Gary Numan

The best old track was 'Observer' by Gary Numan. I was a teenage Numanoid and it's pretty obvious that his synthiness has stuck with me since then in the music I make myself. Where would synthpop, electro and all their modern derivatives be without Numan's huge influence? 'Observer' is just perfect.

I have about 5 or 6 Cymande songs now, im really starting to like them. As with lots of bands i now really like, i was indifferent at first.

I think they are the true sucessors to The Meters in my mental funk-map. I dont really know of many bands funk bands that have the same feel as these two, i dont know how to describe it. Its a different sounding funk music to that of Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown, or of disco style stuff like Parliament/ Funkadelic. Or jazz funk stuff like Herbie Hancock.

Can anybody recommend me some stuff similar to the meters? Does anyone else see these distinctions?

On monday i came home, to have a bunch of my old stuff thrust in to my arms. My parents were cleaning out the attic ...

I found a bunch of old CDs, including Linkin Park! It was the first album i ever bought myself. I think im going to have to start using the 'guilty pleasures' tag.

Also, some metalhead friends came over for a few drinks, and insisted on playing their music. Put me in the mood for metal, something i havnt been in for months. Possibly years. Have just downloaded Tears Don't Fall. I remember standing in the pit at download festival, while identical swarms of sweaty men/boys in black shirts jump on top of each other, and quite liking it. The song that is.

I justified the regression by downloading The Beastie Boys,The Beach Boys, Cymande, The Birthday Party, The Jesus Lizard, Tom Waits, Eels, Fatboy Slim, Television, Can, Lake of Dracula and Patti Smith. I have decided this more than balances out the embarrismentometer.
