But Zep and Sabbath probably wouldn't have sounded the way they did if it wasn't for Cream shaping rock & roll into what it was at the tail end of the 60's, just before Zep were on the scene.

Metal music was born at they end of the 60´s,with loud blues rock and psychedelic rock at their main origins,Cream,with Jeff Beck,Jimi Hendrix,Blue Cheer,were like the loudest blues rock bands,that is why are considered early metal,not because they are metal,you see nobody will really believe that Clapton was a metal guitarrist,is because that they were the most metal thing in their time,the most early example of what metal woudl became later.really early metal? that titles claims to Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.

They are considered not early metal,really,but proto-metal.Why?,if you listen to Black Sabbath first album,you will notice a lot of trace and influence of Cream music,so,they kind of set some rules in the way of how early metal was played,just like Jimi Hendrix,you see,Sunshine of Your Love is like a proto metal song.But both Hendrix and Cream,are obiously not metal,just part of the metal history book.

@Matt It's not that metal-heads are trying to claim this as metal. Metal-heads probably wouldn't consider it metal at all. It's just that in it's early years, metal was so loosely defined. Personally, I think Sabbath was the first.
