened to during 2008...This ofcourse means that several albums don't make the list, because I got the albums after the 2009 deadline (this includes Damien Jurado:Caught In The Trees and Ben Folds:Way to Normal and more).
1.
Samamidon: All Is Well
What can I say, this album is fantastic, there's not a weak song here and everything is damn close to perfect. Definitely a top 10 album within the last decade to boot.
Best 3 songs: All Is Well, saro, WIld Bill Jones
2.
American Music Club: The Golden Age
If asked at gunpoint which is my favoriteband of all time it would probably be AMC, and this album doesn't do much to change that fact. Actually this is one of their best efforts (not the best though) and by far the strongest of the two albums since their "come-back".
Best 3 songs: The Sleeping Beauty, Who You Are, The Dance
3.
Laura Marling: Alas I Cannot Swim
Another close to perfect album, though a few weaker songs doesn't quite keep up (not weak, but weaker). As a hole the album strikes a great balance between energy and quiet. The sound draws heavily on classic folk/rock/pop qualities, but does it with an overall modern feel. I think this girl is gonna do great stuff in the future.
Best 3 songs: Cross Your Fingers, Ghosts, The Captain And Hourglass
4.
Born Ruffians: Red Yellow And Blue
Oh, how I love this album. It's mad, uncontrollable and demanding as well as it is genius. I'm blown away by their generally willingness to take chances, like the often more than gutsy song structures, and their ability to get away with it.
Best 3 songs: Need A Life, Foxes Mate For Life, Hedonistic Me
5.
Kings of Leon: Only by the Night
Everybody loves Kings of Leon. Perhaps that's not entirely true, some may start to feel a bit tired with them, and the overexposure of certain songs, by now, well hey, I may be one of them myself. Tired or not though, for me it doesn't change that this is a great album. In fact I think their getting better for every album they make. I'm actually fearing the mighty greatness of their next album if they continue this run. We are probably talking deadly amounts of greatness.
Best 3 songs: Sex On Fire, Manhattan, Notion
6.
Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago
Naked Beautiful and heartfelt like few in its best moments. I wanted say that this album also has its weaker moments, but after a recent revisit I'm not sure I would agree with such a statement.
Best 3 songs: Creature Fear, re: Stacks, Lump Sum
7.
Kate Rusby: Awkward Annie
One of my favorite female vocalists and without a doubt the best contemporary folk-artist to me (don't know how contemporary she is actually. What does that even mean?). As on every album of hers, some of her songs blows me away, most notable on this album the title song which in my book was 2008 biggest "hit", and others kind of blends in with each other and doesn't leave much of an impression. Sometimes it all gets a little too quiet for my taste, but when she's great, she's great and she is more times than not on this album.
Best 3 songs: Awkward Annie, The Village Green Preservation Society, Blooming Heather
8.
The Weepies: Hideaway
One of my favorite female vocalists...damn, didn't I just say that...still it's true...Deb Talan is also one of my favorite female vocalists. Hideaway is a great album, but not the Weepies best and I wish the guy would stop singing. He's not a bad singer, he's just not Deb Talan (Weird if he was though. Food for thought right there) and it all gets a little blah when he has the lead vocals. The album does still feature enough good songs to deserve this spot on the top 10 though...
Best 3 songs: All This Beauty, Antarctica, Takes So Long
9.
The Helio Sequence: Keep Your Eyes Ahead
It may lack the mind-blowing great songs that the rest of the combatants on the list has, but as an overall it's a solid great album. I love their take on combining "real" instruments and electronic elements.
Best 3 songs: Can't Say No, You Can Come To Me, Lately
10.
South San Gabriel/Centro-matic: Dual Hawks
Will Johnsons ambitious double album effort takes the last spot on the list and without a doubt it could have been more if it had been one album only consisting only of the best songs of the two. Same old double album story it seems ...
Best 3 songs: Every Single Switch (Centro-matic), Twenty-Four (Centro-Matic), Trust To Lose (South San Gabriel)
Other great Albums that almost made the cut, and I could honestly say that every one of these actually deserves to be on the list, but there just isn't enough room. (especially Ron Sexsmith who I actually forgot)
Ron Sexsmith: Exit Strategy of The Soul
Shawn Smith: The Diamond Hand
Madrugada: Madrugada
Hayden: In Field & Town
The Dø: A Mouthful
Willard Grant Conspiracy: Pilgrim Road
Elbow: The Seldom Seen Kid
Lykke Li: Youth Novel -

With both eyes closed I blew out his windows
A cheap shot I know but someone had to do it
It isn't like he deserves it that's easy for you to say
He's not our kind, he's not your type
Just look into his eyes
On my side of town
We let the lights go down
Get out our knives and go for a long drive
I'm nothing special, a yard sale collectable for your table
Eventually you'll too gather dust like the rest of us
Left out to rust
Tell me tongith, can we be magnetic
Lightning will strike and all of us will get in
Now that I'm social I'm at your disposal
A chair at the table
Eventually you'll too gather dust like the rest of us
Left out to rust
/ // // / // / // / /
Northbound open, use left hand lane
I drive to a place where no one knows who I am
Stop lights broken, tail lights out
I speed without caution on a road made of ice
My body an engine, my car is a train
I don't feel guilty for the hurt or pain
Telephone message we all ring twice
I speed without caution on a road made of ice

Mix Of The Month - May 2009
Jun 11 2009, 23h42 por jurlacher
Well here we are again. A little later than usual, but given all the crazy animal stuff I put up a few weeks ago I felt it would be best to space things out. That and I'm really, really lazy. A little busy, too, for that matter - between the practicum, research, and Ruth's stupid work shift I haven't had nearly as much slacking time as I'd like. I'll manage, though.
May wasn't a particularly exciting month in terms of music, but luckily that gave me the chance to catch up on the excess from preceding months. My mix comes in like a lion, then shifts into a lion who likes folk/rootsy music, and goes out like a lion who likes electronic-ish stuff. I apologize for that terrible description. Just imagine a lion in a cowboy hat and a raver lion and you'll have some idea of what I was going for. Unfortunately I didn't think of those images before making the cover art! Maybe next time. Speaking of next time, June's going to be a pretty excellent month for music so I'm excited about that mix. Yes, I get excited about mixes. I'm that cool. Hopefully the rest of June is also excellent!
Until then, enjoy!
