Chthonic (sometimes typeset ChthoniC) is a Taiwanese symphonic black metal band, formed in 1995 in Taipei. The group incorporates influences from traditional Taiwanese music including instruments such as the erhu (which is called a hena in their native Taiwanese).
Since their formation, Chthonic released four studio albums, starting in 1999 with the debut Where the Ancestors’ Souls Gathered, followed by 2000’s 9th Empyrean, in 2002 Relentless Recurrence, and 2006’s Seediq Bale.
The band’s stated goal is to use their music to bring ancient history and mythology into the modern era, especially the tragic history and unique myths of Taiwan (for example, those of the Seediq people). The name “Chthonic” is a Greek word which refers to the earth and can have implications of the underworld.
In 2003, they won the Best Band Award at the Taiwan Golden Melodies Award Ceremony[2]. The band is also banned in parts of China for their political views.
The lead vocalist, Freddy Lim, is notably active in the political scene and supports Taiwan independence.
In 2007 he and other artists organized an international music festival to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 228 Incident, entitled “Spirit of Taiwan: With justice we cure this nation”.[3]
On March 30, 2007, it was confirmed that Chthonic were to be part of the 2007 Ozzfest tour as a rotating second stage act.[4] While taking part in Ozzfest, they also toured as a support act for Nile in July and August and as a headliner in September.[5]

Yeah, it's not really a sad sign at all. After all they said that Taiwanese isn't that well spoken in Taiwan, as Chinese was forced upon them - and English is way more spoken in Japan than Taiwanese. It's not Americanisation - seeing as English is the second most spoken language in the world...and that's ANGLICISATION as it's the English that spread their language via the British Empire...not the Americans.

hehe, I good, for once positive comparison to C.O.F. I see what you mean darkman - no they seem to rely almost solely on the hena for their oriental sound, which is a bit lazy I suppose. I still love the new album, but what I have heard from 9th empyrean and relentless recurrence sounds unique and is some of the most atmospheric black metal I've heard

The new album is very good, but I do not like the direction they are heading. Where is the older, more oriental sound that is basically unexplored by symphonic BM? Anyways, I enjoy the older albums the most, mostly 9th Empyrean and Relentless Recurrence as ell as the recordings on Pandemonium.

Guy does specifically refer to males, as it derives from Guy Fawkes, originally meaning a man of odd appearance (this is according to wikipedia). Who on earth would call a woman a guy? that's just stupid. But Americans tend to misunderstand the words of their own language, such as random and like.
