  • How Varied Is Your Music Taste?

    Nov 10 2009, 11h49 por hannnahi

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • WFMU Record Fair: Wait, how much did I just spend?

    Out 25 2009, 21h30 por rhandofnixon

I was already nearly broke when I went in to this thing, but some expenses are necessary. It'll take me weeks, I'm sure, to get through all this stuff I found:

    - The original vinyl pressing of Glenn Branca's The Ascension (!). This now officially takes over as the best thing in my collection, I think.

    - The Clash's first album, UK version, in mint condition

    - The original pressing of the first New York Dolls album

    - The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl

    - The Nov. 22/Meet the Creeper 7" single by Destroy All Monsters

    - A couple old EPs by Archers of Loaf: The Loaf's Revenge, and the spectacular "South Carolina"

    - A surprisingly good EP by Refrigerator that is either called "Songs with a Story" or "Music for Bugs", I'm not sure

    - Other singles & EPs: Rites of Spring, Fever Ray, Yoko Ono, 3 by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Elvis Costello and a bunch more

    - LPs of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, Atomizer, Labour Of Lust (which I got a pretty sidelong glance from this guy for buying), The Dock of the Bay, Electric Ladyland

    - A shitload of CDs

    Yikes.

    01. How did you get into #31?

Chuck Berry - I've been hearing him on oldies radio since before I could talk.

    02. What was the first song you ever heard by #22?

that's weird, the person I stole this from had Elliott Smith at number 22 also.
the first one I remember hearing was Angeles, but I don't think that's right. I had listened to him before but Angeles was the song that made me love him.

    03. What's your favorite lyric by #41 ?
hmmm...I think a lot of them are really good although sometimes a little cheesy.
I've got torn up knees and calloused fingertips
broken vocal chords and busted lips
    is a good one though.
    Lucero - All Sewn Up

    04. What is your favorite album by #49 ?

Make Yourself although I haven't listened to it in ages.

    05. How many albums by #13 do you own?

Only three, Green River, and Chronicle Vols. 1 and 2. in my opinion, they didn't have that many good ones. when they were good they were awesome but when they weren't they were terrible.

    06. What is your favorite song by #50 ?

I don't know I don't listen to them very much anymore. probably Bastard's Way, for nostalgia's sake.

    07. Is there a song by #4 that makes you sad?

not really. I dunno, maybe Grandma Song. I'm even sure if it's supposed to be sad, but it kind of feels that way.

    08. What is your least favorite song by #15 ?

I don't know. I think a lot of Iron & Wine's songs don't really sound like much, I think at a certain point you can have music that's TOO soft. some of the songs feel like they don't have any substance to them sometimes. but it does make for music that's really easy to go to sleep to.

    09. What is your favorite song by #5

dude too many. in my opinion every single track from From Here To Infirmary, Goddamnit, and Good Mourning are fucking gold.

    10. Is there a song by #6 that makes you happy?

TocarCountry Roads probably the most, but John Denver is happy music in general.

    11. What is your favorite album by #40 ?

    Songs From Under The Sink.

    12. What is your favorite song by #10 ?

No Children, hands down. but TocarGoing to Georgia also has a very special place in my heart.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving #33 ?

I grew up listening to The Beach Boys, so there's a lot of nostalgia attached to them. But my ex boyfriend opened my eyes to the brilliance of Pet Sounds, and that's also another really good memory. getting ridiculously baked and lying there listening to it over and over again, only moving to get up and flip the record.

    14. What is your favourite song by #37 ?

I don't know probably TocarFree Pizza For Life, but I have a love/hate relationship with Ghost Mice. I can't help but love it sometimes but if they come up on shuffle when I'm not in the mood, I will scrunch up my face and change it as soon as possible because their voices are so incredibly grating sometimes.

    15. Is there a song by #19 that makes you happy?

Weezer is just happy music in general man. but particularly anything off the Green Album or the Blue Album. even the ones that are supposed to be angsty, it's like the happiest music on the planet.

    16. How many times have you seen #24 live?

none. I almost saw AC/DC last year, but ended up backing out on spending $90 for one concert.

    17. What is the first song you heard by #23 ?

Muse. It had to have been something from Origin Of Symmetry.

    18. What is your favorite album by #11 ?

    Requiem, no contest.

    19. Who is your favorite member of #1 ?

Dude I had such a crush on Tom Gabel the entire time I was in high school, until I saw them live and I seriously think if Andrew Seward had asked me to sacrifice my virginity to him on stage that night in front of everyone, I probably would have done it, no questions asked.

    20. How many times have you seen #14 live?

High on Fire, just once, but it may be twice very soon.

    21. What is a good memory you have involving #45 ?

Neutral Milk Hotel...I can't really think of anything.

    22. What is your favorite song by #16 ?

Either Grenades or Healer...or really anything from Meanderthal.

    23. What is the first song you heard by #47 ?

I think it was Dick in Dixie, but if not that then definitely something off Straight to Hell.

    24. What is your favorite album by #3 ?

I don't know, I don't think it matters much for an all covers band, but probably Love Their Country.

    25. What is your favourite song by #18 ?

    Baroness? probably Coeur.

    26. What is the first song you heard by #38 ?

I have no idea. I'm sure I was totally stoned at the time. (Melvins)

    27. What is your favourite lyric that #21 has sung?

I don't know...Green Day? some of them are pretty insightful I guess. (?)

    28. What is your favourite song by #2 ?

god picking favorites is so hard. some of The Avett Brothers' songs seriously bring me close to tears. they make some damn beautiful music. but just for the sake of picking one I'll go with The Ballad Of Love And Hate

    29. What is the first song you heard by #32 ?

I'm sure it was Blitzkreig Bop.

    30. What is your favorite song by #8 ?

Favorite song by The Beatles? I'm going to take that as a rhetorical question.

    31. How many times have you seen #17 live?

I've only seen Propagandhi once, a loooong time ago.

    32. Is there a song by #44 that makes you happy?

Teardrops on Table 39. don't ask why, I have no idea.

    33. What is your favorite album by #12 ?

Loretta Lynn? I don't know, probably Coal Miner's Daughter, to be completely honest.

    34. What is the worst song by #29 ?

The Ataris have quite a few terrible songs. I can't pick just one. I also can't believe these guys are my #29? I think this must be due to shuffle because the last time I remember consciously choosing to listen to them was like 4 or 5 years ago.

    35. What was the first song you heard by #34 ?

    Ten Things. Oh, Paul Baribeau.

    36. What is your favorite album by #42 ?

The Attic Tapes, and That Much Further West, but for two completely different reasons and I listen to them when I'm in completely different moods.

    37. How many times have you seen #39 live?

I wish I could see Merle Haggard.

    38. What is your favorite album by #36 ?

Probably Smile. Boris, not Brian Wilson

    39. What is the first song you heard by #28 ?

TocarWhiskey is my Kind of Lullaby. and it remains my favorite.

    40. What is your favourite album by #7?

Bridge Over Troubled Water, without question.

    god I'm so bored.

    The King of Rock'n Roll

Let's get this straight. Elvis Presley was a singer; he never wrote any songs. That said, he did have a lovely baritone: TocarHeartbreak Hotel.

I think that it is true that he just happened to be white singing black music in a racist society (and 1950s America was more racist than today's USA). We know the roots are coming from rhythm and blues eg Little Richard and Chuck Berry. But you cannot deny performances like TocarReturn To Sender or TocarHound Dog

And while he may have been oblivivious to the sexual ambiguity of TocarJailhouse Rock he certainly knew the meaning of TocarIn The Ghetto.

I should also say that I don't think that there is evidence that he was personally racist. So I don't entirely agree with the brilliant TocarFight The Power.

  • Cadillac Records

    Set 6 2009, 20h36 por hdsander

My Anthology of Chess Records' music is still one of my preferred albums (if a 13 CD boxset can be called an 'album'). I lately watched the movie Cadillac Records. It's Chess Records' story featuring great music of Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, the great songwriter Willie Dixon ("The blues is the roots; everything else is the fruits." - Willie Dixon) and the lovely Beyoncé as Etta James. Well, none of the actors might get an Oscar for that but it's just fun to get the story told and to listen to the awesome music.

I compiled a playlist of the genuine versions of the songs featured on the soundtrack:

    1. TocarI'm A Man - Bo Diddley
    2. TocarCountry Blues - Muddy Waters
    3. TocarI Can't Be Satisfied - Muddy Waters
    4. TocarForty Days And Forty Nights - Muddy Waters
    5. TocarJuke - Little Walter & His Nightcats
    6. Tocar(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man - Muddy Waters
    7. TocarMy Babe - Little Walter
    8. TocarSmokestack Lightnin' - Howlin' Wolf
    9. TocarMaybellene - Chuck Berry
    10. TocarNadine - Chuck Berry
    11. TocarNo Particular Place To Go - Chuck Berry
    12. TocarPromised Land - Chuck Berry

    15. TocarTrust In Me - Etta James

    17. TocarI'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James
    18. TocarLast Night - Little Walter
