After Cog cancelled and rescheduled this show I was really hoping they would do something special for us. Nothing overly special, just some sort of acknowledgement. Instead, we got the same setlist they’ve been playing all tour. Well, almost the same setlist.. they decided to cut off a song even. :(

Anyway, other than that little annoyance it was a great show. Always good to have doors as an opener and seeing Moo again was pleasing. Also, after not seeing Silence Is Violence for almost 2 years it was great to see it live again. Normally I wouldn’t enjoy it but it was one of the standout songs for me.

I was up on the balcony the whole show so the recording sounds amazing by the way. Exactly what I want out of a live recording.

From Perth, Australia, Karnivool have at last put together their much anticipated sophomore album titled Sound Awake. Renowned for their high energy live shows and all-round musicianship, their latest effort sees them take a decisive step in the direction of progressive metal. In a similar vein to fellow countrymen Cog's recent album Sharing Space, Karnivool have experimented with extended compositions, including two tracks which clock in at over 10 minutes to close the album. However to compare Sound Awake to Sharing Space sells it somewhat short, as this is an album which sets the bar yet higher for australian metal. The production is razor sharp and every moment has clearly been paid the utmost attention to achieve a cohesive flow from start to finish.

It is officially out on June 5th, but it's currently streaming in full on their myspace for anyone who's curious. Existing fans of their debut album Themata will appreciate this, but it's also a good starting point for anyone unacquainted with their tunes. Sound Awake is a strong effort that will hold its own without qualification on the international stage.

Cog are just one of those bands that no matter how many times you see them live they consistently put on an awesome live show and blow you away. This was no exception. What a good show. Pretty predicatable set with nothing off Just Visiting (please re-tour that album) but a few off The New Normal I didn’t think we’d get so it was ok.

I remember that on the night it was a terrible terrible miserably shitty night outside. It was raining heavily and such a welcome relief to finally get inside the venue. However, it was incredibly hot and stuffy inside and I was close to passing out throughout much of the set. A big thanks to the random girl who got me a water mid set. You were a life saver.

Also, the Queensbridge is a pretty cool venue. I wouldn’t mind it if some international bands played there instead of some of the ‘poorer’ venues around Melbourne. That is, when I’m not getting stabbed up out the front.
