  • 30 questions about my overall top 30 artists

    Ago 7 2009, 12h22 por kaese-chan

    1. How did you get into 29?
Into iwrestledabearonce? Their video of TocarTastes Like Kevin Bacon was sent to me by, I think, a Japanese friend. And I was astonished by their greatness and turned into the huge fan I am now. (They're actually my third most favourite band ever.)

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Lostprophets... whew, that is a hard one. I think it was TocarA Town Called Hypocrisy on MTV. It's such a catchy tune!

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
None of Hennes Bender's actually. I just really like him as a stand-up comedian.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
That's easy. For Hopesfall, my favourite song would be either TocarThe End of an Era or TocarEast Of 1989; Battle Of The Bay. Both so beautiful.

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
Whoo, Killswitch Engage, there you go. I really really like My Curse because there are loads of memories tied to that song. But I like so many songs by KSE, I couldn't really pick one in particular.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
By The Number Twelve Looks Like You? Ah man, hard one again. They certainly have many upbeat songs that make you bounce up and down in your chair, but "happy" doesn't really describe the feeling. Although... well I guess their cover of My Sharona actually hits the spot.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?
My favourite Primus song is TocarTommy the Cat.

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Kagrra, - Shopping in a Visual Kei fan store in Kyoto, Japan.

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
I have no 19, just two 18s, Incubus and Jamiroquai. I really like Incubus' old Funk Metal stuff, Fungus Amongus and the likes. That makes me happy. And Jamiroquai is similarly funky, I probably like TocarCanned Heat the most.

    10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
No 25 again. I saw Dir en grey (24) once at Rock am Ring and it was awesome. I'd do it again, but they never play near my place. And although I love The Band Apart, they have never played outside Japan and I don't know if there will be any opportunity for me to see them, like, ever.

    11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
BROWNOUT - That was El Narco, I suppose.

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?
    Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts.

    13. Who is a favorite member of 1?
The Fall of Troy's Thomas Erak, of course.

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
The Pinker Tones - sadly not.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Symmetry - having two completely different artists (one Hip-Hop and the other Sludge/Doom Metal) who both make great music.

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?
    Nell - Tocar어차피 그런 거.

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Jamiroquai - Synkronized and Incubus - Fungus Amongus.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?
    means - TocarConnected.

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Minus the Bear - TocarPachuca Sunrise.

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine.

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?
Plastic Tree - バリア. Was my all-time favourite song for a long time.

    22. What is you favorite song by 8?
    Rolo Tomassi - TocarCurby.

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Nasum - never have and sadly never will.

    24. What is the worst song by 12?
Russian Circles don't have any bad songs.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
I think it was The Jonbenét's Dramarama or Behold, the White Whore.

    26. What is you favorite album by 7?
Underoath - The Changing of Times, although it was They're Only Chasing Safety previously.

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?
So hard for The Band Apart. I think it may be Fuel.
For Dir en grey, it would be OBSCURE.

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
    Saosin - TocarYou're Not Alone.

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?
Cutting Pink with Knives - Populuxxe.

    30. How many albums do you own by 20?
ART-SCHOOL's Flora only, I wish I had all of them, for ART-SCHOOL is such a great band and I love almost all their songs.

  • Favorite Albums of my Top 30 (Overall that is)

    Mar 29 2009, 0h28 por jazzycattime

I have a lot of free time today.
I do not want to work on music.
I do not feel like looking for somewhere to go.
I do not want to work on my set list.

    1. Melt-Banana

Hardest one of all. Stuck between Cell-Scape and Scratch Or Stitch.

    2. Discordance Axis

    The Inalienable Dreamlessness

    3. The Locust

    Plague Soundscapes, hands down.
Such a fucking shame that their development went in the direction it did after Safety Second.

    4. Bubblegum Octopus

HA. I hate having me up here...
It will be Sparkle Fountain when it's done.

    5. Scissor Shock

You're All Slime. Too good. Album makes me feel very weird.

    6. Cutting Pink with Knives

Oh Wow! I would have taken 30 more songs like that over Populuxxe.

    7. Daughters

    Hell Songs. "No-brainer"

    8. Dir en grey

    Kisou... another no-brainer

    9. Admiral Angry

    9/11... Only Worse

    10. MOSAIC. WAV

Impossible to say. Stuck between Future Fiction, Space Akiba-pop, Chousai Kenbo Sengan, and Last Akibattler.... I'll go with Future Fiction, just because it's the longest one.

    11. Hara-Kari Kitty

32-bit Vampire Necking or whatever it was called. I think his best songs were the ones on that Brokecore comp.

    12. Iceman

Ugh... All of their good songs are spread out. I'll go with Digiryzm Mutation for now.

    13. Pig Destroyer

    Painter Of Dead Girls

    14. Agoraphobic Nosebleed

    Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope

    15. c@

    Ha... me again....
Daring Z-Young Nesyel, which will be out soon.

    16. An Albatross

Oddly, this is a tough one.... I'm gonna go with Blessphemy though.

    17. The Smile Adventure

Split with Pain Tractor. I would really really like another TSA album, despite his aversion to doing one.

    18. Miyavi

    Gagaku. No doubt about that...

    19. Capsule

    s.f. sound furniture.
Hard to compare most of their other albums to this one.

    20. Regurgitate

    Hatefilled Vengeance.
It was tough between this and the new one, but this is probably better I'm thinking.

    21. BeForU

    BeForU II
Some of my favorite songs of any artist.

    22. Haxan

...I don't think he has any

    23. Coaltar of the Deepers

    wow.... I guess The Breastroke

    24. HORSE the band

R Borlax... I still can't believe this band became what they did and came from what they did.
Fun fact: Admiral Angry's old drummer also drummed for HORSE

    25. Naked City

    Torture Garden

    26. Arab on Radar

    Soak The Saddle

    27. The Toilet

The Fruit Will Rot (vol. 3)

    28. Circle of Dead Children

Human Harvest. Brutal... for lack of a better word...

    29. Kindergarten Hazing Ritual

Myspace - The Album (this is not a biased statement based on my presence on the CD). It has some pretty perverted feeling songs (not sexually perverted)

    30. NOFX

wow... really?... they're on my top overall?
I never liked them that much while I had last.fm/audioscrobbler...
    probably Punk In Drublic

What I've learned is that my Overall top chart is basically more representative of me sophomore year than it is of me now. Last.fm also makes you look biased towards bands with short songs. For the same amount of time spent listening to the entire GridLink album twice, you could spend listening to a single Godspeed You! Black Emperor song. You might like both the same, but Last.FM won't know

    This is why:

    a. Don't get a last.fm before you have a bunch of music on your computer

    b. It's impossible to judge tastes entirely on last.fm

    c. Overall charts are not accurate

    d. It's impossible to gauge a band's popularity on song counts (how DO you gauge a band's popularity??)

    e. Maybe "time spent listening to _____" would be a more effective method than play counts

If I get REALLY bored, I'll go back and add html to this

The hype surrounding Sheffield noisecore newcomers Rolo Tomassi has soared emphatically in recent months, their appearance at this summer's Download festival being a major factor, almost universally regarded as one of the main highlights of the entire weekend. Some of the band members may only be approaching the end of their teenage years, but an astute sense of professionalism and maturity is extremely evident within the band, whose achievements already exceed those of numerous supposedly more experienced groups. With the release of fantastic debut album Hysterics, the band's impressive profile seems certain to continue its rapid growth, as it is a well-written, ambitious, and consistently vibrant piece of work that will no doubt attract aficionados of such a gigantic range of genres as metal, hardcore, punk, prog, indie and perhaps even electronica. The band, consisting of vocalist Eva Spence, guitarist Joe Nicholson, bassist Joseph Thorpe, drummer Edward Dutton and keyboardist James Spence, have built and refined an intriguing, mathcore-esque sound that draws influences from the likes of The Fall Of Troy, The Dillinger Escape Plan and HORSE The Band, but there are also several unexpected moments of melody and ambience that effortlessly weave their way through the more brutal intervals. This is an explosive combination that creates a sound that is utterly unique, and this is why so many people consider Rolo Tomassi to be the hottest band in the UK right now.

Hysterics may have its flaws, and it goes without saying that Rolo Tomassi will make better albums than this in the future. However, this is nonetheless an admirably sophisticated musical work, especially when you consider the fact that this is the first full-length album the band has made. From start to finish, the record is like an encompassing journey where no stone whatsoever is left unturned, illustrated by the variety of genres explored. A fine example of this is opening track Oh, Hello Ghost, where the listener is taken aback by the electro-pop intro, but normality soon resumes when the track descends into full-blown mayhem, with a destructive riff Thomas Erak would be proud of. With I Love Turbulence, Rolo Tomassi incorporate a vast number of contrasting musical elements into one incredibly short song. The highlight arises towards the end where the pace increases, complimenting a blistering slice of riffage from Nicholson, although the opening riff is another moment to savour. This track is also a fine portrayal of Eva Spence's vocal ability; it is refreshing to hear a female voice on music of this style, and there seems to be no end to Spence's talents, as this song demonstrates her delicate singing as well as her ferocious growl. Fofteen and first single Abraxas are two pulsating slabs of synth-enhanced mathcore; the former in particular depicts Eva Spence's truly demonic tendencies behind the mic, while the latter contains cameo interludes reminiscent of jazz, before James Spence, brother of vocalist Eva, rounds things off with a magnificent synth solo.

James Spence proves his worth as a formidable musician to even greater effect on interlude An Apology To The Universe and the plain bizarre Everything Went Grey; the man clearly has the foresight to transform such trivial sounds into magical musical moments, as these tracks in particular will testify. Nine is absolutely colossal, and shows Rolo Tomassi at their most ambitious. A seismic mathcore brawl eventually descends into heartstoppingly delicate bliss. It is initially unclear where Macabre Charade ends and Trojan Measures begins, but as a duo these songs are a threatening force that seemingly never ceases to grow and evolve. An exquisite vocal duet from the Spence siblings is the platform for Macabre Charade to increase momentum, firstly with scorching riffage but then with disjointed yet somehow catchy rhythms. Spence's synths then enter the fray on Trojan Measures to add that extra chaotic spark. Closing track Fantasia is an absolute epic, and remains captivating throughout its 14-minute reign. It does this through even more blistering guitar work and gorgeous piano playing, while Eva Spence is again on fire. It is its predecessor, however, which seems to stand out as being perhaps the most intriguing track of the lot. Scabs is simply brilliant, containing the most devastating of riffs and even more virtuoso skills on the synths. This is a track that is destined to expose Rolo Tomassi to a wider audience, as it is likely to attract the indie kids as well as the metalheads, the prog lovers along with the punks, or even just admirers of remarkable musicianship, of which there is plenty. In fact, in spite of their tender ages, every member of Rolo Tomassi proves his or her worth as a talented musician throughout Hysterics, which is fascinating when the genre of music being played is taken into account. Mathcore bands are normally renowned for their vision and songwriting skills, which Rolo Tomassi unquestionably have, but their playing abilities are also incredible, and easily surpass the requirements of mathcore. And with these hugely impressive skills as their foundation, Rolo Tomassi's career is certain to be an exciting one, and their next album could well be a masterpiece. Hysterics, however, is certainly more than enough to keep us ticking over for now. This could be the start of something big.

BEST TRACKS: "Scabs", "I Love Turbulence".
    VERDICT: 8/10.

Hysterics is out now via Hassle Records in all good music stores. Reviews of Textures, Bring Me The Horizon, Funeral For A Friend and Unearth are on the way.

    Cheers for reading,
    JJ.
