I've just re-listened to this track because I saw a shout below which suggested that the Count was sounding too "notesy". I am pretty sure that I am now listening to an inferior second version - the band is more ragged, the piano playing isn't vintage Basie and Lester (if it is he) isn't so loose. I'm pretty sure I was listening to the original last time, and a later, less professionally recorded, version this time round. As dehensey points out, the workings of last.fm are sometimes mysterious!

Classic Big Band doesn't get much better than this. A tight band, with Basie's sparse piano and Lester swinging like mad. Bliss.

One of the drawbacks with lastfm is that it is often impossible for one to play the version one wants to hear. This is particularly the case with jazz where often multiple versions abound. lastfm seems to excel in putting up versions that are both inferior and incorrectly ascribed.

The shout I wrote below was for a different "Lester Leaps In" The one I'm listening to now sounds like the original from 37 or 38. Lester Young was brilliant.

This doesn't sound like the Count on the piano. Too notesy for the way I remember Basie playing, but it's still really good.

Someone's time is a little off, because it says that it's 3 minutes and 9 seconds long, and it just finished at near the 4 minute mark.
