Okay, if you think you know everything about Krautrock and it's not for you; I dare you to find this book and read it. Many of the artists are on the internet, so you don't really even need to buy the CD's. It shouldn't be expensive. On the other hand, this book originally came out in 1995 and it's getting harder to find it nowadays(it's long been out of print). Here it is: Julian Cope, "Krautrocksampler: One Head's Guide to the Great Kosmische Musik - 1968 Onwards", Head Heritage(UK orig.),1995. Out of print, but I heard a new revision is coming out.

It's an excellent source for people who are into collecting plus I think it's the best authority of Krautrock out there. Check it out.

Krautrock is probably the most disappointing scene in the history of music.

First, people tell you that bands like Can and Faust were precursors to modern electronic music. so you listen, hoping to find another Kraftwerk, but you realize that in spite of the occasional bits of musique concrete and oscillator noise you're really just listening to prog rock. you might as well be listening to Frank Zappa or Pink Floyd. but you get used to it. you say, "these bands are still pretty unusual. i think i like them." so you don't lose faith in krautrock, and you start listening to bands like Guru Guru and Amon Duul II. you realize there's a whole wealth of krautrock bands that weren't just recombinant versions of Neu! and Cluster. you find a justification for each band, this one was jazzy, this one was noisey, they're clearly important. but you fail to realize that they SUCK. they have SUCKED you into listening to very bad, slightly progressive hard rock. you realize what's happened, but you say to yourself, why do i like Can and Kraftwerk so much better than these other bands? am i really so mainstream? you give them another try. you realize that for every half hour of wanking guitar solos, you can find about 30 seconds of interesting little sounds. and by this point they've lowered your expectations to the point that those 30 seconds THRILL you beyond measure.

stop listening to krautrock. most of it is very very bad. give Franco Battiato a try instead.
