for all the news on Sick Kids scope out http://sickkids.tumblr.com

    Weerd Science - http://myspace.com/weerdscience
Weerd Science is the heart and soul of Joshua Eric Eppard. Often mislabeled as, "nerd rap," Weerd Science is difficult to categorize. Josh crafts his own beats with Wavis (and sometimes CJB or Dirty Ern). The first album (Friends and Nervous Breakdowns) is a compilation of older tracks. The second album, Sick Kids, will be released this winter and features live instruments, many of which were performed by Josh himself, Wavis and CJB. Joey Eppard, stand up bassist Matt Goldpaugh (Matty The Knife), Clip Payne (P-Funk), Adam Wirnoff (Lenny Kravitz, Stoney Clove Lane, Mechanical Bull, Mercury Rev), Majestic, Anni Krueger, Gangstroph The Baptist are featured on SiKi.

    3 - http://myspace.com/officialbandthree
3 was originally formed in 1992/3 as Joey Eppard on guitar, Chris (CJB) Bittner on bass and Josh Eppard on drums. Josh picked up the drums specifically for this band and stayed with them until about 1999. In 1997 they were signed to Universal Records, but then subsequently dropped due to the Universal/Polygram merger. Josh did some studio work and eventually joined Shabutie in 2001. Shabutie became Coheed and Cambria, where he remained until 2006. Josh now puts all his effort into his heart: Weerd Science. CJB remained with 3 until 2001 and became a producer at the infamous Applehead Studio in Woodstock, NY (Coheed and Cambria, Anadivine, Codeseven, The Sleeping, Straylight Run, John Mayer, Tony Levin, Bad Brains are among the endless albums with CJB's imprint). Joey Eppard is still with 3. Their music incorporates many genres and cannot be explained verbally. You've gotta hear it for yourself to understand.

    Joey Eppard - http://myspace.com/joeyeppard
Joey Eppard is a very diverse musician with a distinctive vocal and guitar sound. His style of playing has been referred to as a hybrid of flamenco and slap fingerpicking, but Joey's just Joey. His band is and always has been 3 and he involves himself in many other projects- including several with P-Funk members (Drugs, 420 Funk Mob, Cacophonic fm). He's soulful, funky, and metal.

    Mours - http://myspace.com/themours
Mours is Josh Eppard's developing rock band. It's core members are Josh, Dave "Wavis" Parker and Ant "Session 606" Masington. Together they are Mours. They have an album in the works, but currently have shared only two rough tracks.

    Session 606 - http://myspace.com/session606
Session 606 is a full band project consisting of one young man, Anthony Masington (Mours). The album is a work in progress, however, he has shared several demos and occasionally opens for Weerd Science, solo acoustic. Ant Masington also plays guitar in Weerd Science's live shows.

  • 100 Favorite Songs: 2000-2009

    Ago 23 2009, 18h20 por daydream_set

So I guess everyone is aware of Pitchforkmedia.com’s Top 500 Best Songs of the Decade list.

Partly because I disagree fundamentally with a whole hell of a lot of it (e.g. “Crazy In Love” at number 4 [WTF??]) and partly because this is something I’ve been contemplating since I realized the decade was almost over about 4 months ago, I have decided to compile my own list.

As a disclaimer I should go ahead and warn you that my favorite genres are shoegaze, post-punk, and spacey-rock. I also like ambient and some post-rock, although you’ll only find a handful of instrumentals or songs over six minutes herein. The cream of the crop, basically.

New Weird America, metal sub-genres, IDM, alt-country, lo-fi, garage rock, and other such genres are largely ignored or excluded. Although, once again, there are exceptions.

Songs from 2009 are understandably underrepresented compared to the other years in the decade. But of course that’ll all be taken care of in December. Let’s get started:

    028. M83 - TocarDon't Save Us From the Flames [2005]

    027. Neko Case - Star Witness [2006]

    026. The Joy Circuit - The Last Place On Earth [2005]

    025. The New Pornographers – The Bleeding Heart Show [2005]

The NPs already had several solid power pop albums under their belt by the time follow-up Twin Cinema’s more diverse aspects launched them into a broader layer of music fans. Now, it’s interesting because this is usually when most bands start to lose some of their down-from-day-one fans. Although Twin Cinema was unarguably their most compromised batch of songs up to that moment, this didn’t mean it was full of duds. Chalk it up to the fact that the members of this supergroup had already been recording and playing music for a while prior or chalk it up to something else, but upon its release TC just sounded like the kind of album that the NPs had always been destined to make sooner or later. And this inclination to branch out yielded what is easily their best song to date. It’s a song as grandiose in its composition as it is in its title: “The Bleeding Heart Show”.

The best part is that by the time that glorious harmony of vocals, synths, and everything else is front and center, you’re ready for it. And it could go on forever for all you care, but you know what they say about all good things.

    024. Studio – Impossible [2007]

I’ve never listened to the original Shout Out Louds’ version of “Possible,” even though I know I should. But I imagine that “Impossible” is Studio’s interpretation of what that song would sound like if you were dreaming about listening to it. It reminds me a lot of MBV’s “Sometimes” in feel, except it’s sunny side up.

    023. Cat Power – Maybe Not [2003]

The feminine answer to “Imagine.” Enough said. Nobody melts hearts like Chan Marshall.

    022. Poem Rocket – Reurbanization of the Space [2000]

From an album named for the concept, this song is about Guy Debord’s theory of psychogeography. If you don’t know what that is, I’ll leave you to Wiki it. I’ll just tell you this much: no song that’s about it could ever be boring or stale. And “Reurbanization Of The Space” is appropriately a monster. This song basically sounds like a Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth track beefed up on steroids. The guitars are louder and noisier; the smoggy bass would seep through your speakers if it wasn’t so dense; the drumming is the sound of a thousand starving urbanites banging pots and pans on a cracked and decaying street top, the vocals are unapologetically confrontational, and its subject matter is more dense than a comprehensive class in 19th century Western philosophy. What other song contains lyrics like: “Here is the new trend: examine the implications in the public and the private sector … you’re creating the mythology of the Great American City … the space around the buildings is the soul of the city”?

This song is an ideal introduction to this severely underappreciated and clearly brilliant trio. Even though they released a follow up album a few years ago, Psychogeography was kind of like their going away present to a world that did not appreciate them. And it still doesn’t. But there will come a time when people casually list them alongside Joy Division and Sonic Youth as urban rock behemoths. Just watch.

    021. Interpol – NYC [2002]

It’s because of songs like this (or maybe in spite of songs like this) that Interpol became one of the most ubiquitous indie rock bands at the beginning of the decade. Either way, “NYC” is the sound of them in their prime. It’s a sound as stark and deliberate as it is delicate and mournful.

    020. At the Drive-In – Cosmonaut [2000]

Before the band dissolved, they released an album in ROC that completely changed the game in that genre. With “One-Armed Scissor” getting adequate playtime on many major rock stations in 2000, it was the sound of a jolt of electricity punishing FM rock radio for its recent facilitation of the mundane, the unimaginative, and the just flat-out wimpy. Suddenly, post-hardcore music had reached the suburbs. And even though ATD-I was in the process of breaking-up to pursue less cohesive endeavors, Bixler and Rodriguez had positioned themselves as icons of a new generation of hard rock fans. Their wardrobe of tight black shirts and tighter jeans became the uniform for a broad new legion of vocal American kids fed up with “this Lifehouse bullshit.”

Naturally, the music lived up to the image. Especially on ROC. And absolutely nothing was more simultaneously eclectic and intense as the song “Cosmonaut.” The song begins and within three seconds it’s obvious that its already light years ahead of its contemporaries. All of that deep space imagery that had been in their song titles for a while had finally been absorbed into the music itself. A little Unwound here, a little Swervedriver there, and a little Refused way over there. That’s how “Cosmonaut” goes down. “Is it heavier than air?” You best your ass.

    019. Yeasayer – 2080 [2007]

Spacey, pretty, and with one of the most sinuous bouncing grooves I’ve ever heard in a pop song. Outrageously surreal lyrics too.

    018. National Skyline – Glimmer [2009]

NatSky is unsurpassed when Jeff Garber’s voice is spot-on. That key change comes out of nowhere.

    017. M83 – TocarRun Into Flowers [2003]

Anthony Gonzalez makes a career out of building whole otherworldy environments with his multi-instrumental electronica wizardry. And he’s got some pretty celestial tunes to back it up. But “Run Into Flowers” just doesn’t even sound like it could have been composed by mere mortals.

As for all of you wannabe laptop-electronica wunderkinds out there… do us all a favor and listen to this song (and some others like it) before you even try, okay? Not tryin’ to be an asshole or anything; I’m just sayin’.

    016. Radiant – World [2004]

The rest of this album is available on Last.fm; but it’s too bad it sounds like AROBTTH-era Coldplay. (And that’s being kind.) Thankfully, I’ll always have this song. “World” is powered by chiming post-punk guitar work, thunderous early-U2 drumbeats, tight production, and it’s all held together by Dragan Jakovljevic’s keening voice. The best part is the ascendant ending.

Also, this was the most listened overall song on my Last.fm charts up until very recently.

    015. Film School – Compare [2007]

So effortless and simply beautiful that it should be a crime to be this good.

    014. Absinthe Blind – TocarVanity Calls [2001]

An undeniably potent song. A standout on an album full of decade-long standouts, “Vanity Calls” has some of the best and most unique atmosphere ever laid to tape. The interplay of Adam’s and Erin’s vocals makes it that much more incandescent.

    013. PJ Harvey – TocarWe Float [2000]

PJ Harvey’s most seductive song of her career. If you’re keeping score at home, that makes this song one of the most seductive of all time. Note that this song is called “We Float” and not “I Float.” Because when she croons the refrain, you’re right there with her.

    012. TV on the Radio – Young Liars [2003]

These Brooklyn iconoclasts are well known for making some of the most accessible experimental music of the decade. When you strip this song to its basic elements – (that is, if you remove all of the woozy atmosphere and advanced synthesizers and just use an acoustic guitar) – it’s still amazing. Plus any song that boasts the lyrics: “Someday suppose that my curious nervousness stills into prescience, clairvoyant consciousness; I will be calmer than cream” has to be a classic.

    011. Voxtrot – TocarWrecking Force [2005]

This song certainly lives up to its name. With their EPs, Voxtrot was releasing the kind of music that was so fucking hard to come by mid-decade. Shambling indie rock that sounded like it was recorded on a rainy day in somebody’s bedroom, but is actually way more rich and complex than that.

It’s a song about living life to the fullest. And it doubles as an outright invitation to do so. Actually, a lot of their songs have this kind of fatherly advice thing going on. But sounding more like an ancient philosopher than a straight-laced patriarchal figure. Religion? “You can be your own god if you want to.” Art? You can lose yourself in it. Pain and loss? It’s gonna happen, kid. But it’s a hell of a lot better than what comes out of avoiding new experiences. Trust me… I have the overgrown iTunes library and record collection to prove it.

Now get out there, champ, and climb a mountain or something… (after you finish reading this list, of course.)

    010. Junius – TocarA Word Could Kill Her [2006]

Junius is what would have happened if Interpol hadn’t decided to look toward the growing chorus of collegiate hipsters for their emergent fanbase and instead grew beards, traded in their dapper suits for hooded sweatshirts, and started frequenting sludge metal shows. In case you’re trying to ponder that, it’s a compliment.

The red-and-black is still there, except the red aspects are deeper in hue and dripping with vitality. In fact, I don’t think this band has any other colors within its aesthetic range than those two. The mopey quirkiness of trendy indie rock, however, is not there. In fact, the ferocious Junius will bite the head off of any number of such bands that may just happen to have cutesy animalistic names.

And for my money, they could probably take down a Mastodon or two.

    009. The National – TocarThe Geese of Beverly Road [2005]
Oh, man. That intro is so illuminate and vivid that you can basically watch the fireflies float around under the neighborhood streetlights. This song is about kids setting off car alarms for thrills, yes, but it’s also about so much more than that.

    008. The Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) [2004]

I remember the moment I fell in love with this song. I had been listening to this album casually for days after seeing it nerped on a message board, but on a December night in 2004 I was driving home from an after-work get-together/party kind of thing with some new co-workers. All of a sudden, the song began and upon the moment when that already-familiar bass line entered my immediate consciousness, I was hearing the whole song in my head in fast-forward. Well before I was actually hearing it.

You know how you grow up watching Looney Toons and they use classical compositions therein, but you don’t know it’s, for instance, Bach when you’re like six-years-old? It’s kind of like that. That’s how instantly memorable this song was for me. I’m comparing it to Bach, for Christ sake!
I identify with it, in other words; it completes me; etc.

    007. Lansing-Dreiden – A Line You Can Cross [2006]

Holy huge-as-shit, decadent 80s synth-pop chorus, Batman! Except there’s no underbelly of melancholy to be inferred from it or anything within 20 yards of it. Listening to this track is like having an ice-cream sundae, a KB Toys shopping spree, and your parents getting back together all on the same day. It must be your birthday.

And of course they’re from Miami! But unfortunately nothing else off of The Dividing Island comes anywhere close to this.

    006. Absinthe Blind – The Break (It’s Been There All This Time) [2003]

You see? I know this song is about God and all. And despite being an atheist, I don’t even care about its unquestioning allegiance to the Almighty. Because this song is proof enough that beyond all of the suffering and misery in this world, there is an ultimate glory in which the virtuous and meek shall bask forever.

Or maybe it’s just that I dig songs with really humongous, ethereal and wispy instrumentation coinciding with strong, passionate vocals. A lot.

    005. Poem Rocket – Subway Relocation Memo [2000]

“Please take meeeeeeeeee!” These guitars, do not, in fact, sound like guitars. They actually sound like a subway train navigating one of the most chaotic and unnerving cities you could possibly imagine. It is a real train, but there is no love on it. And it does not, in fact, run on time.

    004. Doves – TocarCatch The Sun [2000]

This is what it sounds like when Doves fly.

    003. The Dismemberment Plan – TocarThe Other Side [2001]

Those drums are absolutely insane and in a hurry to just do something. But then again, those lyrics sound like the kind of social insight that a Beat writer would have come up with after a few grammar courses and a 12-step program. Juxtaposed with that cool-as-a-cucumber but reverberating melody, it’s enough to make your mind bend in several different directions.

To put it simply, [iChange has the best career-finishing trifecta of all time in “Time Bomb,” “The Other Side,” and “Ellen And Ben.” Because after completing your swansong with three songs like that, you have nothing else to prove to anyone. Just dare someone else to eclipse it. Besides, there are actually important things in life other than music. Like T. Mo says, “I’m staying busy hanging with my nephew and tryin’ to keep my eyes on the prize.”

    002. Aveo– Haley [2004]

Not only does William Wilson sound particularly like Rob Dickinson and Mark Hollis here, the bassline refuses to relent; the arpeggiated main riff eventually explodes into a full-blown scorcher; and the density of the atmosphere gives one the impression that this is all being transmitted from a remote distance. These are some of the lyrics, which beg all sorts of questions, both literally and figuratively speaking:

“Haley made a curious remark: “Think we can leap-frog this month? Think we can hop-scotch this whole damned year? You wanna play hide and seek? No, I wanna play at sardines in a bomb shelter with love and A.M. radio.”

    001. Oceansize – Amputee [2003]

Before you can even fasten your seatbelt and take a deep breath, this titan of a rock song blindsides you like doing four shots of four different types of liquor in less than 20 seconds. It hits you right in the goddamn nose, is essentially what I’m saying.

With unquestionably some of the best production that I’ve ever heard on any track in the modern era of recorded music, this isn’t just all about style either. No, sir. Upon first hearing it around the time of Effloresce’s release, this one five-and-a-half minute song was single-handedly responsible for making 20% of my CD collection at the time seem obsolete to me.

The only aspect of this song that can even remotely come close to being called into question is the lyrics. But they don’t matter. I mean, lyrics are great and everything. But if that’s really what you want out of life, go read some fucking poetry. If you want good music, listen to a band that’s both strong and advanced enough to harness and channel the best of what shoegaze, post-hardcore, and art-rock have ever had to offer into one power-packed song.

“Hip, hip hooray we’ll lose again…”

    ----------------------------------------------------------

So congratulations to any of the aforementioned artists or members of bands that may read this list. And thank you for making this truly stressful decade bearable to some extent with your wonderful music.

By September, I should have completed a list of my 200 favorite albums of the decade. Stay tuned.

  • My Musical Journey

    Jan 3 2009, 20h14 por neesh

These albums have shaped me into the wide-ranged aficionado I am today. I grew up in a household with my ma who came to the US from the Caribbean as a young woman in the late 60's (she's a fan of Elvis Presley and the Golden Oldies as well as Hindi/Bollywood tunes in addition to Trinidadian music, Norah Jones and appreciates anyone who's "got pipes on 'em") and two much older siblings. My brother was a house/club DJ so that shit was bumping constantly and is embedded in my brain. My sister was into R&B like Tevin Campbell, Jodeci and whatnot yet also smooth jazz. I was all about solo chick singers, Disney tunes, Show Tunes, Carnival music, salsa, merengue and dance hits from all eras (especially disco and club remixes of pop hits) until the fifth grade when I got my hands on Tragic Kingdom and Razorblade Suitcase. Thus began my foray into alternative rock, interrupted only for a brief moment when I became Bad Boy records obsessed as a tween. I first heard Tocar...Baby One More Time on Z-100 in the limo my sister rented to take my friends and I to the city to celebrate my advancement to teenage-dom. I had heard all about the seventeen year old sensation, but hadn't heard the hit until that moment. I was an instant fan. That eased my Backstreet Boys, N Sync obsession. My long-ass-term ex-boyfriend from middle school until college introduced me to the magic of the archetypes of rock. My closest childhood friend reintroduced me to hindi music. My best dude buddy exposed me to punk, ska and Nyack in my mid-teens. The ex's cousin introduced me to pop punk and The Chance. From there I've veered off into the realms of acoustic rock, post hardcore, alternative metal, new prog, downtempo, post-rock, cover songs, live music, indie rock, underground hip-hop, instrumental and psychedelic rock. I'm currently trying to expand my funk horizons. I will always have a place in my heart for soca, calypso and chutney. I find myself leaning toward more mellow (less screaming and metal -- though I really dig when those styles are tastefully sewn into a tune), insightful lyrical content with insatiable driving beats that still leave room for whinin' up. Oh and actual singing is nice too. Seems to be something recent music has lost sight of. I'm also very intrigued by the use of less common instruments such as violin, lap steel guitar, chapman stick, mandolin, warr guitar, sitar, continuum, thermin, chaturangui, stand up bass... I seek out music that makes me think and feel. I really dig concept albums (a cohesive work of art should have some form of continuity). Along those lines, I love me a good rock opera.

Architect - All Is Not Lost

    http://www.myspace.com/architectkills
RIYL - Found Dead Hanging, Premonitions of War, Shai Hulud, Botch
    Genres - progressive metal, mathcore

THE heaviest thing in existence. That is how I define this album. Tight musicianship? Check. Quality songwriting? Check. Top notch production? Check. Vocals that make me want to fight someone? Check. The album begins with a slow, brooding ambiance that fades into a fast paced assault of drums, bass, and guitar - and finally, at about a minute into the first song, the vocals enter the mix - "I will not be broken and without me the sun will not rise." The album is full up to the brim of political, religious, and some would say pessimistic lyrics. Passionate is the only way to describe them without being biased about them. Agree or disagree with their mindset, I can't deny how powerful this cd is. The three short ambient tracks do well to give the listener some time to collect their thoughts and let their mind settle while taking absolutely nothing away from the pacing of the album as a whole. The last track, clocking in at over 8 minutes, is easily the longest on the album, but is nothing short of perfection in it's closing role.

RIYL - The Receiving End of Sirens, Circa Survive, Minus the Bear, Portugal. The Man

An 80+ minute concept album that inevitably returns to musical themes it touches on in previous tracks, though never grows stale.

    Anberlin - Cities

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anberlin
    http://www.myspace.com/anberlin
RIYL - Mae, Emery, Copeland, The Starting Line
Genres - alternative rock, christian rock

What separates this cd from the rest of the pack I have listed here is that I chose this (same goes for the Stateless album) not for it's overall cohesiveness, but for the simple fact that track after track it never fails to satisfy me. The way an album flows from track to track is a factor that I hold in high regards. The only thing better than an album that flows, is an album that doesn't need to. I'm not saying Anberlin's most recent full-length has no flow, just that I found myself valuing each and every song on their own. The one-two punch of Dismantle.Repair and *Fin were the first two songs I actually listened to from this album. They are, in fact, the final two songs on the album. Over the year I've found myself coming back to this album more times than I can remember. The kicker is that every time I'd feel compelled to listen to it, the feeling would be brought on by the memory of a different song. Aside from the short intro track, I feel that every song on this album (even the 9 minute, epic closer *Fin) could be released as a single.

PS: They put on quality live performances - go see them.

Aereogramme - My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aereogramme
    http://www.myspace.com/aereogrammeofficial
RIYL - Oceansize, Mogwai, dredg, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Genres - progressive rock, alternative rock

My introduction to this band was through their "In The Fishtank" release where they teamed up with Isis. This release took a lot of people by surprise. By that I mean the band took a departure from the sound they were previously known for. All the vocals on the album are clean, strings and piano are given some airtime, and the guitar distortion is retired. The band keeps things simple for the most part, though they still manage to create song after song that doesn't sound half-assed or thoughtless. The lyrics are quaint, memorable, and fit perfectly with the soundscapes they're sung over. When I found out the band was calling it quits earlier this year I was truly sad. And like quite a few other people, I found the title of this, the band's final release, tragically applicable. They said farewell after 9 years together.

People say "Live life without regret." I will forever regret not seeing Aereogramme on their last tour in support of this album.

I thought I was prepared for this... but I was severely underestimating what they could do.

    The Ocean - Precambrian

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ocean_Collective
    http://www.myspace.com/theoceancollective
RIYL - Neurosis, Isis, Old Man Gloom, Cult of Luna
Genres - post-metal, doom metal, experimental

Two discs. Roughly 26 contributors including Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Old Man Gloom), Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders), and musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Fourteen tracks of unrelenting awe. Whether the 'band' is pummeling the listener with riff after riff (see first disc), with ambient passages, or with an assortment of vocal styles from the various contributors, there remains a constant applicable description - epic.

    Stateless - Stateless

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stateless_%28band%29
    http://www.myspace.com/statelessonline
RIYL - UNKLE, The Cinematic Orchestra, Coldplay, Codeseven
Genres - indie rock, trip-hop, alternative rock

Piano driven melodic chill-out rock with a solid foundation of smooth electronics and exceptional drumming. That's a pretty generalized definition of what Stateless is. I say generalized because even though those were the words that I thought of while listening to the band, reading them over afterwards gives no real indication of just how beautiful this stuff is. This is definitely one of the more accessible albums/bands listed here. I can't even remember how many times I listened to this album when it first entered my life. And when I wasn't listening to it, the songs were stuck in my head. What I found really nice about this disc was that even though some songs had a tendency to mesh together due to similarities between tracks, fresh ideas kept popping up, sometimes subtly, and sometimes quite blatantly. The standout track for me is easily 'The Language.' At four tracks into the album, it's a choice opportunity to switch up the pace set by the first three tracks. Not only does the track give off a pulsating beat that'll make anyone bob their head, Lateef The Truthspeaker makes an appearance and lays down a flow in the latter part of the track that gives this song that something special that isn't found anywhere else on the cd. Vocals, production, drumming (especially!) - all phenomenal. I'd also like to note that lead singer Chris James is featured on two songs from DJ Shadow's 2006 album, The Outsider.

*shels - Sea of the Dying Dhow

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%2Ashels
    http://www.myspace.com/shels
RIYL - Mahumodo, Eden Maine, Isis, Rosetta
    Genres - post-rock, post-metal, ambient

Beginning with one of the most triumphant songs ever conceived (The Conference of Birds), Sea Of The Dying Dhow by *Shels starts things off on the highest note possible and sets the pace for the remainder of the album. Ranging from the heaviest distorted guitar riffs to passages of ambiance and acoustic strumming; from passionate screaming to fantastic singing, this may seem to be not the most cohesive collection of ideas, but it really is a well thought out album. The flow from section to section, song to song, is impeccable and leaves very little to nitpick at or to find fault in. The fact that this album is checking in at number 10 on my list is a testament to just how much incredible music has been put out this year. This is the sort of music that deserves a level of attention it will, quite honestly, hardly ever get. With maybe a couple songs that could be viewed as 'radio-friendly' - one being the track "Water" with it's clean vocals, somewhat repetitive structure, and succinct 3:16 length; the other being "Indian Part 2" which lasts a cool 2 and a half minutes and also features clean, memorable vocals - it's an unfortunate reality that this piece of art will slide by most, unappreciated and unnoticed.
Bottom Line: This is composition at it's best, backed up by professional musicianship.

  • The Best Albums of 2007: #50-41

    Dez 10 2007, 4h53 por spectre1982

    The Best Albums of 2007

Here is my take on the best albums released in 2007. By the end of the year, I will have built up to my #1 album of 2007, but I'll start with some notable EPs, the albums that deserve an honorable mention, and albums #50-41.
In thinking about my personal take on 2007, the exceptional volume of good albums released stands out. It doesn't necessarily mean that it was a better year--I look back at 2004 and 2005 and see some incredible releases on top-heavy lists, and I remember that while there was less of a clear distinction as to what my top 10 of 2006 would be, there was little drop-off in quality well down the list. And here in 2007, while I had planned on cutting off a formal list at 40, it now seems like 50 is the only way to go. So, better get things started.

    Extended Play

    Gavin Castleton - Hospital Hymns

Hospital Hymns is the fifth solo release by Gavin Castleton, the second in the conceptual form of a character album. Castleton takes on the identity of a "76-year-old stockroom worker in a hospital whose spirituality makes his co-workers uneasy" and wraps himself up in five organ driven "modern hymns". Each song is warm and carries with it its own kind of eccentricity, perfectly fitting of the character and story it tells. This is the first of three releases by Castleton in 2007, not including his many collaborations. The second is an EP titled A Bullet-A Lever-A Key that tells the story of his own life from now until his own death in 2054. The third is a full length album titled For the Love of Pete, which will be featured in a later installment.

    Telescreen - The Solar Sea

When 4/5 of the band Codeseven, who's album Dancing Echos / Dead Sounds is one of my all-time favorites, decided to team up with Jarod Draughon of Classic Case, I was a bit hesitant to check it out. I was afraid that this new outfit would be unable to recapture the magic that made Codeseven so special. Much to my delight, these guys have managed to make this new project great. Now I'm thirsty for more, and looking forward to a full-length album.

My Vitriol - A Pyrrhic Victory

This EP is really exciting, because it's the first release by My Vitriol in quite some time--6 years to be exact, since the release of Finelines--and it gives a taste of what we might hear from their next full length. "War of the Worlds" is grand.

The Eclectic Collective - The Flux

I saw this band play with little idea of what they were and with no expectation, but ended up having as much fun as I've ever had watching a new band play. Looking around the room, I could tell I wasn't the only one. For a band with more than your average number of players, they are very tight as a unit. Downright grooveworthy in fact.

Streetlights - To Hold the World

Streetlights began 2007 by releasing their first EP To Hold the World, which gives a peak at their rich, upbeat sound. More to come, as the band is getting ready to enter the studio and record their first full-length album.

Portugal. The Man - It's Complicated Being a Wizard

In advance of their second LP Church Mouth, The Man released this heavily synthed and effect laden EP. Ten movements totaling 23:00 minutes make up the disc, which is something of an experiment and not all that similar to either Waiter: "You Vultures!" or Church Mouth. While parts of it are somewhat abstract, other parts are actually quite catchy. Consider bringing it along with you on a short car trip.

    Honorable Mentions

These albums didn't make the top 50, but deserve some mention here.

    Oceansize - Frames
A good listen, but I expected this to be top-10 good and Frames just doesn't live up to 2005's Everyone Into Position.

The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army
Upbeat and fun, the performance of all 20+ members is quite a sight.

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

    Bjork - Volta
Overall a good album. Earth intruders is far and away the best track.

    OneSideZero - OneSideZero
Good to hear something from OneSideZero, with their first album in six years.

A Day to Remember - For Those Who Have Heart
Here's a mash-up of genre's I had never heard before: throaty metalcore and quick-tempo pop-punk. And now, thanks to A Day to Remember, here it is. It works surprising well actually.

The Pineapple Thief - What We Have Sown

Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Vol. II: No World For tomorrow
Claudio Sanchez's Amory Wars series has finally reached its climax. However, the accompanying albums peaked with In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, one of the best albums of the decade and a tough act to follow. It's still early though, this could be another grower.

Armor for Sleep - Smile For Them
Armor for Sleep showing nice growth and improvement from 2005's What to Do When You are Dead

Finger Eleven - Them vs. You vs. Me
Amazing what a few of the "right" singles can do for a band, going back to 2003's self-titled album. Not quite on par with the last three albums, but god nonetheless.

Foo Fighters - Echos Silence Patience Grace

    Rishloo - Eidolon

Shy Child - Noise Won't Stop
Much like their parent group Supersystem, this album has a couple killer tracks (good for dancing, should you be inclined) and a bunch that I could take or leave.

Straylight Run - The Needles The Space
This is the first time I listened to anything by them, and it was pleasantly not what I expected.

Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky

    Moving Mountains - Pneuma

    Caspian - The Four Trees

The Best Albums of 2007: #50-41

    50.
Interpol - Our Love to Admire

Though I don't believe Interpol will ever replicate the kind of brilliance captured by Turn On the Bright Lights, they have succeeded in releasing their third solid album. And in fact, Our Love to Admire is actually an album in which they've shown some improvement over 2004's Antics.
Song Highlights: Pioneer to the Falls, Pace is the Trick, The Scale
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    49.
Mel Gibson and the Pants - Sea vs. Shining Sea

In 2005 I had highlighted two rock/hip-hop fusion groups that had left an impression on me with their releases that year. Not long after that, the first group I had mentioned--The Gym Class Heroes--had exploded as a breakout success. The other group, whom I actually thought had the better album of the two, is still working hard at slowly building up their fan base two albums later. Their latest, titled Sea vs. Shining Sea is again a clash of hip-hop lyricism, drum & bass, and angular guitars.
Song Highlights: Bit of a Buzz, Dead Baby Joke, That Ain't a Knife, Spurs of Steel
    Links: Last.FM - Myspace

    48.
    Sylvan - Presets

This is the sixth album by Germany's Sylvan, but the first that I had stumbled upon. After a year of getting to know them and their back catologue where moody progression is a prominent theme, I can appreciate how the contemporary shift that their music has taken compliments their earlier work.
Song Highlights: For One Day, One Step Beyond, Hypnotized, Presets
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    47.
    Film School - Hideout

This is the second album by Film School that I've heard, the first being their self-titled album released last year. This album left a better and more immediate impression, especially on the strength of songs like Two Kinds and Dear Me.
Song Highlights: Two Kinds, Dear Me, Lectric
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    46.
Ghost Brigade - Guided By Fire

Much like Katatonia, a band from which they draw many comparisons, Ghost Brigade strikes a good balance between melancholic doom metal and careful doses of melodic vocals and instrumentation.
Song Highlights: River at the Rails, Based On You, Disgusted By the Light
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    45.
Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight

Despite near-perfect execution of the nu-metal sound they now define on two albums, Linkin Park was prepared to do things differently for Minutes to Midnight. The music is better and worse off for it, having lost a bit of their edge, but also showcasing a new found maturity. Their trademark angst seems to have found something of a purpose for once, making this the most honest album we've seen from this band.
Song Highlights: The Little Things Give You Away, Hands Held High, In Pieces, Leave Out All the Rest
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    44.
    Hopesfall - Magnetic North

Hopesfall has changed a lot over the years. The post-hardcore screams are almost completely gone, and their sound has continued to grow spacier and more melodic over the past two albums. In fact, the band lineup has changed so much that, starting with their next album, they're not even going to continue using the same band name. So, if this were to be their final album, at least it can be said that it was a good one.
Song Highlights: Paisley; East of 1989, Battle of the Bay; Swamp Kittens
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    43.
Red Fox Grey Fox - In the Land of Bears, Ice, and Rock

This is the debut album by this soft, almost delicate indie/pop group from Minnesota. The thing that stands out most on In the Land of Bears, Ice, and Rock are the sweet, earnest vocals of Peter Miller. The keyboard and light guitars provide a warm, yet open feeling atmosphere for his light falsetto to float and linger through.
Song Highlights: Oh My Goodness! Oh Good Grief! Look at Those Clouds!, Up With Mittens, Down With Gloves
    Links: Last.FM - Myspace

    42.
God Is an Astronaut - Far From Refuge

Every year there are a handful of instrumental post-rock albums released that I will enjoy once, put on the shelf, and then forget about. For all of their beauty and careful composition, there are few that set themselves apart from the rest, and it's true even of albums by such highly regarded groups as Explosions in the Sky, to name one. God is an Astronaut has always been one of the few groups that stand apart for me though, and they continue to do so with this year's Far From Refuge.
Song Highlights: Far From Refuge, Sunrise in Aries, Radau
    Links: Homepage - Last.FM - Myspace

    41.
Tiger Army - Music From Regions Beyond

The first time I listened to anything by Tiger Army, this year's Music From Regions Beyond, I wasn't exactly turned on to it. One song in particular however, Forever Fades Away was simply too good to not put on repeat. And slowly, the rest of this album came along. Part of the process of learning to enjoy this album was the acceptance of the psychobilly style that peppers the album, something that was and is somewhat unfamiliar to me. Now that I have an appreciation for the rest of the album, it always makes for an interesting listen.
Song Highlights: Forever Fades Away, As the Cold Rain Falls, Where the Moss Slowly Grows
