  • Ooh La La :: Sounds of Sexy

    Mai 2 2009, 14h02 por hdsander

I bothered many of my friends with the question for the sexiest songs ever during the last days. I thank you all for the lots of recommendations I got. The result is an awesome, very eclectic mix of sexy tunes. Starting with the 1969 song of Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg (that was a scandalous piece music at that time in Europe and deeply impressed this guy at age of 15) the tunes are ordered generally by the release year of my albums, no ranking. Enjoy!

  • Bon Iver hosts 'rage', 18/04/09

    Abr 17 2009, 14h42 por arrell

    I didn't watch it =(

Seeing that putting up Bullet for my Valentine's playlist on the Australian music video program attracted some interest, I think I'll make it a habit of mine. It's definitely cool seeing what musicians pick to broadcast, and that warrants me expending some energy to share the playlist with random last.fmers. Since these things take a while to format, I might reserve it to popular artists or artists that personally interest me.

For the unfamiliar, rage shows new music videos on Friday night, then gets a guest host to pick videos of his/her/their choice on Saturday night. This week, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is on the hot seat. As the program has yet to air (playlists for the Saturday night show are released Friday noon), I'll most likely edit any comments from Vernon in afterward, as well as my own thoughts.

    The playlist is as follows:
    Gillian Welch - TocarRevelator
    Fiona Apple - TocarShadowboxer
    Jeff Buckley - TocarLast Goodbye
    Tom Waits - Hold On
    Tom Waits - TocarDowntown Train
Tom Waits - Lie To Me
Bob Log III - TocarBoob Scotch
    Björk - TocarPagan Poetry
    Björk - TocarHuman Behaviour
    Jay-Z - 99 Problems
    Spoon - The Underdog
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - TocarThe Impression That I Get
    Feist - 1234
    Pavement - Shady Lane
Pavement - Father to a Sister of Thought
    Pavement - Gold Soundz
    blink-182 - TocarAdam's Song
    Lambchop - TocarIs a Woman
    Josh Rouse - Quiet Town
    Radiohead - Creep
    Radiohead - TocarParanoid Android
    Radiohead - TocarMy Iron Lung
    Patty Griffin - TocarRain
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Bring It On
    Phantom Planet - TocarLonely Day
Alicia Keys - TocarIf I Ain't Got You
    Leona Lewis - TocarBleeding Love
D'Angelo - TocarUntitled (How Does It Feel)
    Kanye West - TocarLove Lockdown
    Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says
Busta Rhymes - Turn It Up, Fire It Up
Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville - Don't Know Much
Bruce Springsteen - TocarStreets of Philadelphia
    Tool - TocarSober
    Tool - TocarPrison Sex
Rage Against the Machine - TocarBulls on Parade
Rage Against the Machine - TocarKilling in the Name
    Eminem - When I'm Gone
Eminem - TocarThe Way I Am
Bon Iver - The Wolves (Act I and II)
    Bon Iver - For Emma
Bon Iver - Creature Fear (live on Triple J tv)
Bon Iver - The Park (Feist cover, live on Triple J tv, 'Like a Version' segment)

To see the music videos that show after Vernon's stint, see here .

    Visit rage

Note: I've no idea how those outside Australia can watch this show. A quick google search brought up nothing. You'll sometimes see the guest host's song introductions on youtube, but only for select artists.

MUSIC JOURNALISM - last updated 19 June 09

He was warm and fun, as were his bandmates and it made for quite the hour. His hair seemed to be in the same state of greasiness as our own heads of hair so we felt immediate kinship, but then felt nothing at all like him because there’s more scary good pop genius in that young man than is legal. He’s nothing like anyone.
    — Daytrotter on Sondre Lerche

Toronto’s Alice Glass and Ethan Fawn made a debut that sounded like an army of Space Invaders running amok on crack. It was as violent as music gets.
    — Times Online UK on Crystal Castles' debut

He's one giant step ahead of his audience, just like always, and though his talent and character were there for all to see, who knew he'd turn out this heady or beatwise? Maybe his mom, or his manager - a woman and an African American, respectively. There's plenty of Neptunes records, but none as nice; plenty of Timbaland records, but none as sexy. Tagging the lead track, he sums up his growth curve in six simple words that, somehow, no one ever thought of before: "Gentlemen, good night. Ladies, good mornin'." Then, as if he wasn't already in the door, he gooses the play with a relieved, knowing, friendly chuckle. [...] He can still make *NSYNC records if he wants - the Brian McKnight mawk proves it. But if he does, it'll be out of the goodness of his heart.
    — Robert Christgau's A- review of Justified

Totally committed, D'Angelo betrayed neither weakness nor ego - and gave so much Thursday that Friday he canceled with a sore throat I absolutely believe was the truth. He was R&B Jesus, and I'm a believer. Travel to another city to see him now.
    — Robert Christgau in Village Voice

Elbow (extra o's omitted only so I can link the artist name):

Decamping to a nearby pub, Elbow sit drinking pints and swapping stories, sounding more like excited teenagers dissecting a life-changing night out than near-middle-aged men. They talk of mates who have won thousands from the bookies after backing them to win, and of impromptu standing ovations in last night's drinking holes. They compare the hundreds of congratulatory text messages they've received - from the one sent by a friend who broke his sofa jumping on it when Jools Holland announced live on BBC2 that Elbow had won, to the one from former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke that simply read: "Manchester is proud of you."
    - The Guardian on the 2008 Mercury Prize

There's nothing wrong with honest to goodness, bubblegum pop music. I'll tell you what I can't stand - insincerity, like someone mournfully singing about love without understanding anything about it. Its just horseshit for the masses; it makes me want to strangle them to death. I heard this woman on Radio 4 today called Amanda Ghost; she co-wrote "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt. I heard her interviewed on Woman's Hour, and she got asked, "Why do people hate that song?", and her answer was that English people hate success - go to New York, she said, they love it. Now that's just nonsense - I don't hate that song because it's successful, I hate that song because it's the devil's shit. It's taking up space in my brain that better songs could be using instead.
    — Guy Garvey in musicOMH

It’s amazing what you can make yourself into to avoid truths and it's amazing how transparent it usually is.
    — on TocarThe Bones of You

It's easy, if you're a poet, to write complex verses like, "I'm coming after you like VWXYZ." Just think about that. It's like, "Yo, V does come after U! That's fucking crazy!" My mind thinks like that all the time, coming up with crazy clever metaphors and rhymery thingies.
    — will.i.am on his creative process

Q: If you could tour with any band/artist and open for them who would it be?
A: I'd always wanted to open for Nickel Creek, and came close a few times, but they've retired and moved on to solo projects, alas.
    — Vienna Teng. DO I NEED TO TELL YOU HOW THIS MADE ME FEEL. NO I DO NOT.

LAist: Maybe someday you can release an album with reimaginations of your early work.

VT: I was just thinking that might be fun. Some of it would be really embarrassing, because I did go through really long period where I was very melodramatic. Even if they were just piano compositions, all the song titles were really emo, such as "Sorrow's Melody" or "The Mists of Time."
    — honestly. how are you still my favorite.

The joy and wonder of Chris Thile in various interviews:

I travel a lot and I see all these little kids with Hannah Montana suitcases and shirts that say I’m a Rock Star. Hannah Montana is not a rock star. Hannah Montana is a figment of some executive’s imagination - a person who knows nothing about music. They know everything about money and more power to them, that’s an art in and of itself...but it’s shocking to me. [This] is my area and I am particularly susceptible to getting all riled up. Every now and then I do succumb to the temptation to read things about me and I sometimes come off as pretentious. I really don’t mean to be pretentious, it’s just something that is on my mind and it starts with how music is presented to kids and the Disney Channel’s version just leads nowhere.
    — in the audio-transcribed one with four billion typos

I can't even talk about [Bach] because I'll just cry. I put it on and will sit reverently in front of it for however long I can before the world drags me back. I'll play it, and I'll even naïvely attempt to imitate him compositionally or at least try to pick up some of the intent. He was such an intentful composer. A greater artist cannot be found in the history of the world.
    — with Jambase

I want music to explode out of me; I don't want it to trickle. My favorite kind of music in the world is the kind of music I feel like might have killed the person who wrote it if they hadn't got it out. I don't want to make music that doesn't demand me to make it.
    — with Barnes & Noble

CT: This is the second track off Of Montreal's EP...called Icons, Abstract Thee, "Voltaic Crusher," in which he says, "Please, please, please, God, don't be a bastard. She could use someone nice for a change," and I guess he's referring to his lost love, and he hopes next time, she gets someone a little more together than he is.

The A.V. Club: You seem to find that humorous. (HAHAHAHAHA.)

CT: I just love the guy's song titles, and that he'll say things like that. I've tried playing it in the van, to little or no avail. Nobody else really enjoys it. I actually eat a lot of shit for my Of Montreal fanship.
    — discussing what's on his iPod

I think [Radiohead] is the best band in the world, and I'm amazed at their ability to push and pull at convention and be relevant for a huge number of people. They're not throwing fastballs right down the middle of the plate. Those are some nasty cutters and things. And people are going for it. It helps me fight my natural cynicism as regards to pop culture, which I get very depressed about at times—a gigantic portion of this country feels like Fall Out Boy is an acceptable thing to listen to.
    — with Village Voice

I guess I have to be really honest, right? I heard about him a few years ago and got into this album, but I've never been an active M. Ward listener. My opinion of him is, it's kind of like just eating a random sandwich. It's just there.
    — Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear on "Transfiguration, No. 2"

AVC: Wilco sold out. Why can't you?

ED: Yeah, but for Volkswagen. It's different. It's so weird, because it comes down to, "Do I personally support the company?" But then it's also bullshit, because like, let's say we do a Nike commercial, which is fine, but they probably use sweatshops somewhere. It's all equally fucked-up. But some have a more visible reputation for being a bad company, like Wal-Mart or McDonald's. And Hummers. Like, "You will be chastised on blogs for life if you give them your song." I wouldn't give it to them anyway, because Hummers are dumb. But I wish, like, a banana company would ask us to do something. Something innocent, like a nice fruit commercial, or Yoplait. Like Animal Collective and their crayons commercial. That would be nice.
    — THE AMAZINGNESS OF THIS INTERVIEW, IT NEVER ENDS
