    Dez 2 2009, 20h41 por no_conclusion

Oakland trio Clipd Beaks have recently announced a new album, the follow up to their 2007 debut Hoarse Lords. The new single Blood is available for download below, as well as Visions from this spring's Visions/Dank Swamp 7" (available here). [via]
To Realize drops January 26th on Lovepump United, hopefully delivering more quality Drum's Not Dead-esque experimental noise rock.

    Visions

(If you put the titles together you get the name of Jay Retard's debut record!)

Toy District were formed in September of 2007 by Mario Becerra and Esteban Reynega. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, they have found much of the inspiration for their music from this amazing city. They write, rehearse and record their music in their studio overlooking the Los Angeles River in the heart of the city's Toy District. The band has added drummer Sonny Michaels from New Jersey and bassist John Northup who is also from L.A. to complete this musical odyssey.

Shamans and Smyths are a four-piece hip hop group out of Long Beach, California. Consisting of an M.C., D.J., bassist and a drummer, the group also incorporates a variety of musical samples via the Akai MPC, as well as various percussion instruments. This musical lineup allows for a dynamic and original sound that is topped off by vocalist Zarathustra’s vivid and erudite lyrics that range in theme from community building and social-political consciousness to classical mythology and literature. Still relatively new upon the scene, Shamans and Smyths are quickly establishing a reputation as a must-see live act.

6:45 PM, $20 advance, $22 day of show
A quick listen to these guys’ Myspace page shows they are not messing around. Formed in 1994 in Mexico City, Sektacore play a musically dense, ridiculously energetic mix of ska and hardcore. After releasing Terrorismo Kasero on an indie label, the band made the move to Sony Music, who released Morbos Club. The band began touring outside of Mexico, hitting Europe first, where their sound and explosive stage show was a huge success. We’re proud to welcome them back to Los Angeles for these two evenings of hi-powered music.

    Sunday, September 21st
SektaCore, Union 13, 8Kalacas, Los Kung Fu Monkeys, MasTurbo, Los Arambula, Amenaza
6:45 PM, $20 advance, $22 day of show

    Thursday, September 25th
    Cold Forty Three, Runon Fragment
    7:30 PM, $10
From the Garage to Your Speakers is both Cold Forty Three’s motto and the title of their debut album. The band have been going since 2002, and have shared the stage with Eve 6, Kris Roe of the Ataris, Daphne Loves Derby and Hellogoodbye. They joined forces with producer Tomas Costanza (This is Hell, Diffuser) to make From the Garage…, and the results reveal much inspiration and hard work. CFT’s music is firmly entrenched in the melodic pop punk tradition, but stretches beyond to reveal thoughtful introspection and even string arrangements (check out Apartment 2306). Keep an eye on this Los Angeles-based band.

    Thursday, October 9th
Genghis Tron, HEALTH, Yip Yip, Clipd Beaks
    8:00 PM, $12
Genghis Tron want to eat your brains. Well, maybe they don’t, but they do want to poke at them a little. Their new album, Board Up the House, evokes vivid emotional responses from panic to relief, hope to despair, and just about everything in between. The best way to manipulate moods in such a way is to manipulate sounds, which is what Genghis Tron does best.

Forming four short years ago in Poughkeepsie, New York, Genghis Tron set out to create something left-of-center, and like their musical tastes, that couldn’t be easily pinned down. With Mooki Singerman’s varied vocals, Michael Sochynsky’s keyboard wizardry turning blips and beeps into pulsating rhythms, beats, and ambient backdrops, and Hamilton Jordan’s fret-board shredding and stream of memorable riffs, Genghis Tron created something that can only be described as new and totally unique.

    Thursday, October 16th
Four Year Strong, I Am the Avalanche, This Is Hell, A Loss For Words
7:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
"We just play exactly what we want to hear," explains Dan O’Conner, referring to Four Year Strong’s combination of hardcore and pop-punk. Sharing an average age of 20 years old, these five bearded guys have already self-released an EP, making themselves known on the Smartpunk Top 100 sales and Purevolume's "most played" charts. The band built their own stage sets, booked their own tours, and made their own music their way. The debut full-length, Rise or Die Trying, premieres September 18th on I Surrender Records. Already, the album has generated an excited buzz across the web, with over 45,000 plays on each Purevolume and Myspace with nothing more than a taste of what Rise or Die Trying will bring.

    Friday, October 17th
The LBC (Sublime tribute), Stonez Thro
7:30 PM, $12 advance, $15 day of show

    Wednesday, November 12th
The Classic Crime, A Change of Pace
7:00 PM, $12 advance, $14 day of show
In talking-up the sophomore album from Classic Crime, vocalist Matt MacDonald says,
"The Silver Cord is a metaphor from literary history dating back to the Torah and the Old Testament. There are also numerous stories of people who have had out of body experiences on hospital beds who have seen the Silver Cord. After being proclaimed dead and then coming back to life, many have made reference to a small tinsel-like silver thread which connects their mortal bodies to their immortal souls. The idea is that when the cord is severed, you pass on. It's impossible to think about this cord without realizing how fragile life truly is. Every song on this album follows that theme in some way. And while there are songs on the new record that could have easily been on (first album) Albatross, we wanted more of a contrast from song to song. This is the three-dimensional version of ourselves...an album that you can dig into and listen to again and again."

    Friday, November 21st
Orange Tulip Conspiracy (feat. Members of Estradasphere & Secret Chiefs 3)
    8:00 PM, $10
“Written and arranged by Estradasphere guitarist Jason Schimmel, Orange Tulip Conspiracy is an audio thrill ride into an expanding universe of drama, action, beauty and horror. Entirely instrumental, cinematic in scope, and backed by a monster cast of players (including Seattle's Bill Horist and Dave Abramson, Secret Chief 3's Trey Spruance, and the members of Estradasphere) Schimmel has composed and arranged 12 unique and highly-stylized tracks featuring countless areas of exploration with an array of sharp solos and clever tempo changes. It swings, it sways, it grooves and it rocks-these guys can play anything with frighteningly epic precision: eccentric lounge, Italian Giallo, futuristic metal, café' Romany, near eastern jazz.” — Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls, Sublime Frequencies, Abduction Records)

  • South by southwest: day three

    Mar 15 2008, 9h24 por gnatware

Woah, band overload. We're now into the meaty part of the festival--way too many amazing bands to see. I tried to catch as many as I could; the ones I hit up: High Places, Lykke Li, Evangelicals, Blood on the Wall, She & Him, Die! Die! Die!, Clipd Beaks, HEALTH, Cloud Cult, Why?, Cut Copy, Simian Mobile Disco (DJ set), Matt & Kim, Amanda Blank (with not-so-surprising guest Spank Rock), Diplo, and Clipse. Pardon the tedious list.

My favorite artist of the day kind of came out of nowhere: Die! Die! Die!. The new zealand trio showed up to the venue late; after a brief sound check, they were given only 15 minutes to play. But these kids made it count, channeling that intense kiwi energy for their allotted time: dramatic falls off the stage, lying on ground singing, getting in people's faces, just being confrontational in general. Chilly post-punk sounded great on a hot day.

In something of a DJ battle for the hipster set, atop a mammoth Austin garage, Diplo worked it better than Simian Mobile Disco. He also had more attractive t-shirts to throw. (Damn, I didn't catch one.)

  • my podcast; essay #9

    Jan 10 2008, 6h46 por avantgardening

hrm, this is turning out to be a monthly rather than bi-weekly affair, but i'm making up for it by posting longer running shows. that's my justification, anyway.

the focus is definitely not on noise this time out. there's a handful of experimental tracks, but they're just that: sonically interesting rather than straight up dissonant; however, there's plenty of loud moments to be had.

lots of punk / garage punk, older psychedelic garage rock, some folk, bluesy shit and noise rock, too.

Tan As Fuck - spice clause
    The Hospitals - i'm invisible
Mattress - i found my reason
    Clipd Beaks - meltr
    Verdure - graveyard porchlight
    Delphine - la fermeture eclair
    Mr. Airplane Man - fallen

Francoise Hardy - mon monde n'est pas vra
1/3 Octave Band - fading light from distant suns #4
    Muddy Waters - she's alright
The Blues Magoos - tobacco road

Busy Signals - love and dust
    DMZ - busy man
VKTMS - close but no cigar
MiLKY WAYS - i don't need you girl
