    Mar 12 2009, 19h39 por Zverenok

    Country Joe McDonald-

A Little Help From My Friends =)

    Jefferson Airplane ! ! ! ! !

    John Sebastian-

2 - Jimi Hendrix

    Fri 15 Feb – Richie Havens

    Richie Havens is yet another artist I hadn't heard of until I saw the Woodstock film, but I was sufficiently impressed by that to go and see him at the Jazz Café in Camden on Friday night. (He's also the bloke with the amazing beard who sings 'TocarTombstone Blues' in I'm Not There.)

    What a lovely man. He came on in his silk robe like everyone's wise, kindly, funny and slightly naughty grandfather, apparently delighted to see us all, and launched into 'TocarAll Along the Watchtower'. He's big on Bob Dylan covers and it was mostly these I recognised, but there was nothing I couldn't nod my head and chill out to.

    Although the sound he produces is laid-back and mellow, he works hard at it, breaking strings and picks (he had six spares lined up on his mike stand). He performed from 9:30 till gone 11, ended by leaping into the air and twirling his guitar, then came back out in a clean suit to sign autographs. Not bad for someone who's nearly 70.

    Particularly pleasing is that last year I saw Country Joe McDonald, which means that I've seen the first and second musicians to perform at Woodstock. I wonder who else I can collect - are Sha Na Na still together?

  • Bickershaw Festival, 1972

    Nov 17 2007, 10h28 por cage964

その他の出演者はN.R.P.S., The Kinks, Incredible String Band, Country Joe McDonald, Donovan, Brinsley Schwarz, The Flamin' Groovies, Dr.John そして Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band。

    Country Joe & The Fish, live op Woodstock. Met hun nummer "I feel like I'm fixing to die".

    How I Wrote the Rag
    _____________________

    I wrote "Fixin’ To Die Rag" in summer of 1965 after I had been discharged from the US Navy for several years. It just popped into my head one day and I finished it in about 30 minutes. I did not have a conscious purpose in mind although I had been working on another song about the Vietnam War called "Who Am I?" for several days so I had the war on my mind. The "Who Am I?" song was part of a play I was writing songs for titled Change Over, written by Fred Hayden and directed by Nina Serrano. It was performed twice, once on the University of California Berkeley campus and once on the San Francisco State College campus. 1965 was the year that the Vietnam War became big news and a big protest issue with students.

    I was raised in a family of American Communists and so I knew a lot about Capitalism and Communism. The song attempts to put blame for the war upon the politicians and leaders of the US military and upon the industry that makes its money from war but not upon those who had to fight the war ... the soldiers. It expresses the thoughts of a person trapped in the military system and forced to go to war by something called "conscription". Conscription or the "draft" as it was called then was a system which picked young people and forced them into the military and into the war with the only other choice being jail or an attempt to "dodge the draft" for religious reasons or physical or mental reasons. It was very hard to get out of the draft because so many people were being killed in the war that they would take just about any one. The song attempts to address the horror of going to war with a dark sarcastic form of humor called "GI humor". GI humor is a way people have of complaining about their situation so it will not get them in trouble and keep them from going insane in an insane environment: war.

    Today we have a volunteer military but during the Vietnam War many people joined because they thought it was the right thing to do. It was patriotic. Lots of people were drafted. Also lots of people were given the choice of volunteering for the military or going to jail on charges of getting into trouble with the police for one thing or the other. It was a kind of government black mail. During the war people were even forced into the US Marines which was always considered to be a volunteer group because so many Marines were killed in the Vietnam War. The casualty rate for Marines was higher in the Vietnam War than in World War II.

    Een nummer mét inhoud dus!

  • Woodstock 1969 - the complete setlist (streamable)

    Out 23 2007, 22h16 por Nectar_Card

    Roll up a nice fat joint. Inhale. Take a trip back to Woodstock in 1969……

    click here for a streamable tag radio station of all the tracks listed below

    Woodstock Music and Art Fair was a historic event held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km²) dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel (Sullivan County) is 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, which is in adjoining Ulster County.

    To many, the festival exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the "hippie era." Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of this time period appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend. Though attempts have been made over the years to recreate the festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest concerts in music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.

    The event was captured in a successful 1970 movie, Woodstock, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which memorialized the event, became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The concert signaled the end of the so-called "Flower Generation."

  • Another Concert on TV

    Ago 22 2007, 22h39 por KaTeznik

    Hey, I saw on Arte another concert on TV, and wich one : Woodstock !

    Well, two sort of artist did get some sort of echo today :

    The indiscutable ones :
    I Noted :
    * Santana;
    * The Who ;
    * Country Joe McDonald, especially his song about Vietnam ;
    * Janis Joplin doing a little bit too much, but what a voice ;
    * and of course Jimmy Hendrix, a king on stage

    The other sort of artist are the good ones, some forgotten, some still there :
    * Canned Heat, good blues on stage !
    * Joe Cocker, truly a very good interpret this time ;
    * Ten Years After, a very, very good jibe on stage. What a guitar !
    * Jefferson Airplane, innovative, good and she's so beautiful :-)

    On the other hand I'm ok with my TV journal : the only star is the public, and the art of Martin Scorsese is visible in the film.

    Well, the film was worth it !

  • Guthriegenia : This Land Is Your Land

    Jan 5 2007, 16h32 por a-betaSys

    "This Land Is Your Land" (questa terra e' la tua terra ) è una delle più famose canzoni del folk americano, scritta da Woody Guthrie nel 1940. Fu scritta in risposta a "God Bless America" (Dio ferisce l'america) di Irving Berlin.
    Guthrie considerò la canzone irrealistica e compiacente e, stufo di sentire Kate Smith cantarla alla radio, decise di scrivere una canzone diversa, inizialmente titolata "God Blessed America for Me" (Dio ha ferito l'America per me). Guthrie cambiò il testo molte volte, inserendo spesso versi esplicitamente politici antagonisti al Maccartismo che non figurano nelle versioni ufficiali dei testi pubblicati e tracce registrate.

    In particolare queste strofe sono state soggette alle modifiche piu' frequenti:

    1. In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
      By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
      As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
      Is this land made for you and me?

      As I went walking, I saw a sign there,
      And on the sign there, It said "Private Property."
      But on the other side, it didn't say nothing!
      That side was made for you and me.

    Il testo ufficiale:

    This land is your land, this land is my land
    From the Redwood Forest to the New York Island
    The Canadian mountain to the Gulf Stream waters
    This land is made for you and me.

    As I go walking this ribbon of highway
    I see above me this endless skyway
    And all around me the wind keeps saying:
    This land is made for you and me.

    I roam and I ramble and I follow my footsteps
    Till I come to the sands of her mineral desert
    The mist is lifting and the voice is saying:
    This land is made for you and me.

    Where the wind is blowing I go a strolling
    The wheat field waving and the dust a rolling
    The fog is lifting and the wind is saying:
    This land is made for you and me.

    Nobody living can ever stop me
    As I go walking my freedom highway
    Nobody living can make me turn back
    This land is made for you and me.

  • Hippiefest

    Ago 2 2006, 19h32 por PinKkFloyDd

    Veteran booking agent Shelly Schultz recently teamed up with promoter Toby Ludwig and Tattoo The Earth production coordinator Ron Hausfeld to package a festival tour for what they believe is an underserved demographic. Namely, hippies.
    The Hippiefest kicks off in Brooklyn, N.Y., August 3rd and hits several East Coast markets throughout the month. On board are Felix Cavaliere's Rascals, Mountain, Canned Heat, Lovin' Spoonful, Country Joe McDonald, Mitch Ryder, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, Rare Earth, Melanie, Badfinger, Janis Ian, Denny Laine, Terry Sylvester, Dr. Hook, and Blood, Sweat & Tears.
    Hosting the event is counterculture icon Wavy Gravy.
    The idea was cooked up by Ludwig, who produced the Walk Down Abby Road show that featured Todd Rundgren, Alan Parsons, John Entwistle and Ann Wilson. According to Ludwig and Schultz, this is the first time a tour has been geared toward the flower children.
    Because Ludwig came up with the idea for the festival in early May, this tour will be a short one.
    "I think we're only going to do about a dozen dates this summer," Schultz said. "We want to be able to have this up and healthy, with all of the mistakes made this year without killing anybody. We may do 30, 40 shows next year."
    Ludwig added that he was amazed that nothing has ever been done on this level.
    "Well, thankfully," Schultz joked.
    All kidding aside, the producers expect the tour to be a viable summer package that can bring in the younger crowd as well as the baby-boomers. Hippiefest launches August 3 at Asher Levy Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., and will continue through eight more cities in New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Michigan.
    "The period of the '60s is the equivalent of the Renaissance that occurred artistically in Europe. The same revolution in modern art, music and cultural awakening took place then as well," Felix Cavaliere said.
    "The enduring fact is that it [the '60s and '70s] was an era full of new and beautiful works and thoughts. The generations that follow, however, still feel the beauty and richness of the period. The division in our country is worse today than it has been in many years. Music always bridged the gap; it cannot be suppressed."
