Dabrye (an alias of Ann Arbor’s Tadd Mullinix) is best known for creating head-nodding beats with saw-tooth bass lines and a keen eye to forward-thinking production. With support from both the hip-hop underground and the electronic music press, he has earned a place in URB’s Next 100 and XLR8R’s Top 100 albums, among other accolades. Dabrye’s trilogy began with One/Three in
2001, which was followed by the Instrmntl mini-album for Scott Herren’s (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label. Both releases earned glowing reviews for their handmade rhythmic style and minimalist execution. 2006’s Two/Three LP steps up the beatmaking ingenuity and spotlights Mullinix’s favorite underground MCs, including Doom, J Dilla, Vast Aire, and Wildchild to create a major statement for the new Hip-Hop sound of Detroit.

You obviously haven't heard flying lotus' july heat album - it's chill as fuck. Based on 1983 alone, I actually didn't care too much for lotus. After hearing July Heat, Raw Cartoons, and Reset, he's pretty much jumped to my top 5. Dabrye's solid, but his beats just sound rudimentary as hell compared to some other electronic-hip hop producers (caural, lotus, etc). Each to their own, I guess.

talkin' about the beats, i dare to say that i don't really get what you guys praise flying lotus for, cause he gets me tired in a minute. most of reset and that game over rmx are nauseating, literally. dabrye's not flawless too, some pieces annoy with no mc's, but not in that way, it's bearable, you can breathe, and i like his innovative approach overall. suffocating with fly lo though, sorry.

I think it's a little of both to be honest. Some of dabrye's beats on 2/3 were good, but not good enough to hold their own for 4-minute run times w/o rap assistance. The dilla, big tone, guilty, and a.g. tracks were fire. And despite the pretense, I think kadence, invincible, and finale had dope flows. Dude should have just chosen better emcees IMO. Vast Aire, DOOM, and a few others blew it.
