  • Forty Questions About Fifty Artists: End of the Decade Edition

    Dez 17 2009, 0h06 por Evil_Doll_Paula

    1. How did you get into 31? (伊藤賢治)
Mana series and Romancing Saga, I believe.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (MintJam)
The oldest song of theirs on my iTunes is Rival, so I'm going with that. Sounds about right anyway.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29?
It's between KOKIA and Lily Allen... Favorite by KOKIA is perhaps the "Mama, pinku no zou-san dayo!" in ピンクの象. Favorite from Lily Allen, in TocarFriday Night, the line that goes something like "Nice dancing, love, but you should've worn a bra."

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
Chroma Chrome or Raining Jane. Only have an album from the latter, so I guess it'd be that, Diamond Lane.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Andreas Vollenweider)
I think 4: White Winds, Book of Roses, Dancing With the Lion, Down to the Moon.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Chroma Chrome or Raining Jane. キキミミ and TocarWyoming Sky, respectively.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad? (ALI PROJECT)
Most of them, because they're so damn hard to translate. Srsly though, maybe ナルシス・ノワール.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Swing Out Sister)
As much as I like TocarTouch Me Now and some others, I think it's gotta be TocarTwilight World. First and best.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (菅野よう子)
Favorite Yoko Kanno song? Srsly? I guess back in middle school I had an obsession with Wo Qui No Coin. Honestly though, way too many to choose.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (茶太)
I dunno about happy per se, but やまと somehow touches me deeply. Other than that だんご大家族 is a nice cute happy song.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? (Little Wing)
REVERIE -Sound Sketch 'Kino's Journey'- Only one I got.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (新居昭乃)
Tough choice. Top played is オマツリ.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33? (Gym Class Heroes)
Seeing them live in concert at school.

    14. What is your favorite song by 37? (Moloko)
Not sure. My favorite Roisin Murphy is Sow Into You, but that's not the same. Maybe TocarForever More.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (葉月ゆら)
Well 輝石 is gorgeous but I dunno about "happy."

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live? (Hiroshi Yamaguchi)
    None. Just a composer, anyway.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Thomas Dolby)
Oh god I could not tell you. The first song I obsessed over was TocarScreen Kiss though.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (Modest Mouse)
I haven't heard all of them, but of the two I have I think I like Good News for People Who Love Bad News better.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1? (HANA Wakusei Music)
Well, seeing as Se-ko Izumi is really the only member, I suppose that'd be her. This is the same answer I had last time I took this quiz.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Eiya)
    None.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45? (m-flo)
Making fun of the "boom clap boom b-boom clap" at the beginning of Miss You in the school courtyard thing at HS.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Masami Ueda)
The stuff from the Okami OST. No favorite.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Tomohito Nishiura)
The Dark Chronicle opening theme, Endless Adventure.

    24. What is your favourite album by 21? (Laura Veirs)
Somehow I knew this question would come up. Saltbreakers is the first I've heard, and the only one I've listened to exetensively, so that one.

    25. What is your favourite song by 18? (kukui)
透明シェルター, deffo. Also the first one I heard.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
Iain Ballamy or 光田康典. So, Sock Puppets / Flyover, being the opening to Mirrormask, and Time's Scar, probably.

    27. What is your favourite lyric by 3? (下村陽子)
    No lyrics, it's instrumental.

    28. What is your favourite song by 2? (Clouds)
Favorite Clouds song, really? Maybe Wave. 4 pm is also good, and like, a ton of other songs. (Australian indie Clouds)

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Mika Matsuura)
    I'll say Cursed Shinshu Field.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8? (Värttinä)
Stop asking me these things! Most of the songs on Miero I think.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Gnarls Barkley)
    None.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (hicalculator)
Life is Game or Fight it out.

    33. What is you favourite album by 12? (Yo Gabba Gabba!)
All the song collections suck actually. My own rips are my favorite album.

    34. What is the worst song by 46? (Awesome New Republic)
Their songs that aren't the first few of Rational Geographic Vol. 1.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (OLIVIA)
    Bliss Forest.

    36. What is you favourite album by 42?
Rei Kondoh, Hiroshi Ebihara, or 増田俊郎. Okami OST or Naruto OST.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
Iain Ballamy or 光田康典. None for both.

    38. What is your favourite album by 36? (Panic at the Disco)
    Pretty. Odd.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (The Manhattan Transfer)
I'm going with TocarBlue Serenade or TocarThe Offbeat of Avenues.

    40. What is you favourite album by 7? (Sanagi)
I like both of 'em equal. Sailing The Seven Seas though, maybe.

  • well shit. . . .verdict time. .

    Ago 30 2009, 16h39 por KMFCM

    Cave-In – planets of old
Metalcore bands of the late 90s/early 2000s who are still together/have recently reformed after breaking up several times and kind of changing direction a couple of times, Poison the Well and now Cave-In have shown you the way. . . .START PLAYING FASTER THAN YOU DID IN THE 90S! = PROFIT (though, no, not in THAT sense. . .I mean profit as in your old fans that gave up on you say “well, lookit that, you did something I like without just doing what you did on your first record”). No, Steve doesn’t sound like Jeremy Enigk anymore, but that’s alright. This is a natural progression from Perfect Pitch Black. . . but it’s so far ahead of it it’s unbelievable. For the first time in quite some time Cave-In decide to just rock the fuck out. . . .instead of spacing the fuck out. The wankery is toned down quite a bit, and the heavy is turned up (and I guess that’s gonna be a theme of this set of verdicts, bringing back the heavy). They’ve got their old logo again, but don’t think this is gonna be until your heart stops. . the return. . . it’s still another place completely, but I think you’ll enjoy this place almost as much (ALMOST). First song is a sludgy number similar to one or two songs on Perfect Pitch Black, complete with Caleb getting some screams in (and a feedback solo. . .so there’s a little wank), Second song has that vibe too, but then . . . . FAST SONGS. Fast songs? “the red trail”, fast hardcore song. . .who’s doing the vocals on this? I’t sprobably not Steve, but it’s definitely not Caleb. The last track sounds like something Clouds might do. All in all, best I’ve heard of this band in quite a while.

    8.5/10

Future of the Left – Travels with myself and others
One of my most anticipated albums, that I had no reason to believe was coming out anytime soon (because since they’re not exactly metal, I completely lose track of them unless they just happen to be making a rare trip stateside), the new full length by Future of the Left is here. . .and it fucking kills. Not that much difference here. Still got that sludgy bass tone that can hold it’s own without a guitar there (up until I saw them live, I didn’t realize the songs with keyboard had no guitar. . .the bass is just that sludgy), still got those quirky lyrics you cannot help but sing along with even though you may not be sure what the hell they are about. There’s a little more melody. Falco actually sings a lot more on this record than the other one. Other than that though, the songs are still short and kick ass. “I am civil service”, “lapsed catholics” (WHAT A FUCKING CLOSER DUDE!), “you need satan more than he needs you” and “throwing bricks at trains” will be stuck in your head for years to come and after 12 songs you will be once again left wanting more.

    9/10 this shit bounces

    Jesu – infinity
I never thought I’d see the day. I thought (maybe hoped is a better word, if he was gonna keep going in the shoegaze direction, I was hoping he’d go ahead and make that harsh Slowdive record he's been hinting towards with some of his remixes) he’d do a collabo with Kevin Sheilds first. But it’s here. . . .the heavy is back in Jesu. . . .at least for one song. One very long song. The first minute or so, is like Aphex Twin. . .and then. . .BOOM. . sludgy Jesu guitar. ..where have you been?!?!? This isn’t self titled quality shit mind you, but that can only happen once in a lifetime. This is the closest we’re probably gonna hear for a while (unless homeboy is thinking of doing this kind of shit more often. . . . .please?). The next part, remember the last song on “us and them”? It’s like that. Then, it gets so heavy you think he’s gonna start yelling . . .it doesn’t happen though. . . . no. . . wait a while. . . follow the sludgy jesu guitar on a little trip, the kind of trip you’re not expecting because even on the self titled record he’d just repeat the same riff for the half the song. . .and then. . .Godflesh yelling. . . at a part you do not expect it (it’s a little melodic for him to be yelling during. . . .awesome). . that’s only 16 minutes in kids.
This is an almost 50 minute track.

    Yeah dude

It’s longer than Heartache or Ruined.

After that 16 + point, things get kinda Neurosis. . . which, I also did not expect. Listen to the last couple of releases, you forget they’re supposed to have a real drummer. Once that little Aphex twin intro finishes, it’s real drums all the way.

A lot of you have quit jesu. . . .but, you need to hear this.

    8.5/10 this shit smashes

Burnt by the Sun – Heart of Darkness
The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good, wasn’t that good.
I think BBTS realize this, and that’s why they decided to make a way way better album and THEN break up. This is almost Soundtrack quality shit, no question. I don’t even know what else to tell you. Just grab that shit.

    8.5/10 this shit rocks

    Emmure – Felony
I don’t get to review truly bad shit lately, so I had to go with this. I heard the song “felony” and thought maybe this had a shot at being the guilty pleasure of 2009 (“bars in astoria” just had a good ending). Turns out, they are now the second Victory band to go the nu metal route (the first, of course being, Bury Your Dead. . . .who I haven’t bothered with, hence there being no bad review of them.) You know how I say a band “writes a better slipknot album than slipknot”? Well, this is one of those cases, except there’s no speed. It’s the same breakdown after breakdown after breakdown thing they’ve been doing since they decided to not be the second coming of Eighteen Visions anymore (man, what happened to you guys?). No more low vocals either. In fact, this guy sounds like the guy from Car Bomb now. . . .and I know I’m the only person in the world that actually likes Car Bomb . . . .and he’s singing a lot. . .and it sounds like (who’d have thunk it) Corey Taylor (if Corey Taylor thought he was Chino Moreno). He’s also still overdramatic as hell, which is just funny because I’m pretty sure he’s not singing about anything as personal or whatever as he was on “. . .Gallows”. Can’t decide if they’re a tough guy band or a .. . . . whatever kind of band has a little boy sulking in his room on the cover of their album.
. . . why does Ion Dissonance look up to this band?!?!?!?!. . . .
People, just listen to Plagues. It’s pretty simple, crushing, mosh type of shit that’s better than this in every way. Seriously. Listen to that band instead. I’m gonna give you a link. http://www.myspace.com/weareplagues
    There, go listen to that.
Click on the song “dreams of the morbid”, and hear this kind of shit done CORRECTLY.

    1.5/10 this shit blows

The Psyke Project – Dead Storm
After a record this good, “samara” is officlally obsolete. They might as well start counting “daikini” as their first record. These last couple years, this band have found their stride. It seems like only last year Apnea came out. . .because it came out in the USA last year :) . Now, with US distro in hand, they set out to lay waste to everything they’ve done before. Psyke are now a way downtuned Envy without the abundance of pretty parts. They’ve kept the songs under 10 minutes, increased the heavy and opted to not sing EVER (I liked “not in my time”, but it did seem like a bit of a non-sequitor on that record). The highlight? “forget the forgotten”. This is the type of song you want to see the band live for the sole purpose of singing along with said song. I hope dude is ready to give up the mic. I don’t know if the Psyke ever got pile-ons at shows(maybe in the samara days), but they’re gonna get ‘em now.

    9/10, this shit goes

    . . .next time
    A Place to Bury Strangers
and I really really really really hope, the_network

  • New cloud type? It would be 1st since '51

    Jun 16 2009, 5h58 por Milkshake8

It's an exciting time to have your Head In The Clouds.

Meteorologists are debating whether to seek formal Recognition for the first new cloud variety since 1951, prompted in part by Strange clouds photographed in 2006 by Jane Wiggins, a paralegal in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She later posted the image she labeled "Armageddon" on the website of the Cloud Appreciation Society, an England-based group of more than 16,000 cloud enthusiasts created in 2005.

After several more photos of similar Formations were posted on the site, society founder Gavin Pretor-Pinney asked the royal meteorological society in Reading, England, if they depict a previously unclassified cloud type.

Wiggins' photo is part of the evidence meteorologists there are weighing as they decide whether to ask the world meteorological organization to recognize the undulus asperatus, Latin for "turbulent undulation."

Pretor-Pinney, author of several books about clouds, says the find is exciting because it shows what "changing, amorphous, ephemeral things clouds are." The evolution of the Internet and digital cameras have created "a new perspective on the sky."

Paul Hardaker, Royal Meteorological Society chief executive, calls the clouds "astonishing. ... It's not every day you get a new cloud." A four-person committee is studying whether the clouds share key characteristics: Wind, Temperature and Pressure.

If the panel concludes they are a Distinct NEW Cloud Variety, the society will recommend that the World Meteorological Organization add them to its International Cloud Atlas.

Peggy LeMone, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., saw a similar cloud formation 30 years ago in Missouri. "When I saw it I didn't know what to call it," she says.

The Clouds might be caused by a moist layer of air above a dry layer without enough wind to mix the two, LeMone says.

Luke Howard, an English pharmacist, proposed the Latin naming system for clouds in the early 19th century. There are four main clouds types, with additional classifications that reflect their altitude and other characteristics. In all, Pretor-Pinney says, about 80 cloud varieties have been identified.

Pretor-Pinney says people are fascinated by Clouds because "they're the most poetic parts of nature — a part of nature that's in constant flux and change. They have an effect on our emotions ... and Imagination." The Sky, he says, is "the last wilderness."

Wiggins, whose photo was featured in a BBC documentary and by National Geographic, says she's honored that her image "could have a place in history."

"My head is always in the sky looking for something that's unusual," she says. Since the day she photographed the odd clouds, she says, "I have never seen anything like that again."

  • HOWL Sign To Relapse Records

    Mai 29 2009, 16h51 por RelapseRecords

Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Providence, RI’s Howl.

Howl (Vincent Hausman – guitars, vocals, Andrea Black – guitars, Robert Icaza – bass, Timmy St. Amour – drums) formed in 2006 and have already toured extensively with many like-minded bands including Kylesa, Torche, Young Widows, Coliseum and more.

Howl’s Hausman commented on the signing; “We're very excited to be signed to Relapse. Right from the start, we've gotten the sense that the folks at Relapse care about the bands and their creative vision first, which is important in an industry too often concerned purely with profit, image, and commercial viability. Relapse also has an impressive roster of former and current bands, many of which we grew up listening to. It's humbling to now be part of that family.”

Relapse will first issue Howl’s debut, self-titled EP this summer as the band continues writing for their first full-length. The EP will feature brand new artwork that can be previewed here. Audio samples taken from the EP can be heard now via the band’s MySpace page: www.MySpace.com/HowlHeavyMetal.

Hausman also commented on the reissue and forthcoming material: “We're very happy about the tremendous response we got from the demo, and we’re excited it will see a proper release. In the meantime, we've been writing new material for our upcoming full-length and if you liked what you heard on the demo, you'll love what you'll hear on the album! The new stuff is darker, more developed, and everything is more extreme. Expect faces to melt.”

Howl recently confirmed to perform as part of the official BrooklynVegan-BBG showcase on June 14th in Brooklyn, NY as part of the inaugural Northside Festival. They’ll play alongside Doomriders, Zoroaster, Sourvein, Clouds, and more. More information on this showcase can be found here and a complete listing of Howl tour dates can be found below with more to be announced soon.

Stay tuned to www.RELAPSE.com for forthcoming Howl news / album release / tour information. Additional information will be made available via the HOWL MySpace page: MySpace.com/HowlHeavyMetal and Facebook.
