  • Road Trip Playlist, pt. 1

    Mar 10 2009, 4h46 por originalfangsta

I went on not one, but two separate road trips Friday-Sunday, and I found myself listening to music to get me in the mood to love the open road.

Yellowcard is a great band for good road trip tunes. TocarRough Draft is a great one. I guess the acoustic guitar and the mellow-but-upbeat vibe of the song is what makes it so good, but it's a great song overall. TocarAfraid, How I Go, and Space Travel are also good ones.

Another band I love to listen to on the road is This Providence. They're one of my favorites regardless, but The Road To Jericho Is Lined With Starving People is perfect for long drives. Could be the Beatles vibe it gives off.

Cinematic Sunrise is Craig Owens' happier side, which much to my surprise, is actually bright. Perfect for long drives! I really love Ethan's Song and TocarUmbrellas and Elephants...gotta love that girlyman voice.

I found a few new bands here recently through this site, hunting through the Every Avenue simliar artists page, and I've fallen in love with Vega Under Fire, Forgive Durden, I Am the Avalanche, Bayside (all over again....it's been years!),Friday Night Boys, The Morning Light, Thee Armada, Jamestown Story, Portugal. The Man, and Driver Side Impact, all of which make great additions to any playlist.

My favorite song right now, at this very minute, is Devotion and Desire by Bayside...it's so good. All the wasted yeeears!

  • How Varied Is My Taste In Music?

    Jan 4 2009, 10h04 por polkageeks

This is what happens when one (well, me) has nothing better to do.
I don't know if I can trust this, but yes, I thought it was sort of fun. Got it from yuki_no_hime. Here's it:

'First, make a list of your overall top-20 artists. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, add up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.'

  • Awards for Best/Worst Concerts I've Seen

    Dez 28 2008, 2h56 por whyworry

    ..Part Two.

I did one of these a year and a half ago, but it definitely needs an update. I think the winners for each category have changed in one way or another.. either because I hadn't seen the artist before or just because I'm fickle like that. Plus there's a few new categories.

The awards come after my total list of who I have seen in concert:

The number of times I’ve seen each artist is in the parentheses, unless it’s only been once, in which case there will be no number.

  • KFLA Update 12/16/08 - Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Mike Park, VooDoo Glow…

    Dez 16 2008, 23h38 por TheKnitLA

    Friday, January 9th
Knoup Presents, Visa, Lantz Lazwell, honeysmash
    8:00 PM, $15
Visa is old-soul, take-you-to-another-place music at its finest. What began as a side project has grown into an eight-member, world music phenomena. It’s poignantly emotive, hard-charging, no-boundary folk that’ll lift you out of your seat whether you’re a hard-to-please grandparent or a punk-rocking prep. Every piece – percussion, duduk, three guitars, keys, drums, bass and voice – adds to the overall picture.

    Saturday, January 10th
80’s Tribute Night starring The Cured (Cure Tribute), Blasphemous Rumours (Depeche Mode Tribute), Rio (Duran Duran Tribute)
8:00 PM, $12 advance, $15 day of show
A KROQ ‘80s weekend rears its ugly head and explodes into real life, sort of like that big lizard in Cloverfield. Mouse your hair up into some unsymmetrical shape, put on your goth-pop lipstick, and head on down.

    Friday, January 23rd
The Lives of Famous Men, Anarbor, Go Crash Audio
    7:30 PM, $10

    Thursday, January 29th
The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band
    8:00 PM, $10
“The band’s new full-length The Whole Fam Damnily was recorded at a church in Bloomington, Indiana, just down the road from where the band lives. “From the rowdy and rancorous opener ‘Can’t Pay the Bill’ to the melodic, slide-guitar-driven barnburner ‘Wal-Mart Killed the Country Store’ and heartfelt finger-style ballad ‘What’s Mine Is Yours,’ the album is a timeless collection of songs that defies age and era—and pays homage to the band’s influences without imitating them.

“We come from the same tradition that Charley Patton and Furry Lewis came from; they just took off with their instruments and went out into the world to see what would stick,” Peyton elaborates. “They sang about what they were going through in their time and we’re doing the same thing in ours.”

    Sunday, February 1st

Viernes 13 has shared the stage with many well-known bands such as the Slackers, Royal Crown Revue, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Manic Hispanic, Inspector and Tijuana No. Viernes 13 is currently working on their first full-length album, which will include a new rocksteady sound, as well as the classic Viernes 13 style their fans love.

    Friday, February 6th
Mike Park, Jesse Michaels, Kevin Seconds, Andrew Jackson Jihad
    7:30 PM, $10
In 1996, Mike Park started Asian Man Records. Modeling it after the successful Dischord Records of Washington, D.C., Park hoped he could create an equal counterpart on the West Coast that stayed true to the spirit of punk ideas. Not motivated by capitalism, but by change and action through the power of music, Park proudly points out that he still runs his label from his parent's garage, despite having sold over 1,000,000 albums. Enlisting the help of just two employees (one of whom is his mother), one phone line, a fax line, two computers, and an undersized garage, the label continues to be one of the heavyweights in the indie music community. In November of 2003, Park released his first solo record, For the Love of Music. 2004 saw Park on the road for the first time since 1996, touring with artists such as Cursive, Saul Williams, Alkaline Trio and Anti-Flag. North Hangook Falling was released in 2005, offering up lyrics about politics, race, war and his everyday experiences.

The Ska is Dead IV Tour: Back From the Grave
Ska is Dead IV Lineup and Routing Announced
Ska is Dead is back from the grave and headed out west. Since 2004, The Ska is Dead Tour has been North America's premier ska festival / tour proving that ska is very much alive. Previous incarnations of the tour have crossed North America three times, and crossed the Atlantic once to tour the U.K. Ska is Dead I, II, and III have featured the biggest names in the genre, selling thousands of tickets in some of North America's best venues. The upcoming tour is no exception and is quickly shaping up to be the best one yet. Ska is Dead IV includes North America’s longest running ska band the Toasters, as well as skacore legends Voodoo Glow Skulls on all dates.

    Tuesday, February 10th
Never Better Tour starring P.O.S. with special Doomtreeguests Sims, Mictlan & Lazerbreak, hand over fist
8:30 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
P.O.S. returns with Never Better, his follow-up to 2006's critically acclaimed Audition. On it, he raps at full-clip to ride-rolling drums and revving distortion. There’s an urgency that he keeps in careful check, and then unleashes for spring-loaded verses that represent his best work. P.O.S. produced more than half the beats on Never Better, which bears his unmistakable signature. The album enters the room like bombshell with a black eye—badass, noisy and impossible to ignore.

    Tuesday, February 17th
Joey Cape of Lagwagon, Chris Schifflet of Foo Fighters, Jon Snodgrass of Drag The River, Marko 72 of Sugarcult
7:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
Known for his work with popular punkers Lag Wagon, Afterburner, Bad Astronaut, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Joey Cape is releasing his first solo acoustic collection on Suburban Home Records, entitled Bridge. Opening with the song “The Ramones are Dead,” Bridge puts Cape in the company of Against Me’s Tom Gable, Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan, Avail's Tim Barry, Kevin Seconds of Seven Seconds, and other punk rockers who have chosen to strip away the drum sets and 100-watt half stacks to more clearly present their lyrics and melodies. Is this the new folk scene?

    Friday, March 6th
    Volto
    8:00 PM, $20
An all-star musical force, Volto have become regulars at the Knitting Factory, where their brand of high-tech good times is a mix of robust fusion, dirty blues, classic rock, and impossible chops. The band is comprised of Danny Carey, well-loved as the drummer from Tool; Kirk Covington, keyboardist and vocalist from Tribal Tech; Don Henley bassist Lance Morrison; and Pigmy Love Circus guitarist John Zeigler. The band wails on some self-penned songs, but really kick into high gear with covers from the likes of Jeff Beck and Billy Cobham.

    Thursday, March 26th
Craig Owens (of Chiodos/Cinematic Sunrise), Ace Enders & a Million Different People, The Gay Blades, VersaEmerge
6:00 PM, $12.50 advance, $15 day of show
Owens is primarily known as the front man for Chiodos, a difficult-to-classify modern rock band, who after years of hard work, DIY-releases and tireless touring, signed to Equal Vision in 2004. Owens also works with a rotating cast of musicians known as the Sound of Animals Fighting, while also maintaining his status in Chiodos. His solo work, like everything he is involved in, is unpredictable and could go in any number of directions.

    Saturday, April 4th
Left Alone, Viernes 13, Black Rose Phantoms, Gamblers Mark
    7:30 PM, $12
One of the most hard-working independent bands in the underground scene today, Left Alone has truly made their mark! Started back in 1996 by Elvis Cortez (guitar/vocals) it has been nonstop from the first punk rock keg party to the recent Vans Warped Tour. Drawing influences from bands such as the Clash, Rancid, Swingin’ Utters, Operation Ivy and Elvis Costello, Left Alone manage to bring a freshness to the roots they love. From the streets of Wilmington, CA comes this four-piece that slowly moved from the backyards to selling out club shows just by word of mouth. With a huge D.I.Y ethic, Elvis started Smelvis Records to release his records. Left Alone book their own tours, make their own merchandise and even tune their own guitars.
