Jego pierwszy singiel "Got You On My Mind" ukazał się w holenderskiej wytwórni DAP w 1995 roku.
    1. Wydałeś swój pierwszy album "Sound Of The Street" w wytwórni Aphex Twina - Rephlex. Jak wyglądał twój pierwszy kontakt z tą wytwórnią? Jak się tam znalazłeś?
Zawsze byłem wielkim fanem Rephlex. Wysyłałem im swoje demo. Zareagowali dopiero gdy wysłałem swojego pierwszego singla wydanego w Holandii w Dance Arena Productions - "Got You On My Mind".
    2. A co z początkami Breakin' Records? To chyba pierwszy label w Europie wydający electro-bass. Kiedy i dlaczego zdecydowałeś się go stworzyć?
To był najważniejszy argument by stworzyć własny label.
    4. Powiedz nam coś o następnych wydawnictwach Breakin' Records.
Następne wydawnictwo to będzie epka DMX Krew.
Wrzucić niezbyt udolnie wyprodukowaną muzykę do sieci?
    9. Jakie są Twoje typy w 2009 roku wśród nowych producentów?
Chciałbym to wiedzieć... Jeśli chodzi o elektronikę to moi ulubieni producenci to Heinrich Mueller i Aphex Twin
    11. Będziesz grał w marcu w Polsce. We Wrocławiu i w Łodzi.
Techno, Electro, Acid House, trochę Synthpopu z lat osiemdziesiątych i Hip-Hopu.
    12. Dzięki za wywiad i do zobaczenia w Polsce.
    Dzięki!

  • Smiles With New Electro Styles

    Jan 26 2009, 1h28 por Harringay

Lately, my taste in electronic music is changing. For a long time I've confined my ears to, for lack of a better word, 'serious' electronic music. What I mean by that is deep, thought-provoking, personal music where it would feel more appropriate to sit and listen through headphones than pump it up and dance throughout the house. I'm not really a fan of this tag '' as 'Intelligent Dance Music' would suggest that other genres are not intelligent. I'd prefer to think of it as my friend once described; electronic music you can't dance to.

But now, I'm starting to find the 'fun' in music that I've subconsciously neglected. I've came to a realisation that not all music has to sound 'intelligent' to be good, and sometimes obviousness can be even more powerful in music than unexpected twists or creative embellishments.
I may be saying nothing new to you, and I know I've certainly heard similar words spoken before, but as it's a new development for me I thought I'd voice it (after all, that's what these journals are REALLY for, aren't they?!).

So I'd like to share with you just some of the artists and albums that have converted my way of listening, and I'd welcome any recommendations you may have for me in response.

The Knife - Deep Cuts (2003)

Best to start from the start. Deep Cuts has been in my collection for a while now and it was pretty much the beginning of my branching out to more vocal based music. Karin Dreijer's voice and style is so unique that she immediately caught my attention. Everyone should know Heartbeats but my favourite track after that would be We Share Our Mother's Health off their intensely engaging album Silent Shout.

    Other superb tracks :
We Share Our Mothers' Health (Ratatat Remix) | What Else Is There? by Röyksopp, featuring Karin Dreijer.

Rex the Dog - The Rex The Dog Show (2008)

I heard the Heartbeats Remix off this album sometime in 2007 (a while before the albums release) and having not heard of Rex the Dog, I foolishly thought it would be the highlight of the album. Oh, how I was wrong! Nearly every track has now crept into my favourite iTunes playlists and I strongly regard it as one of the best electro albums of 2008. It's such a favourite of mine that I could write a whole journal about it, so I'll leave it at this: If you check out only one thing from here, make it this album!

    What's Good?
Gecko | Prototype | The Knife: Heartbeats (rex the dog remix) | I Can See You, Can You See Me? | Itchy Scratchy - Fucking ALL of it!

    Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (2008)

I've always had a soft spot for the 80s and these guys get it so right. I remember first hearing Needy Girl off She's In Control in a club and I mistakenly thought it was a track from the 80s that I overlooked! They've masterfully reinvented the spirit of that era and keep it incredibly melodic with simple textures that often remind me of Prince's arrangements. Seriously, every track on this album has a hook, and oh yes, it will catch you.

    My choice tracks are :
Fancy Footwork | Bonafied Lovin' (Tough Guys) | Call Me Up

Various Artists - This Is Not the 80s (2002)

Keeping with the 80s theme, 'This Is Not the 80s' is a Nu-Wave Electro compilation that I've discovered quite late (released 2002), but it sounds so fresh that I can't see it ageing for many years. The lengthy 2 disc album features some amazing remixes of 80s classics like Sweet Dreams (originally Eurythmics, remix by Miss Kittin & The Hacker) and also some great contemporary originals, with a full throttle 80s vibe of course. I'm not normally a fan of compilations, but the driving motivation throughout makes for a more than worthy exception.

    One to check out :
17 Ways To Break My Heart by DMX Krew
    also : Sweet Dreams Remix

    MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (2007)

Now, this may seem like a strange album to be featured alongside all this electro, but there are two tracks in particular that I like, well actually, LOVE. They are Kids and Electric Feel. The rest I don't really bother listening to.

Kids was the first MGMT song I heard and it's always disappointed me that none of their other tracks sound anything like it. It's quite an important track for me as well; listening to It obsessively made me realise how unnecessarily serious my listening habits were. It's such a happy tune! <3

    Lo-Fi-Fnk - Boylife (2006)

'Happy' just isn't a strong enough word for this album. This is at it's gayest, and I'm loving it. The highlights are so high that the Kitsuné synths and junior vocals have me smiling almost instantly, and the lows are the type of sing-along that 4 AM was made for. It feels like genuine naïveté, undergirded by a healthy dose of enthusiasm, and comes out sounding like Daft Punk with hearts.
    Love it.

    Pick me up's :
Adore | What's on Your Mind | Change Channel | Steppin' Out | Heartache | The End - That's almost all of it!

Evil Nine - They Live! (2008)

Three words to describe this album : Stomping electro horror!
They Live! has to be one of the most uniquely driven conceptual albums I've heard in a while. Some tracks feel like they could have easily fallen into an electro house vibe if it wasn't for the unquestionable and creepy undertones of a pounding rock menace. A surprising like for me, but something this fascinating should not go unheard.

    Get these freaks on :
All The Cash feat. El-P | They Live! | Dead Man Coming feat. Toastie Taylor

    The Presets - Apocalypso (2008)

From stomp to pump, Apocalypso is one of those albums that will get you and your mates up and ready for a night out on the rinse. It's fist-pumping, bassline throbbing, hip-grinding output is all compiled into a perfect flowing album that seems to be one classic after another. This kind of piston-charged electro is surely meant for the dancefloor, but I find myself shaking my arse uncontrollably everytime I stick it on in the house. For me, this is also one of the best electro albums of 2008.

    Get these pumpin' :
Kicking and Screaming | My People | Talk Like That

Telefon Tel Aviv - Immolate Yourself (2009)

To finish off this journal entry, I'll leave you with my most recent indulgence. For many, Telefon Tel Aviv's newly released album Immolate Yourself has been a shock. Their previous releases are considered to be high quality examples of 'I.D.M.', yet their newest instalment has more elements of and than any T.T.A. album. In fact, many liken it to a mixture of Apparat and M83. While some dislike the new direction, I absolutely love it. It compliments perfectly my new found listening habits and I'm sure I'll be listening to this album a lot more in 2009.

    The Goods :
The Birds | Helen Of Troy | Stay Away From Being Maybe

    The End

For those who read all that, thanks for reading! If you have any recommendations I would love to hear them, or even just your opinions on the music.

    Thanks!

    - Carl

  • Best of 2008

    Jan 10 2009, 13h05 por sharevari

I think I must have listened to less music this year as I didn't have as many candidates this time, so I'm going to limit it to 50 tracks.

The top 50 songs I listened to in 2008

    1. Jens Lekman - Sipping on the Sweet Nectar (Bogdan Irkük's Love Nectar Mix) (2008)
I think the reason I like this song so much is that it manages to combine a huge number of the aspects that I appreciate the most in music. Great pop feeling, a fantastically lush production, rich melancholic chord progressions, an insistent dance beat, sweeping strings, arpeggiated synths, italo disco flourishes and a beautiful vocal. Wait for the drop to almost complete silence at 4:57. Breathtaking.

    2. E.R.P. - Vox Automaton (2007)
Sleek, futuristic and absolutely sublime modern electro. The pads that come in at 1:56 just lifts it off this planet and straight up to heaven. Don't think I will ever tire of this one.

    3. Familjen - TocarHuvudet i sanden (2007)
This song made me want to jump up and down with a silly smile on my face more than anything else I heard this year. So unashamedly uplifting! Somehow missed this track last year but after hearing it live at Familjen's gig at the Old Blue Last this year I was instantly hooked.

    4. The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke remix) (2008)
This feels very similar in spirit to the Jens Lekman number at the top of the chart as it's also a discofied remix of an indie artist. And again, this is absolute bittersweet pop perfection, gorgeously arranged and produced. I don't know what it is about Erlend Øye, but I almost never like any of his original productions; put his voice in a dance context however and I will almost invariably love it. 2005's winner, TocarCriticize by Marco Passarani also featured Øye's vocals.

    5. Tobiah - I Don't Really Exist (2006)
    6. Tobiah - I Love Your Music (2006)
There's something about the strange resonating synthesized voice on these tracks that I just love. Gorgeous production around it too with chunky slo-mo house beats and lovely 8-bit melodies.

    7. Fliehende Stürme - Lunaire (2008)
This is the standout track from a new discovery this year. Serious and earnest German goth-punk-pop, and not at all what I normally listen to, but for some reason it's totally amazing.

    8. Slagsmålsklubben - TocarSponsored By Destiny (2007)
Maximum synthesizer joy overload! Crazy over-compressed arpeggiator action!

    9. Tuxedomoon - In a Manner of Speaking (1985)
This quirky but beautiful avant-ballad had somehow passed me by until now.

    10. Cloetta Paris - TocarDid We Collide? (2008)
In the absence of any new Sally Shapiro material this year, I had to contend myself with Cloetta Paris's debut album instead. This is a glorious electropop number with the best male choir ever caught on tape. The cutest lyrics of the year too.

    11. Fall of Saigon - She Leaves Me All Alone (1983)
Super lo-fi early 80s French minimal synth/post-punk recorded entirely with toy instruments, but which nevertheless packs a serious emotional punch.

    12. Glass Candy - TocarLife After Sundown (2007)
Prior to 2008, my feelings towards Glass Candy were somewhat lukewarm, but after seeing them live at Cargo, they really won me over and I started tracking down more of their music. This one is a stripped-down drum machine & strings stomper of which I will never get enough!

    13. E.R.P. - TocarLament Subrosa (2007)
More glacial goodness in the same vein as Vox Automaton.

    14. Lime - Babe, We're Gonna Love Tonight (1982)
Oh my, the cheese factor of this is off the scale, but that's probably why I love it so much. Probably the happiest (or most annoying, depending on your point of view) song ever made. :)

    15. Maximilian Skiba - TocarApple Of Disco.Rd (2006)
I'm really impressed by this young Polish producer, almost everything he puts out is great. Super-classy string-led neo disco that rocks hard.

    16. Orgue Electronique - Die Liebe Ist Die Größte Kraft (2005)
The opener from the ultra-bleak Stalingrad Vol. 2 compilation is a muted and beautifully resigned but hopeful composition. By far the best thing I've ever heard Orgue Electronique do.

    17. Maximilian Skiba - TocarViolet Carnation (2006)
There is not much to tell this apart from Apple of Disco.RD, but it's equally spine tingling so had to be included. I actually enjoy this a lot more than most disco that came out back when it all happened.

    18. Starcluster Feat. Elke B. - Jusqu'à La Fin (2008)
Fragile synthpop that sounds like it's from 1981 with whispery female vocals in French. What more could you ask for?

    19. Heartbreak - Akin To Dancing (2008)
I thought Heartbreak's debut album was a mixed bag but this is one track that I adore whole-heartedly! An amazingly successful attempt at capturing everything that's great about italo.

    20. Fixmer/McCarthy - Banging Down Your Door (2008)
A slight departure for FM towards a more melodic sound, and on this track it all comes together beautifully. What Depeche Mode ought to sound like these days.

    21. Kleerup - TocarTower Of Trellick (2008)
    22. Mr. Clavio - Keine Gnade Für Die Sechste (2005)
    23. Jesu - Friends Are Evil (2004)
    24. Kleerup Feat. Neneh Cherry - Forever (2008)
    25. Backlash - Lodestar (2006)
    26. Asobi Seksu - TocarRed Sea (2007)
    27. Arvid Tuba - The Seasons Are Sitting On Chairs (?)
    28. Vanessa Van Basten - TocarFloaters (2006)
    29. Glass Domain - TocarInterlock (1991)
    30. Vanessa Van Basten - TocarDole (2006)
    31. Hjarnidaudi - March (2006)
    32. Clashing Egos - Aminjig Nebere (I Trusted You) (Joakim's Afrobot mix) (2004)
    33. Tracey Thorn - TocarKing's Cross (Hot Chip Remix) (2007)
    34. Pride and Fall - Retrospect (2006)
    35. Dream Disco - Take Me Home (2007)
    36. Theo Parrish feat. Alena Waters - Soul Control (2007)
    37. Frank Bolero - Tocarklkon (2007)
    38. Quazar - The Seven Stars (1990)
    39. Nu NRG - Bonsai (2004)
    40. Pink Turns Blue - I Coldly Stare Out (1987)
    41. Fliehende Stürme - Tobende Welt (2008)
    42. Victrola - Maritime Tatami (1983)
    43. Sally Shapiro - Jackie Jackie (Spend This Winter With Me) (Dyylan's Subzero Nocturne) (2008)
    44. Oasis - Oasis Thirteen (2004)
    45. Fliehende Stürme - Zuflucht (2008)

  • 50 Questions About My Top 50.

    Mai 12 2008, 22h44 por Glejs

    1. How did you get into 29?

I probably found out about DMX Krew because of a friend. Great music.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?

Can't remember.. but the first album I heard by Club 8 was "Nouvelle", and it was the song "Me Too" that did it for me.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33?

Ruyichi Sakamoto (feat. David Sylvian) - world citizen

    "There goes one baby's life
    It's such a small amount
    She's un-American
    I guess it doesn't count

    Six thousand children's lives
    Were simply thrown away
    Lost without medicine
    Inside of thirty days

    In the New York harbour
    Where the stock's withheld
It was the price we paid
    For a safer world

    World is suffering
    World is suffering
    World is suffering
    World citizen

    In Madhya Pradesh
    Where they're building dams
    They're displacing native people
    From their homes and lands

    So they hunger strike
    Cos they believe they count
    To lose a single life
    Is such a small amount

    In the name of progress
    And democracy
The concepts represented in name only

    His world is suffering
    Her world is suffering
    Their world is suffering
    World citizen

    World citizen

    And the buildings fall
    In a cloud of dust
    And we ask ourselves
    How could they hate us?
Well, when we live in ignorance and luxury
    While our super powers practice
    Puppet mastery

    We raise the men
    Who run the fascist states
    And we sell them arms
    So they maintain their place

    We turn our backs
    On the things they done
    Their human rights record
    And the guns they run

    His world is suffering
    Her world is suffering
    Their world is suffering
    World citizen

    My world is suffering
    Your world is suffering
    Our world is suffering
    World citizen

    Who'll do away with flags?
    Who'll do us proud?
Remove the money from their pockets
    Scream dissent out loud?

Cos god ain't on our side
    The shoe won't fit
And though they think the war is won
That's not the last of it

    Disenfranchised people
    Need their voices heard
And if no one stops to listen
    Lose their faith in words

    And violence rises
    When all hope is lost
    Who'll embrace the human spirit
    And absorb the cost?

    Not one life is taken
    In my name
    In my name

    His world is suffering
    Her world is suffering
    Their world is suffering
    World citizen

    My world is suffering
    Your world is suffering
    Our world is suffering
    World citizen"

    4. How did you get into 49?

Timbaland is a great hip hop producer, I think it's because of his work with Missy Elliott I started to appreciate his beats & rythms.

    Goldfrapp - TocarPilots

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?

The music of Chromeo don't make people sad. But if I have to choose, it's got to be "Needy Girl". Lyrics shows what a pain in the ass girls can be in relationships.

A Tribe Called Quest - TocarBonita Applebum.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?

when i loved you, my radio
you promised me so much, but now you've changed
you always played my favorite songs
    those robot-disco marathons
inspired me to buy my first machines

    you've changed and i don't know why
so strange you never said goodbye

i felt betrayed, and so i turned
    to television, yet i've yearned
for you, my radio, you complete me
you used to play my favorite tracks
    those basslines and synthetic claps
oh, radio, i miss those sounds the most

    you've changed
    you've changed
    you've changed and i don't know why
