  • 50 Questions About My Top 50

    Jul 21 2009, 4h54 por Alter_Idem

Decided to to Top 50 Artists Overall. I joined 31 Jan 2005.

[1.] How did you get into 29?
    Jack Johnson
I'm sure, like everyone else, I heard TocarFlake on the radio.

[2.] What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    David Bowie
Couldn't 22 have been easier? I'm assuming it was something from Labyrinth that made me love him. I seemed to be the only one growing up who had heard of that movie. Suddenly I'm an adult and everyone knows it. Odd.

    [3.] What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
Two 33s: Alison Krauss & Union Station & Counting Crows
The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes sayin' you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all
TocarWhen You Say Nothing at All

    I will paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very very meaningful
    Grey is my favorite color
    I felt so symbolic yesterday
    If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar and play
    TocarMr. Jones
(I actually prefer TocarBig Yellow Taxi , but it's a cover so I don't count it.)

[4.] What is your favorite album by 49?
    Hoobastank
Quite frankly, I'm confused as to how they're that high. I believe I owned both Hoobastank and The Reason. Don't think I ever listened much to the latter. Ah, yes, it was the track TocarCrawling In The Dark

[5.] How many albums by 13 do you own?
    Marcy Playground
One. This is a sore point. I miss this band. One of the best live shows I've ever seen.

[6.] What is your favorite song by 50?
    Kevin Sharp
Tossup between TocarNobody Knows and Population 4000 Minus 1. The first is the one that everyone knows by him. The second is written about my hometown. Actually, I like most of that album.

[7.] Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
    Tracy Lawrence
Most of his stuff makes me think. TocarTime Marches On probably provokes emotion the most.

[8.] What is your favorite album by 15?
    Everclear
So Much for the Afterglow by far. I can listen to every track but one over and over and over again.

[9.] What is your favorite song by 5?
    Garth Brooks
All of the above. Right now we'll go with TocarStanding Outside the Fire .

[10.] Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    Maroon 5
    TocarHarder to Breathe

[11.] What is your favorite album by 40?
Another Tie: The Wallflowers: Bringing Down The Horse (duh)
And Diamond Rio: Well, I own Love a Little Stronger, so we'll go with that one.

[12.] What is your favorite song by 10?
    Adema
    TocarThe Way You Like It

[13.] What is a good memory you have involving 30?
    Reba McEntire
Not sure I have any. The first track I loved was, of course, TocarFancy, even if I didn't get it at the time.

[14.] What is your favorite song by 38?
    The Union Underground
TocarTurn Me On "Mr. Deadman", though all of ...An Education in Rebellion frickin rocks.

[15.] Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
19 is disney. We'll go with "yes."

[16.] How many times have you seen 25 live?
    George Michael
    None. *sad face*

[17.] What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
    Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I have no clue. robertpalmer was way into them, so I got the entire Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album and listened to it. I'm still not sure how I feel about them.

[18.] What is your favorite album by 11?
    Sawyer Brown
This Thing Called Wantin' and Havin' It All
Really hoping to see them live next month. Need $25. Might be impossible.

[19.] Who is a favorite member of 1?
    Nine Inch Nails
    Trent Reznor without comment.

[20.] Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Tennis Pro
No, and I'm a little bitter about it having lived so damn close to Seattle. Now that I'm back near Portland, hope has been restored.

[21.] What is a good memory involving 27?
    System of a Down
It's not necessarily "good" but I do have a memory that directly involves TocarChop Suey!. I was driving to work one morning listening to the radio station I always did with the annoying morning DJs. They mention something about a plane and a building and then play TocarChop Suey!. A commercial comes on afterward and I start flipping radio stations. Everyone is talking about planes. The date was September 11, 2001.

I thought the morning DJs on my usual station were just playing a joke. The lyrics "I cry when angels deserve to die" have struck me ever since.

[22.] What is your favorite song by 16?
    Nirvana
The Man Who Sold The World and TocarLake Of Fire, but they're both covers. Defaults to TocarSmells Like Teen Spirit.

[23.] What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
No 47, so we'll go with all the 46s:
    12 Stones
Must be TocarCrash, the first track on the album 12 Stones because I bought it after hearing the lead singer on TocarBring Me To Life. (Get it?)

    Johnny Cash
Oh hell if I know. I grew up listening to this crap. The one that made me sit up and take notice again was TocarHurt one day while flipping past CMT.

    Our Lady Peace
    Finally an easy one: TocarClumsy.

[24.] What is your favorite album by 18?
    Coal Chamber
    Chamber Music

    (holy crap, I'm only halfway???)

[25.] What is your favorite song by 21?
    R.E.M.
    Losing My Religion

[26.] What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
    Good Charlotte
TocarLittle Things. I saw the music video on MTV or MuchMusic before I ever heard them on the radio. I own Good Charlotte with the original cover. Fads ruin everything.

[27.] What is your favorite album by 3?
    Paul Simon
If I had The Paul Simon Collection: On My Way, Don't Know Where I'm Goin' on tape, I would have replaced it at least a dozen times I've listened to it so much.

[28.] What is your favorite song by 2?
The Presidents of the United States of America
Don't make me choose! Hmm... TocarLove Everybody

[29.] What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    Powerman 5000
    TocarWhen Worlds Collide

[30.]. What is your favorite song by 8?
    Bad Religion
    Sorrow

[31.] How many times have you seen 17 live?
    No Doubt
    Zero. I'm okay with that.

[32.] Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
    Live
Actually, no. I do love TocarLightning Crashes, of course.

[33.] What is your favorite album by 12?
    Alan Jackson
    The Greatest Hits Collection
I apparently listen to a lot of compilation CDs.

[34.] What is the worst song by 45?
    Matchbox Twenty
I adored Yourself or Someone Like You to the point where I bought it twice when it went missing. I haven't been moved by anything they've done since.

[35.] What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    No 34. 35 is TLC.
I assume I heard Waterfalls first.

[36.] What is your favorite album by 48?
No 48 and I covered this with 46 and 49.

[37.] How many times have you seen 42 live?
    Hootie and the Blowfish
Zero. Though I'd see Darius Rucker now that he's country.

[38.] What is your favorite song by 36?
    Alanis Morissette
    TocarHands Clean

    Travis Tritt
    Tell Me I Was Dreaming

[39.] What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
    No 28. 27s: System of a Down
That I associated with "this is System of a Down" was TocarChop Suey!

    Stone Temple Pilots
Hell if I know. I wasn't into this music when they were big so I heard it all when I started listening to this sort of music. If that makes sense.

[40.] What is your favorite album by 7?
    Richard Cheese
Most songs I listen to seem to be off Tuxicity. I don't listen to him by album.

[41.] Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
No 30. 31 is Ben Folds Five
TocarSong for the Dumped and TocarBattle of Who Could Care Less make me smile.

[42.] What is your favorite album by 41?
No 41. One 40 and both 42s only ever put out one hit album each (and I owned all 3) and I talked about the other 40 already, so I'm not bothering with this question.

[43.] What is your favorite song by 24?
    Using 1 of the 23s:
    Green Day
    Probably Redundant.

[44.] What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Do people really have memories involving music? Besides my ex-husband? I really don't. The System of a Down memory mentioned previously was a fluke that took thousands of people dying.

[45.] What is your favorite song by 35?
    TLC
I'll always stop flipping radio stations for Unpretty. Always.

[46.] Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
    Toby Keith
TocarShould've Been A Cowboy, among many others. This is happy music.

[47.] What is your favorite album by 4?
    Godsmack
    Godsmack. Easily.

[48.] Who is a favorite member of 37?
There is no 37. Just like the spoon.

[49.] What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
I haven't mentioned Cherry Poppin' Daddies at 42.
Zoot Suit Riot, just like everybody else.

[50.] How many albums do you own by 20?
    Crosby, Stills & Nash
One, but Last.fm counts it as two. Carry On (disc 1) & Carry On (disc 2). I bought it when I ended up with CSN tickets and realized I wasn't sure what they sang.

God damn, that took forever and ended up being not that interesting to me.

    1. What's your favorite song by 15?
TocarHot Burrito #1, probably. So, so beautiful.

    2. How did you get into 20?
Well, one thing led to another, basically. I got into Poco when I was pretty much obsessed with Buffalo Springfield. I loved the sound of Richie Furay's voice, and at the same time I was going through a country-rock phase, so I was all over these guys' albums. They didn't disappoint.

    3. Who is your favorite member in 1?
Roger Waters. Obvious answer is obvious.

    4. What’s your favorite lyric bit by 29?
By Michael Nesmith & The Second National Band? It's either Wax Minute or In The Afternoon. Probably the first.

    5. Have you ever seen 22 live?
I haven't seen Roger Waters live, no, are you trying to make me cry?

    6. What's your favorite album from 10?
For purely sentimental reasons it's A Quick One. Not the best, but it was the first one I heard and the one that made me fall in love with them. Plus, it's so much fun, you can't not love it. Quadrophenia deserves at least a mention though.

    7. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
No, I don't own any Humble Pie merchandise. I do own a couple of albums though.

    8. What is a good memory you have of 7?
All of my Herman's Hermits memories are good memories. If I had to choose one to write here, I guess it'd be the time I found that greatest hits CD dirt cheap.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
No, all of Buffalo Springfield's members are pretty old/dead. They were around my age when they were in the band, though, does that count?

    10. When did you first get into 8?
I've always known of him (I have the Simpsons to thank for that), but I only got really into Michael Nesmith's solo career just recently.

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
Lots of people like Donovan. Sadly, I haven't met those people in person. Oh except that guy who sells CDs, I guess. And Valeria.

    12. Which song did you first hear from 16?
Mmm, do Beatles tunes written and sung by him count? It's either While My Guitar Gently Weeps or Here Comes the Sun. If those don't count, it's probably I'd Have You Anytime.

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
Who doesn't fall in love with The Monkees after watching the show?

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?
Ah, someone's going to kill me for this, I just know it. I'm not really into The Beatles in general.

    15. Why do you like 14's songs?
Because not only are they fun, they're also very good. Everyone should listen to The Small Faces every once in a while, if only because Steve Marriott had one of the greatest voices I've ever heard.

    16. Where did you first hear 6?
I don't know, to be honest. Led Zeppelin is one of those bands you grow up listening to everywhere, even if you don't know it's them. Everyone knows at least Stairway to Heaven or Black Dog.

    17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them?
Well, considering Janis Joplin died way before I was born, I'd say her whole life.

    18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory?
Not really, no. Most of Buddy Holly's songs fill me with joy rather than bad memories.

    19. When did you get into 17?
Only recently. It took me 20 years to get into Janis Joplin, for some reason. I tend to ignore female singers, to be honest.

    20. How long have you been into 9?
Michael Nesmith is featured so much on this list, I'm going to just stop answering questions about him.

    21. If 11 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
Yes. If Cream had a concert 300 miles away I'd even learn how to drive.

    22. How many CDs do you own of 12?
Only 2 or 3. I'm sure I own Beggar'S Banquet and AFTERMATH, but my memory fails me after that.

    23. Does 21 have a song that makes you cry?
Nope. Wow, and I thought everyone had at least one song that reduces me to tears. Apparently the Red Hot Chili Peppers are the exception to this rule.

    24. Does 27 have a song that makes you happy?
Yes, TocarDominoes and TocarHere I Go are two of them. Most of the songs from his days with Pink Floyd make me happy too.

    25. Does 23 have a song that makes you smile?
Yes, Peter Frampton has a song that makes me smile. More than one, actually.

    26. What's the last song you've listened to from 28?
I have no idea what the last song by John Entwistle I listened to is.

    27. Is there a song by 32 that you've listened to more than 30 times?
Nope. I only got Stephen Stills's albums like 3 weeks ago and haven't had the time. If his songs with Buffalo Springfield count, then yes. I've also listened to Suite: Judy Blue Eyes more than 30 times, I guess.

    28. What is a song from 50 that you've only listened to once?
I have Peter Tork and Shoe Suede Blues, Jaco Pastorius, Sly & The Family Stone and Charlie Watts all tied for number 50. Even though last.fm says I haven't, I've heard their songs more than once, except for Sly & The Family Stone. I gave their album Whole New Thing a listen and didn't like it very much.

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24?
Nope, David Gilmour's work is the kind of music I usually don't get sick of hearing.

    30. What song got you into 40?
Well, I'm not really into The Beach Boys, I just listen to Pet Sounds every once in a great while. As for the Faces and John Paul Jones, it wasn't a song that got me into them.

    31. What is your favorite single by 25?
Was TocarPsycho Daisies released as a single?

    32. If 49 hated you, what would you do?
    There is no 49.

    33. What would you say if 42 or one of the members from 42 asked you out?
    No 42 either :(

    34. Would you care if 41 had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
No 41... Wow, this is starting to get really boring.

    35. Who has the best voice in 46?
Seriously, stop it with the ties, last.fm!

    36. Do you think 26 is/are good looking?
I guess Chris Hillman wasn't bad looking. Otherwise no, I don't think The Byrds are good looking.

    37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by 36?
I don't have a favorite song by Peter Tork & James Lee Stanley

    38. How many CDs do you own of 30?
2 solo and another 2 with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. John Frusciante albums are hard to find here.

    39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad?
No, Gram Parsons' songs don't make me mad.

    40. Which member from 31 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group?
Well, 31 is Ronnie Lane, so this question is pretty pointless. He was in several bands and he went solo, so. If he joined a group now I'd be freaked out, but that's mostly because he'd be a zombie.

    41. What does your favorite song from 48 remind you of?
    48 doesn't exist.

    42. Did you hate 43 at first?
No, I never hated Rick Wright or Iron Butterfly. You can't hate people who make songs that are 20 minutes long and never get boring.

    43. Does your best friend also listen to 33?
No, my best friend doesn't listen to Crosby, Stills & Nash. She should, though.

    44. Do you think your parents would like 37?
My dad probably liked at least one Jefferson Airplane song back in the day, but my mom would probably hate them.

    45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance?
The Kinks and Queen do. I've only heard one of Steve Marriott's solo albums, and the songs weren't exactly for dancing, but if we're counting The Small Faces (I hate that last.fm adds the "the" to their name) songs, then yes.

    46. Have you ever seen 34 in person?
No, I haven't seen Derek and the Dominos in person. I wasn't even alive at the time...

    47. Do you like 44's name?
    There's no 44.

    48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with?
There's a two-way tie here. All of them are old, so no. If I'd been around when Roger Waters & Eric Clapton were young (except Yardbirds!Eric Clapton), then yes. The Animals not so much, they were all ugly.

    49. Do you know anyone that hates 39?
I don't know anyone that hates Les Fleurs de Lys. I don't know anyone that knows Les Fleurs de Lys.

    50. Have you ever danced to a song from 35?
Peter Tork and Shoe Suede Blues and Sly & The Family Stone, yes. Jaco Pastorius and Charlie Watts no, because how the hell does one dance to that?

    Thursday

Plenty of fun wandering around the site in the super heat, then super rain. Waiting in the crowd for Maximo Park's first set at the Queens Head proved too much, so we headed to the cinema tent. We did manage to watch the following:

    The Boat That Rocked

    Ferris Bueller's Day Off

    Anvil! The Story of Anvil

    This Is Spinal Tap

    Friday

    Bjorn Again
After having to que outside of the cinema tent yesterday for Ferris Bueller, we had the (dis)pleasure of hearing the last 20 minutes of Mamma Mia. I really thought that alone would be enough to overdose on Abba for the full week, but come the following morning I must say listening to the songs live from the comfort of our tent was quite enjoyable. I've no idea what they looked like though.

    Gabriella Cilmi
Again, from the tent. Dont remember anything either special or dissatisfying about her.

    The Rumble Strips
A wander down to the John Peel Tent, and these were playing. A nice start to the day, watched 4 or 5 numbers then headed off for Regina via the Other Stage.

    The Rakes
Would have probably been better hanging around the JT tent a little longer. These werent anything special. Just the typical "you know what" of the late 00's. Cant say I was impressed.

    Regina Spektor ---HIGHLIGHT!--
She, on the other hand, was amazing. I wasnt sure how she'd fit in on the Pyramid Stage, her performance was top notch. Plenty of unfamiliar songs from the new album didnt dissappoint either.

    The Maccabees
Cant remember much about them, but I'm sure I did see them, looking back at the time table.

    N*E*R*D
Caught a couple of songs as I wandered to the back, and then along the top path to the Acoustic Stage. Enjoyable enough, but I dont know any of their stuff.

    Hugh Cornwell
He surprised me with quite a good set, mixing in some Stranglers classics (Incl. a great "Nice N Sleazy") along with songs from a new record. Wasnt sure what he'd be like, but had a good sound for a 3 piece. All electric instruments, so isn't that cheating in the Acoustic Tent? Dedicated Goldon Brown to the late great Michael Jackson.

    Fleet Foxes
Rushed back to the Pyramid Stage to see what I hoped would be one of those perfect festival moments. I was kinda let down. They looked the part, and I know they have the songs, but they just didnt seem to translate that well to such a large audience. I would have much rather seen them later in the day in a more intimate setting. I think there were a few sound problems too, so that was out of there hands.

    Emilíana Torrini --HIGHLIGHT!--
I'd already made my mind up that I was only going to get 30-40mins of FF set before having to rush across to The Park (which is extremely difficult), so that I would get a similar amount of time with Emiliana. There weren't too many up at The Park at this particular time, which was a good and bad thing. I was able to walk right in, and get pretty close, with a great unobstructed view, perfectly central. On the other hand, she really did deserve a larger audience. She was wonderful. Having missed the first couple of songs, the first 3 songs she and her band played were unknown to me. I'm only familar with me & armini . Still not a single bad song in the set. She got the giggles a few times, and also seemed to have a bit of trouble hearing the monitors, but her vocals were spot on. The rest of the band were perfect too.

    Scott Matthews
Back over to the Acoustic Tent to kill some time (to sit down and give my legs a rest). He played a decent solo set. Again, I dont know any of his stuff but it was good enough to keep me happy, and the rest of the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

    The Specials
Fantastic. They played a nice set, including most songs from their debut album. Great energy onstage. You wonder why it took them so long to get back together. Had they played "Dawning Of A New Era", I would have rated this set even higher.

    Neil Young --HIGHLIGHT!--
He blew my mind. I think even beforehand, he could have done no wrong. I was just happy that I'd actually had the opportunity to see him again (and taken it this time). A set filled with hits. With artists like Neil Young, he's always going to dissappoint a few by leaving out some songs, as he's got such a great big back catalogue. As soon as he played the intro to "Are You Ready For The Country?" I was thrilled that this wasnt just a greatest hits set.

He was up against some strong competition. Doves were headlining elsewhere, and they are a fantastic live band. Bloc Party (whom I've never seen) would have been on my list of must-see's if they didnt clash with anyone important. Also another 60s/70s god, Ray Davies played the Acoustic Tent. I still hope to see Mr. Kink sometime.
