  • The Decemberists, Riviera Theater Chicago, October 8th 2009

    Out 11 2009, 13h58 por DirkManuel

Given that I had to back out of the last two gigs in Houston that I had tickets for (Gomez, and Green Day) because I was sent to Chicago on gig-day, I was super-bummed to learn that my current loves, The Decemberists, were playing Houston when I was, yet again, in Chicago. But as I was scheduled to be up here for five weeks, I decided I may as well see if there was anyone interesting playing in Chi-Town (correctly pronounced shit-town, Colin Meloy was pleased to inform us) whilst I was here. And joy of joys, I discovered that The Decemberists’ tour was in fact taking them through Chicago on their way from their native Portland to Houston. Huzzah!

So yesterday I bunked off work early (it was still light outside! First time since I’ve been coming here…) and spent a stressful hour and a half driving the 10 miles into Uptown Chicago, to the Riviera Theater. Which turned out to be the perfect venue for The Decemberists - not too large, and with a definitely ’olde worlde’ vibe to it (apart from the irritating “Miller Genuine Draft” projections on the walls…). Kind of reminded me of the New Theater Royal in Portsmouth, mid-renovation.

I don’t know what it is about American gigs and punctuality, but I again managed to miss the support act. The ticket said 7pm; I got there at 7:30, and the roadies were busy setting up for the Decemberists, Laura Veirs - for it was she, in support - having apparently been and gone. Half an hour of minute adjustments to the remarkably sparse ‘light show’, and Colin Meloy, sporting the most impressive set of sideburns this side of Noddy Holder, led The Decemberists onto the stage, to the sound of TocarPrelude, the opening track from their latest album, The Hazards of Love. This was no mere tease, as the band spent the next hour running through the album in its entireity, from beginning to glorious end.

There’s a bit of a growing trend for bands to play albums in their entireity live (probably as a ploy to encourage people to buy whole-album downloads instead of a couple of key tracks), but in the case of The Hazards of Love, which is - unfashionably - a ‘concept album’, there was really no other way to do it. And live, it was outstanding. It’s not my favorite album of theirs, but is certainly the one that is best suited to live performance, being significantly rockier than their usual folk-tinged tales. Colin Meloy even revealed his inner (albeit rather stout) rock god, thrashing his way through the album (yes, you can apparently thrash a twelve-string semi-accoustic guitar!).

Anyone who has heard the The Hazards of Love (and if you haven’t, do so now, you phillistine!) will certainly agree that highlight of the album is My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden’s vocal tour de force (apologies for the cliche, but, there’s no other term for it) on The Wanting Comes In Waves/Repaid. Certainly the entire audience was of this opinion, and seeing that Shara Worden, and the album’s other ‘guest vocalist’, Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark (looking like a cross between Stevie Nicks and Anne of Cleeves), had joined the otherwise-5-piece Decemberists for the tour, anticipation was palpably rising as …Repaid drew closer. When it came time for Worden to do her thing, she strode forcefully to the front of the stage, throwing shapes from the Jim James school of dancing, and just ripped into the vocals. Her voice is impressive enough on CD, but on stage is even more powerful, making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Worden may have only been drafted into The Decemberists for this album, but for the couple of minutes she was center stage (the rest of the time, playing backing guitar/keybards/drums at the back of the stage) she absoultely owned it. It may as well have been her gig - and she was worth the price of admission alone.

The intro tape, playing before the band took to the stage, was Pink Floyd’s Meddle (Fearless, with it’s terraces chorus of You’ll Never Walk Alone confused the hell out of most of the crowd, who were obviously wondering where all the cheering was coming from, and whether The Decemberists had taken the stage without them noticing). This seemed an odd choice at the time, but made perfect sense once The Decemberists were in full swing; the influence was clear, as The Decemberists took in prog, rock, and all points inbetween. And like the Floyd, The Decemberists can certainly put on a Rock Show (capital R, capital S). Albeit one that incorporates a double-bass, lute, lap steel, glockenspiel, and even a hurdy-gurdy. Mr. Meloy stuck to guitar, but made up for his lack of diversification by swapping guitars every song, which he managed to do without missing a strum, even when he broke a string (much to the consternation of his guitar roadie, who hovered stage-left with a replacement guitar until Colin threatened to catch him with a flying, winkle-pickered foot). The band certainly benefited from being expanded to a seven-piece, most notably on A Rake’s Tale (Alright!), where five of them took up percussion, pounding away with admirable aplomb.

With the faithful run through The Hazards of Love over, there was a brief intermission before the band came back and ran through a good selection of songs from their prior albums, including TocarO Valencia!, TocarThe Crane Wife 1 & 2, July, July, Los Angeles, I’m Yours, and a few songs I didn’t recognize (so my Decemberists collection obviously isn’t quite as complete as I thought. Must be missing some obscure Japanese import, or something. Dammit.) The high points were certainly every time Colin Meloy shimmered and crooned his way through his most melodic moments, but even the more linear narratives drew strong applause.

Recognizing that taking Shara Worden on tour just to sing a couple of songs during the first half of the gig was a waste of her enormous talent, the band called Worden and Becky Stark back to the stage for a cover of Heart’s TocarCrazy On You, with the two women doing their best to out-do each other with the vocal histrionics. And, surprisingly, given that her contribution to Hazards… is a couple of twee vocal spots, Stark more than held her own against Worden, unleashing a power you wouldn’t have thought possible from such a delicate fawn of a girl (although she had changed into a blood-red vamp dress for the number). I’m not much of a Heart fan, but this was certainly a high-point (amongst many high points) of the gig.

And then, after a gentle, Meloy-led accoustic come-down, it was all over - all too soon, at barely 10:15pm (barely the middle of the evening). Overall, a great gig. Maybe not the best ever, but certainly up there in my top 10. But that could be because of my deepening man-crush on Colin Meloy (although I now no longer see him as the pudgy Morrissey I once did; maybe a more fey Greg Dulli…), and as the band took its final bow, I just wanted to run over and give them all a hug. Apart from Shara Worden. She’s just scary, and would have probably kicked my ass for just looking at her…

  • [THE DECEMBERISTS - THE CRANE WIFE] Die Spitze der Fahnenstange

  • Top 10 Artists Survey - Pt. 2

    Mai 20 2009, 22h37 por njosnavelinx

I did this for the first time 3 years ago. #1 and #3 are still the same, but everything else has changed, or at least changed order. So here we go. I'm bored, if you can't tell.

    1. Jason Mraz
    2. The Decemberists
    3. Death Cab for Cutie
    4. The Good Life
    5. Colin Meloy
    6. Cloud Cult
    7. Josh Ritter
    8. Radiohead
    9. Elvis Presley
    10. Azure Ray

    1. What was the first song you heard of 6?
Oh gosh, I can't remember that far back. I think it was "Happy Hippopotamus." It was at least something off that album.

    2. What is your favourite album of 2?
They're my favorite band because I love all their albums sooo much. I think "Her Majesty" might be my favorite, but they're all incredible, and that changes daily, depending on my mood.

    3. What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung?
This is kind of unfair because Colin Meloy is the frontman for the Decemberists, so it's funny that they're both in my top 10. Ummm. Probably all of "Los Angeles, I'm Yours," though. Because, as an L.A. native, it really hits home.

    4. What is your favourite song by 7?
Argh all these questions are so much harder this time around. Probably "Wings" but it could be any of a handful of songs that are always battling it out.

    5. What is a good memory you have considering the music of 10?
Hm. I was really into Azure Ray when I was also in a very deep depression (so, up until I was 20, basically). So it's hard to pick out many positive memories. Which is weird because it's not like I get depressed listening to their music -- it's so gentle and beautiful. I guess when I saw Maria Taylor live, that was pretty fun.

    6. Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
All of them. No band breaks my heart in a more painful way, because I have some really bad memories associated with their music. I would say most everything on "Transatlanticism" makes me pretty sad, if I let it.

    7. What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung?
    Same as Question #3.

    8. What is your favourite song by 9?
Oh I could definitely not pick a favorite Elvis song. That's...impossible. MAYBE "Love Me," but no. Impossible question.

    9. How did you get into 3?
About four of my then-friends, spanning the country (one each in Washington, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Michigan), had all mentioned them in a favorable way in a relatively short amount of time, so I gave 'em a listen and fell in love. This was in the time after "Transatlanticism" but before "Plans," whenever that was.

    10. What was the first song you heard by 1?
In 2002, I heard a live version of his later single "You & I Both" and it touched me in a huge way.

    11. What is your favourite song by 4?
Finally, an easy one! "Beaten Path," for sure.

    12. Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
A lot of songs. All the older, slower ones. Like "Fake Plastic Trees," or "How to Disappear Completely," or "Exit Music."

    13. What is your favourite album of 5?
Argh, three songs about Colin/Decemberists? Haha. I mean, Colin has some solo EPs and a solo live album, so. "Colin Meloy Sings Live," I guess. Not too many to pick from.

    14. What is your favourite song of 1?
That live version of "You & I Both" that I first heard.

    15. What is your favourite song of 10?
    Yay, another easy one. "Displaced."

    Howdy,

In an effort to get more people into our annual two-week fund drive (you have until Monday the 11th to help keep us on the air!), I decided to play a bunch of cover songs. People that may not normally be into college radio would be more into hearing songs they knew. Well, maybe it worked. I set a personal record for pledges submitted this year. Small victories. :)

    The playlist:

  • Mother Mother Knows Best.

    Abr 19 2009, 16h54 por DocRenegade

    Mother Mother/Said the Whale - 18th April 09.
The Gateway Restaurant & Bar, Calgary.

What a wait!! Standing in line for almost an hour is not fun. Why they didn't just let everyone in is beyond me as I'm sure there were some thirsty fans all staring at the bar and the comfy lounges scattered all around the place. Not a good start to the evening.

After settling in to a few drinks it was time for Said the Whale to grace the stage with their brand of alternative, folk-driven pop songs. Now I'm not sure if I was the only one in the crowd of 300+ music admirers, but I just got the feeling that lead singer Ben Worcester was trying to pull off the best Colin Meloy impression he could manage. Not to say that it wasn't great, he's showmanship is impressive and had the crowd glued to his bouncing eyes and theatrical movements. After churning through no less than a dozen songs and warming the crowd up like a jam donut, it was time for Said the Whale to depart the stage, heads held high.

After a short toilet break and a refill of the beverages, it was Mother Mother time. Opening with a slightly rap/off beat number entitled "Hayloft", Mother Mother had the revelers at their whim. Their sound is entrancing as is lead singer Ryan Guldemond's "Flock Of Seagulls" hair. How it stays in place is just one of those unsolved mysteries!! By the time the band launched into the second song, the crowd was well and truly behind them, clapping and dancing and echoing the words all around the venue. As per usual the better known tracks got a more rousing response but the new tracks offered up by the band did not disappoint. As Jeremy Page served up an enticing saxophone solo, the crowd went with him every step of the way. Roaring when he hit the high notes and cheering when he dropped the sax from his lips. It was amazing to see how much this crowd 'performed' along with the band. A totally mesmerising performance by a band who deserves all the credit they get. I'm hoping they go onto bigger and better things in the future. I know I'll be keeping an eye on them. Oh and of course I'll be keeping an ear on them too, for what would a band like this be if nobody had ears to appreciate such great songs.

    Kudos to you Mother Mother.
