  • Discoveries 2009

    Jul 24 2009, 11h26 por postrational

For your consideration, a list of albums I discovered this year, so far...

    Funk
It seems 2009 is all about the funk for me.

George Duke - Dukey Treats (2008)
The legendary jazzman George Duke plays some great funky fusion on his latest album. With elements of R&B and Soul, this Jazz-Funk album should appeal to many audiences.

Maceo Parker - Funkoverload (1998) and Dial: Maceo (2000)
I rediscovered Maceo Parker this year. These two albums coincide with the period when Maceo collaborated with Prince.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band - The Phenomenal Handclap Band (2009)
Self-titled debut by this supergroup which includes Jon Spencer among many others.

Łąki Łan - Łąki Łan (2005) and Łąki Łanda (2009)
Two albums from the Polish alt-folk funky freaks Łąki Łan. Both albums are really worth listening to.

The Brand New Heavies - All About the Funk (2004)
A good attempt by The Brand New Heavies. Although somewhat uneven, there are a few great song.

    Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement (2009)
Is it 2009 or 1969? You may have trouble guessing if you listen to this brand new album from a brand new act: Mayer Hawthorne. Sounds a little bit too even for soul, but his songs have plenty of heart. Easy, laid back compositions, heart-wrenching lyrics and a great sense of humor.

    Not Funk, but also great
Chuck Mangione - Children Of Sanchez (1978)
This fusion of jazz and progressive rock is legendary among some. With a selection of Spanish and Latin-flavored instrumentals, a concept-album of sorts. Soft, quiet, beautiful, yet with enough kick to be exciting.

David Peña Dorantes - Orobroy (1998)
Instrumental piano album by a Spanish Możdżer. Very nice, contemplative music, which mixes classical piano with Spanish folk inspirations.

    She & Him - Volume 1 (2008)
A stunning album by the actress Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward. They play a light pop stylized to sound like it came from the '60s or even '50s with elements of alternative country. Zooey's voice is clear and confident, while remaining soothing and beautiful. The arrangements by M. Ward complete the picture. Through and through, a great album.

Just Jack - All Night Cinema (2009)
The third installment from Just Jack. Great easy-listening pop with elements of hip-hop, electronica and dance beats. The song The Day I Died is a must!

    Sofa - DoReMiFaSoFa (2009)
This playful tribute to the roots of hip-hop could have arisen anywhere in the world, but it happened in Poland. The six-piece and guests show off rapping skills on par with any white men, while at the same time mixing in a more serious attitude and topics then most.

NATU + Envee - Maupka Comes Home (2008)
The singer is a young girl named Natalia Przybysz (Natu), who mixes R'n'B with hints of jazz and pop with the ease of a much more experienced artist. The album was produced by Envee, who left no thread untouched, making this a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

  • It does feel good

    Mar 8 2008, 7h43 por madth3

Feels So Good was the first jazz record I heard back in the 80's when I was a kid and discovered my aunts old LP's.

Since then, I've always had a special place in my heart for this album and I feel that Chuck Mangione and his band captured a special 70's feeling in it.

TocarFeels So Good has appeared in many places and commercials over the years (Although most of the times in a shortened version, stripping away the guitar beginning).

The gems here are the rest of the tracks, I particualrly enjoy Hide & Seek and TocarThe XIth Commandment (with its "Sergio Leone" beginning).

  • Odds and sods

    Jan 22 2008, 17h40 por soundtrekkie

I am quite literally bouncing and clapping on the inside (as much as possible--sometimes it leaks out!) about the shows I will be seeing next week.

    Howard Jones

    Tim Finn

The only way that this week could be more complete is if Nik Kershaw and Tony Banks decided to come to Portland and play shows on the dates in between. *sigh* A girl can dream.

I've picked up my music buying habit and managed to get a ton of Howard Jones and Split Enz on vinyl in preparation. How these albums made it to my little corner, I don't know. But I did notice something odd the other day: the Split Enz US fan club circa 1970 was in Eugene, Oregon. What are the odds of that? The Earl and I plan to send something to the P.O. Box and see if it's still in business.

    Other purchases include:

    - Radiohead's In Rainbows, which I am thoroughly enjoying now that it sounds better.
    - Brad Mehldau's Largo, which I didn't know about and picked up based on Jon Brion's contributions.
    - A reordered copy of Meaningless that I have missed so badly.
    - The first Weepies album, Happiness should be gracing my mailbox soon. Can't wait for the next one!
    - ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition. I've always had a weakness for this Mussorgsky piece so I grabbed it. The first ELP album I can stand!
    - Teddy Thompson's Separate Ways, another "couldn't find" for a while. Wish he didn't have his dad playing guitar on a few tracks -- it's distracting for us RT fans.
    - The Devil Makes Three debut. I missed them on my birthday but was told it was a great show. :(

In other news, the music appreciation bug has spread to my little town. I hosted four of us (though there were quite a few interested) for the first meeting and we had such diverse childhood songs as The Beatles' Hey Bulldog, It's a Hard-Knock Life from Annie, Chuck Mangione's TocarFeels So Good, and Willie Nelson on TocarCity Of New Orleans. Next week: break-up songs.

Also....if anyone hasn't heard the Legion of Rock Stars or The Most Wanted/Unwanted Music, get thee hence!

  • My Eclectic Score as of May 8, 2007

    Mai 8 2007, 22h15 por 0xym0r0n

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at Anthony's Eclectic Generator

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one

    Jan 23 2007, 22h32 por toasterhead2k

A Case Study of a jazz funk Classic

Abstract: It is our contention that the 1977 hit "Feels So Good" by flugelhornist Chuck Mangione is, at any given time, being played on a broadcast radio station, satellite radio station, or subscription music service somewhere in the world. We intend to prove this through a thorough and comprehensive search of Sigma encoding records from all "lite jazz" or "adult contemporary" stations in the continental United States and/or the Freak States (Alaska, Hawaii, Indiana), plus playlist records from applicable satellite networks and Muzak-type services, for the arbitrarily selected hour of 6:00:00-6:59:59 Eastern Standard Time on November 18, 2006.

For this purpose we are requesting a research grant of no less than $1,750,000 payable in unmarked non-consecutive currency to an address which will be disclosed shortly. Attempts to contact our research team directly will result in unspeakable consequences. This is a publish-or-perish situation and as you can see our project is quite serious.

You look forward to hearing from us again soon.

    smooth jazz
    在熟悉的旋律裡找到共鳴 在創新的手法中發現原創

    TocarCantaloop

    80年代中期,美國當代的爵士樂手如 Chuck Mangione、George Benson 和 Herb Alpert 等,延續了傳統爵士的經典,且適時地加入當時流行的元素,創造出許多膾炙人口的經典名曲,如 Feels So Good、This Masquerade、Rise,更常名列 BILLBOARD 流行榜首,這類型音樂不但傳承了傳統爵士的樂器技巧並兼顧了旋律的好聽性,巧妙運用電子樂器並融合世界音樂的元素。 ...more in source:www.mesamusic.com.tw

  • Cosmic Sign? Or Serendipity?

    Jan 2 2007, 16h07 por beelzbubba

As the clock and calendar heralded the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, the song playing on my iTunes random jukebox was Tomorrow. I had meant to make note of it then, but the revelry here--subdued as it was--prevented me from making any mental notes on anything.

The track is from 1972's Mannekind. one of a string where Manne tried to be "with it." Fans way into the West Coast Cool Jazz sometime refer to this as Manne's "free jazz" period, but of course it is nothing of the sort. Scott Yanow (AMG) calls 69-74 Manne's "avant-gard" era. Considering what was going on in the jazz avant garde at that same time, that is a particularly galling insult both to Manne and to the avant-garde.

Instead, it was a hybrid jazz fusion date, with Mike Wofford on e-piano, and his then-current core of Gary Barone on trumpet, John Gross on Tenor and John Morrell on electric guitar.

I have no idea how it stands in the overall Manne catalog, since West Coast Cool was never one of my keen interests, but this album can take its place with any number of (big)Jazz (small)fusion dates of the era: the Dreams band that introduced the young Randy Brecker and Michael Brecker or Larry Coryell's 11th House band and is much more listenable today than Larry Young's Fuel. Certainly more adventurous than any of the Chuck Mangione/Niewood albums of the day.

The young sidemen here are challenged by Manne's impeccable stick-handling, but all rise to the prodding of the master.

This is another one of the lp's I've dug out of the crates over break and burned to digital. So nice to hear an old friend.

    Happy New Year, all!
