Circle was an avant garde jazz ensemble active in 1970 and 1971.[1] The group arose from pianist Chick Corea’s early 1970s trio with Dave Holland on bass and Barry Altschul on drums and percussion with the addition of Anthony Braxton in a leading role on several reed instruments. The group’s earliest (and only studio) recordings were made in 1970 for the Blue Note label but not released until 1975 under Corea’s name. A live double album appeared on the ECM label in 1972. These recordings document a period in which Corea’s work was steeped in the jazz avant garde, prior to his complete shift to the jazz fusion orientation. Corea, Holland and Altschul also recorded the album A.R.C. for ECM in 1971, but it wasn´t released under the band name Circle

re: loose, hazy, jammy stuff (that I tend to gravitate towards as it gets really hot in the summer), I'm revisiting and greatly enjoying Tyrant and the Sunburned Circle album (Circle + Sunburned Hand of the Man). As for favourites, I will tentatively name Sunrise the quintessential Circle album.

Telescope is the best one, long hazy jams is Circle's strongest point. Serpent is the best rock circus and Prospekt is the best old style Circle album. I generally like the live albums more, the studio albums feel more calculated which doesn't suit the band.

What are your favourite Circle albums and why? I've sort of come to these guys having exhausted the Pharaoh Overlord discography (I did see Circle a few years back, but I didn't really get into their records back then). I feel like I have a lot to discover... Of the 9 I've listened to so far Taantumus is probably my favourite. It's that hypnotic repetition...

Leviatan is the cutest album they ever put out. big Kuusumun Profeetta and Plain Ride vibe. heavy on the Westerlund influence i guess

I can't stop listening to Hollywood. It just might be my favorite record of 2014, even if it was released in 2008.

After mostly listening to their more recent material for some time, I'm returning to the mystical hypno-trips of Pori/Prospekt/Andexelt/Taantumus. Probably the most satisfying period in their catalogue.

"From 1991 through 2013, Falcon operated under the name of Circle. The need for the sudden name change arises from the Circle brand's becoming somewhat of a burden due to the expectations of Ektro Records and audiences. Making music was turning into work and an obligation. The Circle brand has been leased to a group of artists, who are currently working on the next Circle album. The full-lengths of both Falcon (ex-Circle) and Circle will be released later this autumn. The current plan is that the lease contract dissolves by the end of 2013 and the Circle brand will be returned to Falcon, who then may continue under the name Circle (ex-Falcon). All Circle concerts booked for 2013 will be performed by Circle's long standing line-up: Mika Rättö, Janne Westerlund, Jussi Lehtisalo, Tomi Leppänen, Pekka Jääskeläinen, Julius Jääskeläinen, Tuomas Laurila." Jussi Lehtisalo / Falcon (ex-Circle)
