  • my first scrobbled year...

    Jun 26 2009, 17h18 por zachspence

So being obsessed with lastfm for a little over a year now, I've decided to reflect on what my ears have fell upon.

    1. What's your favorite song by 15?
Grateful Dead - China Cat Sunflower

My favorite version is probably China Cat Sunflower - I know You Rider @ Field Trip 08/27/72

That is a tough question to start this things off...

    2. How did you get into 20?
City and Colour - I am not too sure when was the first time I heard Sometimes. It came out in '05, but it must have been a year at after at least. Bring Me Your Love

    3. Who is your favorite member in 1?
The Avett Brothers - "I wonder which brother is better"..... This is messed up making me decide which brother I like better. I am going to have to say Seth.

This is probably what twisted my arm -

    4. What’s your favorite lyric bit by 31?
    Tokyo Police Club -

    TocarCitizens of Tomorrow

    "I have a microchip
    Implanted in my heart
So if I try to escape
The robots will blow me apart
And my limbs will go flying
And land before the ones that I love
Who would wail and would weep
But the robots would keep them at bay
    While I shut my eyes
    For the very last time.
Citizens of tomorrow be forewarned. "

It reminds me of my favorite Kurt Vonnegut's book Player Piano.

    5. Have you ever seen 22 live?
Ottis Redding - The closest I have come to a live Otis show is putting some change in the Juke box and letting my soul travel back in time.

Out of my top 50 I have seen 27 of them live. Last night would have made it 28, but the NBA drafted delayed me making the opener. Fuck the Knicks for wasting my night, and I hate Minnesota for taking my boy Johnny Flynn. I wanted him in NY!

Yup just another reason why it is IMPOSSIBLE to truly become a Knicks fan.

    6. What's your favorite album from 10?
Horse Feathers - This is a toss up. I know they just have two LPs; Words Are Dead and House With No Home, but in my ears they are pretty much interchangeable. I guess the objective of this list is to not be impartial and decide.

okay - House With No Home

    7. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
Modest Mouse - Well I wanted a MM shirt badly, but one specifically. I wanted the green one which ended up being the ladies version. That didn't scare me away, but purchasing the large still wasn't large enough for my scrawny ass so I gave it away.

I have all of their music, and just picked up that orange 7".

    8. What is a good memory you have of 7?
Frightened Rabbit - I have been listening to these guys for a while. My fondest memory would have to be their show at Le Poisson Rouge. Their whole set list was determined by the audience. I learned that the artist themselves make for better song selection, but it was my first show of that nature.

The set started with My Backwards Walk which proves my point about leaving it to most uneducated audiences.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
Langhorne Slim - Ha this question is funny. Sean is actually the same age as I am and we have other things in common too. Ha!

    10. When did you first get into 8?
Mason Jennings - He's been around awhile prior to retiring my turntables. He however was one of the first people I got into when I picked up my guitar. Circa 2002?

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
My Morning Jacket - Anyone with ears? I guess the most evident would be my Bonnaroo crew. We've seen MMJ a number of times. Roo '08 arguably the best live show I have ever seen!

    Sick cover.

    12. Which song did you first hear from 16?
Arcade Fire - I am not sure. Definitely something off of Funeral. Possibly Rebellion (Lies)

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
The Black Keys - TocarThe Lengths

Doesn't that song do it for everyone?

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?
Ray LaMontagne - TocarYou Are The Best Thing

Man I hate that song. He has some gems to hate, but some gems to love too.

    15. Why do you like 14's songs?
Electric President - First off Ben Cooper is the man. My ears crave his music. Every LP he releases, whether it be Radical Face or Patients is constructed flawlessly. The entirety of each work is a body of art that needs to be explored.

    16. Where did you first hear 6?
Fleet Foxes - I jumped on them pretty early. I heard Textbook Love and In The Hot, Hot Rays prior to their 2008 EP and LP. Not sure where those tracks are from?

    17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them?
Bon Iver - I first heard Justin sing in 07, but I am sure he sang for pretty much all of his 28 years of existence.

    18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory?
Peter and the Wolf - Ummm, no. I guess the only bad memory is why is he on my first page of artist. I liked the dude, but it surprises me every time I see him listed.

    19. When did you get into 17?
Death Cab for Cutie - It took me a while. I hadn't really thoroughly examined their music up until a few years ago thanks to a friend. I am still listening.

    20. How long have you been into 9?
Chad VanGaalen - I remember discovering TocarGraveyard and TocarRed Hot Drops and throwing those songs on my playlists. I believe that was sometime in 2006.

    21. If 11 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
The Felice Brothers - Well I saw them as close to 3 blocks from my apt in BK and as almost 900 miles away in the Fields of Tennessee. Obviously they weren't the deciding factor for attending Roo '08, so nope, I would not travel 300 miles to just see the Felice Brothers. If it was to get drunk with them, than that is a different story.

    Prior to Simon leaving......

    22. How many CDs do you own of 12?
    Port O'Brien -

    The Wind and the Swell
All We Could Do Was Sing
    Winter

    23. Does 21 have a song that makes you cry?
Ben Kweller - Red Eye definitely has potential.

    24. Does 27 have a song that makes you happy?
Broken Social Scene - TocarLove and Mathematics. My two favorite things.

    25. Does 23 have a song that makes you smile?
Greg Laswell - I'd Be Lying

The reason is because the first two seconds of the song makes me think it's Talib Kweli's The Blast.... Right?

    26. What's the last song you've listened to from 28?
Cloud Cult - Journey of the Featherless

    5/14/2009

    27. Is there a song by 32 that you've listened to more than 30 times?
Dr. Dog - After seeing who was in spot #32, I automatically decided nope, no way there is 30+ plays on a song. I was wrong.

    TocarThe Breeze +45!

    28. What is a song from 50 that you've only listened to once?
    Radical Face - No way.

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24?
Cold War Kids - Two no ways in a row. I only put music in my ears on want too listen to.

    30. What song got you into 40?
    Beck - Danger Mouse

    31. What is your favorite single by 25?
The Raconteurs - Carolina Drama. Seeing Jack rip this shit live solidified it for me. Actually need to hear this joint ASAP.

    32. If 49 hated you, what would you do?
Vetiver - Well we rubbed shoulders at Bell House and there was no hate. So that squashes that rumor.

    33. What would you say if 43 or one of the members from 43 asked you out?
Chris Wall - I hate that he has this spot. He shouldn't be in my top 100. I just had a hard time digesting his 2008 LP and it got a lot of plays that I didn't really hear.

I would probably respectfully decline. Unless it was Ben and then I would try to move in on Zoey!!

    34. Would you care if 41 had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
Leonard Cohen - He is a pimp. He probably has like 7. I promote pimping at 74.

    35. Who has the best voice in 46?
    Matt Costa - Arguably?

    36. Do you think 26 is/are good looking?
Tea Leaf Green - only when sporting the mu mu's.

    37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by 36?
Throw Me the Statue - Moonbeams

    38. How many CDs do you own of 30?
David Karsten Daniels - Just one [album artist=David Karsten Daniels[/]Fear of Flying[/album]. TocarJesus And The Devil is my favorite jam of his however so if any of you have [album artist=David Karsten Daniels[/]Sharp Teeth[/album] send it my way! Please.

    39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad?
    Cat Power - I Don't Blame You

I dig the jam, but it irks me.

    and she is so lovely.

    40. Which member from 39 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group?
Benoît Pioulard - He is ranked way too high in my ears!

    41. What does your favorite song from 48 remind you of?
Deer Tick - TocarThese Old Shoes nothing.?..

    42. Did you hate __ at first?
I am missing someone in my top 50 and they go here?

    43. Does your best friend also listen to 33?
The Books - Nope. Figuring out the first part of the questions is the tricky part. All those considered, one of them has had some listens I am sure.

    44. Do you think your parents would like 37?
Conor Oberst - Hmmmm, Dana Dukes... He may like some of it. I haven't given him any Conor however, he is more of an Avetts / Neil Young kind of dude.

    45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance?
The Dodos - Nope. Maybe sway.

    46. Have you ever seen 34 in person?
    M. Ward - No I have not. However once Monsters of Folk comes my way I will be there.

    47. Do you like 44's name?
Samamidon - It actually confuses me. Is it Sam Amidon or Samamidon? After the confusion clears, I am fine with it either way.

    48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with?
JBM - Nope, but I will reiterate that I missed him perform last night, I literally walked in as he was exiting the stage. Some say it was the draft some say it was the brown?

    49. Do you know anyone that hates 39?
Jessica Lea Mayfield - If so, I will punch you in your dome.

That is a dope pic of her and her bro killing it!

    50. Have you ever danced to a song from 35?
Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer. You dance to Dr. Dre right?

  • Top 10 Artists Survey - Pt. 2

    Mai 20 2009, 22h37 por njosnavelinx

I did this for the first time 3 years ago. #1 and #3 are still the same, but everything else has changed, or at least changed order. So here we go. I'm bored, if you can't tell.

    1. Jason Mraz
    2. The Decemberists
    3. Death Cab for Cutie
    4. The Good Life
    5. Colin Meloy
    6. Cloud Cult
    7. Josh Ritter
    8. Radiohead
    9. Elvis Presley
    10. Azure Ray

    1. What was the first song you heard of 6?
Oh gosh, I can't remember that far back. I think it was "Happy Hippopotamus." It was at least something off that album.

    2. What is your favourite album of 2?
They're my favorite band because I love all their albums sooo much. I think "Her Majesty" might be my favorite, but they're all incredible, and that changes daily, depending on my mood.

    3. What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung?
This is kind of unfair because Colin Meloy is the frontman for the Decemberists, so it's funny that they're both in my top 10. Ummm. Probably all of "Los Angeles, I'm Yours," though. Because, as an L.A. native, it really hits home.

    4. What is your favourite song by 7?
Argh all these questions are so much harder this time around. Probably "Wings" but it could be any of a handful of songs that are always battling it out.

    5. What is a good memory you have considering the music of 10?
Hm. I was really into Azure Ray when I was also in a very deep depression (so, up until I was 20, basically). So it's hard to pick out many positive memories. Which is weird because it's not like I get depressed listening to their music -- it's so gentle and beautiful. I guess when I saw Maria Taylor live, that was pretty fun.

    6. Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
All of them. No band breaks my heart in a more painful way, because I have some really bad memories associated with their music. I would say most everything on "Transatlanticism" makes me pretty sad, if I let it.

    7. What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung?
    Same as Question #3.

    8. What is your favourite song by 9?
Oh I could definitely not pick a favorite Elvis song. That's...impossible. MAYBE "Love Me," but no. Impossible question.

    9. How did you get into 3?
About four of my then-friends, spanning the country (one each in Washington, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Michigan), had all mentioned them in a favorable way in a relatively short amount of time, so I gave 'em a listen and fell in love. This was in the time after "Transatlanticism" but before "Plans," whenever that was.

    10. What was the first song you heard by 1?
In 2002, I heard a live version of his later single "You & I Both" and it touched me in a huge way.

    11. What is your favourite song by 4?
Finally, an easy one! "Beaten Path," for sure.

    12. Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
A lot of songs. All the older, slower ones. Like "Fake Plastic Trees," or "How to Disappear Completely," or "Exit Music."

    13. What is your favourite album of 5?
Argh, three songs about Colin/Decemberists? Haha. I mean, Colin has some solo EPs and a solo live album, so. "Colin Meloy Sings Live," I guess. Not too many to pick from.

    14. What is your favourite song of 1?
That live version of "You & I Both" that I first heard.

    15. What is your favourite song of 10?
    Yay, another easy one. "Displaced."

Jesus fuck am I bored to be doing this shit.

    1. How did you get into 29?
Wire: I read the review of the triple pack of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154 on Pitchfork and downloaded it on the spot. The descriptions of the albums combined with the fact that the first two had (rare) perfect 10s made them seem irresistible. I wasn't disappointed.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
TocarSleep was the first track I heard by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 40+ plays later, it's just as transcendent as the first time I heard it. Nothing feels better than when the horns kick in shortly after the 16-minute mark.

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
Um. All of TocarAgoraphobia? Thanks, Deerhunter.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
    The Lemon of Pink

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
I own all of Stars' studio albums, and Set Yourself on Fire is easily my favorite, but Heart and In Our Bedroom After the War have some great songs as well.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Wow, that's actually a really tough question. R.E.M. is one of those scarily consistent bands, and just about any random single would be just as worthy of the title as any other. But, here are a couple from which I could pull a favorite, maybe: TocarThe One I Love, TocarOrange Crush, Losing My Religion, and Man on the Moon

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
Well, being that New Japan Philharmonic is actually an orchestra, there are probably tons of them! I listen to Symphony of Evangelion the most by them, which has quite a few sad "songs."

    8. What is your favorite album by 15?
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory easily takes the cake, although my favorite songs by Dream theater can be found on Octavarium

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Everyone knows that A Day in the Life is the Beatles' greatest song, bar none. Lennon, McCartney, and orchestral bliss.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
There isn't really a Led Zeppelin song that I would describe as making me "happy," besides maybe Rock and Roll. Um. Oh, and The Crunge, maybe.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Admittedly, High Society is the only album I've heard by Enon, so I'd have to say that.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Sleepwalker is probably my favorite and also their best, but I also love TocarGhost Love Score and The Siren. Actually, these might as well be equal, but Tarja's voice in Sleepwalker is strikingly beautiful. I'm staunchly opposed to New Nightwish.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
My favorite memory involving Neutral Milk Hotel is probably riding in my friend's car, singing along to 1945.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
TocarOne Evening is probably my favorite Feist song by virtue of the fact that she sounds incredibly sexy in it.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Nothing by Brightblack Morning Light really jumps out – it's mostly serene and peaceful, which I think is part of their appeal.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
I don't even know who my 25th most-listened to artist is, but I can tell you that the answer is 0.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
I know it probably makes me a total square, but TocarFloat On was honestly the first song I ever heard by Modest Mouse. Yeah, yeah, I'm a sad excuse for a indie kid.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Homogenic will forever be Björk's masterpiece.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Sarah is probably my favorite member of Arcade Fire. Violin is instrumental to the emotional impact of their music, especially in their early work, and they're lucky to have such a talented violinist.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    No.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
A good memory involving Elliott Smith... hrm, watching Good Will Hunting for the first time with my boyfriend comes to mind, which features a number of his songs.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Cloud Cult, hah! That's a funny question. I'll go with either You Got Your Bones to Make a Beat, Washed Your Car, or Take Your Medicine.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
    By Alkaline Trio? I haven't a clue.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
9 Times That Same Song by Love Is All[artist]. Such a spaz album.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
TocarAin't No Way features Aretha's best vocals on record, but she does a chilling cover of A Change Is Gonna Come as well. Other than that, Chain of Fools (especially the unedited version).

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
TocarLovefool was my first exposure to The Cardigans, as I'm sure it was for most.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
Not to be cliché, but Daydream Nation really is Sonic Youth's best album.

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
That's a hard question considering I love a lot of them for different reasons. I'll go ahead and say that TocarCause = Time is Broken Social Scene's best song, but I really love TocarKC Accidental, TocarStars and Sons, TocarIbi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day), Tocar7/4 (Shoreline), TocarFire Eye'd Boy, TocarWindsurfing Nation, etc. Really, there's not a bad track on either You Forgot It in People or Broken Social Scene.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
I'm pretty sure that [track arist=The Flaming Lips]Do You Realize??[/track] was the first song I ever heard by The Flaming Lips, but I can't be certain.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
Argh! Picking favorites for the higher-up bands is so difficult. For Architecture in Helsinki, it's either TocarDo the Whirlwind, TocarMaybe You Can Owe Me, or Like It Or Not.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    None!!

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Lacuna Coil is a metal band – they don't specialize in happy. But I'll say that TocarStars comes the closest.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
My God. Sigur Rós' Ágætis Byrjun is so damn good.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?
Eh, Dane Cook's a comedian, and I can't think of a bit that I particularly dislike by him at the moment, but they're not all good; that's for sure.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
TocarHigh Rise was the first song I ever heard by Ladytron because it's the first song on Witching Hour

    36. What is your favorite album by 48?
Buh. It's been so long since I've listened to Tori Amos that I honestly couldn't tell you.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live?
    Zilch.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36?
Bell Orchestre? Probably Recording a Tunnel (The Horns Play Underneath the Canal).

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
First song I ever heard by Koji Kondo? Hah! The theme music to Super Mario Bros., of course!

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
Oh, this couldn't be any easier. Loveless is My Bloody Valentine's masterwork.

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
No, actually, my favorite songs by We Are Scientists are actually somewhat depressing.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41?
Their only album, Give Up. Song would have been a much harder endeavor for The Postal Service.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Romantic Rights really gets me going. <3 Death From Above 1979

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Radiohead? Ranting among friends about how they're no tthe second coming, and – for the most part – make really horrible music.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35?
TocarLove Reign O'er Me takes the cake for The Who

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Oh, God, is there! TocarI'm Always in Love by Wilco puts a ridiculous grin on my face at times.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4?
    The Woods, Sleater-Kinney's swansong.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
I don't know any of the names of Caesars members.

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
TocarWet and Rusting was my first song by Menomena at the recommendation of a friend. I do like their music a lot, but it's not like Wet and Rusting at all, for the most part.

    50. How many albums do you own by 20?
Serena Maneesh? I own one album and one EP.
