Current 93 are an eclectic British experimental music group, working since the early 1980s in folk-based musical forms. The band was founded in 1982 by David Tibet.
Tibet has been the only constant in the group, though Steven Stapleton (of Nurse with Wound) has appeared on nearly every Current 93 release. Michael Cashmore has also been a constant contributor since Thunder Perfect Mind. Douglas P. of Death In June has played on well over a dozen Current 93 releases, and Steve Ignorant of Crass (using the name Stephen Intelligent), Boyd Rice, runologist Freya Aswynn, Nick Cave, Björk, Andrew W. K., Will Oldham, Ben Chasny, Rose McDowall,Tiny Tim, Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus, Marc Almond, John Balance of Coil and Ian Read of Fire + Ice have also lent their talents over the years. Tibet is fond of the works of American writer Thomas Ligotti, and invited him to collaborate with Current 93.

all dolled up like christ is awesome. birdsong in the empire is more out there and cohesive and has them fuck around with the songs more but a lot of the versions on it are just way too overblown and cheesy for their own good. the birdsong versions of black ships ate the sky, niemandswasser and sleep has his house are fucking awesome though.

Other british and semi-british neo-folk related acts well worth checking out are Sieben, various other associated Matt Howden and Tony Wakeford related projects like Howden/Wakeford, HaWthorn, Duo Noir, The Triple Tree and L'Orchestre Noir; Andrew King and his various collabs, Sorrow, While Angels Watch, English Heretic, Mother Destruction, Strength Through Joy, Gaë Bolg and the Church of Fand, Pantaleimon, Seven Pines and SnowW.Wwhite.

Yeah, I meant more in terms of those generally labelled neofolk as every other act I seem to come across is European ;] I'm sure i'll enjoy Coil, and the NWW i've heard is awesome (Chance). Everything else mentioned sounds interesting as well, so thanks.

I second the NWW and Coil of course. I liked the new aethenor album that David Tibet did words for quite a bit its not really 1970's - 80's industrial or neofolk but sort of a slice of todays pie. Andrew Liles isn't too far off topic. Other than that Nekrophile records and many of the bands on the Beast 666 and the other comp have some quality material: Sigillum S, Ain Soph, Zos Kia etc. That not really "british front" but same early industrial material if your into the really early c93 albums at all. There is a pretty good 23 Skidoo album called the Culling Is Coming which I believe tibet played tibetan horns on, also worth a hear.

cats drunk on copper is great, but so is birdsong in the empire (very far up amongst my favorite current releases). How i devoured the apocalypse balloon was the record that got me interested in current.. halo has a supercool version of marry waits in silence and of locust.. if you look in the internets you find quite a good bootleg of the roadburn festival which has a funny version of dögun.. just get them all ;)
