Besides the big four and Germany's big four (Tankard, Destruction, Kreator and Sodom... IN MY OPINION) You should really listen to these thrash metal and crossover bands that I'm going to discuss.

Carnivore

Defunct awesome and essential band. Don't mess with them, they're from New York! This band featured the great Peter Steele who later found Type O' Negative. I suggest you get Retaliation if you want to get into them. Their self-titled one is pretty good. Retaliation is the best one to start off with. It features great songs such as Angry Neurotic Catholics, Race War, Jesus Hitler and Technophobia. Anyone remember the completely stupid rumors going around that Peter Steele was a neo-Nazi. I say bullshit and they're not true.

Yeah the guitars are pretty damn sweet. I'm mostly into the bass playing and singing by Peter Steele when it comes to Carnivore. If you're a fan of Type O and don't know this band... uhhh... wow, just wow. Now I'm no Type O fan, I happen to really really like Carnivore. They're better.

Wehrmacht

Ah the ultimate beer band (right up there with Tankard)! These guys are just an incredibly awesome and great band. I really dig the drums and guitars the most. Biermacht is the best album to get by these guys. Sadly they're another defunct band. My favorite songs are You Broke My Heart (So I Broke Your Face), Gore Flix, Suck My Dick and Biermacht. Biermacht is such a great party thrash metal album. Get this now or eat a bowl of fuck!

Spazztic Blurr

This whacky and zany band (that predates Crotchduster) is a comedy grind/thrash outfit. This band featured members of Wehrmacht. Befo Da Awbum is their only album. Funny thing about this album is that it's really called Before and After. On the front of the cover photo it shows the band all rich and then on the back cover photo it has the band all poor. This is an early Earache release. This one goes all the way back to 1988.

Blurr Hogs is a really great track with some funny vocals and cool guitar stuff. There's some crazy swell whistle in this song. It's basically a track about the whole band and what they're all about. My favorite track and by far one of the funniest tracks I have ever listened to in my entire life... Ace. I'm not saying what's on here. You'll have to listen to it yourself! Anyhow one interesting track on here is Deaf Metal. This is a great death metal parody song. I must say it's slightly SLIGHTLY better than Stars Ingenious Cooter (Live). Yep, that's right. This is the definitive death metal parody track ladies and germs.

Yeah if you don't listen to Spazztic Blurr and you have a sense of humor... you stupid bumblefuck cunt. Go listen to it NAO!!!!!!!!

Heathen

Epic fucking thrash metal. Nuff said, ho bitch fuckers! This band has 2 full length albums that y'all should check out. They are Victims Of Deception and Breaking The Silence. I say go and have a ball with these albums. ALL songs are fucking killer and neato for the whole family to enjoy. Take a family trip while blasting this in your Ford Explorer or Cadillac Escalade. You will make the road cool!

Rigor Mortis

This band is just fucking jaw-dropping thrash metal from Texas. I ain't talking about the band that killer New York death metal. Rigor Mortis is an album you need to get if you call yourself a thrasher. You shall get this or else! Yeah, this has classics such as Bodily Dismemberment, Die in Pain and Re-Animator. You may not think so... but uh yeah those are my personal favorite tracks.

Razor

A really heavy fast and loud (they're proud of it too!) band hailing from Canada. ALL of their albums are worthy. My personal favorites are Executioner's Song and Evil Invaders. It's pretty interesting how I first became aware of Razor. I was looking at this gnarly heavy metal album cover artwork book at Barnes and Noble at the Joyzee Shaw one day. I saw this:



Best. Artwork for an album. EVER.

Yeah it's the best and I said so. Well yeah go listen to Razor or well you're just a chump ass swanky gorilla cuntsucking fookface.

Gama Bomb

This Irish thrash metal band rules. Two great albums. Not gonna say much about 'em except for my favorite song. And that is... Final Fight. Excellent and killer song! Totally takes me back in time when I played that game as I listen to the singer singing about it. This features some quick and great guitar work. There's one part where one of the guitarists makes that 8-bit Nintendo sound where Mario grabs the coins. That part is the best! WTG (Way To Go), Gama Bomb!!

Mengele

A tubular obscure thrash metal band from Finland. They had a pretty bad name (look up Mengele in the history books), so they changed it to Insomnia. Their stuff can be downloaded here. I suggest getting Kuusamon. It rocks! These guys now go by the name Wengele. I find that name clever as cunt. Basically it's an upside M. I think it's much better than Insomnia.

Airdash

Oh hell motherfucking yeah cuntfuckers! This band rules. Another one Finnish thrash metal band you all should check out. Get Thank God Its Monday. Or Eat Shit!

Crumbsuckers

Another great band from good 'ol /\/00 Y/\ \/\/ K (That's New York for you geniuses who couldn't figure that out). Please get Beast on My Back (B.O.M.B.) is a great album that you must get or you're putting yourself at risk about something I don't know... well not really. Go and get this NAO!!!! I command you to get this and listen to this! Crumbsuckers need more recognition. More recognition than Pro-Pain dammit!

Necropolis





To me there is only one Necropolis. I am talking about the one who dropped Contemplating Slaughter in 1988. They are the true Necropolis. Fuck all of you other bands with the name Necropolis. Go choke on hot dogs that are tainted and infested with shit! GAAAHHHH!!!! If you other Necropolis bands are reading this, I suggest ya do what I said last. Or you could just on top of a cliff, smoke a doobie, eat outdated Oreos from the 1990's and then just fall to your doom.

Nuclear Assault

Yet another great New York thrash band. You've obviously been living in a bomb shelter for 50 years and somehow managed to see the light of day. C'mon, folks! Game Over is an album you should get. Get Game Over or diiiiiiiiiiiiie!!

Anacrusis

This band is just tremendous! Technical city people! You gotta respect this band and all of that. Go here to find out more about 'em, ya schmuck!

Toxik

This band from yes my home state... take a wild guess where I'm located... you will win a big snickerdoodle... hmm nah actually... that's for my BF, I love you and you know who you are! :) Anyway, I mentioned other superb bands from this fine location. Yeah get both of the albums. However get World Circus if you wanna go for one and one only. That one features the great title track and Heart Attack. Social Overload is a great track as well and personally one of my favorites off that album.

Korzus

This is an obscure band. And wow, they've been around since ninety eighty fuckin' three!!!!!! I've listened to these guys at their MySpace page. Ultra nice stuff I must say. Brazil has such a great collection of great metal bands. These guys are one of 'em.

Music is all i spend my money on well after bill's and rent and shopping of course. Recommend me some doom just starting to get back into it.

Let me start by saying it was hard narrowing this down to only 10 albums, since there are dozens of essential pieces of art everybody should know about. I chose these ten records based on my personal preference at this very moment, and my opinion will probably change in the future.

They are not in any particular order because all of the albums are classics which should be respected (even if you don't find yourself enjoying them). If you can't find any copy to review, I'd be more than happy to provide you one. Without further ado, here's the list.



Describing this album is near to impossible, the variety and originality are simply mind-blowing. Don't even try finding a genre for this, because not a single band is similar to Arcturus. It may take a while to get into it, or to realize how unique this is. I have yet to decide whether I like this one most or La Masquerade Infernale, you should check the both of them out. I decided to pick TSM because it's more accessible. Just so you know what to expect, the phrase "epic avant-garde rock/metal with orchestral elements" might be an indication, though obviously labeling Arcturus is a mad man's job.



neofolk at its best! Let the amazing, soothing voice of Douglas Pearce take control of your mind and relax. Not quite accesible if you're not used to this sort of music, but perhaps a great gateway. Neo-nazis or not, who gives a shit? The music kicks ass and that's all that matters. Slow folk mixed with industrial parts, strings, ambient parts and ofcourse the voice. And what a a voice this is! I fell in love with it the moment I first heared it, perhaps you might too.



Fans of metal, pay attention. If by now you haven't heard this album, get your ass to the record store and buy multiple copies for the entire family to enjoy. Another unique band, who are somewhat thrash but then somehow not ... at the same time. This album is their unquestioned best and arguably one of the greatest technical metal albums ever. Technical, while still catchy. Catchy, while still aggresive. Aggresive, while still beatiful. In the vein of bands as Toxik or Xentrix, though still unique. No brutal/extreme thrash, but speed metal based songs with the occasional falsetto. Everything from this album is perfect: from the vocals to the riffs (holy crap, the riffs ... drool ...) to the incredible bass, to the drums, to the tight-ass production.



Just to avoid any confusion, yes, this is a funk album. One of the best funk albums ever? The best funk album ever? I'm not sure, but what I do know is that everybody should've heard this before they die. If you only listen to a number of genres and are scared of exploring other things, then don't bother. Otherwise, this might be a great introduction to the wonderful world of bass-driven, grooving funk music. The opening track is one of the best songs ever written and that's saying a lot. Prepare to groove and get grooved.



Here's what to expect: extreme death/thrash. That's it. No bullshit, no pointless noodling ... over thirty minutes of skullcrushing extreme metal without anything fancy or 'nice'. Uglyness, that's what this album is all about. 'Spectrum of Death' is ugly as hell and damned proud of it too. If you can handle some serious headbanging, get this album and play it on repeat for two weeks straight. Remember: "Morbid Saint brutally rapes you anally and your pets every time you put on Spectrum of Death. Even though you are repulsed, you'll want more every single time." Nothing original here, nothing fancy. The definition of no-bullshit-get-to-the-point-and-start-headbanging thrash.



This might very well be the best folk metal album ever. The term 'epic' was redefined when Moonsorrow released this album. They had to take out all the dictionaries from the shelves and replace them with new ones, just to change the definition for 'epic'. Listeners with short attention spans should stop reading here because the songs are long. A mild warning that is, because to fully experience this album you need to shut off all the lights, sit down and let the art flow through your veins for 50 minutes of pure awesomeness. The atmosphere that this perfect combination of folk and black metal invokes is astonishing (to say the least). Give it a chance, but don't come back crying because you're too much of an idiot to follow my advice on how to properly experience it.



Technical, progressive death metal. Sort of. If the term death metal makes you crawl into a corner out of pure fear, come back and give the genre another chance. For the newcomers, this is nothing like Cannibal Corpse or the stereotypical 'mindless noise making' metal band. Everything is awesome; the mid-tempo riffs, the intelligent lyrics, the insanely great breakdowns, the bass, the vocals, the drums, the production ... this is as good as metal gets without actually resorting to making noise (as it's viewed by outsiders, I personally don't see any problem with bands who are portrayed to make 'noise'). Oh and please, take your fancy watered-down commercial crap such as melodeath and crapcore back to the anus you just finished screwing and prepare for some of the greatest death metal ever written.



Nearly a hundred albums has Buckethead made so far (both solo or with his various bands). From rock to metal to ambient to funk to jazz to ... he's done nearly everything, and he's damned good at it too. While he's a master at various instruments he's most known for being one of the greatest guitarists to have ever lived. So, I decided to pick an instrumental rock album for you to start. It's one of his best, though not representative of his discography whatsoever. He's made funk, ambient, jazz, you name it. This particular album is where he decided to prove he's worth to being called one of the greatest musicians of contemporary music. But this is not a giant wanking fest either. Check it out. Let the soul of Buckethead reach you through out-of-the-world-songs such as Soothsayer (dedicated to Aunt Suzie) ... a wise person (me) once said: "Buckethead's music is so varied that no matter who the hell you are, you will at least enjoy one of his albums".



Mike Patton, love him or hate him. What nobody denies is that his music is insane, experimental, original and above all random. Few people realize the word random was invented by Patton and came in use after he released this album. I'm not a huge fan, but I acknowledge his genius as such and appreciate this particular album for what it is: a random mix of a bunch of very different (and randomly chosen) genres. Enjoy it or not, this is a must hear, even for people who can't stand originality.



Quite possibly the funniest album ever. By funny, I mean you'll be laughing your ass off til you die with this album. The lyrics are some of the most absurd, perverted, genius comedy I've ever witnessed. This is perfectly complemented with the music, which is sort of Patton-ish, though even more extreme. Grindcore, jazz, blues, power metal, pop/rock ... it's all present and switches at an average of about 15 seconds and 300 times a song. Get hold of the lyrics and enjoy, because if you don't, it's proof that you have the worst sense of humour ever.

A big "fuck you" goes out to all the scene kiddies, trendwhores, posers and people who only listen to watered-down, commercialised forms of music (glam metal, melodeath, nu metal, metalcore, deathcore ... you name it). All of these mainstream atrocities are equally bad, and I laugh at fans of one particular trend who 'hate mainstream' things (for example the guy who listens to Killswitch Engage and calls other things commercial crap). You are the people who fuel garbage and destroy the underground, please start listening to some real music. Not that this has anything to do with this journal, just a message I'd like to spread to the world.

Moonsorrow - V: Havitetty

Two half-hour tracks makes sure you never forget the “epic” that’s included in Moonsorrow’s “epic Viking metal” genre tag. Havitetty is another success for sure and these long songs will weed out those that just want another Suden Uni from these Fins. Moonsorrow might be ignoring brevity, but all their trademarks are still in place as Jäästä Syntynyt / Varjojen Virta's first few minutes include traditional Scandinavian harmonies, folky flutes, and a crackling fire as the song builds to a familiar midpaced, fist pumping section that’s as catchy as it is stirring. It’s Verisäkeet all over again, yet on a grander, somewhat darker scale. The production sounds a tad washed out as various elements are lost simply because there is so much going on, but the fact that band wants to take these extra steps sounds like heaven to these ears that are so tired of the prereq minimalist Burzumic black fog. That and Moonsorrow has always been keen on dynamics. Where most metal bands think that loud/soft simply cuts it, Moonsorrow goes that extra mile by utilizing every instrument and, seemingly, every texture at their disposal. Some may lament that these songs creep over sitcom length and therefore can only be listened to at specific times (or, according to those with the all too common metal ADD affliction, not at all), but Moonsorrow’s skills at building tension haven’t diminished which makes these macroblasts fly by. ‘course, some people just want to get caught up in some epic music, and to them I say, take your next vacation in the snowy north with these Vikings.

Mess:
7000 Dying Rats – A Season in Hell

Another jokey thrash/grind album. Hooray. Maybe if we hadn’t heard all these jokes before, Season in Hell would fair a bit better. Members of Lair of the Minotaur account for the guitar tone and on the skins is…Weasel Walter? Kind of unexpected and Scott Kelly makes a brief cameo, but don’t expect too many other surprises. The highlight is Weasel’s hip-hop song about getting sweaty while drumming, which is funnier/better than anything on Gut’s last record, but that’s not saying much. A cover of Paranoid with a beat might make you smile (though Busta Rhymes covering Iron Man was infinitely more hilarious), but the transition into a send up of Sabbath and bluegrass is forced humor at its least funny, not to mention that the whole metal/bluegrass thing has been exhausted by Hayseed Dixie. Musically, a bunch of avant-noise, horror soundtrack interludes (think Zombi), samples, and BCT/Fuck the Facts – Mullet Fever bridges are mixed together with incredibly old jokes (record store clerks are, like, totally pretentious assholes, guys) and third-rate Putnam aping song titles (We Had ‘Dying’ in Our Name Before All Those Metalcore Cocksuckers Came Along). Thankfully, the actual grind is separated from the “jokes” and, as grind goes, it’s okay. A far less serious, more punk influenced Lair of the Minotaur, maybe. They say humor is subjective and maybe I just don’t “get” it, but I don’t think there’s much to get when you’re singing about balls. It’s like one of those first time comics who bombs on amateur night, because his jokes are either too inside or just not funny to anyone else besides close acquaintances. That's not to say the Rats are green (they have more releases than my old CD-R label), it's just that I'm pretty far outside that inner circle that probably finds this album hilarious. Sorry dudes, sticking with Crotchduster on this one.

Rest:
Zozobra – Harmonic Tremors
Prerelease, most made one of two observations while looking at the membership: 1) Cave In minus Brodsky or 2) Old Man Gloom minus Turner. Turns out to be a bit of both. Bass heavy opener The Blessing’s beginning sounds like the best track that didn’t get included on Perfect Pitch Black, but takes a turn at the end, sounding like one of OMG’s mini-crawls. Cave In fans still bummed that their band’s return to more aggressive material wasn’t aggressive enough, might be interested in Harmonic Tremor’s bruisers that never forgo those fine hooks. At the very least, those who can’t stand Brodsky’s forays into Beatlesque pop/Failure’s space or Turner’s interest in ambient and electronic music will find Zozobra a welcome relief, as the band purposely stakes out middle ground. I can’t say that it’s on par with either main band’s work (it’s a grower and it’s currently growing), but it’s good and will do in a pinch when I don’t want to deal with either’s eccentricities.

Cursed – Blackout at Sunrise
A quickie three song EP from Canada’s great hardcore hope. Much improved production over their previous three releases is the obvious selling point, but please don’t ignore the songs on Blackout. The unconverted may change their tune while trying to come to terms with the shear visceral force on display. The title track pounds for five minutes without going anywhere, but it sounds so good doing it. The Hands Will Abide sounds, at once, like traditional hardcore punk and the genre’s logical conclusion. A slight sludge influence sets them apart and makes sure these songs sound not only vicious, but downright dirty. I found their previous output a little boring, never living up to the hype, but Blackout at Sunrise makes me want to reexamine my previous stance. Blackout might not change your opinion on Cursed, like it has mine, but it certainly signals that there are good things on the horizon.

Car Bomb – Centralia
Ex-Neck takes tech timing to new levels. Think a more experimental Human Remains meets Nyia, with quick Mike Patton near-ambient tangents, and some Disembodied chugs thrown in to give you something to remember. And, that’s only one song. Fans of the promo/demo can rest easy as Rid, His Eyes, and Solid Grey are done up once again, though, it’s a bit of a downer that previously released material remains their strongest stuff. The guitar work is creative, the drumming is jaw dropping, and the middle finger to common song construction/rhythm is fresh without ever sounding messy or illogical. The stop/start riffing and the *blink*-you-missed-it style does kill the flow and makes the listen a bit jarring and disjointed, however. That, and not all of their ideas shine as brightly as others. Still, the effort is appreciated, even if Centralia doesn’t quite measure up to the expectations. In a few years, they could be to tech what Monk was to bop and I can’t think of a better compliment than that.

The End – Elementary
Tech band writes rock riffs rife with melody and begins the shift towards mainstream stardom. Maybe not stardom, but certainly The End will now feel the embrace of a wider fan base. Within Dividia’s complexity is now only a memory, as the band steps up (or steps back) with the likes of The Esoteric; another techish band throwing it all away to record songs that are memorable instead of stringing “cool” parts together. But, like The Esoteric, the band has forgotten the weight and aggressiveness of their previous metal attack at home, which is what made them so enjoyable in the first place. That, and you get the feeling that the singer really wants to be Jonah Jenkins. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but his version of Jonah is spliced with hints of bands like Saosin. Still, even though these songs are a bit overlong and tend to drag (especially the acoustic closer that comes nowhere close to tech gone acoustic Nostromo), the singability of these hooks will keep this album in the car of most listeners. A great transition, but not a great album. The next one could be stellar, as the band graduates to the always confusing middle school. Hair in weird places and zits always seem to make for the best rock/metal albums.

Coldworker – The Contaminated Void
I have a hard time finding fault with something that fulfills its function. It’s not fair for me to compare a simple chair to some glorious architectural masterpiece, especially when the chair’s only function is to be a place to sit, right? In a way, The Contaminated Void is that chair. It’s straightforward Swedish death with most songs barely hitting the two and a half minute mark. Heavy tone, solid musicianship, and a decent vocal performance. Think a grinding Bloodbath or Ribspreader (not surprising since Swano is on the knobs) without the interest in bringing Grave back from the, well, you know. It’s not going to satiate techheads looking for the ultra complex, but one thinks that Coldworker never wanted to be complex or unique. It’s just a chair, have a seat and enjoy the experience for what it is.

Jorn – Unlocking the Past
He with the golden pipes covers his influences. Great bands/songs, yet Unlocking the Past never hits the highs of a regular Lande solo venture. If it unlocks anything, it’s how much more enjoyable his own distillation of AOR/proto-metal can be. A far less varied Jorn album, then? Kind of. All the hallmarks are there, these are his influences after all, but Lande has shown that he’s more adept at taking the crème de la crème of metal cheese, the best parts of these covers, and leaving the rest behind. Case in point: A song like Feel Like Making Love sets up to be a perfect cover for The Duke, but it comes off as rather bland and lifeless. Like cover albums before Unlocking the Past, the execution isn’t as high as it could be, nor is there much of a creative spark. Straight reads it is not, but the band, and Jorn in general, sound a little boxed in by knowing (read: revering) the source material so well. Still, it has been every fan’s fantasy to hear him shout the final lines of Children of the Sea and he does so at the end of Lonely is the Word / Letters From Earth. A tad underwhelming, especially coming on the heels of Duke of Love, but it’s nice to hear MSG’s On and On, no matter what the context.

Elision – Things Are Far From OK
Releases like this always pose the question, do I not like this because the quality is lacking or because I’ve heard so many bands in this vein before? Leaning towards the latter because, although Things has no noticeable flaws, it doesn’t sound particularly fresh, basically treading ground already covered by three of the big hardcore Bs: Burst, Breach, and Botch. Fans of Burst will probably get the most out of this considering the vocal resemblance and overall drive. There are a few clever sections, as the band’s use of the polyrhythm and some great riffing keeps this from sinking to the bottom of a vast ocean of bands built in the Burst/Breach/Botch mold. Still, one can’t help but think that this should’ve been released five years ago. I still have a soft spot for metalcore of this variety and these Germans do it better than most (not to mention, they have the right set of influences), but it’s nothing you haven’t heard before. Of course, if you haven’t heard a lot of it, this is as good a place as any to start.

The County Medical Examiners – Olidous Operettas
Once a fun novelty, the curtain has been pulled and these “real life pathologists” are now rumored to be “real life members of Exhumed.” Shame, the put-on was fun while it lasted and produced one pretty good split with fellow Carcass worshippers, General Surgery. But, as most jokes tend to do (are you reading, SNL?), this gag has lasted for far too long. Symphonies of Sickness has never sounded so forced and sloppy; another boring retread of a classic that should be left alone. Guest solos (at least, one assumes these are guests) are the highlights, but Olidous Operettas never even reaches the fairly low bar set by lesser clones like Exhumed and Impaled. Worth buying only if Symphonies of Sickness, Necrology, or A Chapter of Accidents aren’t within arm's length.
